GENEVA – Dan Pennington is a huge sports fan, especially when it comes to his favorite team, the Chicago White Sox. He saw his first Sox game as a child in 1976, inspiring his lifelong passion for collecting baseball cards and sports memorabilia. Years later, wanting to share his hobby with other avid collectors, Pennington opened his own shop, Me and Dad’s Toys, 720 E. State St., Geneva. For eight years, he has carried a wide array of items related to sports, especially baseball memorabilia. “I probably have 250,000 sports trading cards in the store, with a box from each of the last 40 years,” Pennington said. “The rarest card I have at the moment is a T206 Ty Cobb card that probably retails for between $750 and $1,000,” he said, adding that last summer boasted a big seller for the shop, a golf card signed by Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan that went for around $3,400 on Ebay, he said. A little further north in the heart of St. Charles, Rob Anderson of Anderson’s Coins and Collectibles is selling cards that range in price from 25 cents to $50, making collecting them an affordable hobby for any age. Of course, there are a few sports cards out there that could break anyone’s budget, he said The T206 Honus Wagner card, designed and issued by the American Tobacco Company from 1909-11, is a gem Anderson would love to one day find. It is considered one of the rarest and most expensive baseball cards in the world, thanks to Wagner’s refusal to “play ball” with the tobacco seller, as legend has it. “Honus Wagner didn’t care to have his picture on a pack of cigarettes, so he forced the tobacco companies to remove his card,” said Anderson. Other stories attest it was a fight over compensation that led to the pulling of the card. Either way, only about 57 of those cards are believed to exist today, and one sold at auction for $2.1 million, earlier this month. The baseball card was the highest selling item at the April 5 Goldin Auctions’ showcase in New York, alongside a copy of Alex Rodriquez’s 2009 World Series ring that sold for $50,398, and a signed Derek Jeter bat swung in the 2001 World Series that fetched $37,486. Pennigton and Anderson each will bring part of their own vast collection

Sports trading cards like these likely will be popular items at the “Take Me Out to the Cardshow” sports collectible event sponsored by the Kane County Cougars at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Saturday, April 27.

Dan Pennington, owner of Me and Dad’s Toys in Geneva, has been dealing in sports collectibles for the past eight years, following a lifelong passion that started with his first major league baseball game in 1976. to a new trading card and sports memorabilia event called “Take Me Out to the Card Show” on Saturday, April 27, in Geneva. Hosted by the Kane County Cougars, the public event will be held inside Fifth Third Bank Ballpark’s upper deck. Sports enthusiasts, avid collectors and young fans can peruse the aisles of sports-related items offered by

local hobby shops and sports memorabilia stores. There will be activities, giveaways and programming as well. Kids younger than 12 attend free, and the event helps support Ozzie’s Outreach, the Cougars’ charitable foundation. “It’s about having a good time. Whether there are 1,000 people there,

or 200 people there, it’s going to be a fun day,” said event organizer Dan Campana. “We’re going to give away some great prizes, and there’ll be some great interactions.” Those exchanges could include a meet-and greet-with a well-known pair of Chicago sports personalities. Chicago Blackhawks legend Denis Savard is scheduled to sign autographs from 10 to 11:30 a.m., and former Chicago Cub Randy Hundley will pen his name from noon to 1:30 p.m. Campana’s 8-year-old son, Ryne, may request a couple of those autographs. He’s named for Campana’s baseball hero, Chicago Cubs Hall of Fame-r Ryne Sandberg. “Yep, I won the baby-naming coin toss,” Campana said, laughing. Young Ryne might wear his baseball uniform too, because youth baseball and softball players who show up in their team uniforms will win a special door prize at the event. But for collectors and enthusiasts like Pennigton and Anderson, the most fun part of being a collector is the hunt. “You don’t know if someone will walk in one day with a Honus Wagner card, or what you’ll stumble across,” Anderson said, grinning. “You never know what you’re going to find.”

