GET TO KNOW: AMANDA RUBAN

By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Growing up, 18-year-old Amanda Ruban of Lemont looked forward to participating in the timed onemile run in gym class. It’s hardly a surprise that today she is a successful competitive runner. Ruban, a senior at Lemont High School, was the highest ranking Lemont resident in the village’s recent Advocate Good Samaritan Quarryman Challenge 5K. She took second place in the women’s division, completing the race in 24:01. “I’m always one to push myself,” Ruban said. “Hopefully, I can do it again next year and improve my time.” This is Ruban’s third year participating in the Quarryman Challenge. She previously has competed in the Lemont Park District Freedom Run, in which she received first place in the women’s bracket, and the Chicago Women’s Half Marathon, where she took the top title in her age bracket. As a child, Ruban volunteered at 5K events, and she enjoys running with her mother. Ruban was captain of the Lemont High School all-conference cross-country team her senior season and also ran

LEMONT – Andrew Podczerwinski is working to regain mobility, and his Lemont High School classmates will help him toward that goal this weekend. Podczerwinski, 16, was injured while tubing with friends last June at Bass Lake. An unexpected storm descended on the group. And as they rushed to dock the boat, 80 mile-per-hour winds caused a tree to collapse on Podczerwinski and his friend, Chase Kobilca. Kobilca fractured a foot, but Podczerwinski fared much worse. He suffered five fractured ribs, two pelvic fractures, a shoulder fracture, two collapsed lungs and two fractured vertebrae, leaving him unable to walk. “It happened, and I just kind of moved past it,” Podczerwinski said of the accident. “I feel very positive on the future.” Lemont High School students will participate in the Walk with Andrew 5K, a fundraiser to benefit Podczerwinski’s family. The noncompetitive event is open to staff, students and community members and will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday at the high school football field. Podczerwinski has no memory of the days that followed the accident. But during

that time, he underwent spinal surgery at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Ind. Two steel rods and 10 screws were placed in his spine. After the surgery, he suffered an allergic reaction to the anesthesia. His fever skyrocketed to 105 degrees, and he almost died and had to be kept on breathing tubes for several days. Podczerwinski’s neurosurgeon told his parents he would never walk again. Two weeks later, he was transferred to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago for a two-month stay. While in rehab, Podczerwinski learned that his spinal cord was not completely severed during the accident, changing his prognosis and giving him and his family the hope that someday he might walk again. Podczerwinski returned to school Sept. 17 after spending weeks pursuing his coursework while at the Rehab Institute with the help of two onsite tutors.

Lemont avoids many problems of previous floods By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com LEMONT – For a community bordered by waterways, Lemont came through last week’s flood in better condition than did many other towns in the Chicago area. Several intersections in Lemont were closed due to April 18 flooding. But Lemont Police Chief Kevin Shaughnessy said no homes appeared to be flooded. Traffic problems were made worse by drivers unwilling to adhere to the road closures. They consistently attempted to navigate their vehicles through standing water on 135th Street, officials said. “Every few minutes, someone tries to go through the barrels,” said Tom Ballard, director of the Lemont Emergency Management Agency. “You get so frustrated.” One man drove through a traffic barrier at 135th Street and Archer Avenue in the early morning and swept up in the eddying floodwaters and pulled into a pool several feet high. He escaped only when an EMA officer went to rescue him. The officer was transported via ambulance to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox for exertion and exposure before being released. Officials closed 135th Street and Archer Avenue, New Avenue west of Interstate 355 and Kotlin Road and Main Street. New Avenue

