Despite increased competition from big box stores and Internet retailers, 2014 and 2015 were two of the best years in Best Vac’s 39-year history.

B

est Vac is one of the oldest and most experienced vacuum stores in the Midwest, serving the cleaning needs of northern Illinois for 39 years.

Originally established in 1977 as a Rug Doctor carpet cleaning rental store, in 1983 the business transformed into the vacuum repair and vacuum retailer we know today — Best Vac. Owner Ron Vohs teamed up with his wife, Kelly, in 1998 to purchase the St. Charles business. Today, Best Vac offers vacuum cleaners from leading manufacturers like Miele, Riccar and SEBO, as well as a full range of parts and accessories for all brands of vacuums. Best Vac operates a full-time, in-house service department and services all brands of vacuums, as well as expanding into home environment products such as air purifiers. The Vohs have built their business with a philosophy of building relationships and helping customers rather than simply selling to them. They focus on solving problems and offering a solution that makes life easier for their customers. Every homeowner has a different cleaning situation — pets, allergies, carpet type, hard floor surfaces, and of course budget. The Vohs and the other experts at Best Vac take the time to demonstrate the features available on a variety of models, showing you how they perform and letting you make direct comparisons between them. The flooring industry has changed dramatically over the

years and it is now imperative to choose the correct vacuum for your home. The wrong vacuum can damage your floors and there are even carpet manufacturers who void their warranty if certain brands of vacuums are used on their products.

Like any business owner, the Vohs have experienced their share of challenges as big box stores and Internet dealers descended on the marketplace, touting cheaper products and quick delivery. But there are no substitutes for experienced and knowledgeable staff who can help you make the best decision for your needs and the opportunity for you to try before you buy. Also, Ron explains that just because they are a small, familyowned business does not mean they are more expensive. In fact, Best Vac sells better products at similar or even lower

“We have not changed a thing. We continue to offer quality products, competitive prices, and we service what we sell,” Ron said. “The effect of people shopping online has impacted local businesses. But I believe the turnaround has begun.”

The Internet is no longer a cheaper option. Internet retailers can no longer absorb paying for free shipping and paying the sales tax on Internet orders, so prices are increasing. Also, a number of companies are not allowing their products to be sold online in order to maintain the integrity of the product. And Best Vac stands behind its products. “A good vacuum is designed to last a long time,” Ron said. “Unlike some newer manufacturers that don’t even make parts for their vacuums, Best Vac supports and services all of the products we sell with our on-site experienced service technicians.” To find your perfect vacuum, visit vacguys.com or take a test drive at 2015 Dean St., Suite 3, in St. Charles.

t Tri-County Stockdale of Joliet, you’ll find everything you need for pets — from the cats and dogs in your living room to horses and goats in your back barn. But this company, which began as a farm supply store, is now a go-to locale for everyday consumers, explains Karen Redman, General Manager at Tri-County Stockdale. “Keeping to our rural roots, we are still selling animal feeds, and grass seeds, and specializing in chickens. We’ve always been in the business of taking care of the land and the animals on it, whether it is farm fields or front yards.” Those chickens Redman speaks of are an area of growing demand in the western suburbs, as more and more residents are taking up the hobby — raising backyard chickens for themselves and reaping the advantages of the eggs they provide.

fter selling their Kane County property, Neil Johnson, managing director of SVN Landmark Commercial Real Estate, asked his Illinois clients what other commercial properties they owned. They mentioned an industrial investment in Arizona that they were ready to sell. “I contacted an SVN colleague in Phoenix,” Johnson said, “and we quickly collaborated to establish the market value and co-list the property.”

“As part of the SVN shared value network, we have developed relationships across the country,” Johnson said. “We work with buyers, sellers, landlords and tenants from coast to coast. This powerful network allows us to help our clients regardless of the location, size or type of commercial property.”

Geneva-based SVN Landmark, opened by Johnson in 2005, is an independently-owned franchise of Sperry Van Ness International. “It has been satisfying to provide our clients with the resources of a national firm, plus established local expertise,” Johnson said. SVN promotes a company-wide culture of collaboration and fairness, based on a strong ethical foundation.