GET TO KNOW: DAGMAR MCGOWAN

Experienced antiques dealer brings passion home By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva native Dagmar McGowan had no interest in antiques until she purchased her former home in nearby Bartlett. The home once had been a school house in the 1890s, and McGowan wanted to find furniture to match the building’s historic features. Hooked on the hunt, she and husband Harold started selling antiques out of their home twice a week, and then became dealers at an antique warehouse in Naperville. In the 25 years that would follow, the McGowans would make that interest their business, and a daily quest to find old, unique furnishings and historic items for themselves and a steady stream of clients. They brought their quarter-century of experience back to McGowan’s hometown of Geneva in 2012 when they opened their own facility, America’s Treasures Antiques, Furniture and Gifts, at 34 N. Bennett St. Now, they are readying a celebration to mark the first

Nicole Weskerna – nweskerna@shawmedia.com

Geneva native Dagmar McGowan turned a desire to fill her home with period furnishings into a 25-year career as an antiques dealer. Her own store – America’s Treasures Antiques, Furniture and Gifts – marks its first full year of business in Geneva this month. year of business in the city McGowan always has considered her home. Born in Germany, McGowan moved to Geneva in 1965. She attended school in Geneva and met Harold. Her

children were born in Geneva as well, she said. The America’s Treasures store in Geneva has 5,000 square feet of space, and visitors can find such items as a wooden carved bench from

England that harkens back to 1760, and a 200-year-old French Morbeir grandfather clock that came out of a monastery. “You just wish sometimes the pieces could talk to you

about where they’ve been before you got them,” she said. McGowan rents her space among 15 local dealers, and each offers something unique and different to the store’s clients. One dealer, for example, specializes in glassware and pottery. Another offers fine art. Classic toys, chandeliers and other lighting also are available. “When a piece sells, we fill [the space] almost immediately,” she said. But McGowan is not an antique “purist,” and not everything she collects, or sells, is decades old. If a nice piece of furniture comes in to the store, but it’s not necessarily an antique, McGowan said she often sees the treasure it could be. With her own artistic flair, she will create “shabby chic” furniture from such pieces, with scuffed paint and worn details to make them look older than their years, she said. McGowan also has a partnership with a local painter who can customize pieces for buyers, should they choose. “It doesn’t matter if it’s old or not, as long as the quality is there,” she said.

ON WATCH Courtroom volunteers keep eye on victims’ interests By STEPHANIE KOHL There are about 3,000 domestic-violence cases ongoing in Kane County. Three thousand potential local victims of domestic abuses. Three thousand people who likely depend on the help of the court system to keep them safe. But they need not depend solely on the system. A group of local volunteers has made its mission to keep an eye the court process itself, as a “watch dog,” making sure legal proceedings are handled in the best interest those injured by the acts of domestic abuse. Fox Valley Court Watch, established in 2010, works to provide an impartial assessment of the effectiveness with which domestic-violence cases are handled in court, thereby promoting victim safety and abuser accountability. “Historically, there’s been a lot of mystique and mystery and misinformation,” said Jim Kintz of St. Charles, president of the Fox Valley Court Watch board of directors. “This [domestic abuse] is a crime, and it should be prosecuted and judged that way.” Fox Valley Court Watch was formed as an independent, nonprofit organization after several people approached Kintz, then a St. Charles police officer, about domestic-violence cases and how they were handled. Kintz contacted some friends, and they got the group started. “Even before the group was started, people would come to him for help, to ask for advice,” said fellow Court Watch volunteer and board member Roger Palmer of Batavia, who got involved in the effort through his friendship with Kintz. Now retired from the force, Kintz has made Court Watch his full-time passion. He is joined by about 20 volunteers who go to court and observe the process of both proceed-

Volunteers with Fox Valley Court Watch keep a persistent eye on the workings of an often-complicated domestic court process. The group is looking to train more volunteers to aid in the effort for both Kane and Kendall counties.