from 127th Street to 135th Street remained closed April 19 because of standing water. The Lemont Police Department called in the Lemont EMA and the Public Works Department to assist in managing traffic conditions April 18. Ten EMA volunteer first-responders provided assistance, the first of which were awoken at 5 a.m. “It was a challenging day,” Shaughnessy said. The department received about 35 calls concerning standing water and traffic. The severity of the flood was caused by the rate of the rainfall, said Ballard. He estimated that Lemont received 6 inches in 14 hours and recalled a 1996 flood that was the result of 17 inches of rain. “It was a long day,” Ballard said. “I felt like a duck by the time I got done.” To Shaughnessy’s knowledge, no homes were flooded. “We were very fortunate,” he said. Public Works Director Ralph Pukula credited village preparedness for the relatively low number of incidents. The flood of 1996 was a catalyst for the implementation of flood-prevention measures, Pukula said. Since then, the village has made identifying and correcting areas vulnerable to floodwaters a priority, adjusting retention pond sizes and retaining wall heights, and keeping the ponds clean to streamline water flow. The Des Plaines River and the Illinois & Michigan Canal both carry stormwater downhill, which prevents flooding. The EMA is working with the Illinois Department of Transportation on a drainage project on Main Street from Route 83 to Illinois Street. The effort is designed to combat future flooding. Throughout the past year, the EMA has partnered with IDOT to clean culverts along the same area, improving the drainage on Main Street.

LEMONT – Road improvement projects will be a spending priority for the village of Lemont in the coming fiscal year. The Village Board unanimously voted at its April 22 meeting to adopt the budget and capital improvement plan for the 2013-14 fiscal year. “A lot of the goal is really working on the local roads,” said Village Administrator Ben Wehmeier. The village is projected to spend $8.6 million in general fund money during the 2013-14 fiscal year, which begins May 1. Wehmeier anticipates the village will attain $9 million in

general fund revenue, creating a $400,000 balance, which is comparable with the balance for the 2012-13 fiscal year. Of the $9 million anticipated for next year’s general fund revenue, $2.4 million will be generated by property taxes. The 2013-14 fiscal year marks the beginning of the village’s five-year plan. Significant spending in the coming fiscal year will go toward prioritized project implementation. Of budgeted expenses, $400,000 will be spent on the Triangle Project on Walker Road, McCarthy Road and Archer Avenue; $160,000 will be designated for the reconstruction of Canal Street; $150,00 will pay for bridge maintenance; and $68,000 will fund

the Walker/McCarthy Project. Administrative work on the village’s annual budget begins in November, and board budget discussions take place in February. The board also voted Monday to apply for the Commonwealth Edison Green Region Program, which could provide up to $10,000 in grant funding to be used for bike trail construction and prairie restoration at 131st Street and Parker Road. Additionally, the board voted to approve an intergovernmental agreement with the Lemont Park District to spend $400,000 in existing grant funds on safety improvements for the Park District building entrance, access roads and paths.

Recognizing student achievements is part of D-113A philosophy In preparing students for their place in the world, Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A works deliberately to develop all aspects of academic, social and emotional development. Recognition of student achievements in these areas is an important part of the District 113A philosophy. Each school has developed a good citizenship reward program, which reinforces the key concepts of respect and responsibility. Students’ efforts and accomplishments are acknowledged in the classroom on a daily basis, but schoolwide peer recognition also takes place. The goal of these recognition programs is two-fold: promote personal responsibility and muCOMMUNITY tual respect. From kindergarten VOICE on, students can receive indepenSusan dent recognition that reinforces Birkenmaier personal responsibility and actions. At Oakwood School, students are invited to bring work that reflects their best effort to the principal. Exemplary work is displayed on a special board outside the library. Students are also recognized each Monday during the morning message and receive a special prize. River Valley students also collect good character and behavior awards throughout the week for a chance to win a weekly PAWS (Positive Attitudes, Winning Students) raffle reward. At River Valley, the three character traits to be reinforced throughout the year are be ready, be respectful and be responsible. Old Quarry school also takes great pride in the Student of the Month program. Twice a month, a student is chosen from each grade level, who exhibits the four “R’s” on a daily basis: respect for others, respect for learning, respect for the environment and community, and respect for themselves. This program is designed to reward students for being good role models to their peers. The district’s group recognition programs also reward contributions toward collective good citizenship goals based on mutual respect and responsibility. The PAWS program, based on a Safe Schools Initiative Program, recognizes students and classes for positive behavior. Group recognition programs are based on competition among classrooms that build collaborative skills and collective responsibility. Classes as a whole are recognized and can earn extra recreational time, lunch with the principals, story time with a guest reader or other rewards that support their efforts to build social responsibility. These are but a few of the many ways that students are encouraged to develop good work habits and social skills. If you hear of a child who receives ones of these awards, please congratulate him/ her and help celebrate the wonderful accomplishment.

