Camps at Garfield Farm Museum near Geneva WHAT: Youth ages 8 to 15 years old will have a chance to discover what life was like in the 1840s at Garfield Farm Museum. There will be two three-day camps. Closer than ever

Recovering from car accident, dad treasures time with family

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – When a car accident left Eric Bettag physically disabled six years ago, it didn’t seem like any good could come of the situation.

After years of rehabilitation and therapy have helped him get back on his feet, he said he realized that the accident brought him closer to his family, which includes his wife, Joan, and his five children, Elizabeth, 18; Sarah, 16; Alice, 15; Isabel, 13; and Benjamin, 10 – something to celebrate for Father’s Day, which is Sunday.

In March of 2007, Eric Bettag of Maple Park was heading east on Dean Street across Randall Road in St. Charles when his car was struck by a vehicle driven by a teenager who ran a red light. His car rolled over and over again before coming to a stop near a construction vehicle. As Eric Bettag made an attempt to escape through the sun roof, he realized he couldn’t move.

“I knew it was bad news at that point in time,” he said.

He was taken by helicopter to a hospital, where doctors stabilized his broken neck with screws and plates.

Because of his injuries, Eric couldn’t move any ligaments below his chest. Doctors told his wife, Joan Bettag, that her husband would likely become an invalid.

After three days of intensive care, Eric Bettag was able to transfer to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, where he started his monthslong effort to regain mobility.

He’s come a long way in the last six years.

When the accident happened, the youngest of their five children was 3 and the oldest was in sixth grade.

“Everyone said they didn’t think any good would come out of it, but there has been some good,” he said. “I think everything happens for a reason. At the time, I was so transfixed on the office. I needed to be shaken up.”

He said in the three hours he spends walking with them each day, he’s learned a lot more about each of his children than he ever would have if he still was working long hours, like he was before the accident.

His oldest, Elizabeth, is getting ready to head to college after this summer, which means it’s not long before Sarah leaves, followed by Alice.

He said he learned that Elizabeth is fun and social; Sarah is studious and booksmart; Alice is intelligent and organized; Isabel is very athletic; and because Benjamin is the only other male in the household, the two “cling to each other.”

“I didn’t know any of that before. My job was to provide, and I just didn’t have time for a lot of other things,” he said. “I would have missed the whole thing. They would have been gone [to college].”

He said it was difficult to see his children while he was unable to move.

“That was probably the hardest thing for me in the beginning,” he said. “They had seen me my whole life a certain way, and all of a sudden you’re like this blob.”

Despite grim predictions from doctors, Eric Bettag said

he was determined to walk again.

He started by making his way down his driveway, which is at the end of a dead-end road in Maple Park. Eventually he was able to walk the length of his street.

Now, he walks two to three miles every day, and his children regularly accompany him on his walks up and down their street.

He said that’s where he saw the good that came out of the whole ordeal.

8LOCAL BRIEFS Aurora league to host monthly dinner Tuesday MONTGOMERY – The Aurora Council of the Navy League will host its monthly dinner at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday in the private room on the east end of Grandma’s Table Restaurant, 1700 Douglas Road, Montgomery.

Ten years after divorce, father reflects on family

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com SOUTH ELGIN – Bill Ginther of South Elgin has spent the past 10 years helping to raise his three children while sharing custody with his exwife.

The two parents are very involved in the lives of their children, Clay, 21; Brad, 18; and Abi, 16. Because they both share the same beliefs when it comes to raising children, Ginther said he likes to think that his relationship with his children is no different than when he and his ex-wife still were married.

“I had some great advice from a friend who said you have to base your decisions on what’s best for the kids and the rest falls in line,” he said.

As a divorced dad, Ginther shares his perspective with about 15,000 fathers in Kane County, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.

Ginther spends seven out of every 14 days with his children doing things dads typi-

cally do. While his oldest son, Clay, was growing up, Ginther said he chaperoned school trips, watched Clay perform in school choirs and is now watching his son adjust to the working world.

His middle child, Brad, was a longtime Boy Scout who recently earned Eagle Scout rank. Ginther Bill Ginther has accompanied his son on camping and hiking trips, as well as a 60-mile canoe trip through Canada.

Ginther spends time with his youngest, Abi, watching her play softball with a traveling team, which brings the team to places such as Iowa, Missouri and Colorado.

He said it was difficult at first to split his time with his kids, but after a decade, it has become the norm.

“It gives you time to focus on the kids when they’re with you, and when they’re not with you, you can get caught

up on other stuff,” he said.

Ginther said knowing that he has his kids part-time makes him more conscious about spending quality time with them.

Although he doesn’t consider himself a single father, he still has to run a household alone.

“What overwhelmed me in the beginning, and still does today, is not so much centered on parenting,” he said.

“If I don’t clean up the house, I know nobody else will. If I don’t get groceries, I know nobody else will.”

He said one thing that has gotten easier now that his children are driving is that he doesn’t have to be in three places at once anymore.

Although he said he was fortunate not to deal with custody issues, Ginther said it seems the court system has come a long way in the last 10 years when it comes to fathers’ parenting rights.

“I would like to hope that courts have seen fathers as an equal parent,” he said.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE BATAVIA – The move of a 50-foot-wide, circular electromagnet from New York to Fermilab, which was set to begin Sunday, has been delayed a week because of inclement weather.

Fermilab spokesman Andre Salles said plans are now for the move to start June 22.

“The reason for the delay is to protect the safety of the crews prepping the ring for transport,” Salles said. “The storms will not damage the magnet, but high winds and

SUGAR GROVE – EB, the kitten that hitchhiked nearly 300 miles to Sugar Grove by clinging to a semitrailer’s air cleaner late last month, has been adopted from Kane County Animal Control.

Robert Sauceda, billing manager for Kane County Animal Control, said the 14- to 16-week-old kitten was adopted earlier this week after media outlets reported the story of her journey from Tomah, Wis., to Sugar Grove.

She was found under the semitrailer’s hood by Sugar Grove police officer Kevin Forest on May 25, who had pulled the driver over for talking on a cellphone while in a construction zone.

Forest heard the kitten meowing and found her with all four paws clinging to the air cleaner. She was named EB, which is short for Engine Block.