The Lipsey Co. 2016 survey again ranked SVN as the sixth-most recognized commercial real estate brand. SVN International has a presence in every major U.S. market, plus several other countries. “We are linked with 200 offices representing specialists in every commercial asset type,” Johnson said. “Our clients benefit from the technology and marketing resources of a world-class company. ALEXANDER LUMBER:

Over 125 years of building communities

A

lexander Lumber is a family-owned company with a heritage of quality, service and commitment to both trade professionals and local homeowners. Their founder, John Alexander came to the United States from Scotland, and opened his first lumberyard in Aurora, Illinois in 1891. He sought to expand his lumber operation and was provided the opportunity when the railroads started reaching out west. John was able to negotiate a series of land leases with the railroads setting lumberyards at close intervals along the line. By the late 1920s, he operated well over 100 so-called “line yards.” The family business expanded rapidly as the years went by, both John’s son, John Jr, and his grandson Walter, became involved.

“We feel the values that have allowed us to operate for 125 years align very closely with the values that the people of our communities have come to expect and who they choose to do business with,” says District Manager, Greg Kimbrell. Alexander Lumber is more than a lumberyard. At their 20 locations throughout Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa, they are a go-to resource for home renovation projects; selling windows, doors, kitchen and bath cabinets, hardware, decking, roofing, trim/ moulding and more. No matter the size and scope of the project — remodeling a kitchen, adding a deck, replacing windows and doors, upgrading a bathroom, refinishing a basement — they help their customers get it done. Alexander Lumber specialists provide expert advice, unmatched knowledge and creative suggestions—from the beginning to the end of the project.

ustin’s Violin Shop makes, repairs, sells and rents the four orchestral stringed instruments— violin, viola, cello, and bass—and offers a wide range of music, stands and accessories. Their courier service travels throughout the Chicagoland area. Owner Patricia Austin began playing the violin in fourth grade and continued to study music at Northern Illinois University. There, she also studied violin-making with Mr. Harold Walker

CLOSING in DeKalb. Patricia began teaching Suzuki violin to students in 1975. In 1981, she and her husband, Dana, opened Austin’s Violin Shop in a ramshackle house on Wheeler Road—very humble beginnings!

Upon Dana’s passing in 1994, Patricia took over the violin shop and gradually transitioned from full-time teaching to running the shop. The Austin’s oldest daughter, Honna, currently provides lessons in the studio two days a week, as well as at a large strings studio in Batavia. Daughter Holly graduated from the violin-making school and is now a luthier at the shop, and son Joel aspires to become a luthier.

In 1986, the Austins moved their shop to its current location on Wheeler Road. Their business continued to grow, along with their family of eight children. The location presents easy access to several area studios and schools. Working out of their home also gave Patricia the opportunity to be close to her children while teaching full time. Dana converted the garage into a working shop for meeting with customers, as well as for luthier services.

“Our main philosophy is to allow students from our area the opportunity to enjoy playing a stringed instrument, and to provide them with high-quality equipment and service,” Patricia said. She said that she never foresaw the size that they have grown to, or the number of wonderful families and teachers they have met over the years. “I’ve been able to incorporate many loves into this place—music, children, gardens, pets,” she said. “We have so much to be thankful for.” If you have a question or need about anything concerning orchestra strings, the Austins have the answer and the products, or they will find it for you.

T

he goal of the Fox Valley Auto Group, Fox Valley Volkswagen St. Charles, Fox Valley Volkswagen Schaumburg and Fox Valley Buick GMC St. Charles is to sell and service new Volkswagen, Buick and GMC vehicles and all makes and models of pre-driven vehicles.

Abinion began selling vehicles to help pay for college and fell in love with the business. His first dealership was Landmark Ford in Niles, IL for 16 years. Vice President, Pre-driven Vehicle

Abinion added a new Volkswagen dealership in West Chicago in 2006, which in 2016 moved and expanded to a 40,000 square-foot facility in St. Charles. Fox Valley Volkswagen Schaumburg opened in 2008 and Fox Valley Buick GMC of St. Charles in 2011.

