OUT AND ABOUT Holmstad’s Home Store plans grand reopening BATAVIA – The Holmstad’s Home Store is having its grand reopening event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the recently renovated “B” building at 700 W. Fabyan Parkway.

It will be open during the open house for the new auditorium from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The Home Store sells gently used furniture, glassware, collectibles and miscellaneous items donated by residents and their families at The Holmstad.

Aaron Carter at River Rockhouse ST. CHARLES – River Rockhouse will play host to pop star Aaron Carter on Friday. Carter has won multiple awards over his 14-year career including TEEN Choice Awards, Kids Choice Awards, and RTL Young Artist of the Year Award. In addition to music, he has also established himself as an actor in film, television and on Broadway.

In 2009, Carter joined the season 9 cast of “Dancing With The Stars.” He and his dance partner Karina Smirnoff finished fifth.

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – After decades of walking Kane County’s woodlands, Mary Ochenslager can identify the species of a tree simply by looking at it.

But even an experienced naturalist like Ochenslager, who has worked in the past for the St. Charles Park District and now conducts programs on behalf of the Sugar Grove Park District, must at times look closer.

And Ochenslager said one of her favorite activities is helping other people learn those same kinds of skills.

“It’s just something I feel right here, in my gut,” Ochenslager said, thumping a clenched fist against her abdomen. “I think all of this is just so wonderful, and I want

everyone else to see how wonderful it is, too.”

Ochenslager annually teaches anyone interested about trees, flowers, birds and other natural facets of Kane County.

Sunday, despite the midMarch cold, Ochenslager took a small group of students along the edge of the woods at Bliss Woods Forest Preserve in Sugar Grove, teaching the basics of identifying trees in the winter.

She noted that many people often can correctly identify trees by their leaves.

But she said many of those same people may struggle to tell one deciduous tree from another during the months when the leaves have fallen.

Ochenslager walked her students through the process of using twigs, buds, bark and fallen leaves and seeds to identify various local species,

including white ash, various oaks, black walnut and butternut hickory.

“Some people think they can come to a class like this, and leave knowing how to identify any tree,” Ochenslager said. “There’s more to it than that.

“But anyone who comes to this class can leave knowing the tools that can help them identify any tree.”

Janet Oncken of Sugar Grove said she attended the class to continue her own self-education on the local forests, so she can pass on the knowledge to her grandchildren and other area children.

“I like nature, a lot,” said Oncken, a retired teacher. “I know I can learn from Mary, and I want to find a way to use that to guide children on things like this.”

Downtown Geneva gas station burglarized

By JONATHAN BILYK jbilyk@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Police are investigating the apparent smash-and-grab burglary of a gas station near Geneva’s Metra station.

Geneva police said someone apparently smashed a glass window at the Citgo gas station and convenience store

in the 600 block of South First Street (Route 31).

Police said the incident is believed to have occurred in the early-morning hours before 5 a.m. Friday.

Police said a cash register containing “an unknown amount of cash” was taken from the store at that time.

The burglary was discovered by store employees, who

called police to the scene shortly before 6 a.m. Friday.

Geneva Police Cmdr. Julie Nash said a full report on the incident has not yet been completed, but was due to be completed by midday today.

The station was open for business throughout the weekend. By midday Sunday, the store showed no visible signs of damage from the incident.

CELEBRATION DAY St. Charles marks St. Patrick’s Day with parade

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The streets of downtown St. Charles were flooded with green Saturday afternoon as hundreds of people gathered to watch the annual St. Patrick’s Parade and celebrate Irish heritage.

About 75 entrants passed crowds along Main Street from Sixth Street to Fourth Avenue in the hourlong parade. Many who were gathered prepared sit in 30-degree temperatures by bringing along blankets, and some brought along umbrellas or rain coats, just in case.

Aside from the occasional flurry of snow, the precipitation held off. Nick and Stephanie Stravropoulos of St. Charles and their two daughters, Tessa, 5, and Lily, 9, braved the cold to carry on the 10-year family tradition of watching the St. Patrick’s

Parade.

“We look forward to it every year,” said Stephanie Stravropoulos, adding that the St. Charles North marching band was her favorite parade entry.

Nick Stravropoulos said their relatives from out of town usually join them for the parade, but didn’t make it this year. He said St. Patrick’s Day is for celebrating the “little Irish” that runs in their family.