Died: June 13, 2013; in Batavia BATAVIA – Helen Jane Snyder, 71, of Batavia, passed away Thursday, June 13, 2013, at Michaelsen Health Center in Batavia. She was born Feb. 2, 1942, in Battle Creek, Mich., the daughter of Robert and Agnes (nee Byrne) Cull. She was united in marriage to Regis Snyder on June 26, 1965, in Battle Creek.

Mrs. Snyder was a longtime and passionate educator in Batavia.

Helen’s children and family always came first although she still managed to substitute teach in Batavia while raising her children.

Helen’s love for education gave her a wonderful career at Montessori in Batavia for 27 years. She also taught religious education at Blessed Sacrament in North

Aurora for many years. Helen, who claimed to not be musically talented, managed to direct the Blessed Sacrament Choir to a wonderful melody.

In her spare time, Helen’s secondary love was her seamstress talents. She will be remembered for her many baptismal garments and alterations she had done for so many people. She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, Marywood Juniors Home Extension Club and Panhellenic Association. Helen leaves a legacy of well-educated and successful students contributing our world in many wonderful ways.

She is survived by her husband, Regis; three children, Jennifer (Randy) Johnson of Geneva, Connie (Jeff) Gorden of Ingleside and Matt (Lori) Snyder of Crystal Lake; five grandchildren, Brandon, Brittany and Andrew Johnson and

Jack and Joey Gorden; and a sister, Norma Landstra of Battle Creek.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, at Moss Family Funeral Home, 209 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia. A rosary service will be said at 3:45 p.m.

Funeral services will begin with prayers from Moss Family Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 19, before proceeding to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 801 Oak St., North Aurora, to celebrate Mass at 10:30 a.m.

After bank representatives brought the issue to St. Charles police, an investigation revealed the thefts, including a check she made from the man’s accounts for $3,500, payable to MetLife Mortgage, in 2009.

The bank repaid the victim and on Friday, Pranga made restitution by repaying the bank the full $21,900, records show.

Pranga had served on the Geneva Chamber of Commerce’s Geneva Women in Business committee, was involved in the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce and was on the board of directors of Literacy Volunteers of American-Fox Valley.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A St. Charles woman who was accused of stealing $21,900 from the client of a bank she managed pleaded guilty Friday, avoiding a possible prison term.

In a plea agreement with prosecutors and the victim, Lynn Pranga, 56, of St. Charles, agreed to a sentence of two years of probation and 200 hours of community service.

She cannot go into any MB Financial Bank branch, or contact the victim, an elderly man, court records show.

Prosecutors dropped felony charges of financial exploitation of the elderly and forgery in exchange for the guilty plea, records show. She faced up to

15 years in prison and a $25,000 fine on the elderly exploitation charge.

Kane County prosecutors said the St. Charles police and the victim were in agreement with the decision to accept the plea.

Pranga’s attorney Kenneth Johnson said his client “deeply regrets her mistake.”

“She has always been prepared to make amends,” Johnson said. “Lynn is deeply sorry to all the people she let down and she is looking forward to moving on in a positive direction.”

Pranga first was charged in July 2012 and then indicted by a grand jury in March 2013.

Pranga had stolen money from a certificate of deposit in the time period from 2009 to 2011.

BATAVIA – H.C. Storm Elementary School parent Ellen Knautz has started a petition urging that Batavia School District 101 reconsider changes proposed for H.C. Storm Elementary School, including using the art and music rooms as regular classroom space.

As of Friday afternoon, 96 people have signed the petition at www.thepetitionsite. com.

“I think that parents want to make sure that this is the only solution that will work,” said Knautz, who has a child who will be in third grade at the school. “I believe that parents have valuable input to provide.”

She is concerned the school’s art and music program will suffer because it will lose its specialized classrooms starting this fall.

Knautz noted that the other elementary schools in the district will have dedicated rooms for art and music.

H.C. Storm Principal Timothy McDermott recently told parents that increased enrollment has led to space constraints, and the art and music rooms will be used as regular classroom space.

“The art and music teachers at H.C. Storm cannot teach as effectively in student classrooms compared to rooms customized for their subject,” Knautz stated in her petition.

Knautz said any learning materials that are used will have to be portable.

McDermott also told parents of a summer construction project that will involve enclosing the B and D pods.

He said the newly configured spaces will be used by staff to provide interventions and enrichment for students.

As part of her petition, Knautz asked for the district to reconsider that plan.

“Adding rooms for intervention at the expense of the children whose teachers use this space every day to supplement the classroom experience can’t possibly be the ideal solution for H.C. Storm,” the petition stated.

McDermott could not be reached for comment. He will host several meetings with parents during the summer to discuss programming, space and staffing. The first one will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Knautz said she plans to attend the meeting.

“I am going to it with an open mind and a list of questions,” she said.

Thumbs up to the decision by Virtual Learning Solutions to withdraw its application to open an online-only charter school in the Fox Valley that would have spanned 18 districts, including those in Batavia, Geneva, Kaneland and St. Charles.

The decision has ended months of worry about what the virtual charter could mean for our districts, including loss of students and state funding, and what type of education would have been provided by the for-profit, out-of-state company that would have provided the curriculum and day-to-day management of the charter.

All 18 districts denied the proposed charter. Virtual Learning Solutions officials withdrew their appeal to the Illinois Charter School Commission due to recent legislation that prohibits the creation of any new virtual charter school until next April; plans had called for the online school to open this fall.

Today’s – and tomorrow’s – technology offers unprecedented educational opportunities. Virtual education options have the potential to benefit students. But more options doesn’t automatically create better quality of education.

Such opportunities need to be well thought-out. The legislation requires the state charter commission to study virtual charter schools and present a report to lawmakers

by March 2014.

Determining best practices and setting firm standards for virtual schools will lead to better educational opportunities for students. And isn’t that what everybody wants?

Work, not retirement, the secret to good health

Thumbs up to local baseball and softball teams that made it to the state finals last weekend.

The St. Charles East baseball and softball teams took part in the state final four last weekend, with baseball placing third and softball taking second in the Class 4A division of the Illinois High School Association.

Two teams qualifying for state from the same school, the same season, is highly unusual. But given the seasons these two teams had, it’s not surprising.