Their mission is to move people. But this is not about selling their customers a vehicle and repairing the ones they already have. It is about much more than that and it is certainly much more than two simple words. They want everyone who is in contact with their team members every day to be MOVED. Moved in many ways, but always for the better — better than before their engagement with them — whether it is financially, spiritually, emotionally as well as professionally. “We want to move people to a better place in their lives just by dealing and working with us,” said founder, President and CEO Emir Abinion. “Imagine the impact we can have on people’s lives with this as our focus. This is what it truly means to be of service.”

Their focus toward providing superior customer service and excellent ownership experience has allowed Fox Valley Auto Group to expand over the years.

Director and Partner Shakeel Omar, operated a successful pre-driven automotive retail store in Chicago, IL for over 16 years. Long-time friends, Abinion and Omar met when they were selling cars together at Golf Mill Ford in the mid-1980s.

In 2016, Frank Butnaru, who worked for Abinion in sales at Landmark Ford, was named as a second partner and is the General Manager of the Volkswagen dealership in Schaumburg. The two are long-time friends, as well. In 2012, Volkswagen awarded Abinion the Volkswagen Diamond Pin Award, a

recognition bestowed on only four dealers in North America and 70 Volkswagen dealers world-wide, for their overall commitment to the brand and its customers. They were again recognized in 2015 with membership in Volkswagen’s Customer First Club. This accolade recognizes the dealership as a top performer in customer satisfaction on a national level. The two things that drive Abinion are finding ways to make it better and more convenient for the dealerships’ customers to do business with them, and how can they serve the community better. Fox Valley Auto Group has three locations and approximately 160 employees. Together, Fox Valley Auto Group sells about 5,000 vehicles and services over 54,000 vehicles annually. Abinion said the secret to his dealerships’ success is to treat people like he would want to be treated and to be a value through service to his customers and community. “This comes first before any vehicle is sold or serviced,” he said.

ndy Zatos has a long history in the restaurant industry, and he has transformed that experience into a growing chain of breakfast and lunch restaurants called the Brunch Café. The most recent addition to the Brunch Café family is in St. Charles, at 172 S. First St., and it serves as yet another example of why he has spent the past 28 years in the field. “We pride ourselves on providing our guests with exceptional fresh food, great guest interaction, and a comfortable environment,” Andy said. “I’ve always enjoyed visiting St. Charles; we have customers who live in St. Charles.”

OPENING SOON!

The self-styled “contemporary breakfast and lunch café” opened its first location in 2008, and has been steadily growing ever since. Their focus is on more than just the food, although the menu — complete with regularly changing daily specials — makes it clear that a lot of time and effort goes into each item. According to his website, brunchcafe.com, not only is the Brunch Café well-known for its breakfast and lunch staples, “… we’re also well-known for our decadent twists on the regulars … like the stuffed french toast, blueberry bliss cakes and berry explosion waffle.”

That ability to apply a unique approach to things has translated into far more than just the Brunch Café menu. It’s also how Andy approaches every day, whether it’s how he runs his business, how he interacts with his customers, or how he works with his team. “I enjoy how every day is different. Every day brings something new, funny and memorable,” he said. The Brunch Café also offers catering and event-hosting services, as well. For most entrees, they require a 10-person minimum order, and in order to ensure the highest-quality service, they ask for 24 hours notice for next-day pick-up and delivery. However, same-day orders may be accommodated, although the menu options could be limited. For weekend catering orders, they ask for a 48-hour notice. In addition to catering for pick up or delivery, the restaurant is also available to host events, such as bridal and baby showers, rehearsal dinners or any other special event. So whether it is time for breakfast, brunch or lunch, or a special event, Andy and his team at the Brunch Café have something perfect for you. They are able to do that because of a simple, yet obviously effective, strategy. “My goal is to provide people exactly what I would like in a restaurant, and then treat people how I would like to be treated,” Andy said.