If you go A training session for new Fox Valley Court Watch volunteers will be offered from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, at the St. Charles Police training room, 211 N. Riverside St. To register visit www.foxvalleycourtwatch.org.

ings and everyone’s behavior in the courtroom. But Kintz needs more help to cover the large number of cases in both Kane and Kendall counties. “[We’re looking for] people who are interested in seeing the criminal justice system treat victims fairly,” he said. Board Member Norm Turner attends court sessions three

or four times each month, depending on the trial. He originally was asked to volunteer because he also is a volunteer at the Community Crisis Center in Elgin, one of the oldest domestic-violence shelters in the state. “What I observe is the process,” Turner said. “I’m a huge person on time management. If time isn’t managed well, it takes a trial longer, and that costs taxpayers money.” Turner said he also observes how knowledgeable all parties are about the case. “I think that a volunteer needs good, strong listening skills,” he said. “Listen to what is said and know the process.” To help prepare new vol-

unteers for their service, periodic training sessions are offered. They include an introduction and overview of the program, descriptions and dynamics of domestic abuse and laws in Illinois, a lesson on court procedures, a presentation on the role of prosecutors and procedures of being a court watcher. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and have an email address and daily email access. Volunteers set their own schedules, but each must commit to a minimum of one halfday session, on a weekday, per month, for at least six months. To further the mentoring relationship between new and experienced volunteers, Fox Valley Court Watch hosts

monthly meetings at 9:30 a.m. the fourth Wednesday of every month at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia. New volunteers are given an opportunity to ask questions at these meetings, address concerns and work through challenges. Volunteers say that while the work of a domestic court “watch dog” is not typically pleasant, it’s tremendously satisfying, because it’s both important and effective. “We have received information that when there are court watchers in the courtrooms, there seems to be a change in the courtrooms,” Kintz said. “It does make a difference to have a court watch in there.”

Island Park in Geneva hit hard by flooding By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Sheavon Lambillotte said Island Park in Geneva was about 75 percent under water as of Tuesday afternoon, five days after heavy rains last week brought flooding throughout the area. The park, which is next to the Fox River, has flooded, undoing some of the smaller improvements made to the park last summer. “I don’t know how extensive it’s going to be, but there will certainly be a lot of refuse cleanup and tree removal,” said Lambillotte, executive director of the Geneva Park District. She said she expects all of the wood chips from the playground to be washed away once the water recedes, and she doesn’t expect the plants from the flower beds to make it, either. Blanketed seating and other landscaping likely will need to be replaced, too, she said. Some erosion has started over and under the new bridge, which will need to be remedied, she added. Lambillotte said it’s the worst flood in Island Park area she can remember since 1999, when she started working with the park district. “I’ve never seen the island completely under water,” she said. Across the river, more than 100 volunteers helped place a sandbag barrier last week between the water and the Herrington Inn & Spa. The effort was successful. “The wall we were racing to build fortunately was never breached,” said Jennifer Piazza, director of sales and mar-

Sandy Bressner – sbressner@shawmedia.com

Island Park in Geneva still is flooded after rain on April 18. keting at the Herrington Inn & Spa. “I strongly feel that if all those people had not been there. ... I think we would have been toast.” She said the building wasn’t structurally damaged from flood water and estimated that the water had receded about 2 feet since April 18. She said the task now is finding a way to remove the sandbags. To thank volunteers, Piazza said the inn and spa is hosting a “celebration of community spirit” from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 25. About a half-inch of rain was expected to fall Tuesday, said Gilbert Sebenste, meteorologist with Northern Illinois University. He said that amount of rain shouldn’t cause more flooding. He said an extra inch or 2 would cause

more flooding problems, however. “The worst of it, by far and away, is over,” he said. He said flooding seemed worse last week than the mid-1990s flood when as much as 19 inches of rain fell over three days. He said last week’s flood came on more quickly, and the ground didn’t have time to absorb as much water. “This flood was not as bad as 1996, but the effects were disproportionately worse because this rain fell over a much shorter period time,” he said. Sebenste said so far this year, 14 inches of rain have fallen, which already is more than half of last year’s total rainfall. Aside from a mix of rain and snow expected Thursday, the next rainfall isn’t predicted until next week.

