Boy Scout Troop One marks 100 years

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – One of the oldest Boy Scout troops in the country is celebrating a century of community service and Scouting this weekend in St. Charles.

Founded in 1913, the St. Charles-based Boy Scout Troop One still is thriving 100 years later, said Chris Jensen, assistant scoutmaster for Troop One. He said the landmark anniversary feels surreal.

“Not too many organizations can say they’ve been around that long,” he said.

“It’s quite a legacy.”

The troop is inviting the public and former and current members to celebrate from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Hickory Knolls Discovery Center, 3795 Campton Hills Road, St. Charles. They’re encouraging former members to bring troop memorabilia, and will be sharing historic photos from the troop’s early days.

The troop was founded by Karl Apslund three years after Boy Scouts of America was chartered in 1910.

Jensen said about seven or eight years ago, the troop’s membership dipped to only a

handful of Scouts. That period was followed by a big push to replenish membership so the troop wouldn’t “fade away,” Jensen said. He said the push resulted in a “huge infusion” of Scouts, many of whom later became active leaders. Today, Troop One has more than 60 members.

The troop’s longevity is attributed partially to luck, Jensen said, but also to the commitment of the Scouts. He said the troop is led mainly by the Scouts with the help of the leaders; not the other way

around. That kind of commitment has given the Scouts a feeling of ownership, and many continue to serve the troop as leaders.

“When you turn 18, you’re either done with Scouting or you become an adult leader,” he said. “The number of kids that have come back to the troop to be adult leaders as young men, not necessarily having kids [in Scouts], I think is representative of a strong commitment, and liking the troop a lot and their experience.”

H.C. Storm parents continue to voice concerns

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – H.C. Storm Elementary School parents continue to raise concerns about changes proposed for the school, including using the art and music rooms as regular classroom space.

The school is at 305 N. Van Nortwick Ave., Batavia.

H.C. Storm Principal Timothy McDermott recently told parents that increased enrollment has led to space constraints, and the art and music rooms will be used as regular classroom space.

Art and music teachers will visit classrooms to provide instruction.

“I and several other parents wonder what happened to result in this overcrowding

and why hasn’t it occurred at any other school,” H.C. Storm parent Ellen Knautz said in addressing Batavia School Board members on Tuesday.

Other H.C. Storm parents voiced their concerns.

Knautz recently started a petition urging that Batavia School District 101 reconsider the changes.

As of Wednesday afternoon, 100 people have signed the petition at www.thepetitionsite.com.

Knautz has a child who will be in third grade at the school.

“We parents have not been assured that these changes at H.C. Storm will be limited to one year,” she told board members.

She is concerned the school’s art and music pro-

gram will suffer because it will lose its specialized classrooms starting this fall.

Knautz noted that the other elementary schools in the district will have dedicated rooms for art and music.

“The art and music teachers at H.C. Storm cannot teach as effectively in student classrooms compared to rooms customized for their subject,” Knautz stated in her petition.

Knautz said any learning materials that are used will have to be portable.

McDermott also told parents of a summer construction project that will involve enclosing two pods at the school.

He said the newly configured spaces will be used by staff to provide interventions and enrichment for students.

Newly appointed Batavia School Board member Melanie Impastato said she was sympathetic to their concerns.

She has been named as a liaison to H.C. Storm School.

“I agree that the arts are very important,” Impastato told the parents. “You have a sympathetic ear.”

Lauzen hires two for outreach program

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Two people hired by Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen have been quietly working to implement Lauzen’s envisioned county community outreach program, even as Lauzen continues to heap praise on a man who could be the subject of Lauzen’s next appointment at county Animal Control.

Cheryl Maraffio of Aurora and Nicholas Scanlan of Sugar Grove were hired on a contract basis last month to serve as coordinators of the Kane County Connected program, according to county records.

County records indicate the county received 32 applications for the position.

The Kane County Connected program is designed to center on social media, such as Facebook, to “connect Kane County’s different constituencies,” Lauzen has said.

Maraffio and Scanlan did not reply to a message left at the Kane County Connected office Wednesday afternoon.

Published information indicate that Maraffio has served on the Chris Lauzen b o a r d o f t h e Fox Valley United Way and as campaign coordinator for Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner. She also served as CEO of the Barrio Foundation and various roles centered on violence prevention at the city of Aurora.

No such information was available for Scanlan.

Lauzen said he did not know either of them before interviewing them.

The two were hired under a six-month temporary contract.

However, Lauzen has asked the County Board to fund the positions next year using money from the Grand Victoria Casino.

Lauzen also is expected to hire a new animal control administrator later this year. Lauzen said he remains “grateful” for the performance to date of Rob Sauceda as billing manager.

Lauzen said he does not know whether the county has received applications from anyone for the administrator position yet.

Sauceda’s hire was controversial, as board members questioning Sauceda’s political ties to Lauzen, balked at Lauzen’s initial attempt to install Sauceda as animal control administrator.

Lauzen then opted to name Sauceda billing manager.

again pointed to Sauceda’s apparent success in increasing revenue to Animal Control, noting that the department has brought in $200,000 more year-to-date than in 2012.

Board member Mark Davoust, R-St. Charles, has been vocal in opposition to Sauceda’s employment, saying he believed the hiring violated Lauzen’s campaign pledge to “drain the swamp of cronyism.”

Davoust conceded that Sauceda has done well as bill-

ing manager, but continued to question whether Sauceda should serve as animal control administrator.

“I’ve never been an opponent of success at animal control,” Davoust said. “All I ask is that this position be posted and be fairly offered to all interested people.”

Lauzen, however, lashed out at Davoust, saying Davoust “should be sensitive to his living in a glass house” when criticizing Sauceda’s hire.

“He voted for all the failures that came before and now opposes our success,” Lauzen said. “It’s unnecessary.”

ROBERT E. LOVELLETTE JR. Born: April 30, 1947; in Chicago Died: July 23, 2013 NORTH AURORA – Robert E. Lovellette Jr., of North Aurora, lost his courageous battle with lymphoma Tuesday, July 23, 2013.

Bob was born April 30, 1947, in Chicago, the son of Robert and Doris Lovellette.

He is survived by his mother, Doris Lutz; and stepdad, Herb Lutz; three younger brothers, Daniel (Jane) Lovellette of North Aurora, Greg (Anne) Lovellette of Missoula, Mont., and Vance Lovellette of Melrose Park; and his niece, Andrea (David) Forsell and their children, Sarah and Cooper, all of St. Charles.

Bob was preceded in death by his father, Robert E. Lovellette; and his niece, Sara Lovellette.

