spent the afternoon Wednesday in the sweltering heat on opening day of the Kane County Fair.

This is my fifth year covering the fair for

the Kane County Chronicle, and I decided to get a better view. The kind attendants of the ferris wheel allowed me to go on to take some aerial photos of the fairgrounds just

as the gates opened. It also was a welcome reprieve from the heat, with a nice breeze from being so high up in the air.

Wedding guests expect to spend more, but couples can cut costs for parties

or Deanne Mitchell, it can all come down to simply making sure the guests know they are appreciated.

Over the years, Mitchell, catering director at Geneva’s Herrington Inn, who oversees the planning of weddings and other social events at the inn’s popular banquet facility, said she has watched many different weddings.

Weddings that are distinctly local in flavor and culture, and others that prominently featured customs from other cultures.

Small weddings. Big weddings. Weddings that produced tears. Others that could make people cringe.

But the most successful weddings, said Mitchell, typically had a trait in common.

“It’s when the bride and the groom make sure their guests know how much goes into just attending a wedding,” Mitchell said. “It can be just a gesture that tells your guests, ‘We are so hon-

ored that you have come, and that some have you have traveled so far, just to share in our celebration.’ ” This year, one survey indicates more people will be celebrating good times with brides and grooms in Kane County and throughout the nation than in recent years, when measured in terms of how much they expect to spend on attending weddings in 2013.

The American Express Spending and Saving Tracker survey, conducted early in 2013 in phone calls to 1,500 adults, indicated that 69 million Americans expected to attend weddings this year.

And those wedding guests expected to spend an average of $539 per wedding.

American Express said that total includes money the would-be wedding guests expected to spend on travel, lodging, new clothes and, of course, gifts for the happy couples.

The survey report notes that the average total is up sharply from last year, when survey respondents indicat-

ed they would spend about 59 percent less to attend weddings.

Local wedding planners said they had seen similar improvements this year over recent years.

At the Herrington, Mitchell said she had noted a general decline in years amid the worst of the Great Recession in the number of guests willing to travel for weddings that required them to stay even one night away from home.

“Guest count for weddings did go down the last few years,” Mitchell said.

However, she said local wedding destinations like the Herrington appear to have benefited this year, in particular, from a growing number of wedding guests willing to extend their wedding travel a little farther from home.

“They might not go off to Disney or fly off to California, but they will stay here a little longer, and make it, maybe, a mini-staycation,” Mitchell said.

Quick tips – the cost of attending a wedding continues to climb, as guests shell out hundreds of dollars, on average, for gifts, travel, lodging and new clothes, among other items.

So what can couples getting married do to help their guests still celebrate with them, but not go broke in the process? Local wedding planners and coordinators Deanne Mitchell at the Herrington Inn in Geneva, Leanne Valdes of You Name It Chicago in Geneva, and Meghan Therese of Exclusive Bridal Styling in Elgin, offer some tips: • Tone down the formality. You don’t have to go casual, but understand that most guests would likely need to buy or rent formal wear for a formal wedding.

• Think local – or at least regional. Guests may not be willing to spring for a long trip to a destination wedding. But they may be willing to pay for a couple of nights at a nice hotel if they can turn the trip into a “mini-staycation.”

• Consolidate the parties just for you. Guests – particularly family or close friends – may feel obligated to attend every event you plan for your wedding. Limit the parties and other events as much as possible to allow people to truly enjoy the time honoring you, and so you don’t come off as inconsiderate.

• Options, options, options. Give your guests as many options as possible for lodging, transportation and parking. And give them ample time to book, so they can take advantage of lower cost fares and rates.

• Attitude of gratitude. Be certain to make sure your guests understand you truly appreciate the investment they’ve made in coming to celebrate your wedding day with you. It doesn’t have to be huge, but don’t wait to say thank you in a card days or weeks after the big day.

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com A heat advisory issued Thursday continues through the end of the day today as hot weather is expected to bring temperatures in the upper 90s with heat index values of up to 109 degrees.

A heat advisory is in effect until 7 tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures are expected to reach the mid- to upper 90s, but the humidity will make it feel more like 103 to 109 degrees.

Traci Wicks, the Geneva Park District’s marketing supervisor, said attendance at Sunset Pool in Geneva has increased with the hot weather, and they’re encouraging lifeguards to take more breaks.

She said they’ve also been giving them popsicles to keep them hydrated and boost their electrolytes.

Chris Bong, superintendent of streets for the city of Geneva, said street workers still are staying busy in the

heat, but they’re taking steps to avoid overheating. He said that because it was hot, street employees started their shifts an hour early Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday was the first time this year that workers had shifted their schedules because of the heat.

“Usually, once or twice a summer we have to do this,” he said. “It really helps the guys out to come in early. It’s at least one hour less of being out in that heat.”

Bong said, for now, they’re avoiding using hot asphalt to patch potholes, and instead are doing some prep-work to fill potholes when the weather’s a little cooler.

Some relief appears to be in sight over the next few days.

Today’s forecast calls for a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, and that chance increases to 50 percent before 1 a.m. Saturday.

Temperatures are expected to drop to a high of 85 Saturday, and they’ll likely drop even lower, to a high of 79 degrees Sunday.

mal Control would collect enough revenue on its own to prevent the need for the county government to pay an annual loan payment on the Animal Control facility later this year, as it was forced to last year.

In the months since the appointment, Animal Control has increased its revenue from collections significantly. Last month, for example, Animal Control collected more than $75,000.

In June 2012, the department brought in about $64,000.

Lauzen has said the department needs to bring in around $72,000 a month to be self-sufficient.

Next year, the department is scheduled to collect $864,000, compared to the $850,000 total forecasted this year.

Jeffers said she expects to hire an administrator this fall, who would assume oversight of the collection efforts.

GENEVA – The man credited by Kane County officials with restoring the fortunes of the county’s troubled Animal Control Department likely will not continue in his current job after the county hires a new animal control director later this year.

The Kane County Health Department, which oversees animal control operations, has presented the Kane County Board with its budget proposal for 2014.

For Animal Control, that budget proposal includes $75,000 a year to pay an administrator for animal control.

But the budget does not set aside any money to pay a billing manager in that department.

“Revenues would have to increase to accommodate that,” said Barbara Jeffers, director of the Kane County

Health Department. “Based on our current projections, we’re not seeing that will be the case.”

Earlier this year, Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen hired Robert Sauceda of South Elgin to serve as Animal Control’s billing manager.

The move came in response to sagging revenues within the department, which Lauzen and Jeffers believed to be the result of a lack of emphasis on the collection of various fees.

Lauzen had initially floated Sauceda’s name to the board to serve as Animal Control administrator. But several County Board members balked.

Lauzen, however, believing he had no time to waste, appointed Sauceda as billing manager, a position for which he did not secure County Board approval.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The third Geneva restaurant cited for serving alcohol underage during Swedish Days compliance checks has come to an agreement with city officials on a fine and punishment, according to consent finding.