Mystery novelist sets the scene in Geneva Annie Hansen might be the most mysterious woman in the Tri-Cities. That’s because this wife, mother and small business owner from Batavia spends her limited free time hatching plots and devising schemes for her soon-to-be published mystery novel series. The lives of the characters she’s conjured, from local and national headlines, come to settle in a fictional Geneva, but readers may recognize the shops of Third Street, the eclectic mix of boutiques and baristas, and the homey, walkable avenues. Her book, “Give Me Chocolate,” is her first published novel, which will be released in May. Already at work on the second story in the series, Hansen took a few minutes to chat with Republican managing editor Sherri Dauskurdas about the book, it’s familiar setting and the hobby that’s grown into something more.

FYI ... “Give Me Chocolate” will be sold on www.barnesandnoble.com, www.amazon.com and www. weavingdreamspublishing.com. It will also be sold at Townhouse Books and by request at local bookstores. A book-launch party will be free and open to the public at 1 p.m. May 11 at the Geneva History Center. Hansen will read from “Give Me Chocolate” and sign copies. Provided image

“Give Me Chocolate,” set in Geneva, launches in May and will be available online and at Town House Books in St. Charles. Author Annie Hansen says readers from the area will recognize a variety of popular Third Street locations. Provided photo

Annie Hansen of Batavia has authored her first novel, a mystery set in Geneva, with characters inspired by the Laci Peterson murder.

Sherri Dauskurdas: Why mysteries?

Annie Hansen: I’ve always loved reading mysteries. Growing up, I read all of the Nancy Drew books and watched “Murder She Wrote.” Reading and writing are my two favorite passions. My specialty is “cozy mystery.” It’s a sub-genre of crime fiction where the violence and sex are downplayed. The draw of the mystery is still there, but the focus is more on the community and the characters. This is not like a CSI story where you will see lots of blood and gore. There are murders, but you will only get a quick snapshot of the violence. SD: Why Geneva for this first book? What did the city lend to the story, as a

setting? AH: For me, when I’m writing a story, location always comes first. It’s the driving force that forms the story. When I moved here, I visited Third Street, and The Kelly Clark Mystery Series began to take shape in my mind. In the series, Kelly is trying to start her life over after husband goes to jail for attempting to murder his pregnant mistress. This series was influenced by the

Laci Peterson/Scott Peterson/Amber Frey case from 2001. That particular story has always haunted me. I’ve always wondered, if Laci had survived those horrific events, where would she go? How would she move on with her life? Could she ever trust again? Could she ever love again? And what if she could reunite with her extended family who so obviously loved and adored her? I saw Kelly living on Third Street back in her hometown of Geneva after she was able to escape her marriage. Kelly will have to live forever with the stigma of once being married to a violent man who is now incarcerated and due for release at some point in the

future. Kelly’s sister is the owner of a specialty dessert store, Chocolate Love, in downtown Geneva and allows Kelly to live in the apartment above the store rent free while she’s trying to get back on her feet. I thought Third Street would be a great place for Kelly to try and blend in, yet also be constantly exposed to the community. SD: Will local readers be able to find local references in the text? AH: Readers will definitely be able to spot local venues. The book is a combination of real-life locations mixed with ones I’ve created for the story. Though, even the imaginary locations still may be influenced by actual stores on Third Street. [Characters] will be doing lots of activities together, such as going out to dinner, running on the Fox, taking yoga classes. I

plan to make the reoccurring characters and the Tri-Cities the focus of the story-line. When I moved to this area, I fell in love with the community, The Fox River, Geneva’s Third Street and The Historic Districts of Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles. I’m hoping the readers will too. SD: Is it a mystery series in which the lead characters are the same but each book is separate and complete, as is the case of Nancy Drew? Or does the story, itself, continue through the books? AH: Each book will have a definite wrap-up for the murder mystery at hand. Kelly and her sister, Nikki, fall into becoming somewhat of an investigative team to help the police try and solve the murder in each book. So for the smaller mystery, it’ll wrap up at the end of each book. However, Kelly’s back story, what I like to call the “big mystery,” and clues about how her past will affect her future will be woven into each book. I’ll be dropping little breadcrumbs in each book to wind you through the whole story of who Kelly Clark really is. By the end of the series, you’ll have the whole picture.