Bob was raised in Chicago and then Western Springs before moving to North Aurora in 1961. He graduated from West Aurora High School in 1965. He then joined the Navy and was stationed in Hawaii and the Philippines working with the crash crew. After his discharge from the Navy, Bob worked for Campana in Batavia, and then worked for Aurora Meat Packing Company in North Aurora. For the last 16 years, Bob worked as a school bus driver for Laidlaw, then First

Student and finally Illinois Central, where he serviced Batavia and West Chicago public schools.

Bob was admitted to Hines Hospital in Maywood in midJune. The doctors at Hines were amazed at his attitude upon hearing the diagnosis. Bob said, “You play with the hand God dealt you.” He played with courage, strength, and most of all, humor.

All who cared for him throughout the month commented on his pleasantness and good nature.

He would ask us, “What’s the skinny?” wanting to know all that was going on with his care. Well, Bob, the skinny is that there is no more dealing with tight blood pressure cuffs, no more prods, pokes or sticks for blood.

The skinny is that you can now rest peacefully.

A memorial service will be at noon Saturday, July 27, at Moss Family Funeral Home, 209 S. Batavia Ave. (Route 31), Batavia, where visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the service. Interment will be private.

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. – Dennis A. Miller, 79, of Noblesville, Ind., and formerly of Yorkville and Geneva, passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at Maple Park Village Nursing Home in Westfield, Ind. He was born Feb. 9, 1934, in Aurora, the son of G. Clare and Maude A. (Scott) Miller.

Dennis was united in marriage Dec. 16, 1968, in Geneva, to the former Marilyn Simpson, and they spent the next 44 happy years of their lives together. He served his country proudly with the United States Navy. Mr. Miller was a graduate of Florida Southern College and was then employed for 45 years as an insurance agent

with Country Companies.

He was a member of the VFW Post #6246 in Noblesville, Ind. Dennis loved the Chicago Cubs and when he lived in Illinois, he frequently attended games at Wrigley Field. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle who will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Miller of Noblesville, Ind.; his children, Renee (Paul) Cacchillo of Carmel, Ind., and Jason (Jessie Barwa) Miller of Geneva; his grandchildren, Evelyn, Jennifer and David Cacchillo, and Tyler and Ryan Miller; his brother, Loren (Rhonda) Miller of Yorkville; his sisters, Rebecca Olson of Ottawa, Jane (Dale) Henrickson of Yorkville and JoAnne (Neil) Witt of Custer, S.D.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Age and family matters Boomers often face the responsibility of caring for parents, children

and STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com Bob Brown and his wife told their children they could live with them for a year after graduating from college – but they really wanted them moved out in six months and would charge them rent.

“They moved pretty fast,” the St. Charles resident said of his children, now 33, 31 and 29.

But for six months out of the year, Brown and his wife open their home to his 97-year-old father-in-law, who is mobile and has all of his faculties. He spends the winters in Austin, Texas, with his other married daughter.

“He doesn’t wear out his welcome,” Brown said.

At 66, Brown is part of the baby boomer generation, those born between 1946 and 1964.

As baby boomers cross the threshold into retirement age – 10,000 boomers a day turn 65 in the United States – many are paying more attention to family and the need to care for aging parents while helping adult children in a down economy.

“The baby boomer generation often fills in the family,” said Lucia Jones, executive director for the Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging, which helps coordinate federal funds and general resources to senior service agencies in metropolitan Chicago, including organizations in Kane, DuPage, Grundy,

Kankakee, Kendall, Lake, McHenry and Will counties.

“They are often saddled with responsibilities to their parents, as well as their younger children,” she added.

The agency coordinates with local groups such as ElderDay Center and Fox Valley Volunteer Hospice in Kane County.

Kane County has seen an increase in demand for ser-

vices by those in their early 60s, according to the 2011-12 Kane County Community Health Assessment.

“The fastest-growing age group in Kane is the age group 55 to 69 years, which increased by more than 70 percent,” according to the assessment. “In fact, the 60 to 64 year age group doubled in the last 10 years.”

Many of these baby boom-

ers have found themselves serving as caregivers for their parents, who are living longer than previous generations and increasingly are preferring to age at home, Jones said.

That’s the situation for Campton Hills residents Sandy and Pat Ryan – he was born during the baby boom – who have welcomed Sandy’s 83-year-old mother to share

their home with them and their two teenage daughters, Sara and Emily.

Sandy Ryan said her mother probably takes care of her family more than they take care of her, but she noted she handles some of her mother’s medical needs, like talking with doctors.

Having her at the house can be stressful at times on both sides, she said.

Autumn Leaves staff acknowledged that adult children often struggle with feelings of guilt because they promised their parents they wouldn’t put them in a home. After doing so, however, many wish they had done so sooner, staff members said.

In addition to their parents, baby boomers often feel obligated to help their children, many struggling to find jobs in a slow economy that includes persistently high unemployment.

A 2012 survey from the National Endowment for Financial Education found that 59 percent of parents are providing financial support – such as living expenses and transportation costs – to adult children who no longer are in school.

The findings were released at the same time the MetLife Mature Market Institute surveyed 2,123 Americans ages 21 to 65 on the level of financial responsibility people of different generations feel in a variety of fam-

ily roles.

In it, 77 percent of baby boomers interviewed said they wish they could do more for their children.

About 44 percent of baby boomers felt an absolute or strong responsibility to provide for their child’s higher education, and a near identical amount – 45 percent – felt the same way toward allowing a child to live at home during times of financial difficulty.

Geneva resident Margaret Evans, 57, works four jobs – three part-time and one full-time – because, in addition to having many bills, she is supporting her 22-year-old son.

Her son recently finished the automotive program at Waubonsee Community College and hopes to sign up for a program at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Evans said, noting that expense.

“He’s got to find a job,” she said.

Brown – the St. Charles baby boomer who encouraged his three children to live on their own after graduating from college – said they returned home for a short period before finding other living arrangements.

“It’s good for everybody,” he said.

ST. CHARLES – Before Bob Brown retired at age 55, he did a lot of research on how to develop a satisfying retirement plan.

Now 66, he said people are amazed by how busy he is.

The married father of three – his children are in their late 20s and early 30s – is president of the St. Charles Noon Rotary Club; participates in the Silver Foxes, a seniors group at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in St. Charles; has taken art courses at community colleges; and helps adults improve their English language skills through a program at Waubonsee Community Col-

lege.

The adults he tutors come to the United States for the opportunities it gives them, he said. Here, he said, they aren’t judged by what their father did or the size of their hometown; they can start a business.

“They just need a little bit of help,” Brown said, noting August will mark his 11th year with the tutoring program.

In addition to volunteering, Brown has made time to travel – something he wanted to do more of when he retired, he said. His recent vacations include Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany, last September and the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C., he said.

“Having traveled around the world, I found that we’re all the same,” Brown said.

