Activists laud decision on gay marriage Part of federal law struck down By CHELSEA McDOUGALL cmcdougall@shawmedia.com It took Toni Weaver all morning to stop crying – though hers were tears of joy. Early Wednesday, a close friend called to tell her the news she’d been waiting years to hear – the Supreme Court handed gay-rights advocates a major victory. In a 5-4 ruling, justices struck down a provision of a federal law denying benefits to married gay couples and cleared the way for the resumption of same-sex marriage in California. “When I got the news, and any time I tried to talk about it, I burst into tears. I’m so thrilled, overjoyed,” Weaver said. “When the highest court in our land rules in favor of equality, this is a momentous day.”

Union Pacific workers survey the damage after flooding Wednesday washed away a portion of the roadbed along the McHenry branch line along Bay Road north of Pleasant Hill Road. Metra closed the McHenry branch, which operates between McHenry and Crystal Lake, because of the damage, Metra spokesman Michael Gillis said. The line was not open for the Wednesday evening rush.
Homes damaged, roads closed after heavy rainfall By JOSEPH BUSTOS and JIM DALLKE editorial@shawmedia.com The house on Sunset Drive in Cary was the first one Nathan Hughes and Vanessa Barrie bought together. They had no idea that less than five weeks after they moved in, the lower level of their home would be filled with 4 feet of water. “We lost everything,” Hughes said. “We just bought the house. It was completely revamped. New carpet. New paint. New everything. We just bought the washer and dryer.”

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois taxpayers will pony up at least $130 million extra in interest payments for a bond sale this week due to lowered credit ratings because lawmakers have failed to solve the state’s $97 billion pension crisis. Two weeks after two credit-rating agencies downgraded the state’s rating to an all-time low, the state sold $1.3 billion in bonds Wednesday to pay for capital projects around the state. Among them are an upgrade of Chicago’s elevated rail system, improvements to highways and university campuses and the purchase

DISTRICT 46
CLOSED-DOOR TALKS IN QUESTION The District 46 school board went too far in what it discussed behind closed doors, an open government attorney said. The board met nine times behind closed doors from Nov. 13 through April 23 as it dealt with a one-day teachers strike, a contentious April election and the exodus of district staff.
