Pols: Quinn veto a political stunt Local officials predict an override of governor’s changes to concealed-carry bill By KEVIN P. CRAVER kcraver@shawmedia.com

McHenry County’s representatives in Springfield anticipate that lawmakers will override Gov. Pat Quinn’s changes to their compromise concealedcarry bill. Leaders of the House and Senate will call members back into

session Tuesday to consider the changes and likely vote on an override. Tuesday also happens to be the court-mandated deadline for lawmakers to legalize concealed carry before the state’s longtime ban is invalidated. Without any rules in place by Tuesday, Illinois would have no laws governing the carrying of concealed weapons.

Local lawmakers joined others statewide, including many in Quinn’s own majority party, in criticizing Quinn’s changes to the hard-fought compromise legislation, which passed the House and Senate with the three-fifths majorities needed to override his amendatory veto. “It’s unfortunate that it’s coming down to the wire, and it’s go-

ing to cost taxpayers for another special session,” said state Rep. Mike Tryon, R-Crystal Lake. Quinn on Tuesday significantly altered what he called a “flawed bill that jeopardizes public safety.” He limited the number of concealed weapons a person can carry at any given time to one, and limited that gun to one 10-round magazine. Suspect wanted in CL stabbing Two victims suffer multiple wounds

cmcdougall@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – Both Johnsburg residents who had laid claim to $150,000 found in a vegetable garden have died – one just 10 days before a judge could decide to whom the money should be awarded. Wayne Sabaj found the money in August 2011 in his garden after gathering some vegetables for dinner. He died Monday, his attorney, Robert Burke confirmed. Sabaj’s neighbor, Dolores Johnson, who also claimed to be the owner of the money, died in January. A Naperville liquor store owner also claimed the money. An attorney for Nazco Enterprises, which owns Extra Value Liquors in Naperville, filed documents saying a masked gunman robbed the company’s president on Sept. 13, 2010, in the parking lot of Pebblewood Plaza, taking about $150,000 in bundles of mostly $20 and $50 bills. Burke said he is confident the liquor store will withdraw its petition, but it has not done so. Under the law, finder becomes keeper if the owner doesn’t come forward one year

RYSTAL LAKE – Columbia College of Missouri-Crystal Lake campus director Debra Hartman was looking at the campus’s graduate roster with Karen Beckstrom, Elgin’s campus director, when she saw two people with the same last name. “Are they brother and sister?” Hartman asked about Steve and Kristina Hermansson. “No, they’re husband and wife,” Beckstrom answered. “Isn’t that neat? We have a couple graduating here, too.” Steve and Kristina Hermansson of Woodstock and Marta and Brent Dolan of Bartlett will be graduating with master’s degrees by the end of

business administration. Marta and Brent Dolan will both earn MBAs. Hartman said in her experience, it’s unusual for couples to complete master’s degrees at the same time. In fact, this is a first for Hartman. One spouse usually completes the program before the other spouse begins due to job and family obligations. “It’s an interesting kind of trend for us to watch,” Hartman said. Each spouse had his or her own reasoning for going back to school. Marta Dolan wasn’t happy with her options in psychology, and she followed her husband back to school when he wanted to remain competitive in the business world. Kristina Hermansson wanted to

NO BUILDING PERMIT FEES FOR FLOOD FIXES

FERGUSON EARNS FIRST MCJGA WIN

Cary residents and businesses who had building damage from last week’s storm and flood can get their building permit fees waived by the village. Trustees voted Tuesday to waive the fees to expedite the repair process. The village received reports that 37 houses and eight business sustained damages from the storm.

After shooting a 40 through the first nine holes of the McHenry County Junior Golf Association’s Marengo Ridge Open, Woodstock’s Alex Ferguson found a groove on the back nine and birdied four holes in a row. He shot a 3-under 33 on the back nine for a winning score of 73. Huntley’s Brad Spoeth took second.