“Regardless of culture, country, language, most of the time religion, we’re all the same.”

Lori Linkimer, 58, active as a volunteer

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Lori Linkimer grew up with parents who both took time to volunteer and, at 58, she does as well.

“I’m somebody who believes in civic responsibility and duty,” said Linkimer, the managing broker of a real estate company in St. Charles. “If you can help, you help.”

And help she has.

Throughout the years, the former PTO mom and retired teacher has served on the St. Charles school board, coached softball and soccer and volunteered at her church, Bethlehem Lutheran in St. Charles, she said. About six years ago she joined the St. Charles Noon

Kiwanis Club, an organization she said was very dear to her father’s heart. “[Kiwanis] was exactly where I wanted to put my time and effort,” Linkimer said.

Despite her volunteering efforts so far, she said, there are still many she hasn’t had the opportunity to do. Her volunteering bucket list includes being involved with CASA – Court Appointed Special Advocates – and building with Habitat for Humanity, she said.

“I’ll get there,” she said.

Linkimer and her husband, Mike, have three adopted children and three young grandchildren, she said, adding a fourth grandchild is due in September.

“My girls had their babies close together, and I love it,” she said. “It’s not quiet when we’re all together.”

The Browns and Ryans are hardly alone in caring for a parent: Nearly 10 million adult children older than 50 provide care for their aging parents, a 2011 study from MetLife on the caregiving costs for working baby boomers found.

The total lifetime financial impact – in terms of lost wages, Social Security benefits and private pensions – for the average baby boomer to care for their parents is $303,880, the study found.

That amount includes leaving the labor force early and/ or reduced hours of work.

The caregiver role ranges from helping with the bills to helping with medical treatment. About one-third of caregivers, the study showed, work fewer hours or leave the workforce early to focus on caring for their elderly parents.

“The trend is that people want to live in their homes and not in an institutionalized program,” said Betsy Creamer, supervisor for the Illinois Department on Aging’s Office of Older American Services. “Baby boomers are providing more and more care to their families as caregivers.”

Creamer’s office helps administer the department’s community care program, which provides in-home services for seniors. Illinois has seen a “fairly dramatic” increase in demand for the program, which now serves 46,750 more residents than in 2003, Creamer said.

But baby boomers also are turning to assisted living places for help. The Au-

State superintendent testifies in merger case

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – State Superintendent of Education Christopher Koch testified for more than an hour Wednesday during the bench trial about the legality of a school reconfiguration plan in St. Charles.

An appellate court has directed the 16th Judicial Circuit to determine whether the reorganization of Richmond and Davis elementary schools in 2011 qualified as a school improvement plan under the Illinois School Code.

The trial, presided by Kane County Judge David Akemann, is expected to last several days.

Robert Swain, an attorney for St. Charles School District 303, said failing adequate yearly progress scores led to Richmond losing about 120 students over two years. That led to the district’s initiative that combined attendance zones with Davis, he said.

Attorney Timothy Dwyer – who is representing parents affected by the changes at the schools – asserted that the district circumvented No Child Left Behind regulations when it turned the K-5 schools into schools for grades 3-5 and K-2.

The reconfiguration resulted in a different AYP status at Richmond, which had repeatedly missed academic bench-

marks.

“They eliminated four years of failure at Richmond,” Dwyer said.

By doing so, he said, the district potentially avoided a major school restructuring process that is mandated when a school fails AYP for six consecutive years.

“What they did was illegal,” Dwyer said.

Koch – who was called as an expert witness by District 303 – said the change in AYP status was based on the population changes of students and teachers at Richmond.

The AYP designation should be a fair representation of students in that building, he said, noting his staff evaluates such status-change requests.

“We’re not acting outside the law in doing this,” Koch said.

The attorneys questioned Koch at length about school improvement plans, which schools are required to create after repeatedly failing to meet AYP. Although Richmond had a school improvement plan, that doesn’t mean the district couldn’t go above and beyond that by making other changes, such as those affecting personnel and the grades the school serves, Koch said.

Attendance boundaries are “clearly matters of local control,” he said.

Sandra and Bogdan Stanek allege teachers at St. Charles North High School failed to follow their son’s individualized education program and created a hostile environment in which he was “humiliated, harassed, retaliated and discriminated against and men-

tally abused,” according to court documents filed in Kane County in April.

The complaint indicated the Staneks were appealing to the 16th Judicial Circuit Court after a hearing officer with the Illinois State Board of Education dismissed their request

for a prisoner of war camp for 250 German soldiers during World War II. Arcadia Publishing released the book this year.

Does Obama favor freedom of press?

THE WASHINGTON POST President Barack Obama seems to be of two minds when it comes to freedom of information and the role of the press. On his first day in office, he committed his administration to “creating an unprecedented level of openness in government,” and he proclaimed in a recent address that a free press is essential to democracy.

At the same time, Obama’s administration has conducted the most far-reaching campaign against leaks in recent memory, with twice as many prosecutions as in all previous administrations combined. While both of these ideas may be strongly held by the president, they are coming into conflict.

We are firm believers in maintaining a balance between secrecy and openness, but we worry that, in all the hysteria over leaks, it may tip too much to one side.

A discouraging sign came in the July 19 decision of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit, which held that New York Times reporter James Risen had no privilege under the First Amendment

that would allow him to refuse to testify about a confidential source in a leak investigation.

If allowed to stand, the ruling could jeopardize the ability of reporters to protect the identity of sources, a vital tool for journalistic inquiry.

The Risen case underscores the need to write into federal law a shield for the news media. Some 49 states and the District of Columbia have established media shield laws or recognized such privileges in court. A good place to start on the federal level is with legislation recently introduced by Sens. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. While the proposed law would not offer absolute protection, it would introduce a “balancing test” for a court to use before compelling disclosure from a reporter.

The test would take into account the public interest in the disclosure and in maintaining the free flow of information. This should restrain overzealous prosecutors from roping journalists into leak prosecutions and sustain the uneasy – but essential – balance between secrecy and openness.

Many lessons learned in the swimming pool Holding a job during the school year is tough for most teenagers. In between school, sports and keeping up with friends, attempting to work part time can be tough. That’s why a lot of teens, myself included, have summer jobs.

I’m fortunate enough to have a pool in my backyard, which is nice for hot days and for getting spending money for college. After being on a swim team since I was 5, I got my lifeguard certification and have been teaching half-hour swim lessons all summer. I’ve been teaching since June, and though I’m no longer taking new clients, I’m continuing up until I leave for school.

Like any lifeguard can tell you, being out in the water and sun for eight hours at a time isn’t as fun as it sounds.

I now smell permanently of chlorine and sunscreen, even though I still have a constant sunburn that no amount of aloe vera can calm.