8THUMBS UP/THUMBS DOWN Runners make their way through the intersection of Main and Stephen streets April 13 during the 2013 Quarryman Challenge in Lemont. Matthew Piechalak – mpiechalak@ shawmedia.com

People in Lemont know how to organize and support a major event, as was the case with the Advocate Good Samaritan Quarryman Challenge 10 Mile and 5K. This year’s run on April 13 drew more than 600 entrants. Hundreds of people cheered the runners all along the course, which began and ended at the Lemont Village Hall. Kudos to event organizer Dave Fako and the numerous others who gave their time for such a wonderful race. Congratulations to Lemont resident Glen Missaggia, who received the Victor Cardosi Award for charity, unity and community on April 20 from the Diocese of Joliet Chapter of the Knights of Columbus. Missaggia is a devoted member of the Knights of Columbus in Lemont and a dedicated volunteer for the group. He found comfort from his involvement with the group when his wife died of cancer last year. This is a well-deserved honor for Missaggia and a true reflection of the value of this organization.

LEMONT – A Lemont school official has accused two colleagues of spreading lies about his politics at a recent campaign event. Dave Molitor, president of the Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A Board of Education, took to the podium during the public comment portion of the board’s April 16 meeting to air his grievances regarding board members Mike Aurelio and Al Malley. Molitor clarified that he was speaking as a taxpayer, not a board member. He recounted having attended a pre-election Tea Party campaign event for board candidates Susan Petrarca, Brian Bushnell and Michael Clausen. Upon arriving, Molitor said he discovered that Aurelio and Malley were scheduled to give a presentation about the district, although both speakers stated that they were presenting as individuals and not as board representatives. Molitor said that during the presentation, Aurelio highlighted his successes as a former board president and made several derogatory and false statements about Molitor. “This is not an appropriate way to work collaboratively,” said Molitor. “When I’m being attacked in public by those who are supposed to be working collaboratively with me, I will do my utmost not only to defend myself but to respond with the truth.” Molitor told meeting attendees that he would send out corrections, clarifying inaccurate statements made throughout the presentation. Following Molitor’s comment, Aurelio and Malley remained confident in the statements they made during their original presentation. Both board members said the presentation did not take place at a Tea Party event but at a nonpartisan gathering. Malley said the presentation occurred March 14 at the Lemont Township building and

was hosted by Concerned Citizens of Lemont. The statements made by Aurelio and Malley must be considered in the context of the election, said Aurelio, which is an environment of competing ideas. He also said that he would have preferred Molitor to have contacted him to take part in a discussion of any perceived inaccuracies in the presentation rather than making his comments through a platform where board members were unable to respond. “I do my best to be accurate and truthful at all times,” Aurelio said. Malley said that he and Aurelio took questions during their presentation so Molitor could have easily voiced his concern. Molitor has yet to bring any inaccuracies to the attention of Aurelio and Malley, he said. “Mr. Molitor has trouble with the facts sometimes,” Malley said. “I stand by every comment that I made there.”