Liquor license holders Michael Knuth and Nicholas Mercadante of EvenFlow Music and Spirits, 302 W. State St., agreed to a $1,500 fine and a 24-hour suspension of its liquor license, from 2 a.m. Aug. 16 to 1:59 a.m. Aug. 17, according to the consent order.

A liquor hearing has been set for 6:30 p.m. Monday at City Hall, 22 S. First St., for a

public reading of the consent findings.

By stipulating to the facts and an agreeing to the judgment, the business avoids a contested hearing.

Police perform liquor compliance checks during the festival using underaged agents to see if they can get in and be served. Of 16 checked June 21, EvenFlow was one of three cited.

Mayor Kevin Burns, in his capacity as the city’s liquor commissioner, said in a text that the higher fine was because of an earlier infraction

by EvenFlow.

On Nov. 17, 2012, owner Michael Knuth and his partner, Nicholas Mercadante, were cited for serving alcohol at 4

a.m. in violation of the city’s code.

The liquor code does not allow alcoholic beverages to be served between 2 and 6 a.m. on the licensed premises any day of the week.

EvenFlow was fined $1,000 for that infraction, and the license was suspended for one day.

Knuth could not be reached for comment.

On Monday, the other two license holders also cited in the recent liquor compliance checks during Swedish Days – Sergio’s Mexican Cantina, 30 W. State St., and Fiora’s Restaurant, 317 S. Third St. – each agreed to a $1,000 fine and a one-day suspension of their liquor licenses.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A 21-year-old St. Charles man was sentenced this month to 30 months of probation after he pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana, according to Kane County court records.

Clark C. Weaver was Clark C. charged with Weaver that felony and others last year when authorities from the North Central Narcotics Task Force and the St. Charles Police Department seized about $50,000 in marijuana and other controlled substances, authorities have said.

Authorities reportedly collected 2,002 grams of marijuana, 505 grams

of THC-laced candies and gum, 35 grams of THC oil, 30 grams of psilocybin mushrooms, 0.45 grams of cocaine and miscellaneous drug paraphernalia from an apartment in the 100 block of Walnut Drive in St. Charles.

On July 10, Weaver pleaded guilty to felony possession of 2,000 to 5,000 grams of marijuana as part of a plea agreement accepted by Judge Clint T. Hull, according to court records.

In exchange, court records show, his other charges – felony possession with intent to deliver, two counts of felony possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia – were dropped.

Weaver was sentenced to 30 months of probation and fines and costs totaling $8,335, according to court records.

N. Aurora to remove infested ash trees

North Aurora village trustees Monday approved a $27,000 contract with Fox Valley Tree

Care to remove 142 trees from parkways throughout the village. Many of the trees are in the Willow Lakes subdivision, as well as the Timber Oaks and the Highlands subdivisions.

Other trees are in such subdivisions as Fox Valley Country Club Estates and Pinecreek, and on streets such

as Spruce Street, Wingfoot Drive and Princeton Court.

“They are in bad shape,” Public Works Superintendent Mike Glock said. “They need to come down.”

“If you have a choice between having a more formal wedding or not, I’d say don’t go formal,” Therese said. “Guests usually don’t have formal wear in their closet just waiting to be pulled out.

“They’ll feel obligated to go out and get something and spend money they may use for something else.”

She said she also advises brides in particular to cut down on the number of wedding-related events, such as parties or dinners for which guests need to dole out more dough.

“It’s best to limit those kinds of events, so people don’t have to give more gifts or spend more cash,” Therese said. “If you do too many, it can get to seem inconsiderate.”

Leanne Valdes, owner of the Geneva-based event planning company You Name It Chicago, said she advises couples to give their guests as many options for lodging, transportation and parking, as possible – and then give them as much time to book items as possible.

“Guests attending weddings can and should book travel and lodging early,” Valdes said.

“By far, this is the easiest way to save money.”

Mitchell said she advises couples to not limit their room blocs to just one hotel, but to reserve a few rooms at one hotel and others at nearby properties that are less expensive.

As for gifts, Therese said she recommends to her clients to not limit their registries to brick-and-mortar department stores, but to also register through online retailers.

That offers guests the option to shop for the best prices on identical items, avoid paying more unnecessarily, and still give the couple what they want.

said, the wedding day belongs to the couple.

But they said no matter the venue choice, whether close to home or in a more exotic setting, and no matter the theme or dress code, marrying couples can take simple steps to make their guests feel valued and considered.

Mitchell noted that many of the couples with whom she works opt to include some kind of welcome basket, including certain toiletries and other sundries, that are presented to wedding guests when they check in for their wedding-related stay.

“It’s not anything huge,” she said. “But even something small can go a long way.”

Anonapalooza fest to raise money for Serenity House

By JENNY CASALE editorial@kcchronicle.com Dave Maday is showing his support for those battling addiction by organizing a day of family fun in Geneva to benefit Serenity House in Addison.

Families can enjoy a host of activities at the fifth annual Anonapalooza Family Summerfest from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Good Templar Park, 528 East Side Drive, Geneva. The event is alcohol free.

Serenity House, which will receive the proceeds from the event, provides services for individuals recovering from substance abuse and chemical dependence.

Entertainment at the event will include local musicians performing on two stages, children’s games with

prizes, a bouncy castle, the American Gladiator obstacle course and a silent auction and raffle.

“This event reminds me of the family picnics and parties I went to when I was young,” said Maday, who is Anonapalooza’s co-chair.

“We hung out all day and ate, played and had fun. But this is even better … we have live music.”

Admission is $5 a person, or free for those younger than age 5 or older than 65.

Maday estimated 400 to 500 people will attend.

“This promises to be one of our best events ever this year,” Maday said.

Anonapalooza has supported the efforts of those recovering from alcohol and drug abuse and their loved ones since 2009.

The event is intended to

raise awareness about the effectiveness of addiction prevention, treatment and recovery efforts.

“One of the reasons for this is to show others that people recovering from alcohol and drugs can have a lot of fun” said Serenity House Vice President and Development Director Lisa Snipes.

Founded in 1985, Serenity House, 891 S. Rohlwing Road, has grown from a four-bed cottage to a state-of-the-art addiction treatment facility, serving hundreds of men and women in extended residential care, independent living and outpatient programs.

A full-time staff, including certified addiction counselors, assist clients recovering from chemical dependence and substance abuse under the guidance of a medical director.

North Aurora replacing reverse 911 alert system

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – The village will replace its sixyear-old reverse 911 alert system with the Nixle 360 Internet-based service.

Village trustees Monday voted to buy the Nixle service for $7,815 a year, with unlimited minutes. The village had been paying $8,447 in annual costs for the reverse 911 alert system.

North Aurora Deputy Police Chief Scott Buziecki, who also is the emergency management coordinator, told village trustees the reverse 911 system was outdated and in need of replacement. The replacement of the system was included in the 2013-14 budget.

The reverse 911 system was a hardware-based system consisting of a computer server and 20 dedicated

lines at North Aurora Village Hall, he said.