However, I’ve gotten more than just a one-piece swimsuit tan from my summer of swim lessons. I’ve had kids who wouldn’t get off the steps in the first lesson swim in the deep end. I had a 9-year-old swim 15 yards with no breath.

I’ve learned a remarkable amount about how to get kids to face their fears. The trick is to get them to have fun while they’re close to something that they’re scared of.

Play as close to the deep end as you can for a few minutes.

Work on just jumping off the diving board before you graduate to learning real diving.

Despite being kicked in the gut and the face a few times, the kids aren’t the toughest part. Although most

of the parents I work with are great, I’ve had a few problems with parents. Leaving during lessons (I require them to stay), yelling at their kids while I’m teaching them or bringing other children to the lesson and letting them run rampant around my backyard while screaming. It’s remarkably difficult to teach a 6-year-old to breathe to the side while your attention keeps getting grabbed by a toddler who’s dangerously close to the deep end.

Although I do love my job and usually try to stop myself if I start complaining, it can get annoying when a parent consistently forgets to show up to lessons or decides to cancel without telling me.

Just because I’m a teenager doesn’t mean that I can be disrespected. I love working in the water and working with kids – every time a kid really “gets” something because of me, I get even more excited to pursue a career in education. I can really see that the kids I teach have learned a lot this summer, but I think I’ve learned even more.

NORTH AURORA – A North Aurora couple refiled a lawsuit seeking damages for invasion of privacy after their neighbors’ 16-year-oldson placed a hidden camera in their bedroom.

David and Katerina Speers originally filed the suit in December against Scott and Teresa Thompson and their teenage son, whom the Speers previously hired as their baby-sitter.

They were seeking more than $50,000 in damages.

Judge Edward Schreiber in April dismissed both counts of the lawsuit without prejudice, saying the plaintiff’s attorney failed to provide specific facts and damages.

Schreiber said the fact that the device was capable of recording was insufficient,

adding that the suit would have to allege that the device captured some kind of private acts.

A hearing on the case is set Aug. 27.

In their amended complaint, the Speers allege that they suffer from anxiety, depression, embarrassment and the need to see therapists because of the hidden camera.

They also contend that their neighbors knew their son, who has Asperger’s syndrome, is prone to make poor decisions and they “failed to carefully supervise his activities and determine the location and use of the aforesaid camera.”

In asking for the lawsuit to be dismissed, the Thompsons’ attorney, Thomas Scherschel, argued that parents are not liable for the actions of their children merely because of the parent-child relationship.

Tentative budget for District 101 shows surplus of $615,000

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia School District 101’s tentative budget for 2013-14 shows a $615,000 surplus.

Batavia school board members Tuesday voted to place the budget on public display.

Board members are set to participate in a budget workshop Aug. 13, and a public hearing on the budget is set for 7 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Rosalie M. Jones Administration Center, 335 W. Wilson St., Batavia.

The tentative budget shows revenues of $81 million, and expenses of $80.4 million.

The district is set to collect $57 million in property taxes, an almost 6 percent increase

from last year.

Most of that increase stems from property that was in a tax increment financing district in Aurora that included Chicago Premium Outlets Mall, said Kris Monn, the district’s assistant superintendent for finance.

That district expired in 2012.

A TIF district allows the amount of tax revenue a taxing district receives from the area to be frozen at current levels.

A TIF district can be in place for up to 23 years.

About $51 million in salaries and benefits are included in the tentative budget.

The amount of salaries will go up 2.5 percent from last year, and the amount of benefits will increase 16 percent from the previous year.

MEET THE CAST

ST. CHARLES – One of the most beloved stories of all time is on the stage at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles.

“The Wizard of Oz” is currently being performed by the Fox Valley Repertory Youth Ensemble.

Featuring 30 actors ranging in age from 5 to 17, “Oz” is the first show to be put on by the Youth Ensemble this year.

Actors involved with the show went through an extensive audition process to become cast members.

John Gawlik, artistic director for Fox Valley Repertory,

said those looking to be involved came with a song and monologue to perform for the show’s director and music director.

In certain cases, actors were asked to perform a different song or monologue suggested by the directors.

After the initial audition, those who stood out were asked back for a callback audition, where they performed against other students who were up for the same roles.

Although Fox Valley Repertory operates out of St. Charles, Gawlik said that anyone who lives in the area can participate in productions.

The Scarecrow who says “if I only had a brain” lacks self-confidence. It is interesting that Maegan Daniels from Batavia plays this role. Daniels has been acting since she was 5 and believes her personality is opposite of the Scarecrow’s. Daniels’ favorite part of acting is becoming another person.

This is no problem with the loose physicality of scarecrow movements, overalls stuffed to the brim with straw and colorful face makeup.

She’s had to step out of her comfort zone for this role, but her favorite part about acting is “becoming the characters.”

Three area restaurants awarded for best wine lists

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com With wine lists that boast hundreds of labels, three local restaurants recently have earned accolades for having some of the best wine selections in the world.

This year, Wine Spectator magazine awarded more than 2,800 restaurants with the Award of Excellence, including Wildwood and Atwater’s in Geneva, and The Turf Room in North Aurora.

All three restaurants have graced the Restaurant Wine List Awards in previous years. The Award of Excellence recognizes restaurants with wine lists offering a diverse selection of 100 or more wines that are “well-presented and thematically match the restaurant’s cuisine in both price and style,” according to Wine Spectator. Award winners are named across all 50 U.S. states, 76 countries and 11 cruise ships.

“The wine list and menu are very carefully paired together. To be recognized for being able to do that well is very nice.”

Atwater’s has about 125 wines to choose from, including a first-growth Grand Cru and Chateau Haut-Brion.

Mark Czubak is a sommelier at Atwater’s – a job title that requires him to know a lot about wine. He said Atwater’s tries to fill its wine lists with bottles from all different regions of the world at all different price points.

The wines span from the West Coast to several countries, including Germany, Italy, Argentina, Spain and Portugal.

Wildwood also offers a reserve wine list with some better-known, high-end wines,

such as Hillside Select. The menu also has a selection of about 20 wines-by-the-glass, ranging in price from $7 to $15.

“I think we’re probably known for the breadth of our selection, and our markups are low,” he said.

The restaurant also is known for its “wine flights,” where customers can try three 1.5-ounce pours of wines by the glass. Wildwood is doing a special wine flight during the Geneva Arts Fair, which starts Saturday, July 27. Those who buy $10 wine flights during the weekend of the Geneva Arts Fair can sample a chardonnay, a pinot noir and a zinfandel. Half of the proceeds will go to three charities: Snowball Express for families of fallen soldiers, the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the Society for Prevention of Cruelness to

Animals.