Tips for newcomers to the game of golf F

ew hobbies can be as enjoyable one moment and as frustrating the next as golf. Golfers know a great putt can be quickly followed by a bad tee shot, and maintaining their composure through the highs and lows of the game is a key to success on the links. Maintaining that composure isn’t always easy, even for the professionals. It’s even more diicult for beginners, who quickly learn the game of golf involves more than just spending sunny weekend afternoons on pristine golf courses. In fact, golf can be quite demanding, and beginners would be wise to heed a few tips before hitting the course. • Don’t commit to an expensive set of clubs right off the bat. Golf clubs can be very expensive, so beginners should buy an afordable secondhand set of clubs so they can get the hang of what they like before spending a lot of money. Visit a pro shop and explain that you are just a beginner. he shop will likely make some valuable

suggestions and might even let you try out a pair of clubs. In addition, many driving ranges allow customers to rent clubs, and this can be a great and inexpensive way to ind the right clubs for you. • Take lessons. Even the very best at self-teaching might ind it extremely diicult to become a self-taught golfer. When irst trying your hand at golf, take some lessons and don’t expect to be playing 18 holes any time soon. Before hitting the course, where you might be discouraged and you might frustrate those goling behind you, learn the fundamentals by taking a few lessons at the driving range. Learn from a professional, who won’t ofer you any hidden secrets to goling glory (there aren’t any) but will ofer sound advice on the game’s fundamentals. • Take the game home with you. Beginners can even take advantage of golf ’s vast popularity by taking the game home with them. his doesn’t mean building a Continued on next page >>>

Andrew Podczerwinski, 16, attempts to retrain himself to walk with the aid of his trainers, Jennifer White and Andrew Dignan, Friday during a rehab session at NextSteps Chicago, 8434 Corcoran Road in Willow Springs.

• MOBILITY Continued from page 4 “He was so anxious to get back to school, to get back to some normalcy,” said Andrea Heinz, who is Podczerwinski’s guidance counselor at Lemont High School. Despite his unusual circumstances, Podczerwinski has maintained honor student status and is on track to graduate on time. Podczerwinski is in a wheelchair and attending physical therapy at NextSteps Chicago in Willow Springs five days each week, working to regain motor and sensory function in his lower extremities. He also works out almost daily. Before the accident, Podczerwinski was on the Lemont High School wrestling team and enjoyed weightlifting. His neurosurgeon told Podczerwinski that his muscle mass prevented the weight of the tree from crushing him when it fell.

“He was always a positive kid. To be honest, I had more down days than he did.” Renata Podczerwinski Mother of Andrew Podczerwinski He already has built some muscular strength and balance in his lower body. Doctors are optimistic about future improvements, saying he has made surprising progress so far. “He was always a positive kid,” said Podczerwinski’s mother, Renata. “To be honest, I had more down days than he did.” The Podczerwinskis relied on their faith as a way to remain hopeful, Renata said. They are members of St. Cyril and Methodius Roman Catholic Church in Lemont. Despite Podczerwinski’s upbeat attitude, the cost of his recovery is undeniably

high. Andrew and Renata estimate that the medical expenses for his recovery, for which there is no projected timeline, will average $200,000 to $300,000 per year. But family and friends have come together to help cover Podczerwinski’s medical costs. Walk with Andrew, an organization devoted to benefiting the Podczerwinski family, hosted a fundraiser with the Lemont Hope and Friendship Foundation on March 16 at the Willowbrook Ballroom. More than 1,000 people attended. And while the final amount raised has not yet been determined, the Podczerwinskis estimate it to be several thousand dollars. Lemont High School hopes to increase that number significantly this weekend through the Walk with Andrew 5K. School officials hope to collect $10,000. “He’s not going to let anything stop him,” Heinz said.

Restaurant reviews

Mécénat serves up bistro charm WESTERN SPRINGS – A warm bistro environment with decor nods to Europe is the setting for Mécénat’s eclectic menu exploring global culinary influences. An enticing aroma greeted us at the door of the Western Springs restaurant on a recent Sunday afternoon, and while we perused the beer and wine lists, the server brought us deliciously crusty french bread, a simple, but great first impression. The wine list is extensive, given that Mécénat (pronounced: ma-say-nah) also operates retail wine sales several nights a week. The soup of the day was butternut squash with apple, but we opted to share a salad of baby spinach with the unusual twist of honey jalapeño vinaigrette – not too spicy, but definitely a shakeup from the norm. It combined fennel and creamy chunks of avocado with a colorful interplay of grape tomato halves as garnish, along with bite-size fritters, whose crisp exterior gave way to warm goat cheese. Outstanding. “Completely different, and there’s a zip to the dressing,” raved my dining companion. The entrees tempted with Grilled Alaskan Halibut with soy glaze, baby bok choy and wild mushroom dumplings; Mushroom Stuffed Filet with port wine sauce, garlic smashed potatoes, Brussels