“The system, while once state of the art, is complicated to use and unreliable,” Buziecki said in a memo to North Aurora Village President Dale Berman and village trustees. “There are frequent technical problems that impact the reliability of the systems. The system started with telephone listing data from the phone company, but

this has become outdated as well.”

The North Aurora Police Department already uses the Nixle system to send messages to residents.

“It allows residents to opt in and update their own information when it changes,” Buziecki said. “They can also tailor the severity of messages they want to receive and the method by which they receive them.”

GENEVA – William N. “Bill” Strobel, 84, of Geneva, passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at Delnor Hospital in Geneva surrounded by family.

He was born Dec. 6, 1928, the son of Frank and Dorothy (Steffes) Strobel.

Bill was born and raised in Virgil, graduating from Maple Park High School with a graduating class of 26 students. He was an Army veteran, having proudly served his country in the Korean War. Bill married Norma Benson on Oct. 2, 1954, at St. Peter Church in Geneva. He was a bricklayer by trade and was a 35-year member of the Bricklayer’s Union. Bill loved sports and was an avid Chicago sports fan. As a resident of Geneva, Bill was very active with many Geneva sports teams, attending games both home and away. He was an election judge for many years. Bill

enjoyed vacationing in Door County. He will be greatly missed by all those whose lives he touched.

He is survived by his wife, Norma (Benson); children, David of Geneva, Michael of Geneva, Barbara (Jim) Cramer of North Aurora and Ann of Geneva; and siblings, Ed (Mae) of Lily Lake, Tom (Vera) of Wisconsin and Mary (Bob) Mezera of Iowa.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral prayers will be at 9 a.m.

Monday, July 22, at Malone Funeral Home, 324 E. State St., (Route 38), Geneva, proceeding to St. Peter Catholic Church, 1891 Kaneville Road, Geneva, for celebration of Mass at 10 a.m., with Father Bernard Schaefer celebrant.

Village Board backs destruction of guns

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – The Sugar Grove Village Board indicated this week that it doesn’t want to be in the business of selling guns.

“I think that’s a bad path to walk down,” Sugar Grove Trustee Rick Montalto said.

“The cons far outweigh the revenue.”

Police Chief Pat Rollins on Tuesday sought guidance about what his department should do with the approximately 20 firearms in its

property storage area.

He doesn’t know the history of the guns – he noted he began working for Sugar Grove this month – but said firearms typically come into police departments’ possession by court orders, in cases of suicide and when civilians no longer want them.

Some of the firearms have been in the village’s custody since the early 1990s, Rollins said.

He explained police usually wait to dispose of guns until they have enough to make it worthwhile.

Despite having several arguments against selling the firearms, he presented that option to the Village Board so trustees knew it could be a source of some revenue.

In a written report to the board, he said the firearms could generate up to $6,000, depending on their value, noting a few are operational and others have working parts.

President Sean Michels said it was the first time the board considered this topic since he has been in office.

He said it was an appro-

priate time to discuss the topic because the police department’s evidence room recently was cleaned and reorganized, and St. Charles recently acted on a similar request from its police chief.

“It was time,” Michels said, noting trustees supported destroying the firearms.

Montalto, a retired police officer, said the village needs to consider the feelings of those who turned in the guns and wanted them destroyed.

He asked how those people would feel about the village making money off the

weapons.

“There are plenty of legal guns out there to buy,” Montalto said. “I do not support [the village] selling them.”

Rollins said the firearms will be destroyed in the near future, likely by melting them at a foundry.

Unlike Sugar Grove, the St. Charles City Council voted last month to sell nearly 20 firearms to licensed dealers.

The majority of the weapons were acquired by such means as court orders, and four were weapons police no longer had use for.

Albright Theatre gets approval to sell alcohol

The Batavia City Council agreed Monday to let Albright Theatre Company, a nonprofit community theater group, sell beer and wine at its productions.

Albright Theatre, located on the third floor of the Batavia Government Center at 100 N. Island Ave. in downtown Batavia, also plans to offer dinner and theater packages.

The Albright Theatre will be added to a list of city properties where liquor could be sold or served with a license.

Albright Theatre is teaming with Aliano’s Ristorante in downtown Batavia.

Mario Aliano, who owns the restaurant with his brother, Phil Aliano, has said he will give a percentage of sales to Albright Theatre.

There will be signs posted stating that alcohol can’t leave the premises.

The license would be in effect only during Albright Theatre productions, Batavia City Administrator Bill McGrath said.

Albright Theatre plans to start selling beer and alcohol at its Sept. 6 performance.

BATAVIA – An independent film, “The Happy Poet,”

by Paul Gordon, who is formerly of Batavia, has been released on DVD, Netflix and Hulu and will be screened at the Gene Siskel Film Center at 8:15 p.m. Aug. 1.

Gordon, 39, who now lives in Los Angeles, said this is the first time the film will play in the Chicago area, although it has been screened and honored at several film festivals, including the 67th Venice International, the Tokyo International, and the South by Southwest conferences and festivals in Austin, Texas.

Gordon’s 85-minute film won the American Independents Award at the Philadelphia International Film Festival, the Audience Award at the Oldenburg International Film Festival, and the grand jury prize for Best Narrative Feature at the Florida Film Festival in Maitland, Fla.

“It started playing in festivals almost three years ago, and it was really well received,” Gordon said. “It ended up taking a while to get distribution. I’m excited it is finally available on Netflix and DVD.” The film, which Gordon calls in a subtitle, “An all organic, mostly vegetarian comedy,” is a story about Bill, a struggling poet who pours his heart, soul and last few dollars into starting a healthy food stand.

He surprises friends and customers with his dry wit and offbeat passion.

Motivated by help from a rag-tag group of supporters and a budding romance with a poetry-loving customer, Bill strives to make a difference in the world, until surprising complications jeopardize his new friendships and threaten his dream of a hot dog-free future.

BLOOMBERG NEWS The last time serious talk about exporting oil was heard in Washington, it was the 1970s, and with the Arab oil embargo a fresh memory and fears that domestic drilling had peaked, Congress instituted fuel-economy standards for cars, an energy-conservation program for consumer products and the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. It also banned all exports of U.S. oil except for small amounts to Canada.

Four decades later, that ban is threatening to put a damper on the shale-oil boom in the United States, and Congress or the president should find a way to reverse – or at least temporarily suspend – it.

Consider how drastically the U.S. oil picture has changed. Production has increased to 7.4 million barrels a day from 5 million in 2008, thanks to new methods of extracting oil from deep rock using horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.

At the same time, the U.S. has been consuming less gasoline, jet fuel and other oil products.

Here’s how the oil calculus has changed – light, high-quality oil is precisely the sort of oil that is being harvested via fracking in North Dakota and Texas. In fact, within a couple of years, U.S. production is expected to outstrip the domestic industry’s capacity to refine it.

Why? Many facilities on the U.S. Gulf Coast are configured to process heavy crude from Venezuela, Mexico and Canada. They could switch to refining light crude, but then they would not operate at full capacity. And it’s prohibitively expensive and difficult.