In addition to wine flights, the restaurant also does occasional wine tastings to showcase its award-winning wine list.

“It’s very nice to be recognized,” Neary said. “Our guests certainly recognize that we’ve got a very extensive, well-priced wine list.”

Tammy Goldstein, general manager of the restaurant, said the list is about 80 percent American wine, and the other 20 percent comes from all over the world, including Argentina, France, Italy and Germany.

Goldstein said it’s nice to be recognized for the second year in a row, especially because the competition includes well-known, popular chains.

“For us to be recognized is just very pleasant,” she said. “We’re doing something right.”

Some of its specialty wines include Premier Wines from Napa Valley. Goldstein said the wine is special because only a handful of cases are produced, and The Turf Room has 12 bottles of the wine, and only about 60 bottles have been produced.

The restaurant also offers about 40 wines-by-the-glass, allowing customers to taste wines without having to buy a whole bottle. It also does wine flights and decanter pours, which are 8- to 16-ounce pours for those who want the best wine pairing with a meal.

St. Charles native nabs lead role in Ninja Turtles movie

Cowabunga! The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are making a comeback to the silver screen. And filling the shell of the blue-bandana’d, katana-wielding lead role – Leonardo – is former St. Charles East High School football star Pete Ploszek.

The St. Charles native, who appeared in episodes of “Parks and Recreation” and “Shameless” before nabbing the lead role in the new TMNT film, is acting alongside “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” actor Alan Ritchson (Raphael), “Breaking Bad’s” Jeremy Howard (Donatello), “Twilight’s” Noel Fisher (Michelangelo), Megan Fox (April O’Neil) and William Fichtner (The Shredder).

The Ninja Turtles reboot – backed by Michael Bay’s production company and distributed by Paramount Pictures – is scheduled to be released in summer 2014 as the fifth film in the series.

Ploszek, 26, graduated from St. Charles East High School in 2005 and attended Princeton University, where he played on the varsity football team for four years.

Ploszek said his first big break in acting came when he got in to the University of Southern California’s School of Theatre, where he received a Master of Fine Arts in 2012.

With filming underway, Ploszek has been putting his athletic prowess to the test.

Ditching the bulky bodysuits and actor voice-overs seen in previous turtle films, the turtles reboot will utilize interactive Weta Digital animation and motion-capture technology seen in films like “Avatar” and “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.”

During filming of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” on July 10, Pete Ploszek designated some time during his lunch break to Kane County Chronicle features editor Kara Silva to discuss the movie, his hometown and life as an up-and-coming Hollywood actor.

KS: Where do you call home now?

PP: Well, my heart is

always in St. Charles, but home, now, is in Los Angeles. I live there with my wife.

KS: Did you always want to be an actor growing up?

PP: No, that’s a great question – no. I had interest in it. I had an older brother who had done a few musicals in high school, and that kind of exposed me to it.

I always considered myself a fan of movies and theater and entertainment on all those levels. But it wasn’t until college. I was playing football, and I got a chance to explore all of the offerings that a university has, and that’s when I took my first acting class – sophomore year of 2006.

Ever since then, it kind of took off. I pretty much fell in love with it. It was a nice sort of break from the football season. It’s such a yearround sport at the college level that [acting] was a great outlet. I got to try something new and exciting and challenge myself in new ways.

They’re so similar – athletics and acting – to be part of a play on production or be part of a team. The disciplines are so similar, which has helped me so much.

KS: What would you say was your first big break as an actor?

PP: My first big break would be getting into grad school. After Princeton it was really the only clear next step for me. While friends of mine were going on to Wall

Street, consulting and banking, I realized that wasn’t for me.

This new art form was where my heart was, so getting into graduate school and being able to study at the masters level was the first big break. I had to take the time to learn what I’m doing and study [acting] and understand it as a craft that needs to be studied.

KS: You’re starring as Leonardo, the leader, in the new Ninja Turtles film coming out next summer. So, what was the audition process like for that, and what kind of qualities do you possess that helped you land that role?

PP: What I really loved about the [audition] process itself was that when it came time to test for the roles, they brought all of the actors that were in the running for the part, and we weren’t working against one another. There wasn’t a competitive nature to it, which there normally is when it comes to this type of casting. It was a chemistry testing to see who could be

brothers and who could have that camaraderie and that relationship.

In terms of Leonardo, it’s funny, I say, ‘I still can’t believe it that I’m stepping in to fill the shoes of this character.’

But Leonardo being the leader of the group and the eldest of the brothers, I fell back on my athletic upbringing and understanding what a disciplined and regimented style could do in terms of performance and in terms of succeeding and propelling you to the next level, wherever that may be.

And being one of five kids with three brothers, that certainly helped. I’m not the oldest, but that dynamic is quite familiar to me. And I’ve been tapping into that as much as I can.

KS: What has it been like working with big names like Megan Fox and Will Arnett – people who you’ve seen on the big screen and are now working with?

PP: That’s been such a surreal aspect to this experience but one that you make yourself at home with. You realize that you’re all in this together and you all have to tell the story. So, with that comes wonderful relationships.

KS: In previous Ninja Turtles films, stuntmen would be

wearing turtle suits and actors would be doing the voiceovers, but now you’re using a technology similar to that of ‘Avatar’ what has that process been like?

PP: That has been such a wonderful, eye-opening and educational experience. The technology that we’re using is sitting at the frontier of movies. It’s such an incredible technology in its ability to capture facial movements and physical movements – our voices and choices as actors, and it has really allowed these turtles to come to life. It’s going to be a wonderful evolution of this story in the franchise.

KS: If your own acting career could mirror anyone else’s at this point, who would it be?

PP: I think what I’m most looking forward to is carving out my own niche and place in this industry.

It’s easy to look at other actors and see a film that you would have loved to do or a story you would have loved to tell, but I’ve discovered in my short time being in [the entertainment] industry that everyone has their own unique path, which is representative of who they really are.

So, I look forward to that journey of discovering and uncovering what that is and what I can share.

Eric Schelkopf: You’re touring with a lot of different bands this summer – The Fixx, Naked Eyes, A Flock of Seagulls, Animotion.

Why do you think Wang Chung is a good fit with these bands?

Is it because you are from the same era?

Jack Hues: I think there is a bit of an obsession with packaging music by genre, so people don’t have to think outside of the box. I think actually The Fixx and Wang Chung are a pretty good fit.

We are doing a bunch of gigs with them. The history with The Fixx does go back a long time. Around 1980, there was a club in London called the 101 Club.

And they used to put out albums with tracks from bands that they recorded at the club.

And I recall, there was an album with Wang Chung and The Fixx on the same record.

We were doing stuff together then, and now it’s come around again, at a much later date.