Entrees range from $12 to $28. My companion was intrigued by the Midnight Sandwich – actually a variation of the Cuban – prepared with pork, chicken, asparagus and housemade pickle on

melt-in-your-mouth ciabatta. He paired it with a tasty Lagunitas DogTown pale ale. Available on draft, it was served in a wide-mouth jar for a fun presentation. The accompanying french fries are my favorite kind: thin and crispy, served hot and fresh. The perfect guilty pleasure was prepared with a sprinkle of herbs. The family at a neighboring table

selected what was obviously a familiar hit: a double order of the truffle-infused fries. From the small plate menu, I picked the beef sliders on pretzel bun, expecting a burger, but the trio turned out to be sliced beef, nicely flavored by grilled sweet red peppers and caramelized onions, and given a little zing with horseradish cream and a dip into the generous serv-

ing of au jus. Another guilty pleasure was dipping the last of the french bread. Too full for dessert, we sadly had to forgo our knowledgeable server’s recommendations: an in-house prepared strudel, a brownie specialty, and the creme brulee she called “fantastic,” whose flavor changes weekly. Displayed around the room are framed photographs of Western Springs taken by the owner’s daughter, Mécénat’s manager. Hand-stenciling and faux stone designs on walls conjure a bistro getaway, and a divider separates the dining room from the bar, with live music featured weekends. In homage to the wines, sleek sconces mimic the curve of magnum bottles.

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com LEMONT — Talking to Rylie Jay, one could get the impression that the Lemont shortstop is off to a slow start this spring. Admittedly tough on herself, the sophomore believes there is room for improvement. And that can only be a scary thought for opposing pitchers considering Jay was hitting .610 (25-for-41) with five home runs heading into this week. “I am hard on myself,” said Jay. “I know my goals for this year and I get frustrated because I know what I’m doing wrong. I’m hitting OK but I want to do better. I’m getting there.” While agreeing that Jay expects a lot from herself, Lemont head coach Chris Traina says she is a joy to coach. “Rylie is a great kid,” Traina said. “She loves the game and wants to keep getting better and better at it. She is never satisfied. “She has the athletic ability and the talent but how she works and her wanting to get better and better, that is what is impressive.” Having already driven in 26 runs while scoring 22 times, Jay’s strong start has coincided with the team’s, as the Indians won 10 of their first 12 games. “I think we are doing really well,” she said. “We are hitting very well, defensively, our infield and outfield defense is solid and we have really good pitching.” A year ago, Jay didn’t quite know what to expect from her first season of high school

By the numbers Rylie Jay’s stats entering this week: .610: Batting average 5: Home runs 26: RBIs

softball. Her goal was to make the varsity and anything after that was icing on the cake. She ended up hitting .435 with five homers and 46 RBIs while garnering all-conference and all-state honors. “I was actually not looking to start,” said Jay, who has played travel softball with the Lemont Rockers. “I was very humble and quiet and I looked up to the seniors a lot. I was just trying to get into a groove and I got there. It was fun and a great experience.” This spring, she feels even more confident and comfortable and looks at herself as a bit of a mentor for current freshmen Maddy Vermejan and Anna Smagacz. “I’m trying to be a role model for our freshmen even though I’m only one year older,” she said. The Indians have just four seniors on the roster, which, according to Jay, might cause some teams to look past them. “I think having a young team, other teams might look down on us,” said Jay, who also played soccer and basketball growing up. “But even though we have a young team, we have a lot of good athletes. We don’t feel like we are young, we think we are on the same level with the other teams and that we can compete against them.”