St. Charles East won 33 games this past softball season, the most successful in program history to date. While the Saints obviously wanted to win the whole thing, their three-run, seventh inning rally for a 3-2 win against powerhouse Barrington in the state semifinal may prove just as memorable.

For baseball, East coach Len Asquini said the team’s top priority of ensuring the Saints were sure-handed at catcher, second base, shortstop and center field was one of the reasons they made their first state appearance since 2004.

St. Francis’s baseball team also made it to state – for the first time in the school’s history – in the 3A class, and walked away with second place.

After starting the season 6-8, the team went on to win 18 of its next 21 games.

High school sports teach teamwork and instill appreciation for hard work and dedication, while encouraging players to constantly improve their abilities. All are skills that will prepare them for life after 12th grade.

We are proud of these excellent athletes, and hope their communities are too.

Teddy Roosevelt once said “the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.”

Recent research suggests he may have been more right than he knew – life’s “best prize” might actually extend life itself.

Our common perception is that retirement is a time when we can relax and take better care of ourselves after stressful careers. But what if work itself is beneficial to our health, as several recent studies suggest?

One of them, by Jennifer Montez of Harvard University and Anna Zajacova of the University of Wyoming, examined why the gap in life expectancy between highly educated and less-educated Americans has been growing so rapidly.

Examining the growing educational gradient in life expectancy from 1997 to 2006, Montez and Zajacova focused on white women ages 45 to

In addition to differential trends in smoking by education, they concluded that among these women “employment was, in and of itself, an important contributor.” The life expectancy of less-educated women was being shortened by their lower employment rates compared with those of highly educated women.

Researchers at the Institute of Economic Affairs in Britain have also recently identified “negative and substantial effects on health from retirement.” Similarly, a study published in 2008 by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that full retirement increased difficulties with mobility and daily activities by 5 percent to 16 percent and, by reducing physical exertion and social interactions, also harmed mental health.

The broader literature on the question of whether retirement harms health has been more mixed. The big question is whether the observed physical deterioration after

retirement occurs because it is underlying poor health that leads people to end their working life. Some studies that try to control for this reverse causality find that retirement doesn’t harm health – and may actually improve it.

My own reading of all of these studies is that there is at least strongly suggestive evidence that not working, in and of itself, can be harmful to your health.

Most of us seem to think that we would be in better health if we won the lottery and spent our days on the beach, rather than struggling with sometimes stressful jobs.

Yet the next time you think your job is killing you, just remember that the evidence, if anything, suggests the opposite.

Your job may be saving your life.

Where is the respect?

I’m seeking a Christian church where there is a sense of reverence and worship when one enters the sanctuary of the church. As the prelude is being played, people sit quietly and prepare for worship by praying to themselves or contemplating their walk with God. Are there any churches out there still like that? Nowadays, in churches I have attended, the sanctuary is a big, noisy place, with people talking and laughing as if it were a party. There is no attitude of reverence or respect for where they are. There might be a brief prelude played, but it is difficult to hear in the noisy atmosphere. And the manner of dress for some people is inappropriate for church. Would they wear the same outfit for a wedding or a funeral of a dear friend or relative? I don’t think so. Outward preparation to meet God symbolizes the inward consecration that God requires. Let’s begin to live that way.

Immediate tax revenue I’d like to propose two immediate tax revenue subjects for the Tri-Cities. No. 1, strict enforcement of the littering laws, more specifically around retention ponds and strip malls that have litter that [goes] into the retention ponds and thus [creates] just an unsightly mess.

No. 2, ticket businesses and homeowners that shoot their grass clippings out onto curbed areas, where it drains into the sewer system, thus costing the city more to maintain the sewer system. These two proposals, if enforced, could add some revenue to the cities.

It’s a choice For the sake of our children, I am happy that gay marriage did not pass in Illinois. As a doctor friend stated, if being gay is a gene, the gene would have died off years ago. The gay movement involves a choice that changes the fabric of society.

It is not a simple choice, but neither is adultery or a life of celibacy or a life as a thief or a life as a saint. We can and should control our behavior to promote the beauty of the natural in our world.

Pension reform?

A couple of weeks ago, there was an article that Applebee’s was closing. It’s a Saturday, and we just went there. It was almost empty, but our meal was the best meal we’ve ever

First, a history lesson. In past years, Illinois used state funds allocated for pensions for other “pet” projects. The state promised to pay back the money. To ensure that this would

happen, the state constitution was amended to include the wording a pension could not be “diminished or impaired.”

In spite of the promise to pay back the money, the state did not follow through, causing this to be a pension theft. The state government violated its fiduciary responsibilities and should be held accountable.

The already-retired employees should not be included in any pension reform. They made a decision to retire based on written retirement benefits. If there is to be any pension reform, then negotiations should occur among non-retired employees, unions and the state. Retired employees are not [necessarily] represented by unions. Any change to their pension benefits will go to court. Does the state have the money or time to fight this? It is interesting that there is no proposal to include retired judges, who are also state employees, in a reduction of pensions. Is this “buying” votes? A solution may include a higher tax on luxury items, along with a graduated income tax. Thirty-four other states have a graduated tax, and this is what the legislature needs to consider. I would rather have ethical representatives in Springfield and a governor who will uphold the state constitution, instead of a group pretending the reformation of the pension system is the solution of the state’s financial woes.

A for-profit operation Whatever else it might be, K-12 (a company that would run a virtual school), is not a nonprofit. Virtual Learning Solutions was formed in February 2013 to sell its product, K-12 Virtual School System. The K-12 is most definitely a for-profit operation.

After Gov. Quinn and the assembly voted a one-year moratorium on virtual schools and put the issue on hold, the [board] president of Virtual Learning Solutions resigned, and her place is now held by the secretary.

Can one serve two masters – children and families of our school district and the shareholders of K-12? Where one’s treasure lies, there will be the heart.

I give the children and the community to be the heart of the school board. As for K-12, we citizens get to pay the fees to the them, and they have no building cost (computer learning done at home), no transportation (ditto), no community of students and teachers and no requirement to hire certified teachers. They only get to enjoy their trip to the bank. If we did contract with them down the road, we would have virtually (pun?) no control over what they do. ...