The point is, unless some of the shale oil is exported, it will be stranded, or simply left in the ground.

Under the restrictions passed in the 1970s, most U.S. crude can be exported only if the Commerce Department grants an export license based on a finding that it would be in the “national interest.”

Congress should invert this concept. Allow exports without licenses, except in times of shortages or other national emergencies.

If Congress seems inclined to sit on its hands, President Barack Obama would do well to look into the possibility of issuing a temporary blanket license, or licenses, to export oil to nations with which the U.S. has free-trade agreements – and maybe even to nations that agree to cooperate with trade sanctions against Iran. The Commerce Department would still be able to restrict exports in the event oil once again comes into short supply.

In a recent Kane County Chronicle opinion piece, Geneva Township Trustee Dick Sharp suggested seniors in a “precarious situation” contact Senior Services Associates Inc. for advice. No matter where they live, seniors at least 60 years old (as well as some younger and disabled clients) can make an appointment to meet with Betty Erickson on Wednesdays at the Geneva Senior Center in Wheeler Park.

Not so much in a “precarious situation,” Tia and I were merely confused. Medicare? Plan A, B, C, D, F, A.A.R.P.? Donut holes and Advantage Plans? Huh? That’s why we met with Betty.

However, before getting to Medicare questions, I asked about her organization.

“Senior Services Associates is a not-for-profit, which helps seniors live independently in their own homes as long as they’re safe,” she explained. “We help them understand and sign up for everything from Medicare to food stamps.”

Additionally, if a caregiver feels overwhelmed, Senior Services will conduct a comprehensive assessment to determine what’s needed. Often it will

Following this overview, Betty guided Tia and me through the labyrinthine issues of Medicare, giving us various options and strategies. We left feeling relieved and confident.

On our way out of the Senior Center, its gorgeous interior decorating reminiscent of a country club, we bumped into Mary Jane Potts, who used to babysit our son.

Sheri McMurray, the center’s director, is responsible for its newsletter, field trips, luncheons and many other services.

“We want people to come and have it feel like their living room,” Sheri said. “Those over there,” she indicated the foursome playing cards by a large picture window, “have a weekly game of poker going.”

“We only play for pennies,” one of the silver-haired gamblers assured me later on her way to lunch.

STABILIZING FORCE Connor reins himself in, wins St. Charles Junior title

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Playing the aggressor didn’t carry the results Ben Connor was looking for so he reverted to his usual, steadier brand of golf.

That recalibration did the trick for the 17-year-old St. Charles North senior as Connor prevailed Thursday in the 16 and 17 boys division of the St. Charles Junior Tournament at Pottawatomie Golf Course.

Connor reached a critical juncture after a disastrous triple bogey on the par-3 fourth hole had his comeback hopes flickering. That’s when Connor opted to tone down his brazen play, and his round

stabilized with three straight pars.

Connor said he’s a relatively cautious player by nature.

“That’s probably the way I prefer to play, but I figured since I was three off the lead to start with, going into the day, I thought the better strategy would be to try to make some birdies,” Connor said. “That ended up backfiring pretty heavily, so I then went back to my usual style of play.”

A birdie did come on No. 8, but it took a memorable chipin from a green-side sand trap about 30 yards out to make it happen.

“That was probably one of my top five golf moments, easy,” Connor said.

A fringe player on North’s varsity team in 2012, the much-improved Connor entered the eighth hole tied for the two-day tournament’s lead with fellow group member and North senior J.T. Grill, who might have had a better view of Connor’s chipin than he would have liked.

“I was standing on the back of the green so I saw the whole thing,” Grill said.

“I saw him [hit it] out of the sand, one bounce, ring around the cup and fall in. I was kind of amazed, kind of like ‘OK, I’ve got to step it up if I can here.’ ” But Grill bogeyed No. 8 to fall two strokes back, the same margin he and Kev-

Connor doesn’t expect to play collegiately, so he’s gearing up for his final year of team golf this fall. This week marked his first year playing the St. Charles Junior Tournament.

“Well, I tried to last year, but I missed the sign-up date,” Connor said. “Really [I entered] because my buddies have been doing it and I thought, ‘Might as well give it a go, play with some friends,’ and I love competitive golf.”

for a half-hour, and have to start back up all over again,” Boehmer said. “Doing it twice isn’t exactly fun, but you’ve got to manage.”

Boehmer (3-1) was on the mound again to start the top of the fourth when the home plate umpire spotted another lightning bolt in the distance, delaying the game for another 30 minutes.

If the delays perturbed Boehmer, he didn’t show it.

Although the Vikings put runners on base in every inning, Boehmer didn’t allow a run until the fifth.

Geneva’s only run was scored on a ground ball that might have been an inning-ending double play with a better throw from second.

Boehmer scattered seven hits over five innings. He struck out four and walked

none. He said his pitches were consistently finding the corners.

“Except I can’t get Ben Chally out,” he said, raising his voice so that the Geneva third baseman could hear him. “I throw a change-up six inches outside and [he] hit a triple down the line.”

No one has had much success getting Chally out lately.

He continued his recent torrid hitting with a double, a triple, and an RBI grounder to short.

Mick Vyzral worked the sixth and seventh for the Saints (19-12-1).

Asquini said he told his players after the game that they had just created history for St. Charles East.

“We’ve never gone to spring state and then summer state right after that,” he

explained. “It’s the first time ever. We’ve had some pretty good teams – some teams that got to this final game and couldn’t get it done.”

The Saints will play Monday at either North Central College in Naperville or Benedictine University in Lisle.

The Vikings ended the summer 14-12.

“Take today out of the equation, the last two weeks I think we played very good baseball,” Geneva coach Matt Hahn said. “We have five sophomores on the varsity team who were playing freshman baseball two months ago. I thought we improved immensely throughout the summer. I really like our prospects going forward. I think we’re going to surprise a lot of people in the spring.”

“It’s pretty nice,” said Furrie, younger sister of former North standout Ariana Furrie. “I never thought that I’d be able to beat all the boys, let alone the older ones, too.”

Furrie’s round started par-birdie-birdie-par and, despite a late-round minislump, she bettered her Wednesday round of 40 by two strokes Thursday. She bagged what would have been her second tournament title of the summer but a scorecard mistake cost her an Illinois Junior Golf Association champion-

Furrie said her incentive to play in the tournament was “mostly practice.”

“The North tryouts are going to be [at Pottawatomie], so it was mostly just practice for the future but I guess [winning] is pretty good,

too,” Furrie said.

Furrie shot 15 strokes better than the next best female entry, 15 to 17 division girls winner Jessica Grill (93).

Jessica Grill, J.T.’s twin sister, was unhappy with her 50 Thursday but said she couldn’t be too bummed, considering her first-place trophy.

Only four girls participated in the 15 to 17 bracket.

“It was shocking because the last couple of years, I’ve known a lot more people who have played,” Grill said. “It was just a little weird seeing such a small group and knowing that we would all be together both days and nothing would change.”