In March 2015, Caroline became the owner of Seniors Helping Seniors inhome senior care service in the Fox Valley (Tri-Cities) and Kane County areas. Caroline’s team provides a variety of non-medical assistance for seniors with their activities of daily living, such as assistance with dressing and grooming, meal preparation, laundry, errands, doctor visits, light housekeeping, respite care and more. They work to ensure the senior’s safety, reduce their loneliness, and encourage independent living while they remain in their homes (or care facilities) for as long as possible. Caroline’s goal is to help foster relationships between loving, caring and compassionate seniors with those seniors who need and want assistance to continue living in their own homes and remain engaged in the community. With both of her parents gone, Caroline said she feels that this endeavor will help fill that void of missing them so much, while continuing their legacy of helping others in the community.

his year marks 17 years in business for the Mattress Warehouse of DeKalb, a locally owned family company. Visit this retail store in DeKalb at 1224 E. Lincoln Highway (across from the Moose Club and behind Star Worlds Arcade). The showrooms are open to the public six days a week; Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. It is closed on Tuesdays. “In 2000, we found an old 1920s brick warehouse that was kind of off the beaten path on DeKalb’s east side,” said owner Mike Kisluk. “We had the idea of establishing a store with very low overhead so that families could afford good-quality mattresses. We started with just five mattresses in a showroom so tiny you could hardly turn around. But the support from the community was so incredible that we expanded our showrooms.” Today, the Mattress Warehouse of DeKalb sells a wide range of mattresses, including memory foam beds, futons, bunk beds, headboards, daybeds, platform beds and loft beds are also available. You can find specialty items, such as waterbed supplies and custom-sized mattresses for antique beds, campers, RVs and truck sleepers. In stock are split-queen box springs. Unusual application bed frames and hardware are kept on-hand. Recently added is a specialty line of durable mattresses for the plus-size sleeper. All mattresses are made in the USA.

Mattress Warehouse of DeKalb recognizes that 21st Century demands often place time pressures on families. So, 75 to 80 percent of the mattress line-up is in-stock, ready to be loaded into a customer’s van or truck. Same day delivery is available on most merchandise. All the products are new and backed by a manufacturer’s warranty. Providing family-budget pricing means Mattress Warehouse is often the destination of choice for “big girl” and “big boy” beds. “One of the best things about working here is being around the little kids’ high energy and enthusiasm,” Kisluk said. He reassures parents that their children are always welcome. The Mattress Warehouse of DeKalb strives to offer a safe, relaxing, no-pressure atmosphere. “We aim to keep the store low-key,” he said. “We are ready to explain how the mattresses are constructed. Everyone is encouraged to lay down and try the beds. A comfort-based personal-preference approach to choosing a mattress is best.” “Our prices still surprise people,” Kisluk continued. “Our guiding principle is to find the best mattresses we can and sell them at the lowest prices possible. We are grateful to all the local people, Northern Illinois University students and shoppers from distant towns for your support these 17 years.” Mattress Warehouse of DeKalb can be reached at (815) 756-4999.

HOME SWEET HOME Miscella Real Estate Welcomes Melissa Nicholson

“I chose Miscella because I was so impressed with the importance stressed on truly caring for each client,” Nicholson said. “An effort is made to create relationships, not just customers or clients.”

After 22 years at home, home-schooling her children, Melissa Nicholson decided it was time for a change.

Nicholson’s goal in business is to truly listen and understand the needs of each of her clients. Buying and selling a home is an emotional time. Every client has their own story and personal needs. It’s important to her to hear those stories and cater to each individual’s needs. No one is just a buyer or a seller — they are people with lives just like her.

“Since I’ve spent half of my personal life buying and selling homes myself, I knew I could understand the stress, joy, and many other emotions involved in selling, moving, and buying,” Nicholson said. “I wanted a career in which I could share my knowledge of the industry and my love for people; and I knew real estate was the perfect fit.” She also knew real estate was her dream job because she is a true extrovert, loves meeting new people, the constant change in the business, and the opportunity to help and care for others. After studying for and passing the Illinois real estate broker exam on her first try, Nicholson immediately began researching companies and sought a position with Miscella Real Estate in Geneva.