When I was in school, we did not go to public school, and I’m a baby boomer, but money was tight.

We’re paying for iPads, and we’re paying for their schooling.

But they throw garbage on the street; they are not well-behaved kids and the teachers have to put up with them. I think it’s enough. Have them teach reading, math and science.

That’s it. Any extra activities?

My parents had to pay for piano and choir and everything else.

Let the parents pay the bill.

Taxpayers, we’ve had enough.

Defending Mark Kirk I’m getting very irritated about people saying Mark Kirk is not representing his constituents. In fact, he is the only senator in the state of Illinois who is representing his constituents.

The fact of the matter is, Dick Durbin is only interested in what the illegal immigrants want in Chicago, and he has been demonstrating that consistently for many years now.

He has promoted illegal immigration, he has protected people who have gone afoul of the law – he and Luis Guitierrez and Mayor Daley and Gov. Quinn.

Mark Kirk has a lot of courage.

I’m glad he’s standing up. I have read the entire 844-page bill, plus all of the amendments, and I can tell you it is a giveaway program to all illegal immigrants of our country.

I am going to write a whole editorial about specific points in this immigration bill. I’m not opposed to fixing the immigration system. I agree it’s broken.

But we can’t have a giveaway program that is a detriment to this country and our country’s security, which is what this bill is. It is a terrible, terrible bill.

Thank you, Mr. Kirk, for thinking about the real, law-abiding American citizens.

Tri-Cities, Kane foreclosure activity declines

Last month, the number of homes facing foreclosure in central and western Kane County decreased by about 18 percent, compared to May 2012, according to the latest round of foreclosure data.

RealtyTrac, a company specializing in tracking home foreclosure activity across the country, reported that in May, 189 homes faced foreclosure actions brought by lenders across

In May 2012, that same region suffered 230 foreclosures, according to RealtyTrac.

While pronounced, the decline fell far short of the slide in foreclosure activity reported by RealtyTrac in April. Two

months ago, the Tri-Cities and six surrounding communities logged only 76 foreclosures, RealtyTrac reported, a decline of 61 percent from the same month a year earlier.

However, the data for May continues to square with other data from the housing market both locally and nationally.

Lender Processing Services, for instance, reported delinquency rates in the U.S. dropped in April to less than 6.5 percent for the first time since mid-2008, while the number of Americans facing foreclosure declined 25 percent in April.

And locally, the number of homes being sold either as a result of foreclosure or short

sale continues to decline, as well.

In the Tri-Cities, information reported by the MainStreet Organization of Realtors indicated that in April, so-called distressed properties accounted for about 21 percent of all houses sold in St. Charles, Geneva and Batavia.

Home sale numbers for May have yet to be reported.

RealtyTrac said foreclosure activity declined nationally in May by 28 percent from May 2012, and statewide by 47 percent.

Kane County continued to suffer the worst foreclosure rate in the state, with 1 in every 274 homes in the county in foreclosure, RealtyTrac said.

Red velvet mites are in their glory Lots of things happen on the trails in the Hickory Knolls Natural Area.

Chipmunks and 13-lined ground squirrels sometimes choose these open areas to dig their burrows. Killdeer have used them to scrape out their bare-bones nests. And male red velvet mites have found them to be perfect spots for pitching woo and tiny sperm packets in hopes of attracting a mate.

With the wet weather we’ve enjoyed these past few weeks, red velvet mites are in their glory. These tiny – a few millimeters or so in length – arachnids normally lay low, conserving the moisture inside their desiccation-prone bodies. But when the rains come, so do the velvet mites, out to do what nature tells them. Along the way they wave, dance and leave miniscule trails of silken thread behind in their wake.

Red velvet mites belong to the family Trombidiidae, and a big family it is – 300 species, more or less, across 10 genera. They are distant relatives of chiggers and ticks

Tiny yet conspicuous, red velvet mites measure only a few millimeters in length but are hard to miss against a background of moist soil and leaf litter.

GOOD NATURED Pam Otto but, thankfully, show no fondness at all for human tissue.

Instead, the species in our area have a taste for insects – specifically, those that consume various fungi and bacteria on our woodland floors. Since, believe it or not, fungi and bacteria are essential cogs in the woodland ecology machine, velvet mites do us a huge favor by keeping fungivores and bacterivores in check.

So let’s get back to the good stuff – velvet mite mating rituals. Male mites know that the only way their genes will get passed along is if they somehow connect with a female. And yet ... they have no copulatory organs. What’s a macho mite to do?

Instead of beefy brawn or handsome good looks, manly mites rely on artistry and seduction. Oh, and silk.

After setting down an array of spermatophores, the male

produces an intricate silky trail leading back to the packets.

When a female velvet mite comes across one of these trails, she seeks out the artisan who created it.

Amid much leg waving and tapping movements, the female presumably passes judgment on her gyrating swain. If he makes the grade, she sits down and accepts his

However, assuming all goes well, fertile eggs and eventually little mite larvae will result. Even tinier than their teensy parents, and sixlegged instead of eight, these little guys live parasitically on other arthropods such as insects, spiders or even daddy longlegs.

They sap a small amount of fluids, not really enough to cause harm, and often appear as no more than a speck of red on their hosts’ bodies.

They pass through three more developmental stages – protonymph, deutonymph and tritonymph – acquiring two more legs along the way before finally maturing into

adults.

Perhaps because their name includes the word “mite,” or maybe because of their vague resemblance to other nuisance arachnids such as clover mites (which eat plant matter and can appear in large numbers), velvet mites suffer from a reputation that’s undeservedly poor.

If you should be lucky enough to come upon them on a trail – or, even better, in your yard – let them be.

They’ve found a habitat that’s to their liking, and will work to keep it healthy for both them and, inadvertently, us too. Let the pitching of woo ensue.

During a remarkable junior year at Batavia, Coffey quarterbacked a stateranked football team, was the leading scorer for the Bulldogs’ basketball team and batted third and played first base for a Batavia baseball team that, like the football team, nabbed an Upstate Eight Conference River championship.

Coffey’s year-round investment paid off handsomely in each season, earning him Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Male Athlete of the Year honors for 2012-13.

