Q & A with the Hearing Doctor Q: My two-year old son is not speaking well yet and seems to ignore us at home. I am concerned that he may not be hearing well. Is he too young to have a hearing test? A: No, he is not too young to be tested. It is true Dr. Terri Lightbody that infants and (630) 580-5777 young children can be much more challenging to test that older children and adults. It is very important that a child be evaluated if there are any concerns regarding their hearing ability. A hearing loss can cause many problems with normal development, including but not limited to: learning & language development, slower cognitive functioning, relationship skills and so on. he irst three years of life are critical for developing speech and language skills. During this period, the brain is building nerve pathways that are necessary for understanding speech sounds and all other incoming auditory
information. If a child is not hearing language properly due to a hearing loss, it is highly probable that they will have more diiculty developing normal speech and language skills. It is not unusual for us to identify luid in the middle ear that may have been previously undetected, therefore resulting in a blockage in their hearing. Middle ear luid frequently results is otitis media (middle ear infection). Symptoms of otitis media include ear stuiness, ear pain and a temperature. Occassionally, I will also ind an excessive amount of cerumen (ear wax) that is fully blocking a child’s small ear canal and not allow the sound to travel through the ear canal properly. It is important to note that if a child does have cerumen blocking the ear canal, the parents cannot clean this out due to the small size of the canal. here is danger in pushing the cerumen into the ear canal further and/or hurting the child if they move suddenly while there is an object in their ear. It is highly recommended to have a child’s hearing tested even if there is a slight question about their hearing ability. It is better to be safe that sorry.