League-leading Indians swat 28 hits in two wins By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com LEMONT — The Lemont baseball team has found one positive with the lousy weather that has wreaked havoc on the 2013 schedule. More time spent hitting. Stuck in the gym on many afternoons due to the rain and cold, more focus has been put on the offensive side of the game. “We are working hard at it,” said Lemont coach Brian Storako. “When you are stuck inside, that’s really all you can do. There are only so many ground balls you can take on a fieldhouse floor. So we are hitting a lot and our pitchers are throwing live a lot.” The results have been staggering for the Indians. Lemont (9-3 overall, 8-0 South Suburban Conference) knocked out 16 hits in Monday’s 16-5 win over TF North, with the squad jumping out to a 9-0 advantage after two innings before adding a single run in the fourth and three apiece in the fifth and seventh frames. Brett Twohill went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored while Matt Kaminski was 2-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs. “We are swinging the bats well,” the coach said. “We are hitting well, from the top to the bottom.”

Big number 55: Runs scored by Lemont’s baseball team in its past four contests heading into Thursday’s scheduled matchup with Oak Lawn. The Indians belted 50 hits during that stretch.

Jake Terrazas notched his second win of the spring on the mound, allowing four hits while striking out five in four innings of work. Kevin Trojak yielded no hits in three innings of relief work. On Saturday, Lemont again reached double-digits hits (12) in a 13-6 victory over Tinley Park. The Indians actually trailed 6-3 after four innings before tallying six runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run double by Terrazas, and four more in the sixth. Mike Wisz led the offense with a 3-for-5 performance, including a pair of doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. Mark Tokarski went 2-for-5 with a triple and three runs scored and Billy Hayes contributed two hits and two RBIs. “Saturday was really the first time we faced adversity where we were able to overcome it,” Storako said. “Credit Tinley Park for coming back and battling us after we beat them earlier in the week. We faltered a bit then came back and stuck with it and eventually our bats woke up.”

Bill Ackerman – backerman@shawmedia.com

Lemont’s Mike Papierski watches his fly ball to the outfield during a game earlier this season.

Jake Latz struck out seven in three and two-thirds innings of work. Joe Sambucci added two and one-third scoreless frames. “That’s been our plan from the beginning, to limit their pitch counts,” Storako said of splitting up the games

pitching-wise. “The meat of the schedule is coming up so we have all these guys who have seen innings and are battle-tested.” After a scheduled game Thursday against Oak Lawn, Lemont is set to play Eisenhower on Friday before

‘Are we really selling mattresses?’ By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com LEMONT — The Lemont baseball program is embarking on a unique fundraising opportunity that will allow its supporters to rest easy. and we decided to give it a try. As off the wall as it sounds, they (Custom Fundraising Solutions) take care of a lot of the stuff. “The guys are excited about it so we will see how it turns out.” According to a Lemont High School press release, all mattresses available will be brand new with their factory warranties. Prices will be set between 30 and 60 percent off of the regular retail cost for a wide

variety of mattress types. Customers can download a flyer from the school’s website, good for $50 off their purchase. “The guys did ask, ‘Are we really selling mattresses?’” Storako said. “We are not doing that, we are just providing an area for the company to sell. Lockport High School had done it in the past and I talked to their coach and he said they were pretty successful with it.”