Coffey’s sports calendar is booked to an extreme but, like older brothers Jordan and Jesse and younger brother Canaan, he’s not complaining.

“It’s one of those things, my parents have always emphasized if you still love a certain sport, you should still go ahead and play it because this is the only time in your life you can play all three,” Coffey said.

In Coffey’s case, each can be played with plenty of flair.

As football and basketball teammate Zach Strittmatter noted, Coffey has the knack for looking calm and inspiring confidence in teammates even under duress.

During baseball season, he sported long, flowing hair that gave him a West Coastlook, and his leadership style matches.

“I’ve had a number of college coaches who have witnessed him play who have kind of described he has that ‘It factor,’ ” Batavia football coach Dennis Piron said.

“That whole package, that leadership, that ability to thrive in pressure situations. He has a high level of comfort. When he plays games, they look easier for him than anybody else out there.”

Coffey won the starting quarterback job for a Batavia football program with sky-high expectations, and he had to replace one of the school’s all-time greats, Noel Gaspari.

No sweat for Coffey – at least, by the looks of it. A Kane County Chronicle First Team All-Area quarterback, Coffey passed for 1,732 yards and 18 touchdowns while guiding the Bulldogs to their second straight undefeated regular season.

If there’s a time of year that tests Coffey’s resolve to stick with three sports, it’s November, as basketball season bears down with his body still hurting from football.

“Transitioning straight from football into basketball, there were a couple weeks where every day I’d wake up, my legs were so tired and sore, and I’d have to go to practice later,” Coffey said. “So there was a little bit of [questioning], but I’ve

The sight of a 22-foot jumper rippling the net also is known to have a restorative effect. Coffey, a shooting guard, led the Bulldogs’ basketball team in scoring (11.6 points a game) while sinking 38 percent of his 3-point attempts and shooting 85 percent from the free-throw line.

His basketball game is heavily reliant on shooting touch, which he somehow maintains despite his divided offseason responsibilities.

“It’s kind of weird – it almost seems like he’s the one kid that his shot doesn’t leave him, ever,” Strittmatter said. “In the summer he comes back and it looks just as it did when we finished in the winter with basketball season. He puts in a lot of time, I know he shoots a lot in the gym with his dad and his other brothers, too, but it’s almost like his shot never leaves him.”

Coffey’s banner year spilled into the spring. Coffey batted .386 while slugging 17 extra base hits, including a team-lead-

ing 11 doubles, and drove in 25 runs for the baseball Bulldogs, who tied eventual Class 4A third-place finisher St. Charles East for the conference championship.

It’s mid-June, so that means Coffey is already knee-deep in preparations for next school year in each of his three sports. His senior year is a source of massive enthusiasm on multiple fronts, including the possibility to team up with Canaan, who will be a sophomore, in basketball and potentially football.

From a team standpoint, a pair of crushing postseason upsets this school year – to Downers Grove North in the first round of the 7A football playoffs and to Hoffman Estates in a baseball regional semifinal – provide obvious motivation for the 2013-14 school year.

“You can’t take anything for granted,” said Coffey, who likely will play football or baseball in college. “Records mean nothing when you get to the playoffs, so really making sure every game has that same kind of focus and same kind of intensity going into it. I don’t think we lacked intensity, but that’s a major emphasis this year is don’t take anything for granted. As I learned twice this year, you never know how suddenly it can end.”

The good news for Coffey: When something ends, a promising, new beginning is never far away.

Johnson acknowledged some interest in Northern Illinois, but he grew tried of waiting to see whether the Huskies would eventually offer a scholarship.

He said it was also somewhat difficult to shut the door on Harvard, though it was uncertain whether he ultimately would be admitted to the Ivy League school.

Johnson still might follow through on plans to attend a camp at Harvard at the end of the month since travel arrangements already have been made. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You just have to make a decision at some point I

Then the St. Charles North senior got down to business.

Johnson, a 6-foot-4, 240 pound tight end, offered Lustig his verbal commitment to play at Ball State, one of four Mid-American Conference programs that had offered Johnson a scholarship.

GENEVA – One of the Kane County Cougars’ lone bright spots in a 5-1 loss to Wisconsin on Friday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark was the performance of 37-year-old Shawn Camp, making his second rehab appearance with the club.

The Cubs reliever threw two scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out two.

“He looked good,” Cougars manager Mark Johnson said.

“His tempo was good. His pace was good. He mixed his pitches well.”

Johnson said Camp’s presence provided a valuable lesson to the young players on the team about how a major leaguer goes about his business.

“Camp’s a pro’s pro,” Johnson said. “There’s a reason why he’s been in the game as long as he has. He goes about his business the right way. He works hard. He pays attention during the game,

and that’s good for these kids at this level to see.”

Camp gave up a single to the last batter he faced, Tyrone Taylor, but he promptly picked him off first base.

Taylor was 4 for 5 at the plate for the Timber Rattlers.

Three of those hits came off Cougars starter Michael Heesch (3-5), who pitched four strong Shawn Camp i n n i n g s b e fore allowing a pair of runs in the fifth and three in the sixth.

“He left the ball up a couple times and every time he left it up, they seemed not to miss it,” Johnson said. “They just got some timely hits and they just got the most out of when they did put the ball in play.”

Heesch gave up eight hits, including a double off the bat of Alfredo Rodriguez that scored the first two runs of the game.

“He mixed his pitches well,” Johnson said. “He stayed down in the zone. He threw his changeup both to righties and lefties, so our guys had three pitches to worry about instead of two.

Usually righty on righty at this level, you’re not worried about the changeup too much.”

The Cougars (29-35) scored their only run in the eighth off reliever Ryan Gibbard, thanks largely to Taylor misplaying catcher Willson Contreras’ one-out base hit into a triple. Contreras scored on Oliver Zapata’s grounder to second.

What’s the first impression of coach Masoncup?

Basically our first impression with him is he’s very, very serious about the game.

He’s such a great coach, he’s had years and years of experience coaching teams. His vast knowledge of the game is very evident to all of us through the way he interacts us with players and coaches, and he also teaches you the game of basketball at the same time.

How drastic would you say the differences in playing style are between what you guys are used to and what coach Masoncup wants?

Not much is that different.