ES: Speaking of the ’80s, are you having as much fun playing now as you did in the ’80s?

JH: I think more fun, actually. In the ’80s, we did big tours with The Cars and Tina Turner, and that’s fabulous. We were playing in big arenas. I’m not complaining about that.

pressure. Back in the ’80s, it felt like each move you made, each gig you did, each track you recorded determined the fate of your career.

Whereas now, everybody knows who we are and have their opinions about us. Most people come with an open mind, because I think you need that with Wang Chung.

We do quite a lot of varied stuff. It’s more relaxing now.

I certainly enjoy performing much more these days.

ES: I imagine that you will be playing “Everybody Have Fun Tonight” during your show at The Arcada Theatre. I understand that the line “Everybody Wang Chung tonight,” that was something you came up with at the last minute.

JH: When we were doing the demo, I just ad libbed it toward the end of the song.

And when our producer heard it, he was kind of like, “You’ve got to use that line. That’s the chorus.”

And I thought, “Oh, God, we can’t do that.” But he convinced us.

The pressure was on us back then to have a proper hit.

ES: And you probably get asked this a lot, but how do you

the name because it meant something. It just created a space.

What I love is that people have run with that, and they’ve filled that space with what they want to put in it. So it means a slightly different thing to different people.

Whatever it is, it’s good with me.

ES: Do you think that song has overshadowed your other work at all, like the song “Dance Hall Days?” Do you think those songs have become lost in the shuffle?

JH: Certainly that is the song that everybody knows Wang Chung by, and I guess to the extent that you’re defined by the genre you’ve had success in.

A lot of people who come to our gigs love “To Live and Die In L.A.,” which is obviously a much more serious song. And a lot of people love “Dance Hall Days.”

We have this new album, “Tazer Up!”, and on that album we use genre in a much more playful kind of way. And I dislike the way that music is defined by genre.

As a musician, I like the freedom to work in whatever area I want to work in. I like to mix it up.

ES: What kind of advice would you give to someone trying to break into the music business?

JH: Just learn to play your instrument, and that’s it. The people that I know that are successful in it are pretty serious about it.

In addition to performing onstage, Fox Valley Repertory offers students positions to help backstage with the behind-the-scenes process.

Those interested also can assist with costumes and makeup, or work as assistant directors or music directors.

Each “Wizard of Oz” performance ended with an appeal to those in the audience to explore what Fox Valley Repertory offers. While the productions put on by the theater take place at Pheasant Run Resort, the offices of Fox Valley Repertory are located across the street.

Gawlik said that because Fox Valley Repertory functions as a nonprofit company, profits made from onstage productions only cover a portion of the overall budget.

Also after each “Oz” show, the theater took donations to help fund the demolition of the wall between two rooms at the office in order to create the first classroom/rehearsal space to be open 24 hours.

They hope to have the space set up by the end of the year.

“The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” written by L. Frank Baum in 1900, tells the story of Dorothy Gale and her dog, Toto, who are swept up from Kansas in a twister and brought to the magical land of Oz. Adapted into the wellknown film starring Judy Garland, Baum’s story was first made into a musical in 1902 and is performed across the world today.

“The Wizard of Oz” can be seen on the Pheasant Run Resort Mainstage, 4051 E. Main St., St. Charles, at 10:30 a.m.

RiverEdge Park continues to make its mark

The venue July 19 played host to Broadway star Idina Menzel, another fine choice for RiverEdge Park early on in the venue’s inaugural season.

RiverEdge Park kicked off its season in June with the Blues on the Fox festival, which featured two days of bands.

But the RiverEdge sound system proved it also was more than capable of handling the intricacies of the 55-piece Paramount Orchestra that backed Menzel. The sound was crystal clear as it wafted across RiverEdge Park, which also allowed the crowd to hear Menzel’s powerful voice in full clarity.

The preferred seating chairs that replaced the benches that were set up during the Blues on the Fox Festival also made the concert experience feel more intimate, creating an atmosphere more suited for a Broadway star.

Menzel struck all the right chords with the audience as well, drawing from her work in “Wicked,” which won her a Tony award, and even eliciting fans to help her in singing “Take

The Aurora Christian football team is breaking in a new quarterback this summer, and that’s proven to be no easy task.

It’s not that Austin Bray isn’t highly talented – he’s “being looked at by a lot of big schools,” Eagles coach Don Beebe said.

The 6-foot-3, 221-pound junior unloads when he delivers a football. Beebe said he was clocked at 56 mph on a throw at a camp at the University of Mississippi, and suggested it might be the hardest a high school quarterback has been timed slinging a football.

As a player, Beebe caught whistling passes from rocket-armed NFL great Brett Favre, but at the high school level, hauling in such screaming spirals is far from a given. Aurora Christian receivers Noah Roberts, Brandon Walgren, Noah Hagerty, Kimani Moberly and tight end Jackson Carpenter are bearing the brunt of Bray’s impressive arm.

“It’s been a big challenge,” Beebe said. “I’ve been talking to Austin about this, basically to know when to put an extra little zip, and when he has to take a little off of it. For a high school kid to catch a ball is very difficult when it gets on them that fast.”

for the Eagles’ starting job as a sophomore before Beebe decided on Ryan McQuade, who continued the Eagles’ tradition of excellence at the position as Aurora Christian won its second straight IHSA Class 3A state championship.

Beebe said Bray’s talent is unquestioned but he still has to learn the many intangibles it takes to thrive running a varsity offense.

“Being able to throw a football is one thing,” Beebe said.

“You have to be able to lead, win games and be accurate with tight throws and timing on throws. … He’s come a long way this summer.”

Aurora Christian has been active as usual this summer on the 7-on-7 circuit, including competing in a national competition in Arkansas. The Eagles suffered heavy graduation losses from last year’s team – Northern Illinois recruits Chad Beebe, Joel Bouagnon and Brandon Mayes, plus standout receiver Cory Windle and McQuade are among the departures – making this offseason especially crucial.

High school teams are winding down their summer programs before taking a break ahead of official preseason practice beginning Aug. 14.

“If you don’t have it all in by the end of summer, pretty much there’s not enough time,” Beebe said.

Tinsley brings better intelligence than that on each individual he’s teaching, but after counseling the Cougars for much of the past week, finds most players fit the same category on the bases.

“A lot of them are still pretty raw as far as stealing and things like that, so they still need a lot of work,” Tinsley said. “But you just have to keep continuing to do it and hopefully they start figuring out what they need to do, what kind of jumps they have and basically, in the end, being their own self-evaluator.”

Some baseball people lament baserunning as a lost art. That hits especially close to home in the Cougars’ current six-game road trip to Beloit and Peoria.