Nicholson recently moved to St. Charles and is excited to be serving clients in the Fox Valley area. “I have always loved this area. Even while living far away, coming back here was always home to me. There is nowhere else I’d rather be. The friendly people, the dining, the shopping — it’s the perfect place to work and call home.” Nicholson believes anyone can have anything they want if they work hard for it. She is looking forward to building new relationships in the community and working hard to help buyers and sellers alike.

or three generations, the Ream family has been in the meat business, continually improving and expanding their product line of fresh meat, smoked meats and over 200 varieties of sausage and unique food items. With the move this year to their new, larger location, they now also offer a selection of wine and local craft beer. Robert and Phyllis Ream bought the Elburn market in 1954 to sell quality fresh meat and processing for local farmers in rural Kane County. In the early 1980s, their son Randy began learning the art of smoked meats and sausages, seeking out and purchasing German-made smokehouses and other meat- manufacturing equipment. Randy Ream has since built a reputation for his knowledge, skill, and friendly way of doing business. He has won over 300 awards in state, national, and international smoked meat competitions, and has been inducted into the National Cured Meat Hall of Fame. The Ream family manufactures all of their smoked meats and sausages on-site. They make over 10 varieties of hotdogs, 20+ varieties of bratwurst, all of their lunchmeat, hams, bacon, artisan hard salamis and more! oyal Companions is a pet-centric veterinary practice providing state-of-the-art care in a FearFree environment. This results in more pleasant visits for beloved pets and their people. Loyal Companions is passionate about elevating the care your pet receives to the next level.

Dr. Vicki Petsche has practiced veterinary medicine for 22 years and has worked in several veterinary hospitals in the Chicago suburbs, as well as in Miami, Fla. She settled in the Fox Valley area 15 years ago, and has been practicing in this community ever since.

Loyal Companions Animal Hospital and Pet Resort is a full-service veterinary hospital that also offers luxury overnight lodging, day care, grooming and training classes. The style of the building allowed Dr. Petsche to design the animal hospital and pet resort of her dreams. As an added bonus, there is a spacious yard for the lodging and day care pets to get outdoor exercise. Dr. Petsche’s love for animals began at a very young age. She started riding horses when she was five years old, and throughout her childhood spent her time caring for her family’s pets — dogs, cats, hamsters, horses and a goat. It was here, as a little girl in rural Michigan, that she decided to become a veterinarian. Dr. Petsche has aligned herself with the recently developed Fear-Free initiative, and Loyal Companions is one of the first animal hospitals in the country to have the whole staff become Fear-Free Certified Professionals. Special attention has been paid to the smallest details of the new hospital’s design to ensure every pet’s experience at Loyal Companions is calming and pleasant.

Loyal Companions Fear Free certified staff employ numerous scientifically based techniques to keep pets (and their people!) calm and stress free while they receive veterinary care. This includes an innovative hospital design, which gives cats their own section in the hospital so they never have to see, hear or smell a dog. Cats and dogs have their own separate entrances. Additionally, the new animal hospital design has eliminated the waiting room, as this can be the area where most pets and their people become stressed. Upon arriving, pets and their people are ushered into spacious exam rooms, each with a window to allow for natural light, proven to improve wellbeing. Scientifically proven to produce calming effects, speciesspecific calming music and pheromones are diffused into each room. To ensure pets equate only positive experiences with coming to Loyal Companions, owners are asked to bring their pets to their appointments hungry so tasty treats or food

omet Motorsports is an automotive performance and service business, serving domestic, Asian and European vehicles. Komet offers performance parts sales and service, general service and maintenance, dyno services and tuning, and paintless dent repair, including repair from hail damage. Frank Kapusinski has more than 45 years of automotive service and repair in both dealership and independent shops; his son Kurt Kapusinski has more than 18 years of automotive and motorcycle service and repair and paintless dent repair. Rick Guzman started out as a customer who wanted to become a mechanic. Shortly after graduating from Universal Technical Institute, Rick joined Komet full time and has been part of the team for the past five years. “We are all “car guys” who enjoy the challenges of servicing today’s vehicles and the people to whom cars are more than just transportation,” Frank said. “Many of our customers have classic muscle cars that most shops are not interested in servicing anymore.”