In the boys 14 and 15 division, St. Charles East sophomore Daniel Haugen broke free from a tie with Christopher Black after the first round for an age-group triumph. Haugen’s 87 was five strokes clear of Black and three ahead of runner-up Hank Zimmer.

Haugen said he’s successfully tweaked his mechanics since freshman year.

“I’ve fixed my swing so I’ve been hitting a lot straighter,” said Haugen, who aspires to be No. 1 on the Saints’ JV team this fall. “Fairways mean greens, and greens mean birdies and pars.”

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles East baseball team beat the heat, beat a pair of lightning delays, and beat Geneva soundly Thursday to advance to the Elite Eight of the Phil Lawler Classic.

The Saints scored nine runs in the first four innings and cruised to a 9-1 victory over the Vikings in a regional final at East.

Junior rightfielder Jake Rykoskey had three hits in as many trips to the plate for the Saints and drove in five runs.

The big blow was his threeRBI double to the right-center gap off Geneva starter Max Novak in the fourth inning.

“My buddy was pitching.

He’s on my travel team, so I know him pretty well. He

just gave me a good pitch to hit,” Rykoskey said. “It was a fastball. It was on the outside half. It was a good pitch.”

Erik Anderson, Jake Milosch, Adam Rojas, and Alex Abate also drove in runs.

“They’re really locked in. They’re having great approaches,” East coach Len Asquini said of his hitters.

“You don’t see us swinging too much out of the zone.

We’re getting good counts, working the counts.”

Geneva’s hitters, on the other hand, were largely stymied by Saints’ starter Mike Boehmer, who was warmed up and ready to throw his first pitch when the lightning warning siren at the football field went off, delaying the start of the game by 30 minutes.

“I have not seen it,” pro shop chief Ralph Drendel said. “It’ll be interesting to see what happens. Saturday it’s supped to break, so it could be OK.” Drendel said sales of July rounds are slightly ahead of those in July 2012 as the month reaches its final week-plus.

In addition, he said players in the course’s many afternoon leagues have rolled with the weather, as well.

“Those guys and gals get off work and drive down, play golf and have a cocktail or something,” he said, “so it’s also social.”

Niemiec to compete at Illinois Open

Dallas-based Eagle Golf has announced that 26 of its 31 public, private and municipal golf courses have extended a 2-for-1 women’s promotion through the rest of the season. Mill Creek Golf Club in Geneva is among the list that allows two women’s players to play for the cost of one round.

“Our company has a responsibility to help grow the game of golf, and we see this program as an important part of our efforts moving forward,” Eagle Golf CEO Joe Munsch said in a statement.

Yorkville’s Whitetail Ridge Golf Course and Fresh Meadow Golf Club in Hillside are the other participating Illinois courses. The deal initially encompassed the first two months of the season.

Eagle Golf also offers a Kids Play Free promotion in which children 15-and-younger can play alongside an adult at certain times.

St. Charles East product Chris Niemiec typically grabs an 8- or 9-iron when he’s about to address a shot 150 yards from the pin.

His math and muscle changed during last week’s trip to the Wyoming Open, where a sand wedge did the trick from that distance.

“With the altitude, it took awhile to adjust to that two-, three-, four-club difference, especially when the pins are tucked in difficult places,” Niemiec said. “I obviously enjoy playing out there, but you definitely need to be prepared for a different kind of golf.”

Niemiec welcomed elevation when he played recreationally as a student at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. He hopes to see more of it as an aspiring professional.

Until then, he’s out to make a bigger name for himself closer to home, beginning with next week’s Illinois Open at The Glen Club in Glenview.

Royal Hawk associate golf professional Brian Carroll and Royal Hawk/ Royal Fox director of golf and player development Brian Groszek received exemptions into the three-day, strokeplay event that begins Monday.

Outside of an Illinois PGA event at Ravinia Green in Riverwoods earlier this month, Carroll admits “I haven’t been playing much” because of his job description.

“As a golf pro, you don’t get to practice and play much,” Carroll said. “You’re doing a lot of running

the club, teaching lessons. Running the golf operation is the major part of my day.”

Carroll doesn’t fret considering his past open experience. He tied for 14th in last year’s tournament, shooting 2-under par at The Glen Club, a frequent recent host.

“It’s a longer, more open, kind of newer links-style course, but it’s always in good shape,” Carroll said. “It used to host a Web.com Tour event, so it’s a really good course.”

Niemiec noticed the same years ago, when he caddied for his father, Ed, in opens at The Glen Club.

These days, the roles are reversed, and Niemiec will happily have his father on his bag and at his side.

“The course is pretty favorable to me, and I’m looking forward to it,” said Niemiec, who tied for 25th at the Wyoming Open.

That tournament was held at Airport Golf Club in Cheyenne, a long way from home, and from sea level.

The loss left the Cougars 1-6 against Eastern Division competition in the second half with four games remaining.

A brief midafternoon

storm shifted batting practice away from the Fifth Third Bank Ballpark diamond and out to the cages beyond center field.

The weather made for slightly lower temperatures throughout the game, but conditions still were sticky and warmer than what fans have encountered through the season to date.

Great Lakes, which plays home games in Midland, Mich., is entering the warmest stretch of weather it has seen this season, too. Compared to the alternative, though, the Loons will take it.

“The ones that are here, they’re so glad to get the heat from being in Midland because it is freezing when the season opens,” manager Razor Shines said. “So the heat is a welcome relief. Obviously it’s hot, but if they had a choice, they’d prefer the heat.”

Not the Cougars, at least in the figurative sense. Entering Thursday 6½ games out of a second-half playoff spot – and nine games out of the second-half Western Division lead – was neither a desirable nor planned position.

“I think it’s just going to take one thing to click, just to get us on the right path,” Papaccio said. “I mean, we’re not waiting around for it. We’re trying to push for it, but I mean, I think it could happen any of these next days. I think we could get right on something.”

Turnstile report Thursday’s crowd of 6,349 pushed the Cougars’ season total to 237,602 fans in 37 home games. Kane County attracted 212,678 fans through the same span last season.

On Saturday, the Cougars expect to become the first Class-A club to attract 10 million fans. The Cougars relocated from Wausau, Wis., to Geneva before the 1991 season.

“They’ve been a success there for many, many, many years, from the day they’ve got there,” Midwest League president George Spelius told the Chronicle this week. “And they’ve done well for themselves.

“Going through the economy when it busted up there not to many years ago, it would take quite a few clubs to get back to the numbers they were getting.”

Post 342 baseball staves off elimination WHEATON – A nine-run seventh inning catapulted the St. Charles American Legion Post 342 baseball team to a 12-1, run-rule victory against Plainfield in a District 11 tournament elimination game Thursday.

St. Charles (23-9) led Plainfield (6-13) for most of the game before putting away a team that dressed only nine players.

Post 342 will play either Wheaton or Elgin at 7 p.m. today in Carol Stream.

“One guy starts off the inning aggressive and the other guys follow,” St. Charles’ Ryan Thomas said. “We go up there and take our hacks.

“Our coaches told us they didn’t really have any pitchers.

