VINTAGE MEETS MODERN Mother, daughter promote local artists at D Christine’s in Marengo By JOSEPH BUSTOS jbustos@shawmedia.com MARENGO — On top of repurposed barn doors, or pickup slats made into a kitchen island, are locally made candles, purses, dishes, coffee mugs and earrings — among other things. The items for sale and the furniture they sit on are made by local artists with local materials, which is the staple of D Christine’s. Christine Evitts, and her daughter, Danielle, opened D Christine’s in October. The 49-year-old Marengo resident loves modern art. The 23-year-old daughter lives in Hampshire and is a photographer who enjoys vintage art. “We promote local artists in the area,” Christine said. “We focus on the art here. We live in a community that has great, talented people.” About 20 artists have items for sale in the 1,200-squarefoot shop. Most of the items take anywhere from a day to a week to make. There are soaps, candles, purses, pottery and furniture made by local artists, from mainly Marengo, Union, Harvard, Woodstock, and Rockford. “We try not to go too far, we try to mainly focus here,” Christine said. “A lot of their materials come locally, also.” On Sundays and Mondays the shop is closed as the Evitts look for artists, treasures and whatever they can find for their shop. The mother and daughter insist the materials artists use come from American made material, such as wool for wool items coming from local farms. “That’s very important to us,” Christine said. “We wanted things you can’t find at a big store,” Danielle added. “Nothing in a retail concept that is mass produced.

Handcrafted candles are displayed at D Christine’s in Marengo. We’re trying to keep it small and shop locally.” They want artists’ materials to come from northern

Illinois or from just over the border in Wisconsin. “Our first question ... when people bring things in, is

‘where did you get your materials from?’” Chrstine said. “We want to keep everything in our community. The money stays here, and the support stays here,” Christine added. The Evitts want people to know they’re not a craft store, even though their items are handmade. The products are made by artisans. “I’ve always loved galleries, and there’s not enough here,” Danielle said. “I started talking about eventually

opening my own gallery and supporting the local talent and the local artists. .. There are a lot of amateur photographers or painters.” Among the items for sale are ornaments made out of empty eggs with a ribbon and mini flowers attached. They both have made things. Christine’s husband builds furniture. They’re always thrifting. Their current space had been empty for seven years. The spot in the past was a pharmacy, auto parts store, grocery store and a frame shop. Before opening in time for Settlers’ Days, they cleaned, painted and set up their shop in three weeks. They did all the work themselves. “We look forward to being here for a long time,” Christine said. “We’re hoping to grow.”

By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY — Village trustees focused on traffic flow and design changes last Thursday in their first planning meeting with Centegra Health System officials about the proposed $233 million Huntley hospital. The meet-and-greet style meeting allowed trustees and Huntley Plan Commission members to question Centegra Chief Executive Michael Eesley and other officials Jim Dallke — jdallke@shawmedia.com about the look and feel of the Students at Chesterbrook Academy in Lakewood deliver food Tuesday five-story, 128-bed hospital. to the Grafton Food Pantry. GAINING FOOD FORETHOUGHT Preschool kids donate to pantry By JIM DALLKE jdallke@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY — Lakewood preschool students last Tuesday learned the value of helping the community by delivering food to a local food pantry. Chesterbrook Academy students gathered food over the past two weeks and delivered it to the Grafton Food Pantry in Huntley. The donation was part of the students’ lesson in community service,ChesterbrookPrincipal Sandy Jenner said. “It shows them what being a community helper is, because that’s what we’ve been working on the past few weeks.” The donations come at a critical time for the Grafton Food Pantry, which is experiencing fewer donations in the thick of winter after an influx of food during the holidays. “Donations are kind of lean,” said Harriet Ford, a food pantry board member. “At the end of the year, for tax purposes and because it’s the holidays, everyone’s very into it. This time of year, the demand is still there, but donations are a lot leaner than we would like them

to be.” After the students dropped off their donations, Ford showed them around the facility and explained the food pantry’s function. She said she was thrilled the students were able to see the pantry in person. “It’s wonderful to have the children involved in this,” Ford said. “We have many schools that do drives … but this is the only school that actually comes to visit.” Jenner said taking students to the pantry helps them better understand what it means to help the community. “Bringing them here really gets them to understand what it’s about, where the food is going, and that they’re actually bringing it here and putting it on the shelves,” she said. “Being 4 and 5 years old, they don’t really get it unless they see it.” This was Chesterbrook’s second annual food drive, and the school plans to continue the tradition. GraftonFoodPantry,at11481 Allison Court, is a nonprofit organization that provides food to people in Huntley, Lakewood and parts of Crystal Lake and Algonquin. The pantry accepts perishable and nonperishable food items, as well as household cleaning items, personal grooming items, paper goods and gas gift cards.