GENEVA – Geneva softball coach Greg Dierks lugged the memory of a blown, late lead against Waubsonsie Valley last year into Saturday’s latest meeting with the Warriors. In last year’s game, the Warriors rallied to a win thanks to some wellplaced, bloop hits in the seventh inning. “That one bugged me until today,” Dierks said. “Now I’ve got a new one.” While Saturday’s 5-4 loss to the Warriors represented progress relative to how the Vikings have played lately, it still was bothersome, especially considering how well the Vikings played most of the game. Geneva (3-9, 1-6 UEC River) was coming off a 15-0 embarrassment against Metea Valley its last time out. “I told them afterwards [Saturday] that we have to find some confidence out of the fact that we did so many things well today and carry that over, and just keep working through the things that didn’t go well for us,” Dierks said. Geneva led Waubonsie (11-2, 6-1 UEC Valley), 4-2, with two outs and nobody on base for the Warriors in the top of the sixth inning when defensive disaster struck. On consecutive plays, Vikings pitcher Haley Orwig induced ground balls to third base, both of which Vikings third baseman Kirsten Searcy fielded cleanly. But, on both occasions, first baseman Jordyn Schmidt was unable to snag Searcy’s seemingly on-target pegs, prolonging the inning. The Warriors made the Vikings pay. With runners at second and third, Waubonsie junior Melaina Koulos smacked a two-run single to right field, and took second base when the ball was mishandled in the outfield. Senior Erin Hohman then singled to left field to score what turned out to be the winning run. The Vikings rallied from a 2-0 hole by scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth off Warriors starter

Jordan Kurth. Geneva center fielder Bridget Weitzel started the inning with a double and freshman Emily Plocinski, sophomore Madison Keith and junior Jenelle Reilly added hits as part of the outburst. The Vikings’ mid-game momentum arguably started with the final play of the top of the fourth, when a strong throw from Keith in left field to Reilly behind the plate beat Waubonsie’s Meghan Grannan, who was attempting to score on a sacrifice fly. “I wasn’t out that far so I knew it was a girl that I could get and, in my mind, as soon as I caught it, I knew she was going to take off,” Keith said. The Warriors also encountered offensive frustration in the top of the third, when leadoff hitter Amanda Lack’s drive to left-center field bounced off the very top of the wall back onto the outfield. Lack ended up being stranded. It seemed like it might be that kind of day for Warriors coach Aly Kelley’s team. “We had Thursday and Friday off due to flooding at the school so we weren’t able to go in and practice or use any of the facilities because they were under water,” Kelley said. “School was even canceled for them so they weren’t there at all. Mentally, today, we came out dragging a little bit but regardless of that, no excuses.” Orwig struck out four, walked none and steered clear of a big inning until the three unearned runs scored in the sixth. “That was definitely her best outing of the year,” Dierks said. “She was mixing up her speeds well and she had them off balance a lot.” Considering the struggles the Vikings have had lately, Saturday certainly constituted improvement. “Definitely progress,” Keith said. “I think a huge thing today was the attitude was there. We had a good attitude today. Everybody was here to play, we all wanted to play for each other, and that definitely helps contribute to close games like this because [Waubonsie] was definitely a good team.”