Through Tuesday, the Cougars (70), Snappers (69) and Chiefs (67) have stolen the fewest bases in the Midwest League. Bowling Green leads the 16-

team MWL with 170.

Style, not substance, remains Tinsley’s focus, which adds up for a former big league outfielder who registered just 41 steals in 61 attempts in parts of five seasons with Seattle, Boston and Philadelphia.

He admits to taking a “more simplified” approach in Kane County than during stops in Double-A and Triple-A, but the scenarios are mostly similar.

“Paying attention to balls in the dirt, what pitch is being thrown, Lee Tinsley all the stuff you can do to be advancing,” Cougars left fielder Reggie Golden said.

Tinsley works with players between infield and batting practice, usually beginning at first base and shuttling around the horn, discussing strategies at each stop.

His coaching career followed an equally mobile path. Tinsley is a former Arizona Diamondbacks first-base coach and Seattle Mariners third-base coach. Because he played his final big league game at 28 in 1997, Tinsley’s beginnings as a coach overlapped with the end of the playing careers of Johnson and Cougars pitching coach Ron Villone.

Tinsley joined the Cubs in Sep-

tember 2010. Many current Cougars worked with him at Short-A Boise last season. After spring training, designated hitter/first baseman Rock Shoulders called Tinsley’s help instrumental in his transition as an occasional outfielder.

“They know I played in the big leagues and know I coached there, too,” Tinsley said. “There’s some credibility there, so when I am teaching something like baserunning and outfield, they understand where I’m coming from because I played. It just makes it easier to teach.”

Tinsley has visited the Cougars a handful of times this season. He doesn’t envision himself reinventing the wheel in either area of expertise next time through.

That’s fine by Johnson.

“Just a continual thing, kind of like what we do every day,” Johnson said.

“You repeat yourself, repeat things a lot. Just got to keep drilling and drilling the basic fundamentals, because sometimes people will kind of get away from what they need to be doing and you’ve got to get them back on track.”

Beloit second baseman Chris Bostick opened the season in a slump, but has batted .323 (88 for 272) since May and ranks third in the league with 71 RBIs. Bostick turned down a scholarship from St. John’s to sign with the parent Oakland A’s, who selected him in the 44th round in 2011.

SCN grad eliminated from golf tourney ITASCA – St. Charles North graduate Ariana Furrie was eliminated Wednesday in the first round of match play at the IJGA Chick Evans Junior Amateur tournament.

Furrie, seeded 12th out of the 16 girls’ match play qualifiers, fell to Nikki Marquardt of Long Grove, 4 and 3, at Itasca Country Club.

Baker still struggling for Cougars KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE BELOIT, Wis. – Cubs pitcher Scott Baker made his third rehab start for the Kane County Cougars on Wednesday night at Pohlman Field, but it resulted in a 5-1 loss to the Beloit Snappers.

Baker (0-2) surrendered singles to the first two hitters that he faced, but Daniel Robertson was caught stealing leaving only Aaron Shipman on the bases with two outs.

Renato Nunez put the Snappers (62-39, 19-12) on the board anyway as he blasted a tworun homer to left.

Baker bounced back with a perfect bottom of the second and nearly got through the third without allowing a base runner, but Robertson doubled with two outs before scoring on a Chris Bostick base hit to bring Beloit’s lead to three. Baker then walked the only man he faced in the bottom of the fourth before

exiting the contest.

Seth Streich (10-5) tossed seven innings for the Snappers and didn’t let the Cougars (37-59, 7-23) get on base until the fifth when they loaded the bases on singles, but Oliver Zapata popped out to end the threat. Streich finally coughed up a run in the seventh on a two-out RBI double to Reggie Golden, bringing home Jeimer Candelario.

Beloit put the ballgame out of reach in the bottom

of the fifth as Jose Rosario came on relief and walked Robertson before Nunez connected on another two-run jack. That was the only hit allowed by Rosario in his four innings.

Award-winner Folarin finds place in literary world

By KRISSAH THOMPSON The Washington Post There was a time when Tope Folarin came almost daily to the Politics and Prose bookstore in Washington not to sip iced lattes, as he’s doing on this recent Sunday afternoon, but to learn his craft by reckoning with language.

Back then, he sat in this bookstore cafe and copied poetry into a raggedy notebook.

“It pained me that I couldn’t afford to buy the books,” Folarin says, leaning in to take another sip.

Four years ago, as he wrote down verse after verse, his academic pedigree as a graduate of Morehouse College and a Rhodes Scholar were meaningless. He was out of work and unsure where he fit into the Washington scene. He did know that the story he would someday tell would be of the complexity of blending cultural and national identities. In his case, Nigerian and American.

Last week, the 31-year-old was awarded the prestigious Caine Prize, given annually for a short story by an African writer. With the prize, Folarin gained instant legitimacy, but his achievement also spurred a conversation in the literary world about the boundaries of the far-flung African diaspora and what it means to be an African writer.

Folarin, who has lived in the District of Columbia for five years, has not returned to the homeland of his Nigerian parents since he was about a year old.

His childhood memories are those of the place he was born, Ogden, Utah, and later Grand Prairie, Texas, where he was reared.

Lagos is a place he sees only in his dreams. His mother, who became ill when Folarin was young, returned there when he was 6 years old. He has not seen her since. She

So, is he an African writer? Is he an American writer? Does growing up virtually cloistered in Utah, eating moin moin and jollof rice in a household where Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey are played on repeat, make you Nigerian enough?

“It’s the same conversation I’ve been having my entire life about ‘where do I fit?’ “Folarin says. “I was prepared for the questions.”

Amid the buzz of the bookstore cafe, his voice is devoid of any discernible accent – a result of his father’s insistence that his children mimic newscasters Dan Rather and Peter Jennings. Folarin, slight and ebony-skinned and dressed in a polo shirt and jeans, seems as much at home behind the cafe table as behind his blackframed glasses.

He says the mosaic of short stories he is currently polishing form a novel, and the story for which he won the Caine Prize – “Miracle” – is a chapter from that as-yet-unpublished book. “Miracle” is set in Texas at an evangelical Ni-

gerian church where the congregation has come to witness the healing powers of a blind pastor-prophet. The prophet praises the flock as those who “haven’t forgotten your people back home.”

The boy at the center of the story, who is unnamed and narrates the piece, grapples with the meaning of “miracle” when the prophet attempts to heal his poor eyesight. He comes to the realization that the miraculous has been before him all along: in his family’s ability to stay together “despite the terror of my mother’s abrupt departure” and in his own ability to see with his thick glasses when centuries ago that would have been impossible.

Folarin believes his work has a place in the dynamic space occupied by young writers of the African diaspora.