the nearby Centegra Health Bridge and ambulatory care mall. “We think it will make a more viable campus and an opportunity for people to really engage in all levels of care, from wellness to acute care,” Eesley said. “It’s a better use of that property.” Plans now call for the 375,000-square-foot hospital to sit between the mall and health bridge, which faces Algonquin Road. The campusstyle design also leaves room for expansion to the south. Village Manager Dave Johnson started the meeting by listing features and amenities of the hospital. It should feature 100 surgical beds, an eight-bed intensive care unit, full-service emergency center and a helipad for critical-need patients.

Trustees focused many of their questions on traffic around the hospital that will serve the growing Huntley area and employ 1,100 people. But they also took time to joke with the Centegra officials. Trustee Harry Leopold playfully volunteered to be a simulated patient to test the emergency helipad. Centegrawillconductatraffic study in coming months to see whether a main entrance, off Haligus Road to the west, is conducive for emergency access to the hospital. Eesley said Centegra likely will send formal architectural designs to the village in the next two months. Officials hope to break ground on the facility in October, nearly a year-and-a-half after a state board approved the Huntley project.

Second grocer coming to Marengo By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com MARENGO — Residents in Marengo soon will have a second option for grocery shopping. The City Council last week unanimously approved a commercial center along east Route 20 that will be anchored by Sullivan’s Foods, which has locations throughout northwestern Illinois. Sullivan’s Foods, with locations scattered throughout northwestern Illinois, will anchor the development with a 31,000-square-foot store that should be open by fall. The store is expected to open in the 31,000-square-foot development by fall and will give Marengo residents a food-buying option other than Wisted’s Super Market, which has operated in the city for decades. The new store will fulfill a campaign promise by Mayor Donald Lockhart, who said he heard from residents about the need for more grocerers. “I have not forgotten that,” Lockhart said. “The store will be beneficial. That’s what the people of Marengo are asking for.” The seven-acre development at Route 20 and Franks Road —

next door to Glo Bowl Fun Center — also sets aside space for a medical center, fast-food restaurant and small retailers. The council delayed a vote on incentives that helped lure Sullivan’s Foods to Marengo. Officials need more time to tweak easements detailed in the agreement, Lockhart said. The incentives deal would entitle the grocer to 100 percent of the city’s share of sales tax collected by the store in 2014, and 75 percent of the sales tax it collects in each of the following four years, ending in 2018. City officials did not have projections of the store’s sales tax dollars. What the commercial development still is lacking is tenants. Developers from Walter Wayne in Rochelle still are negotiating with fast-food chains to occupy 3,000 square feet of restaurant space. They also are talking with three potential tenants for the 8,000-square-foot medical center. Sullivan’s Foods will have about 6,000 square feet attached to its building for small, yet undetermined, retailers. “We are talking to people, but we have nothing signed,” David Diamond, president of Walter Wayne, told city alder-

men. “We have nothing really we want to share yet, since we are in negotiations with several companies.” Construction on secondary developments in the center should start sometime in 2014. In other business, the council vote unanimously to amend the city’s comprehensive plan to project future development along Route 23 to the south and west of Marengo. The changes are partly to entice the Illinois Tollway Authority to help finance a full interchange at Route 23 and Interstate 90. The planning, and the city’s efforts to annex properties all of the way to I-90 drew the ire of some Riley Township residents. Facing city aldermen, the residents expressed concern about Marengo’s ability to deliver services for Riley residents annexed into the city. Afterward, City Manager Gary Boden announced that a delay in a vote and public hearing on annexing 750 acres west of Route 23 and southwest of Pleasant Grove Road. The council will take up the annexation agreement in midMarch, when neighboring annexation deals should be finalized, Boden said.