New golf season, new fresh look for Pottawatomie Spring is definitely the time of new beginnings, and nowhere is that more obvious than at the recently remodeled and upgraded pro shop at the park district’s award-winning Pottawatomie Golf Course. Gone are the dark wooden cases which once contained clothing and equipment. In their place a r e b r i g h t , Erika open-slat walls Young where merchandise from shirts to jackets, shoes to hats is placed within easy reach. The dazzling array of Pottawatomie Golf Course logo wear — along with clothing by Footjoy and Nike, Titleist balls and gloves, and Datrek pull carts and bags — provides everything a golfer could need for a day’s outing. The same goes for the customer service area, where

the old wood countertop and cabinetry has been enlarged and replaced by a gleaming, sleek glass countertop, as well as food and beverage service area. A big-screen TV draws visitors to the expanded café area. News, sports and talk shows not your thing? Enjoy enticing views from the shop’s outdoor patio, where umbrella tables invite golfers to relax and relive their best shots after a round. Nestled behind the pro shop’s stunning stone fireplace, sets of Tour Edge men’s, women’s and seniors’ clubs are on display, and golfers contemplating changing or upgrading their equipment can get expert advise on the proper fit and grips. Clubs can be taken “out for a spin” on the course prior to purchase to make sure they’re a perfect match. The remodeling project began in January, according to Ron Skubisz, golf course pro and manager. From con-

cept to completion, the project was a team effort, and Skubisz gives kudos to Denise Gillett-Parchert, golf course superintendent, and Randy Braun, facilities manager. Even the pro shop’s artwork has a park district connection. Visitors’ attention immediately is drawn to a striking monochromatic painting based on the 15-foot bronze statue, “Ekwabet,” which stands just downriver from the golf course. This representation of a member of the Native American tribe that first settled the area was painted especially for the remodeled pro shop by park district employee Bill Griffiths. Along with imagery from the course’s nationally-recognized, Audubon-certified natural setting, Griffiths pays homage to the area’s original settlers and the course’s designer, Robert Trent Jones. The remodeling project embodies the esteem in which Pottawatomie Golf Course is

people care more about their course. They truly love this place.”

Cougars can’t hold on to lead against Peoria By VINNIE DUBER editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Despite another strong outing by a starting pitcher and an early fourrun lead, the Kane County Cougars bullpen couldn’t close the deal Monday. Cougars starter Michael Heecsh went six innings and allowed just two runs against the visiting Peoria Chiefs, but the Chiefs tagged the Kane County bullpen for five runs in the top of the seventh and held on to hand the Cougars a 9-6 defeat at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Heesch turned in a solid performance for the second time in three starts and bounced back nicely from a rough outing last time out. The left-hander struck out five and lowered his ERA to 3.21 on the season. He yielded to Brian Smith to start the seventh, but the reliever had a nightmarish afternoon, facing eight batters, retiring

only two and giving up five runs. When Heesch left, the Cougars led 5-2. But when Matt Iannazzo – the seventh inning’s second relief pitcher – finally ended the inning, it was a 7-5 Peoria advantage. Only one of the runs Smith surrendered in the seventh was earned thanks to an error, but the damage speaks for itself. Iannazzo continued the trend, walking the first two batters he faced. The first free pass loaded the bases, and the second forced in a run. “In this league and lower levels, if you throw strikes and catch the ball, usually you’re in pretty good shape,” Cougars manager Mark Johnson said. “[If] they hit it out of the park, they hit it out of the park, but we have to throw strikes. ... You’ve got to make them put it in play, especially at this level. You can’t give them too much credit. For whatever reason, we just couldn’t get it over the plate.”

Cougars first baseman Dan Vogelbach hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to pull the Cougars within one, but the Chiefs scored a pair of insurance runs in the ninth off Iannazzo to cement their win. The bullpen erased a good day for Heesch, the latest in a recent string of solid outings by Cougars starting pitchers. Heesch credits the rotation’s recent success to more consistency in the schedule. “With all the rainouts and everything, we’re kind of getting back into a rotation, so we’ll see this time

training early on. It’s nice in the middle of the season but not early on when you’re trying to establish a rhythm. But I think we’ve handled it pretty well as a staff.”