Many in attendance wore green or waved Irish flags.

Some had a more boisterous wardrobe, wearing oversized green sunglasses, tall green hats, fake beards and mustaches and green wigs and feather boas.

Parade entries included youth organizations such as the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, along with businesses, churches, political candidates, sports teams, high school bands and pets.

Several bagpipe bands marched in the parade, drawing cheers and applause from crowds.

Beverly resident Bernadette Glavin-O’Pater said the bagpipers were her favorite part. Dan Glavin-O’Pater and their son, Danny, 6, watched the parade, too, and all three wore green to celebrate their Irish heritage.

Bernadette Glavin-O’Pater wore a pair of oversized sunglasses shaped like shamrocks along with a green feather boa, and Danny wore several green-beaded necklaces.

“We’re Irish, and it’s fun,” she said.

Bernadette Glavin-O’Pater said her family attends the parade each year in St. Charles, along with several other St. Patrick’s Day parades in the Chicago area.

She summed up Saturday’s parade in one word – “excellent.”

Vikings drop season opener

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com AURORA – The Geneva girls soccer team was supposed to open its season at Wheaton Academy this week but that match was scrapped because of shaky field conditions.

That left the Vikings in the unenviable position of starting off against traditional powerhouse Waubonsie Valley. Geneva struck first and played a decent match but dropped its season opener, 2-1, in Saturday afternoon’s Upstate Eight Conference crossover.

“We’ve hardly been outside,” Geneva coach Megan Owens said. “Nobody wants to open up their season with Waubonsie. It’s a tough opener, and they’ve already had a game.”

Given those circumstances, it was especially encouraging for the Vikings when sophomore defender Megan Kozlow’s bending corner kick made it through traffic and into the net to give the Vikings a 1-0 advantage midway through the first half.

“She’s got a nice, left-footed inswinging cross,” Owens said of Ko-

zlow. “She did a great job with that.”

The Vikings retained that lead through halftime but Waubonsie’s Kristen Dodson scored a pair of goals within the first 12 minutes of the second half for the afternoon’s final tallies.

Until that point, it had been a dynamite debut for Geneva junior goalkeeper Sam Hauser.

Despite the Warriors’ pair of second half scores, Owens still came away impressed by Hauser, who started the match on strong footing by punching a dangerous, floating shot over the crossbar in the early going.

“She made some really, really nice saves, and it’s her first year on varsity,” Owens said. “We’ve been indoors so we didn’t know what to expect so she was a very pleasant surprise. She did a great job for us.”

Geneva was unable to sustain offensive pressure in the second half, although forward Amanda Lulek and midfielder/defender Annie Waldoch each mustered solid shots on goal that would have tied the score at 2.

While several key pieces return from last year’s conference champion team, the Vikings have some retooling to do, especially in the midfield.

“I think we gave a solid performance,” Owens said. “I didn’t see any big issues. I think we were very solid in goal. It’s just getting used to playing with new teammates. It’s a hard game. You couldn’t make a lot of adjustments. They put a lot of pressure on you, but I saw a lot of good things.”

The match, played on a chilly afternoon in front of a sparse crowd, was moved to Metea Valley’s turf field.

“Ours is a flat soccer field so ours isn’t going to get touched until probably spring break,” Waubonsie Valley coach Julie Bergstom said. “It is what it is. Ours right now, I don’t even think has the goals up. I mean, they just took the plastic off. We’re not even near [being able to use it].”

The Warriors (1-1) dropped their season opener against Lyons before prevailing against the Vikings.

“I think we’re playing some good soccer considering it’s March,” Bergstom said.

This crummy weather will run its course soon enough, and it’ll be time for the area’s spring athletes to do their thing, be it inside or out.

Sly can’t wait because you can always count on schools around the Tri-Cities to field some excellent teams this time of year.

In girls soccer alone, you had St. Charles North take second in Class 3A last year and St. Francis win it all in 2A, and both of those teams return plenty of talent from those groups.

Add in quality programs like Geneva and St. Charles East, and we’re guaranteed to have some slick play on the pitch.

Softball-wise, St. Charles North and Kaneland look like they could be headed for big years, and look out for Burlington Central and St. Francis because they’ve got big-time pitchers, and you know what that means in the game of softball.