They were just tossing kids up there. So we just needed to be patient, see a pitch and put a good swing on it.”

Mitch Hurst’s run-scoring double in the second inning and Jack Dennis’ RBI single in the third were the key early hits for St. Charles.

A Thomas double that plated Tim Misner made it a 3-1 Post 342 lead in the fifth inning.

Thomas was 2 for 3 with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI. Hurst was 2 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs.

GENEVA – Cougars players tread carefully when it comes to the “almost” factor.

To grow too reliant on something that borders on an excuse isn’t what they’re after.

The thing is, they can’t help holding onto it during a second half that’s left them tasting the brink when their record suggests otherwise.

“I think from a player’s standpoint, we feel like we’re just on the cusp of getting bigtime hits, making bigtime plays,” shortstop Giuseppe Papaccio said Gioskar Amaya before Thursday’s 3-2 loss to Great Lakes. “We’ve been getting out and doing all our early work and we look great in practice and great in all the other stuff. I think it’s just going to take one thing to click, just to get us on the right path.”

It was clear where the Cougars needed to deliver Thursday.

With the bases loaded and one out and the Cougars trailing by the final margin in the sixth, catcher Willson Contreras and designated hitter Marco Hernandez struck out in successive atbats.

Chargers welcome accomplished coach

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com Deep-rooted community and family ties helped Aurora Central Catholic lure a hall-offame softball coach.

ACC athletic director Sean Bieterman announced Thursday that longtime former York coach Tom Babyar will be the Chargers’ new softball coach.

Babyar, an Illinois Softball Coaches Association Hall of Fame member, won more than 600 games as York’s coach between 1979 through 2011.

Bieterman was a York student during Babyar’s lengthy tenure there and their families are closely acquainted. “I’ve known the [Bieterman] family for years and he knew I was not coaching,�

Babyar said. “I’ve been at clinics with Sean where I’m coaching softball and he’s doing baseball. I was at his wedding when he got married, I was invited by his parents. ‌ He knew I wasn’t coaching so he seeked me out. I gave it some thought because I drove out there and saw it was a 35, 40 minute drive every day, pay tolls and all that, but I’m going into it for the love of the game, not to make any money, I’ll tell you that.â€?

Babyar coached York to a downstate berth in 2003 and presided over the York team that stunned St. Charles North in the 2010 regionals, one year before virtually the same group of North Stars finished as Class 4A state runnersup.

Babyar said he plans to show up at ACC events during the fall and winter but there’s not much time left this summer to work with the team.

The Chargers are coming off a surprising Class 2A supersectional berth under former coach Jim Hallahan, a Geneva resident who was not retained. “The hardest part will be the calendar is kind of running out in terms of what you can do,� Bieterman said. “It will be hard initially to get quick evaluations, but the nice thing is he has a real nice core of players coming back.�

Despite Babyar’s longevity and success at York, he left with some hard feelings after being dismissed after the 2011 season. He said changing times have made things hard on coaches, citing excessive parent involvement. “It’s just not a good situation,� Babyar said. “Parents who complain, it bodes negative for the program. Somehow it infiltrates, and it’s just not good.�

Babyar served as an assistant women’s bowling coach at Elmhurst College since leaving York.

Bieterman said he has been delighted to see ACC make “a pretty good splash in the last month here,� referencing the hirings of former Rosary coach Kristy Kane (girls soccer), Babyar and new ACC football defensive coordinator John Belskis, former coach at Downers Grove South.

ST. CHARLES – On July 29, the St. Charles Mothers’ Club will present monetary awards from proceeds received from the 2012-13 fundraising year to local nonprofit organizations.

Awards will be given out beginning at 7 p.m. at the St. Charles Public Library in St. Charles Recipients include the Community Crisis Center, to support a domestic violence support group; Royal Family Kids’ Camp of Kane County, to support a camper; TriCity Family Services, for a support group at Lazarus House; and Embrace a Family, to provide general assistance to local families in need.

Additional awards were previously presented in the form of three scholarships given to local women who are in need of financial assistance to return to school. One woman is attending Waubonsee Community College and two others are attending Aurora University.

The Mothers’ Club has many events throughout the year to raise money to assist local families in need.

The St. Charles Mothers’ Club welcomes new members at any time. The club meets on the third Monday of every month beginning Sept. 16 at 7 p.m.

Local author of ‘The Killing Birds’ makes hometown proud It has been a wonderful week for the Bennett family. You may know them.

There’s Lisa, the matriarch, who has been a longtime area resident, active in community affairs, consulting in business development and on staff at the library. There are three daughters – Laura, Amanda and Kate – and one son – Richard.

The excitement centers around Rich and baseball.

Recently, People magazine and the Major League Baseball organization launched a joint effort to recognize and honor servicemen – called “Heroes” – through a competition where one representative for each Major League team is selected. Richard’s sister Laura nominated him and organized a campaign.

Richard Bennett has been selected to represent the Chicago Cubs and was introduced at their home game last Friday. On Tuesday night, he was part of the pre-game activities at the MLB All-Star Game.

There’s more. Rich graduated from St. Charles High School in 2000 – the last class from the one single high school.

JOAN KNOWS Joan Arteberry Some may recall his involvement with athletics and the distinction of being among the first male cheerleaders. The Cubs were always his dream team and he reports attending 300 or so games at Wrigley Field, mostly in the left field bleachers.

He started college but interrupted his studies to join the U.S. Army. He was assigned to the 101st Airborne and was deployed to Afghanistan.

Last year, his book, a collection of blogs titled “The Killing Birds,” came out.

My appreciation for the book came from the candor, humor and insights, heavy combat and close fellowship.

As reported in his nomination, Richard Bennett was awarded the Silver Star for his action to move under heavy

fire to shield a wounded comrade.

Rich called me on Wednesday, as did Lisa and Laura, to share some highlights. Rich reported he was standing at Times Square, still the recipient of MLB hospitality. He and his wife, Heather, were seated at the All-Star Game in one of the luxury suites from which Heather had a great view of the on-field presentation – VIP treatment in every way included.

“The effort of MLB was amazing!” he said, and cited a special tour of the 9/11 site, a salute from NYPD and housing at the same hotel with the All Stars.

He was thrilled to meet the other “heroes,” such as a Navajo code talker who was at Iwo Jima when the American flag was so memorably raised.

Rich is now living in DeKalb where he attends Northern Illinois University, majoring – as did Laura – in communications.

There was too much traffic uproar for us to keep talking on the phone, yet I wanted to share with him my own Wrigley Field delights.

While a professor in the communi-

cations department at Aurora, I taught a course in sports information. Hoping to establish credibility, I frequently mentioned being there for a no hitter (Lindy McDaniel); the Willie Smith walk-off homer on opening day; the first ever night game; and the sweet memories of seeing Ernie Banks, Hank Sauer, Bobby Rush and the visiting Jackie Robinson, Stan Musial and Willie Mays.

One can only imagine the thrill of standing on the infield grass, alongside the team, as Wayne Messmer sings the national anthem.