Convincing win lifts Indians to 6-0 in conference By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com LEMONT — Few opponents have been able to stop Lemont’s girls soccer team this spring. You can now add Mother Nature to the group that has failed. Playing in a steady rain Tuesday afternoon, the Indians still kept up the offensive pressure in a 6-1 victory over Thornton Fractional co-op. The squad improved to a perfect 6-0 in South Suburban Conference action and 7-1-2 overall. Aleksandra Mihailovic led the way with three goals before leaving early in the second half with an undisclosed injury. “She did real good for us,” said Lemont coach Rick Prangen. “She is our best forward and she really scores goals for us.” Kim Jerantowski tallied a goal and three assists for Lemont, which was seeing its first action since an 8-0 decision over Evergreen Park on April 16. “I feel like we are making some steady improvement,” Jerantowski said. “We still have to work on some of the little things but overall, we’ve been pretty strong. We are getting there.” Adding goals were Madelyln Bermele and Lindsey Mazur. “I think we’ve improved a lot since the first game,” Mazur said. “We are coming

The shutout was spoiled with less then 30 seconds remaining as Lemont yielded only its fourth goal of the season.

Undefeated doubles tandem wins tourney title By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com JOLIET — Alex Vasic and Jake Smagacz stayed undefeated on the season as the seniors won the No. 1 doubles title Saturday at the Joliet Township boys tennis tournament. The duo won all three of its matches in straight sets. The Indians finished fourth as a team. The host school claimed top honors while Plainfield South and Joliet Catholic tied for second. Nick Urban finished third at No. 1 singles to improve

to 10-2 on the spring. Fellow sophomore Nathaniel Burner also upped his mark to 10-2 after claiming third in the No. 2 spot. Both Urban and Burner won their third-place matches in straight sets. “I am very proud of the team for having such a successful showing at this tournament,” said Lemont coach Jon DeGuzman. “We see many of the teams that we will eventually face again in the coming weeks at the sectional tournament so it’s good to see where we measure up in terms of playability, skill, and also seeding.”

Having only been truly tested a couple of times this spring, the Indians will see exactly where they stand over the next two weekends. The team is traveling to the Quad Cities for the Moline Invite on Friday and Saturday before hosting its own tournament on May 3-4. In between will be league matches against Rich-

ards April 30 and Argo May 2. “We will find out the next two weeks,” Prangen said. “We open up (the Moline Invite) with Pleasant Valley and they are supposed to be one of the better teams in Iowa. We will see what happens. As a unit, I’m just looking for consistency. We will have to play well to do well.”

KIDZ BUZZ | Jackie Robinson in 1954. LIBRARY OF CONGRESS

J

ack Roosevelt “Jackie” Robinson is one of the most famous baseball players of all time. He is known not just for his incredible playing abilities, but also for his heroism in the face of much hardship. He was born in 1919 to a sharecropping family in Georgia. He spent some time in the Army and learned how to play baseball, then worked his way up through black leagues until he was recruited to play by the Brooklyn Dodgers. On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robin-

son became the irst African-American to play baseball in the modern Major Leagues. During that Opening Day game at Ebbets Field, Robinson, who played for the Dodgers, stepped up to the plate and proved that the small actions of one man could help change the country. Up until this point, baseball had been segregated (only white players were allowed), but Robinson proved that the color barrier could be broken. Robinson’s transition into the game wasn’t easy: he was booed by fans in the stands, and other players

bullied him and were angry at the attention he was gaining. Even his family was threatened. But it wasn’t long before Robinson became a star and a national hero. He was named Rookie of the Year in 1947, league Most Valuable Player in 1949 and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1962. He was also awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. Jackie Robinson was a great athlete and changed baseball, and America, forever with his bravery. — By Anne Raih, More Content Now

DRAWING WITH MARK!

Think about it, write about it Sometimes the greatest changes can come from small actions. For Jackie Robinson, who had been playing sports all his life, stepping up to the plate to hit the ball was something he’d done many times. But April 15, 1947, was different, and by playing in his first Major League game, he would be paving the way for many athletes of all backgrounds. Sometimes, actions do speak louder than words. As Robinson

once said, “Life is not a spectator sport. If you’re going to spend your whole life in the grandstand just watching what goes on, in my opinion, you’re wasting your life.” What do you think would have happened if Robinson had decided not to play another game? What was the importance of Robinson showing up to play, day after day? Write your thoughts about Robinson’s bravery on a piece of paper.