Both coaches had the goal of winning and pushing us to do our best. So far in camp, we definitely have been doing a lot of basic, skill work that has really been helping us and improving every aspect

The last couple seasons have been pretty rough for North, but it seem like you guys have some promising younger players in the program. How far off do you realistically think you guys are from competing with the best teams in the conference?

We definitely have a lot of young players, which I think is to our benefit because I believe in the next season or even season after that we’ll be able to compete at a much stronger level. We’ll basically just be able to compete at the levels of the other teams and use all of the strengths the young players have and

be able to build on that as the years come, as we all get older and the team gets more cohesive and learns how to play with each other.

What’s been a thing or two you’ve seen already at the start of this summer that’s been encouraging, maybe from a certain teammate, something that’s been a source of optimism?

The thing I’ve see from almost every player at camp is the dedication and determination to get better.

Everyone has been putting in more of a 100 percent effort at all times, which only being at camp for a few days now is very, very promising because I know everyone is very serious about making [next season] much better than it has been.

What did you personally take from getting some varsity experience as a younger player that you’re looking to build on in your own game?

Personally I think the biggest thing has been the different speed of the game.

fast paced. You have to be a lot tougher and more determined and have a strong mindset. … I’ve definitely experienced the ups and downs but plan on using what I’ve learned to help other players and be a leader on the court.

If there a certain skill you’re really wanting to add to your game this summer?

One of the things … is my defense, and that’s something I feel if you’re a good team that can play strong defense and always be aggressive throughout the entire game, that can convert to scoring points at the other end of the court.

Are you one of those people that loves summer all the way through or do you usually get kind of antsy part-way through and start looking forward to going back?

I definitely love the break for summer just to hang out with friends and do stuff [being in school] doesn’t allow you to do but when it comes closer to August, I definitely get antsy and excited for upcoming events that will take place in the next school year.

Davern and her teammates are spending June acclimating to new coach Sean Masoncup, who took over after former coach Colleen Backer stepped down in the spring. Davern, who also will play AAU basketball this summer with Illinois Hoop Dreams, spoke with Kane County Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab for this week’s Weekend Chit-chat about the coaching transition, North’s up-andcoming roster and her take on summer. Royal Hawk to host qualifier for Illinois Open ST. CHARLES – Royal Hawk Country Club on Monday will host the fourth of seven qualifiers for the Illinois Open on July 22 through 24. Tee times begin at 8 a.m.

Hopefully, we have good weather,” Royal Hawk associate golf professional Brian Carroll said. “It’s a good mix of pros and amateurs.”

The 65-member field, which is vying for 13 spots in the 64th annual Open – to be held at The Glen Club in Glenview – features several Tri-Cities area players, including Adam Baumann, Liam Creamer, Milo French, Eric Hactzel and Gary King III. As for which players score those goals, nothing matters less to the Blackhawks.

Skeptical?

So was I, until so many Hawks echoed the we-don’tcare message so many times that I couldn’t help but believe they were being sincere.

“I don’t really care who scores,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said Friday as he fielded questions about some players who were scoring and others who were not.

“As long as we get some production across the board.”

It turns out that none of the Hawks care as long as the job gets done.

Leave it to the rest of us to keep track of individual goals as the Hawks look to double their series lead today in Game 2 against the Boston Bruins. Bryan Bickell and Patrick Sharp are at the top of the list with eight playoff goals apiece. Marian Hossa is next with seven, then Patrick Kane with six, then Andrew Shaw with five.

To the Hawks, we might as well be comparing hits or blocked shots.

“I don’t think it matters – goals,” said Hawks forward Dave Bolland, who scored his first goal of the playoffs Wednesday en route to an unforgettable triple-overtime win. “I think it’s a matter of heart and the way you play.

“Goals are always big, points are always big, but if you’re playing your heart out every night and you’re playing your game, the goals will come.”

What if they don’t?

“Goals are goals,” Bolland said with a shrug. “I think when you’re keeping that puck out of the back of your net, that’s the main thing.”

That’s a theme with the Hawks.

Defense matters. Discipline is key. Depth can make the difference.

None of those factors lead the box score – goals do – but all play an enormous role.

Michal Handzus knows this as well as anyone. The 36-year-old forward has played in 950 career regular-season games, not to mention 92 career playoff games.

“In the playoffs, usually if you look at the teams that get to the finals or win the Cup, it’s not all of the time the top players,” Handzus said. “Usually, those matches, you play top guys against top guys, and they can kind of nullify each other pretty good.

“And then you need those

role players to get through and win it for your team.”

Shaw did so in Game 1 against the Bruins to attain celebrity status.

Bolland scored, too. So did Brandon Saad. Other heroes have included second-tier players such as Michael Frolik, Marcus Kruger and Johnny Oduya.

But even those guys don’t care about scoring goals.

No such luck, part II: Hawks forward Patrick Kane finished as the runner-up for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, which is given to the player judged to have the best combination of skill and sportsmanship.

Tampa Bay Lightning forward Martin St. Louis won the award for the third time in the past four seasons. He received 47 first-place votes and 824 points overall, while Kane received 44 first-place votes and 785 points overall.

BLACKHAWKS Jonathan Toews Fresh off of winning the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the NHL’s best defensive forward, Toews could be in store for another award-winning performance in Game 2. Although Toews has scored only one goal in the postseason, he has eight assists to go along with 16 takeaways, which is second in the NHL. BRUINS Tyler Seguin The Bruins’ 21-year-old center has immense talent, which was implied by his status as the No. 2 overall pick of the 2010 NHL draft. Seguin led the Bruins with eight shots on goal in Game 1, and while he had to settle for no goals and one assist, a similar effort in Game 2 could yield better results.

CHICAGO – Jonathan Toews might need a bigger trophy case.

Toews, who already owns a Stanley Cup ring, a Conn Smythe Trophy and an Olympic gold medal, learned Friday that he won his first Frank J. Selke Trophy as the NHL’s best defensive forward. The other finalists for the award were Patrice Bergeron of the Boston Bruins and Pavel Datsyuk of the Detroit Red Wings.

Toews has established himself as a two-way forward during six NHL seasons. This season was one of his best as he shared the league lead with 56 takeaways, led the Western Conference with a 59.9 percent faceoff percentage, ranked third in the league with a plus28 rating and finished second on the Hawks with 48 points (23 goals, 25 assists).

