DeKalb library officials seek loan By DAVID THOMAS dthomas@shawmedia.com DeKALB – In order to meet a looming June 30 deadline, the DeKalb Public Library will borrow $6 million from a private bank as a part of its fundraising strategy for its planned expansion. Library officials must raise

cussions with Castle Bank, National Bank & Trust, and Resource Bank, but no specific dollar amounts have been agreed on. “We have gone to the banks to ask them if they will provide us with that much money so we can launch our private donation campaign,” Neher said. “It appears they are will-

$15.5 million by June 30 so they can take advantage of an $8.5 million library construction grant they were awarded in December by the State of Illinois. The library would repay the loan with private donations made to the expansion within the next three years. Board President Clark Neher said they are in dis-

ing to do that.” Also on Thursday, Library Director Dee Coover said she still was gathering information on the matter. “I am working on it, but I am not going to comment at this time,” Coover said. She added that she is speaking with an “interested party” Monday about the loan.

DeKalb VOCAL EXPRESSION expecting heaviest snowfall By JEFF ENGELHARDT jengelhardt@shawmedia.com DeKALB – If Dan Turner’s wish came true, he would be just finishing up a round of snow plowing this morning. Turner, owner of Kelly & Dan’s Lawn Care and Snow Removal in DeKalb, was preparing his equipment and crew Thursday for the up to 5 inches of snow he was expecting to fall overnight. After a relatively mild winter, Turner said he would not mind late-night work. “I’m pretty well set, but it’s sure nice to have that little extra income,” Turner said. “If it snows, I got work. If it doesn’t, I don’t, but I’m not out anything.” today’s Chances are Turner found some forecast work late Thursday and today as a severe snowstorm that dumped more than a foot of snow in some • Freezing Midwestern states tapered off as rain throughit entered Illinois. The University of Missouri canceled classes for one of the few times in its 174-year history. Northern Illinois University meteorologist Gilbert Sebenste expected about 5 inches of snow by early today, potentially the highest snowfall of the winter. DeKalb received 4.2 inches of snow Feb. 7. “This will not be the blizzard of 2011,” Sebenste said. “But it will create some slippery and icy conditions.” DeKalb area residents also can expect freezing rain throughout the day and a light snow between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. today, Sebenste said. The next storm is expected Monday or Tuesday, but it is too early to tell if it will be freezing rain or snow. T.J. Moore, director of public works for DeKalb, said city staff was relieved forecasts changed from a foot of snow to the 3- to 5-inch range. The expected freezing rain at the end of the storm could freeze over storm inlets and cause flooding, he said. – The Associated Press

Hayes, a member of the 2012 DeKalb High School a cappella group that went to the national championship in New York City, is hoping to lead Enharmonic Fusion to the big stage once more as a senior leader. Hayes and the 21 other members of Enharmonic Fusion hope to defeat five other high school a cappella groups at 7 p.m. Saturday in the DeKalb High School Auditorium in a regional competition for one of 10 spots in the national competition in New York. “We work the whole year for this one competition,” Hayes said. “It’s our make-orbreak moment.” The vocalists will have 12 minutes to impress the judges

Additional awards are given for categories such as best arrangement, soloist and vocal percussion. This year the group pre-

pared three songs for the 12minute performance, and although the group would not divulge the names of the tunes, Hayes said they are modern, high-energy songs. After a string of success

that included trips to New York in 2012 and ’10 as well as appearances from the all-boys group, Fly Check, in ’07 and ’08, Enharmonic Fusion enters this competition with a lot of new faces.