They bring to their business a love of driving, competing in, and working on cars. In addition to the regular repair services, Komet ‘s specialty is its in-ground chassis dynamometer. It allows people to learn the actual power and torque output of their vehicles and how possible modifications would effect that output. The Kapusinskis opened Komet for business in 2006 and have been growing it every day since then. Much of their new business is generated through referrals from their loyal and satisfied customer base. Although they have the experience and the drive to succeed, they don’t consider themselves “experts” in the field. “I think you can only become an ‘expert’ in a field that has stopped changing,” Frank said. “We learn of new automotive advances on a daily basis.” He said their memorable moments are when they are able to resolve a problem that drives them crazy, or one that couldn’t be fixed by other automotive shops. Two philosophies drive their business: “We strive to give people the best value and service for their money,” Frank said. “We treat our customers the way we expect to be treated … honestly and fairly.”

ccording to co-owner Ken Stevens, one of the more frequently asked questions about Blue Whale Plumbing is how the company received its unique name.

“Blue Whale was our first van’s nickname. When we bought it, co-owner Phil Paulino was driving the van and his wife was driving behind him. Phil’s wife said it looked like Phil was driving a blue whale,” Stevens said. “We had a different name picked out, but I suggested ‘Hey, what about Blue Whale?’” Fast-forward to today, and the company has the distinction of being far more than just a brightly colored van; Blue Whale Plumbing offers its services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. “We are the only (plumbing) company that offers true 24/7 services without any extra cost,” Stevens said. Paulino and Stevens are able to provide customer service unparalleled to any other company due to the fact that they offer a myriad of services, all while keeping their availability open. Blue Whale’s commitment to its customers is unlike any other companies in this industry.

“Our philosophy is to offer five-star quality plumbing services with very reasonable rates,” Stevens said. With a combined 30 years of experience, Paulino and Stevens originally began this company as a way to further connect with the community, as well as create a legacy for their families.

community. In the next five years, we hope to grow as a business in this community,” Stevens said. “If I could tell customers anything, it would be that Blue Whale is here to help your community.” By making it a goal to build trust with each individual customer it services, Blue Whale is a modest but confident family-run business that understands the importance of each customer. Despite those positive traits, Blue Whale’s secret to success is just four words. “Lots of hard work,” Stevens said.

St. Charles Park District, Norris Recreation Center:

A Match Made in Fitness Heaven There’s fit, and then there’s fitness.

Along with amenities such as the aforementioned child care services, the Center also offers locker rooms, whirlpool and towel service. For an additional fee, members can also sign up for massage therapy or arrange to work with a personal trainer.

And when both come together in a seamlessly sensible way, it is truly a match made in fitness heaven. The Norris Recreation Center’s wide array of fitness, tennis and aquatic programs are suitable for all ages and abilities.

Membership fees are competitive with those of commercial fitness and health clubs. Resident membership is available to anyone living within the geographical boundaries of CUSD 303.

In December 2015, the St. Charles Park District entered into an Intergovernmental Agreement with Community Unit School District 303 to manage the Norris Recreation Center’s programs, memberships and services, while the school district would retain ownership of the physical building and property. It’s a win-win for both entities. In fact, both agencies were recently recognized with an Intergovernmental Cooperation Award from the Illinois Association of Park Districts. The new facilities give the park district the opportunity to expand its recreational services by adding indoor tennis courts and an indoor swimming pool to give residents that important year-round option; access to a fitness center with dedicated fitness studio, cardio equipment, free- and machine-weights, and an indoor cycling room. Walking into the Norris Recreation Center, one sees children happily entering the center’s on-site childcare facility, while moms and dads head off to the 50-meter indoor pool or venture downstairs to the workout rooms where a dazzling array of treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, rowing machines, stair climbers, and free- and adjustable weights supply everything one could need for a cardio and weight-training workout. Back upstairs in the fitness studio, participants can take a class in everything from Aerostep to Zumba, Yoga to Pilates.