Previous Hawks players to win the award include

Troy Murray (1986) and Dirk Graham (1991). Toews nearly joined that group two years ago but finished second in the voting to Vancouver Canucks forward Ryan Kesler at the end of the 201011 season.

During the playoffs, Toews ranks second in the league with 16 takeaways to Jonathan go along with Toews one goal and eight assists. He also has a plus-4 rating while averaging nearly 21 minutes of ice time a game.

No such luck: Despite leading the Hawks to a record-setting season, Joel Quenneville finished as the runner-up for the Jack Adams Award as the league’s top coach.

The team advances to the U.S. Youth Regional championship Midwest Regionals in June with the chance to qualify for the national championship in July in Kansas. Waubonsee Community College baseball coach Dave Randall (left), a Kaneland High School graduate, was named the NJCAA Division III Region IV Coach of the Year after leading the Chiefs to the NJCAA Division III World Series for the second time in four years. Randall, who has coached the team for the past 35 years, has 856 career victories. The Chiefs went 38-24 this season, setting a program single-season record. The Chiefs were ranked sixth in the final regular season NJCAA Division III poll. Waubonsee led the nation in stolen bases with 189. The Chiefs also topped all NJCAA Division III teams in hits (587), games played (63), at bats (1,805), plate appearances (2,123), defensive put outs (1,329) and innings pitched (450). Waubonsee finished second nationally in batters hit-by-pitch (86), defensive assists (548) and total fielding chances (1,978).

St. Francis graduate and St. Charles resident Kyle Dawson was named captain to the Yale men’s tennis team as a senior, becoming the third person in his family to lead the Bulldogs. His two brothers, Jeff (2009) and Connor (2010) were captains during their senior seasons. Last fall, Dawson put together a 6-1 doubles record that included a win in the ‘C’ doubles draw at the Princeton-Farnsworth Invitational. Bonding on the Fox Mother, daughter duo refrain from river-kayak ‘race’ for nature’s embrace Noah and I really looked forward to participating in the Mid-American Canoe & Kayak Race again this year, which would have been our fourth in a row. But a few days before the race on June 2 we realized it wouldn’t work.

“Ooh, Noah, you’ve got soccer tryouts that night. Shoot.”

We both knew what that meant. He’d have to pass on paddling this year, lest he be too wiped to do his best at tryouts. We were both bummed, but my disappointment didn’t last long.

“If you switch out of the competitive division, I’ll do it with you,” Holly volunteered.

I was thrilled! I didn’t even have to ask, let alone twist her arm. I’d harbored hopes that she’d paddle with us each year, but suspected the “racing” aspect (I use that term loosely, in my case) wasn’t her thing. But it was Noah’s.

This year, though, we’d planned to skip sharing a heavy canoe and use our own new – and much lighter – kayaks,

Jennifer DuBose and her daughter, Holly, enjoy the day kayaking the Fox River as part of the Fox Valley Canoe and Kayak Race on June 2. instead. I figured he’d leave me in the dust as he took off down river, as I’m not exactly in racing form, right now. I’d decided that was OK, because,

though I’ve enjoyed “paddling my brains out” during previous races, I recall having flashes of awareness that whilst racing I’d been missing opportunities to enjoy a perspective of the river and local wildlife I might not otherwise get.

Paddling alongside someone not racing for the finish would ensure I’d get to enjoy the view, and it did. The only thing missing, this year, besides Noah, was the sun. It was another great day and another great race put on by the Fox Valley Park District and yes, there really was a lot to appreciate – including the opportunity to finally take it all in with my daughter.

Before we even got into our kayaks

my animal lovers and I noticed a dog, an older shepherd, who cried each time the gun heralding the start of another heat was fired. I felt badly for “Utah,” as she is called, as she wasn’t a happy camper.

She wasn’t the only one.

My brave Holly, who’d gamely stepped up to take Noah’s place, had only ever been in a kayak twice before.

Though we entered the “open” recreation division and planned to take it easy, she found it all a tad unnerving, at first.

“I feel like I’m in kindergarten,” she commented wryly, as we both struggled to hang onto the guide ropes meant to keep us in our lanes beside each other as we waited for the gun to be fired.

At one point I floated way off course, practically colliding with another boat, so I reached for her hand in hopes that she’d pull me back to where I belonged.

She did, but I’m hopeless.

Rhubarb, a seasonal favorite One of the many reasons that I love the change of seasons is the food each season brings.

With spring and early summer comes fresh spinach, lettuce, strawberries, and one my childhood favorites, rhubarb. I know many of you are making a sour face right now, but I LOVE the tartness.

My mother and I recently went to a nearby farm and picked fresh rhubarb. She made a delicious rhubarb pie and rhubarb sauce which was great with vanilla ice cream.

A half-dozen plants will provide enough rhubarb for a family of four.

It is best to plant or divide rhubarb in the early spring while the plants are still dormant. Plant them in full sun in fertile soil that is high in organic matter and has been

worked 12 to 15 inches deep.

Plant the roots with the crown bud 2 inches below the surface of the soil.

Spacing is approximately 36 to 48 inches. You can also transplant established plants in the fall if you mulch with straw or other coarse material. Rhubarb requires annual fertilization in early spring before the growth starts.

Transplants should not be harvested for two years.

Rhubarb can be harvested after two years. Only the stalks are harvested as the leaf blade contains high amounts of oxalic acid and should not be eaten.

She had reason to be irritated. I tried to shift her focus off me.

“Look! A heron!” I said, pointing to the shoreline at the beautiful white bird there. It may have been a crane. Or an egret. Whatever it’s called – and I suspect it hardly cares, it’s my favorite bird. We also spotted several pairs of nesting geese, a few ducks with their stillfuzzy ducklings and even roosters.

Yes, roosters.

Well, we didn’t actually see them. We heard them as we paddled past a “house,” located several miles down-river just before the finish line at McCullough Park in Aurora. It seemed they were calling to us in greeting. Or perhaps they

were annoyed that the flurry of activity on the Fox had disturbed their naps.