Critical acclaim has come to several, including Taiye Selasi, a Ghanaian Nigerian writer who was born in London, raised in Boston and lives in New York, New Delhi and Rome and Zimbabwean NoViolet Bulawayo, an earlier winner of the Caine Prize and now a Stegner Fellow at Stanford University. (The Caine Prize may be won by African nationals and by those born in or whose parents were born in Africa.)

Folarin brings up Afropolitanism to refute those who would say he is not a Nigerian writer because he has not spent time in the country. “I haven’t been able to access this [cosmopolitan] lifestyle because I’ve been struggling and hustling my entire life,” he says.

Folarin says he was the first black child to attend his Utah elementary school and recalls the day when a white classmate tried to wipe off Folarin’s dark skin color. When his skin color did not change, the classmate declared Folarin dirty.

Folarin finished high school near the top of his class and enrolled at Morehouse College, the renowned, traditionally black, all-male college. Then he spent a year and a half as an exchange student, first at Bates College in Maine, then at a university in South Africa.

When he returned to Morehouse to complete his final year of study, he was told he had lost some of his financial aid package because he had failed to complete forms while abroad. He was broke, desperate to earn his degree in political science and was living on a friend’s floor. He did what any American would do: He wrote to Oprah.

Two weeks later, the school informed him that his senior year would be covered. (He subsequently met Oprah Winfrey and attributes the financial assistance to her help or the intervention of someone on her team.)

Four months later, Folarin was named a 2004 Rhodes Scholar. At Oxford University, he began to examine whether he should follow his father’s wishes that he earn a law degree at Yale University.

At Oxford, he decided to take a different path.

“When I first got there a friend of mine said, ‘I love Philip Roth,’” says Folarin, who had never heard of the American novelist. He began reading contemporary fiction and worked on what he describes as his first “failed novel.”

After a few years of detours – working as a spokesman for Google in London; taking a low-level position on the Obama campaign; a period of unemployment – Folarin moved to Washington in 2008 and connected with poets and writers here, including E. Ethelbert Miller.

Those connections and that encouragement led Folarin to submit “Miracle” for the Caine Prize.

Keep legs moving to avoid thrombosis Dear Doctor K: Last year I developed deep vein thrombosis (DVT) – blood clots in my legs – during a long international flight. One of the clots got loose and went to my lungs. I’m fine now and am off all medications.

Is it safe for me to fly again?

Dear Reader: Yes, you can fly again if you take some precautions. Before I describe them, though, a little background information is in order.

Deep vein thrombosis is a blood clot that forms inside deep veins in your legs or pelvis. Part of the clot can break away and move through your bloodstream to your lungs. If the clot blocks one or more of the blood vessels in your lungs, it is called a pulmonary embolism (PE). If the clot is big enough, it can damage the lungs. It can even cause sudden death.

We are all at some risk for developing DVT if we do something that slows the blood flow in the veins of our legs. When blood isn’t moving, it tends to clot. One of the things that keeps blood moving through the veins of the legs are your leg muscles.

When you use those muscles – when you walk, for example – they squeeze the veins and keep

When you’re sitting on a long flight, you’re not doing much, if any, walking. Sitting in a cramped plane seat also slows the flow of blood at the knee. When your leg is stretched straight out, blood flows easily through the veins. But when the knee is bent, blood flow slows.

Still, most people who sit on a plane for many hours, never walking and always with their knees bent, will not develop DVT. The fact that you developed a DVT and a PE indicates that you may have been born with a tendency for your blood to clot more easily than is the case for most people. Having one DVT or PE means you are at high risk for another. If you were my patient, I would perform tests for various inherited conditions that cause blood to clot easily. I would also consider whether you should take an anticoagulant medication, such as warfarin, to help protect against blood clots indefinitely.

Now back to airline travel: Prolonged sitting and dehydration – common on long flights – create ideal conditions for blood clots to form. Everyone embarking on a long flight should do these things to minimize the chances of developing a DVT or PE: • Stay hydrated. Drink enough water during the flight to make you get up and use the restroom several times.

• Avoid alcohol, which can dry you out.

• Move your muscles. Stand up and stretch your arms and legs at least once an hour. Walk up and down the aisle, or walk in place. While standing or sitting, do simple exercises such as straightening your knee and stretching your leg and pointing your toes up and down.

• Consider compression stockings. Elastic support stockings keep blood flowing by gently squeezing the legs and moving blood back to the heart. Consider using these when you travel in a seated position for many hours.

The pack should be worn about 2 inches above the waist and with both shoulder straps close to the body.

You are an anorexia nervosa sufferer if the following criteria apply to you: 1. Having tremendous fear of becoming obese that does not go away even if you are losing weight.

2. Claiming to “feel fat” even when skinny.

3. If you continue to lose weight even when reaching the minimal weight for your height and age.

4. If you are losing weight and suffer from no known physical illness.

If you can identify with any of these situations, you should seek professional help.

It’s very difficult to eliminate anorexia nervosa without the guidance and help of a professional therapist.

Dear Abby: I have read you for years, and I must take issue with your answer to “Needs the Right Words.” He asked about his son and his son’s half-brother visiting his beach house. (He didn’t want the half-brother included.)

Once you become a father, it is not all about “you” anymore. The 12-year-old boy is now, and forever will be, his son’s half-brother. Unless this man wants to distance himself from his son and cause permanent damage to their relationship, he needs to get some therapy so he will be able to think of that boy in a different way and can deal with him in the future.

He is NOT in a “good place,” as he stated, if seeing this boy causes such an emotional issue.

The two boys seem to have a good relationship, and a future with his son will – and should – include the half-brother, even if the visits are short ones. – Deborah In Chandler, Ariz.

Some of you read these columns over the Internet. That would have been much harder to do if newspaper owners had foreseen the danger to their printed editions and always charged for everything on their websites.

Now, maybe, it is too late.

Bridge players should also be keeping an eye open for dangers – the fourth letter of my “TRADE” acronym. In particular, it is hard to break the habits of a lifetime when a deal comes along that does not fit into a typical pattern.

In today’s, how should South plan the play in three no-trump, and how should East defeat him?

After a simple Stayman auction, West leads the heart nine, top of touching cards in a suit containing no honors.

South has eight top tricks: three hearts and five clubs. He can get a ninth winner from diamonds. The danger is that the defenders will take the first diamond trick and cash four spades. When declarer needs some help from the defenders, he should put them on the spot as quickly as possible. South should take the first trick with his ace, play a club to the queen, feigning a finesse, and call for a diamond.

Many Easts would play second hand low without even thinking. But an East who is used to deducing the danger will see that declarer has at least eight winners via three hearts and five clubs. If he is allowed to steal a diamond trick, he will be home.

East should dive in with the diamond ace and shift to the spade king. When it holds, he continues with his second spade and the contract dies.