Let’s just be proud that the soldier standing there was our hometown guy – and remember him and all the heroes today, who serve and protect.

Hats off to Rich! Go Cubs! Saints go marching in!

Local resident becomes collegiate scholar Thomas Andrew Doyle of St. Charles and a student at the University of Arizona in Tuscon, Ariz., recently accepted membership in The National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is an interdisciplinary honors organization for first- and second-year college students.

Membership is by invitation only, based on grade-point

average and class standing.

Doyle also was recognized for making the University of Arizona’s Fall 2012 Dean’s List with a 4.0 grade-point average.

Doyle is the son of Ruth and the late Patrick Doyle of St. Charles.

He will be a sophomore at the University of Arizona in the fall.

He is a 2012 graduate of St. Charles East High School in St. Charles.

Cadillac competes in compact sports car market One of the lightest cars (3,373 pounds) in its compact sports car segment of the automotive market, Cadillac’s ATS has caught on with the buying public.

By the end of June, sales of the rear- or all-wheel-drive compact sports sedan hit 19,183. It is the favorite of Cadillac car buyers, outselling the CTS (15,133) and the XTS (14,684) during that same sixmonth time period.

With the Audi A4 and the BMW 3 Series as prime competitors, the ATS might be more beguiling in that it is a domestic General Motors product assembled in Lansing.

Prices start at $33,095 for a base 2.5-liter model and rise to almost $45,000 for a 3.6-liter ATS. In between are the RWD and AWD 2-liter turbo models at $34,900 and $36,900, respectively. The 2.5- and 2-liter engines have four cylinders. The 3.6 engine is a V6. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard. There is the choice of a six-speed manual with the turbo four-cylinder.

No matter the model, amenities abound and, for starters, include leather trim, power controls, heated front seats and a Bose sound system.

Standard fare also begins with power and heated exterior mirrors, four power windows (express up and down in front), keyless entry and pushbutton start, eight airbags, satellite radio, automatic headlamps, aluminum wheels for performance 17-inch tires and on and on it goes. It had the power seats in front, of course, but had a 12-way adjustment for the driver and 10-way for the passenger.

Cadillac’s luxury four-door, five-passenger, rear- or all-wheel-drive 2013 compact ATS sedan is powered by a 272-horsepower, 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed shiftable transmission.

BEHIND THE WHEEL Jerry Kuyper were magnesium; the gas and brake pedals were metal alloy; and the windshield wipers began operating after sensing moisture.

The ATS is light on its feet and seemingly rides on air. The ride was tested on possibly the worst two-mile stretch of pavement in the Chicago area. The pavement is pockmarked with shallow and deep holes, grooved at various stretches and treacherous in the extreme. At a legal speed of 50 miles per hour, the ATS simply glided over the imperfections.

The electronic suspension is strut double-pivot in front with direct-acting stabilizer

bar and Cadillac’s first fivelink rear suspension, also with the stabilizer bar.

The ATS is agile as it curls through U-turns on a dime.

Officially the complete turning circle is 36.4 feet.

Heavily insulated, driver and passengers can carry on conversations in a normal tone of voice.

The gasoline engine can cause this 3,543-pound car to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in an unofficial 6.7 seconds. The V6 has been tested by automotive media in 5.7 seconds. These times are typical of compact, five-passenger, four-door sport sedans including the BMW 3-Series, Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Infiniti G. The turbo should have unleaded premium fuel pumped into the 16-gallon tank. During the test week, the turbo ATS

averaged 24.5 miles per gallon of fuel usage. The Environmental Protection Agency rates the turbo at 21 mpg city and 31 highway. Seventy percent of the driving was done on four-lane roads or interstates.

Braking to 0 from 60 mph has been done in a distance of 108 feet by members of the automotive media. That is exceptional braking performance where 120 feet is considered excellent.

The touch-screen (eightinch color) climate and sound system is a bit touchy and annoying. Station and volume controls, for example, are in the shape of a V, duplicating the outside shape of the front of the car.

These flattened V controls were difficult to use and the response was not always forthcoming. Perhaps Cadillac can return to something as

simple as a knob to control the volume in future ATS models.

This new information and entertainment system is called CUE which means Cadillac user experience.

Cadillac offers 10 exterior colors, including variants of black, blue and silver, plus red, white, gray and gold. On the interior, the leather is either caramel or tan and black.

Since it is a compact, rear leg room is compressed and the trunk has only 10.2 cubic feet of storage space, but there is a pass-through into the rear seat for carrying longer items.

The ATS is covered by Cadillac’s four-year or 50,000-mile warranty with no deductible and free scheduled maintenance sessions, and six years or 70,000-mile transferable powertrain warranty as well as roadside assistance.

Cadillac now has an entry in the emerging luxury compact sport sedan market.

Cadillac’s mid-sized CTS is priced from $39,000 to almost $65,000 for a sedan (CTS also is a coupe and wagon). The XTS, new this year like the ATS, is a full-sized sedan and pricing is from $44,075 to $64,360.

Cadillac’s recent sales increase of 38 percent compared to a year earlier was the luxury brand’s largest jump since 1976. Chicago and the suburban area may be a key reason why the 110-year old brand is the fastest growing major automotive brand in the U.S. “Chicago has always been a loyal Cadillac market, but the real growth is being driven by consumers who are new to the brand,” said Chase Hawkins, vice president of Cadillac sales and service. “About two out of three Cadillac buyers are coming to the brand for the first time. That indicates a change in luxury consumer sentiment, and a strong response to the dramatic design and performance of the new Cadillac products.”

‘Red 2’ isn’t perfect, but it’s fun

Now, those are four words you don’t usually see strung together in a movie review.

But they perfectly describe “Red 2.” It’s a cracking good sequel to the 2010 action comedy about former government agents who are now “RED,” or “retired, extremely dangerous.” And it does exactly what a film like this is supposed to do.

It picks up, at some indeterminate time after the original, and follows the continuing adventures of a group of people we really liked the first time around.

They’re pushed off into a new story, but the script switches into comfort mode by getting them to do some of the same quirky things they did before. Yet there’s enough freshness here to make us hope there’ll be a third entry somewhere down the road.

But back to that cute and violent business, which is introduced, in tandem, at the get-go. Say hello, again, to tough-as-nails Frank and innocent little Sarah (Bruce Willis and Mary-Louise Parker), now a lovey-dovey couple who have become real homebodies. Well, at least he has. Frank is thrilled to have his killing days behind him. But Sarah might be missing some of that excitement she tasted when she first met Frank.

Before the film has a chance of turning saccharine, it reintroduces Marvin (John Malkovich), Frank’s crazy coot of an old pal, who is a brilliant marksman but is still feeling the effects of some long-ago and extensive government-sponsored LSD experiments done to him.