Expecting another awesome Upstate Eight Conference River race in baseball, which is pretty much the norm since the conference came to be. Seems like it always comes down to the end, and that’ll probably be the case again if teams can figure out a way to scratch out some Ws against Geneva’s lights-out pitching staff. You can’t ever count out St. Charles East or St. Charles North baseball, and Batavia should be more than respectable, as well.

Can’t forget about track. Based on the UEC girls indoor meet, look out for the Saints this season. Wow, what a performance.

It’s easy for sports to get lost in the shuffle in the chaotic spring (boys volleyball and boys tennis and water polo and badminton, oh my), but there’s never a shortage of stuff going on this time of year. And, in Sly’s book, that’s a beautiful thing.

Feeney credited his focus before the meet with allowing him to have the energy to compete at a high level in multiple events.

Batavia (sixth place), Geneva (seventh place) and St. Charles East also competed.

East finished in an eighthplace tie with South Elgin.

Overall, Bartlett captured eight top-3 finishes, including first place in the 800 and 55 hurdles by Connor Rachford and Alex Bailey, respectively.

Bailey said his work on technique in practice allowed him to take the 55 hurdles indoor title.

“I felt really good coming into this meet – me and my coaches worked a lot on dragging my trail leg through [the

jump] so it could drop my time,” Bailey said. “My preliminary time, … I wasn’t too happy with that, but I went back and talked to my coaches. We got to the basics and got some of the little things to help me for my next run.”

Overall, defending state champion Lake Park finished in first place with 137.5 points and captured the Upstate Eight Indoor Conference Championship.

The Lancers topped last year’s indoor champions Neuqua Valley by 22½ points as the Wildcats finished second overall.

As Bartlett prepares for outdoor season, Kramer said this finish should give his athletes confidence to keeping growing as a team.

“We’re seeing a lot of the teams that we see at our sectional here, so it’s a good measure of where we’re at, at the halfway point of the season,” Kramer said. “Anytime you can get these kids more confident, boosting their self-esteem, it’s just going to make them work harder and having the success we did today bodes real well for us heading into outdoor [season].”

BATAVIA – With three events left in Saturday’s Upstate Eight Conference Boys Indoor Track Meet, Bartlett was 6½ points ahead of St. Charles North and minutes from its best finish in school history.

Coming into the meet, Hawks coach Eric Kramer said the team’s goal was to finish better than fourth, which is the highest any Bartlett team has finished in an indoor or outdoor meet.

The Hawks secured third place overall after a third place finish in the 4x400-meter relay.

The Bartlett relay team won its heat with a time of 3:34.56, which is a school record. The team ultimately finished behind Neuqua Valley and St. Charles North, with times of 3:32.10 and 3:32.43, respectively.

Heading into the final race, Kramer made sure his runners knew what was on the line.

“Coaches always try to find a little extra motivation and throw it their way. We have experienced runners, they understand what that last relay was about. It’s one of the most exciting races that you can watch at a track meet,” Kramer said.

St. Charles North finished fourth overall with 66½ points, the top finish among the Tri-Cities contingent.

The North Stars finished with six top-3 finishes including first place finishes in the 400 by Zach Kirby and the 4x200 relay team. Sprinter Jack Feeney was one of the top point scorers for the North Stars; Feeney placed third in the 200 and was a member of the 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams.

Feeney was visibly drained after his last run and said he was adjusting to an increased workload after

But before we move on, here is one more declarer technique that requires careful entry handling. How should South play in four hearts after West leads the club king?

The auction followed a predictable path.

South has four losers: two diamonds and two clubs. He has only nine top tricks: two spades, six hearts and one club. The only chance for an extra winner is to establish dummy’s spades. But if that suit is splitting 4-2, as it rates to do, declarer will need three dummy entries: two for ruffing spades in his hand and one to return to the dummy to cash the 13th spade. What are those entries?

They must be one spade and two hearts. Why not two spades?

Because an entry counts only if South can immediately trump a spade in his hand.

This is the best line: Win the first trick with the club ace, cash the heart king, play off dummy’s top spades, and ruff a spade high in hand so that the unfriendly West cannot overruff. Continue with a low heart to dummy’s nine, ruff another spade high, and play a trump to dummy’s ace (removing West’s last heart). Then South can happily cash the spade six and discard one of his minor-suit losers.

That is textbook entry conservation and suit establishment.