I suspect that’s it, as I don’t recall hearing them in years past, and this year, about 450 paddlers took to the Fox for the annual race, more than ever before. No wonder the geese craned their necks as we passed and the roosters crowed!

But at least the river moved more swiftly than last year. (That’s the understatement of the year. They still haven’t found our beater canoe, which, you may recall, Noah and I were forced to abandon on the riverbed last year when the low water level made paddling impossible. Even the fish jumped over us. I imagine someone hauled it out and planted geraniums in it. I hope so.)

“I feel like I’m paddling down a street,” Holly commented, as she scanned the tree-lined shoreline for more animals.

We discovered they weren’t

confined to the shoreline, however, when we caught up with “Fudgie,” an intrepid Chihuahua who reportedly has proudly manned a kayak for 10 years, who was also on the Fox that day enjoying his first race.

But he didn’t have to work as hard as the other race newbies.

“Toward the end my arms started to feel like they were gonna fall off,” Holly said, but I could tell by her laughter and smiles that she was proud she’d done it.

But that doesn’t mean she’ll be game again next year.

“Maybe,” she replied coyly.

I sure hope so, but it’s her call.

But oh, how I would love to have both of my ducklings out there paddling with me.

Deeply water established rhubarb during dry weather (which certainly isn’t a problem right now). Healthy plants are able to store large amounts of food in their roots for an improved harvest the following year.

Rhubarb plants will occasionally produce flower-like stalks that should be removed

as soon as they appear because flower and seed formation reduces plant vigor.

I was lucky enough to be able to bring home a bunch of rhubarb as well. It will store nicely in the refrigerator for a couple of weeks; however,

I know mine won’t last that long. I am already searching around for new recipes to try with this seasonal favorite of mine.

Build up weak ankles to minimize future sprains Dear Doctor K: I tend to sprain my ankle fairly often. Are there any exercises that could help me strengthen my ankles and prevent future sprains?

Dear Reader: Your ankles are remarkable joints. They must bear the full weight of your body, yet stay nimble and flexible. Every step, every jump, every move puts your ankles through a surprising range of motion. Even when you stand quietly, your ankles are constantly making minute adjustments to help you stay balanced.

Your central ankle bone is called the talus. Your shin bone, the large bone in your lower leg, connects to the talus. A second, smaller bone in the lower leg ends alongside the talus. Bracketed by two bony bumps (each called a malleolus) on either side of the ankle, the talus acts as a hinge that allows you to point and flex your foot.

Two other joints on the talus permit sideways movements. Two ligaments (the strong, usually inelastic, tissue that bind joints) link the inner malleolus to the ankle bones. Three more ligaments bind the outer malleolus to the talus and heel bone. Ligaments play an important role in ankle

Ankle sprains occur when you roll your foot inward or outward, or turn or twist an ankle. Probably the most common cause of an ankle sprain is when your foot comes down on the floor or ground, and instead of landing on the sole of the foot you land on the outer edge of the foot. The force of your weight on the outer edge puts a great strain on the ligaments of the outer part of your ankle.

That stretches, or even tears, the ligaments that keep the bones and joints properly positioned.

Depending on the force applied as you land, the sprain can be mild, moderate or severe.

The same injuries that cause ankle sprains can also cause ankle fractures. It can be hard even for your doctor to determine if you’ve broken a bone just by examining your ankle; an X-ray often is needed. Weak ankles not only have a tendency toward repeated sprains; they also are more

easily fractured.

Weak ankles often can be traced to repeated sprains that loosen the ligaments – and loose ligaments increase the risk of future ankle sprains. It’s a vicious cycle.

However, loose ligaments are not the only reason ankles have a tendency to suffer from sprains.

Weakness of muscles that support the ankle also make sprains more likely. That’s where exercises come in.

You’re likely to benefit from an ankle workout that incorporates strength exercises and stretches. These exercises will help you increase flexibility in your ankles and build up ankle-supporting muscles.

If possible, work with a physical therapist. He or she can design an individualized program to meet your needs.

Your advice seemed a bit zealous when you told her she’d be choosing smoking over her relationship if she didn’t meet his demand. But in your haste to condemn smoking, you seemed insensitive to the fact that it may take her longer than three weeks to quit. If you know that smoking is a bad habit, you must also know that it is addictive and can be a hard habit to kick that may take longer than 3 weeks.

Also, I might point out, that in the reverse of this situation, the fiance has chosen his aversion to a bad habit over his love for his future wife, and this seems just as shallow. If the two really care for each other, they should be able to find common ground on this issue to save their relationship. – Nameless, Gary, Ind. Dear Abby: The non-profit Center for Population Options conducted a study that disclosed that more than 500,000 babies are born to teen mothers in the United States each year.

More than 50 percent of the pregnant teens are unmarried, and 93 percent of teens who have babies choose to keep them rather than placing them with adoptive parents. Seventy percent of pregnant teens also fail to graduate from high school.

Statistics also reveal that one in 10 American teenage girls becomes pregnant each year, and when today’s 14-year-old girls leave their teen years, 40 percent of them will be, or will have been, pregnant.

In the United States, the teen pregnancy rate is twice that of Canada, England or France, and seven times that of Holland. The United States is the only developed country where teenage pregnancy is increasing.

That is so often true. However, bridge fascinates many people who do not have a good memory for what has happened at the table. They also do not remember when to break the “golden rules” of the game. Which dictum should West break on this deal?

South is in three no-trump.

West leads the club king. South holds up his ace until the third round. What happens next?

North made a weak jump overcall, showing a reasonable six-card diamond suit and 5-10 high-card points. South, knowing North would not have a four-card major, bid what he hoped he could make.

It is normal for declarer to play a diamond to dummy’s nine at trick four. Here, that works nicely. East wins and shifts to a spade, but South takes his ace and collects one spade, two hearts, five diamonds and one club.

Instead, West must ignore “second hand low” and play his king on the first round of diamonds. Then declarer is doomed.

If he plays low from the dummy, West cashes his clubs. If South wins with dummy’s ace, he gets just two diamond winners.

Note that even if East has the spade king and West the diamond king, those finesses give South only eight tricks: three spades, two hearts, two diamonds and one club.

Watch out for this secondhand-high opportunity when dummy has no side entry.