Say hello, again, to tough-as-nails Frank and innocent little Sarah (Bruce Willis and Mary-Louise Parker), now a lovey-dovey couple who have become real homebodies in “Red 2.” the gunfire, then introduce a plot that makes the government look even worse when our heroes are labeled terrorists who must be hunted down. But don’t let the audience forget, even when gun-crazy Brit MI6 agent Victoria (Helen Mirren) and treacherous Korean hitman Han (Byung-hun Lee, new to the franchise) are hired to do the hunting, that throughout it all, Frank and Sarah are crazy over each other. This is put to the test a bit when Katja (Catherine Zeta-Jones), a Russian agent and old flame of Frank’s, enters the picture. But that character, along with Zeta-Jones’ flat acting, takes up too much air and space in what would otherwise have been a tighter movie.

The film is actually a little more complicated than it needs to be. The

central premise involves a decades-old weapon that at one time could have done major damage to the world and, it turns out, still can.

Dubbed Project Nightshade, and created by a genius who was either good or evil, the weapon has gone missing, and a whole lot of people, from all different corners of the planet, are searching for it.

In a film of this sort, that kind of plotting also means that everyone is trying to kill everyone else, with Frank, Sarah, and Marvin most often in others’ crosshairs. But the script never strays far from leaning on its comic edge. Despite the danger, there are plenty of wisecracks, along with some outright loopy comedy from the often confused-looking Marvin. While he remains the film’s major comic

relief, Parker is spot-on in lightening things up just by displaying her misplaced excitement and zeal when, for instance, she gets her hands on a gun and doesn’t really know what to do with it.

Any fashionistas in the audience will enjoy the fact that practically everyone in the film (with the exception of Marvin) is stylishly dressed, and fans of actors who know how to overdo things in exactly the right way will enjoy the spirited, highly energetic performance by Anthony Hopkins as Bailey (especially when he utters the oh-so-British phrase “Jolly good” twice!).

There are plot twists galore, many of which get very creative late in the film, and though the story gets overcomplicated, the direction is so fluid, it’s quite easy to take it all in.

Hearing your heartbeat not your imagination Dear Doctor K: I can hear my heartbeat in my left ear. Should I be worried that I might lose my hearing?

Dear Reader: A few years ago a patient of mine asked me the same question. What he was worried about was not that he might have an ear condition that could take away his hearing – he was worried that he might be going crazy!

I told him that if all he heard was his heart, he wasn’t crazy.

On the other hand, if he heard the voice of Abraham Lincoln whispering in his ear, he might have something to worry about.

A condition called tinnitus causes unusual sounds in the ears: high-pitched hisses, lowerpitched buzzing sounds, clicking.

This is a remarkably common problem; an estimated 50 million people in the United States have it to some degree.

I consulted with my colleague Dr. David Vernick, assistant clinical professor of otology and laryngology at Harvard Medical School. We agreed that what you describe sounds like what’s called “pulsatile tinnitus.” This is a rhythmic thumping or whooshing only you can hear, often in time with your heartbeat.

The most common causes of

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff pulsatile tinnitus include: • Conductive hearing loss. This type of hearing loss intensifies internal head noises – sounds such as breathing, chewing, and blood flowing through the ear.

Conductive hearing loss makes it easier to hear blood flowing through two large blood vessels that travel near to each ear. These are the carotid artery and the jugular vein, which circulate blood to and from the brain. (I’ve put an illustration of these blood vessels, and where they sit in relation to your middle and inner ear, on my website, AskDoctorK. com.)

• Carotid artery disease. The accumulation of fatty buildup (plaque) inside the carotid arteries can create turbulent blood flow. This can cause a pulsating sound.

• High blood pressure. When blood pressure is high, blood flow through the carotid artery is more likely to be turbulent. That turbulence generates the pulsatile tinnitus.

• Blood vessel disorders. Many

blood vessel disorders can cause pulsatile tinnitus. These include an abnormal connection between an artery and vein, twisted arteries, or a benign blood vessel tumor behind the eardrum.

• Ear muscle disorders.

Tiny little muscles that attach to the bones inside the ear can sometimes go into spasms, and this can cause pulsatile tinnitus.

Most of the time, pulsatile tinnitus is nothing to worry about. If it doesn’t go away on its own or becomes really bothersome, talk to your doctor.

Your doctor will likely examine your ears and listen to the blood flow through the arteries in your neck. He or she will listen for an unusual sound that blood makes when it rushes past an obstruction.

If your doctor hears this sound, you’ll likely need a test to look for a narrowing or malformation in your carotid artery – and possibly surgery to correct the problem.

Otherwise, you may need a hearing test or other additional testing.

Dr. Wallace: I enjoy sleeping with my bedroom window open even in the dead of winter. My grandmother, who recently moved in with us, says that sleeping with an open window when the temperature is low will cause a person to get a lot of unwanted colds.

I’ve been sleeping with an open window for a long time, and I do not get a lot of colds. Please tell Grandmother you can’t catch cold from sleeping in a cool room. – Sheila, Lansing, Mich.

Dear Grandmother: Sheila is correct! Many people think that colds are caused by cold or damp weather, but in reality, colds are usually spread by simple hand-to-hand contact with another human being or such objects as doorknobs and public telephones.

A Mayo Clinic Health Letter states that people with colds often touch their noses, contaminate their hands and unknowingly pass the cold germs to others.

Dr. Wallace: I’m writing in response to the teen who was upset that her parents wouldn’t allow the maid to clean her room. She was mad because her parents didn’t take into consideration her busy schedule of study and after-school activities.

Poor baby! I want to thank you for telling her to take responsibility and clean her own room. This teen is not the only one who has a busy schedule. I’m a freshman in high school and have a higher-than 4.0 grade-point average.

I’m in student government, play in the pep band every Tuesday and Thursday and stay at school for the game afterward. I’m in a fall and spring sport, teach Sunday school, attend a church youth group, and I’m on several

Here are the facts: Alcohol is water-soluble and cannot be absorbed in fat. Women have more body fat than men do, so their bodies are less able to dilute the alcohol they drink.

Thus, if a male and a female of equal weight consume an equal amount of alcohol, the female will become tipsy first. This is how it is.

Bridge players who do not think lose a lot of contracts unnecessarily. Bridge players who think but do not wonder about what might go wrong will also lose some contracts.

In today’s deal, South is in six spades. How should he play after West leads the heart queen around to declarer’s ace? Would South’s best play be different if dummy had only K-5-4 of spades?

I strongly approve of North’s three-club positive response, showing eight-plus points and five or more clubs. (When responder, holding a strong hand, begins with two diamonds waiting, he either never shows his full strength or is forced to take control.) On the third round, after North raised spades, South used the Grand Slam Force, asking partner to bid seven with two of the top three spade honors. (Nowadays, this convention has almost died out because Roman Key-Card Blackwood uncovers the top trump honors.)

South can afford only one trump loser. If the spades are 3-2, there are no problems. He needs to worry about 4-1 and 5-0.

The correct play is a low spade to dummy’s eight. When it loses, South wins the next trick and leads a spade to the king, here getting home. He will be successful more than 94 percent of the time.

If dummy has only K-5-4, South should start with dummy’s king, then play low to his 10. His chance has shrunk a tad, to nearly 90 percent.
