Brett Slapke of McHenry uses the newspaper, Internet, trends and statistics to fill out multiple college basketball brackets. Slapke has been filling out brackets since he was a kid. This year his favorites are Georgetown and Indiana.
Picking winners is a delicate balance of luck, preparedness By SHAWN SHINNEMAN sshinneman@shawmedia.com For Brett Slapke – and for many – March isn’t a bad time to be alive. His birthday lands in the middle of the month. St. Patrick’s Day isn’t long after. The weather – usually – starts to turn around. And, probably most importantly, the NCAA basketball season culminates in a three-week frenzy of Cinderella stories and busted brackets, 20-year-olds deciding
the wagers, work output and general happiness of those two or three times older. It is March Madness. And it is here. “I’ve been a sports fan my whole life,” said Slapke, 34, of McHenry. “March Madness has always been my favorite time of the year.” Basketball heads and novices alike get a taste of the tournament tonight, as four teams compete in play-in games to make the final 64team bracket. The same setup
happens Wednesday. On Thursday, Valparaiso and Michigan State kick off 12 straight hours of basketball at 11:15 a.m. There’s another 12 hours Friday. The weekend is packed, too. “I think people love the excitement of the underdog story,” Slapke said. “Either they’re rooting for their team, or if they’re not following a team, they’re rooting for the underdog.”

Judge says Jenner, Sivertsen can remain on April 9 ballots By SARAH SUTSCHEK ssutschek@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – After a court challenge, a judge ruled Monday that two candidates for seats on the McHenry County College board can remain on the April 9 ballot. Chris Jenner and Erik Sivertsen are among a field of nine hopefuls for the college board, but issues arose because they also both were running for their local elementary school boards. Last week, McHenry County Clerk Katherine Schultz filed court documents questioning “compatibility” in holding both offices. But Judge Thomas A. Meyer said there was nothing in the statute that made them inherently incompatible. “I’m not getting from the language that there is an ab-

solute bar from preventing someone from running for both offices,” he said. State law says that if a school board member is elected or appointed to a community college board, he can serve the remainder of the term, but once that school board term expires, cannot hold both offices. Sivertsen is seeking a seat on the McHenry District 15 board. He said he already had considered compatibility issues with simultaneously running for the college board but found none.

Judge: Deputy and wife lied about blog Seipler ordered to pay legal fees By SARAH SUTSCHEK ssutschek@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – A deputy and his wife lied under oath as part of a federal lawsuit against the McHenry County sheriff, and as a sanction against them, they will have to pay a substantial amount of the sheriff’s legal bills, a judge ruled. U.S. District Judge Frederick J. Kapala stopped short of tossing Zane Seipler’s case in its entirety, however. Seipler is suing Sheriff Keith Nygren, alleging that his civil rights were violated when he was fired out of retaliation for blowing the whistle on racial profiling. Nygren has said Seipler was

After arbitration and a series of rulings in Seipler’s favor, Nygren was forced to give Seipler his job back about a year ago.