Corporate memberships make healthy and happy employees. There are many benefits to offering a corporate wellness program from reducing absenteeism and lowering health costs to improving morale and increasing productivity. And, there’s no cost to the company. When people sign up for a health club membership, they expect to realize benefits in terms of strength, agility and stamina. With childcare facilities, group fitness classes and attractive payment options, the perks of a Norris Recreation Center membership go far beyond toned muscles and tighter abs. “We have a great community here at Norris,” said Rachel Schumacher, Membership Services Supervisor. “There’s something for everyone and we do our best to accommodate everyone’s needs.” One of the few area facilities to offer a comprehensive tennis program for youths, individuals, couples and families, the Norris Recreation Center is a haven for tennis buffs. Enthusiasts can opt for a tennis-club-only membership and take advantage of perks such as advance court registration or establishing a permanent court time. Members can opt to pay on a month-by-month basis or take care of an entire year up front and receive approximately a 5% discount for doing so. There’s also a user-friendly cancellation policy and the option of temporarily suspending one’s membership for situations like an extended winter vacation. Scheduling is also an important part of the Center’s group fitness program. With classes starting as early as 5:30am and running as late as 7:30pm, there’s sure to be a fitness class to fit almost every schedule. From Pilates to yoga, cardio to cycling, all the Center’s fitness classes are included in the price of Club membership. Located at 1050 Dunham Road on the campus of St. Charles East High School, the Norris Recreation Center is open seven days a week. For more information, visit www.norrisrec.org. State Street Jewelers at 230 West State St. has the pleasure of being the oldest jewelry store in Geneva.

T

he 200 block of State Street has housed a jewelry store since 1915, when the Fargo Block building in the center of the block was built. Now in its third location on the same block, at the southeast corner of State and Third streets, State Street Jewelers has doubled its size and currently employs a staff of 12. This new location has allowed the store to be in the heart of the downtown, and each year it looks forward to being involved in all of the events that Geneva has to offer. The face of State Street Jewelers is the highly trained staff; many have been in the business for over 30 years. As an ongoing part of employment, each staff member is required to take at least one class per year and attend seminars regularly. The store now has two graduate gemologists, two bench jewelers and several employees taking their continuing education through the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). State Street Jewelers also encourages each member of the staff to be involved in a local charity or civic organization, because the store wants to give back to the community. Staff members are involved with groups like Anderson Animal Shelter, Holmstad, Geneva Chamber of Commerce, Geneva Women In Business, Hospice and Lazarus House, to name a few. In the last year, their donations to local schools, churches and fundraisers have exceeded $25,000. From the very beginning,

the home. Tom Wangler and his team conduct a complete load analysis on every installation to determine the exact size furnace the home would need.

onfident Aire, Inc. was founded in 1992 by Tom Wangler, Jr., a secondgeneration heating and cooling specialist who started with his father at age 13.

They calculate the actual load requirements on the furnace by measuring the home’s square footage, as well as taking into account other critical factors, including the number and size of windows, direction of the sun, thickness of walls, room measurements and whether a garage, basement or crawlspace lies below the rooms. They also inspect air returns and heating vents to check for proper heat distribution and look for drafty areas where heat loss may occur.

Wangler became an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America as a young teenager and applies the core values of trustworthiness, loyalty and courtesy in his dealings with customers. Tom hires employees based on these same core values and demands excellence from his entire team, striving always to provide the very best heating, cooling and plumbing techniques in the industry.

According to Confident Aire, Inc., buying a new furnace is a lot like buying a car. Just like you may not want a big car that sucks up a lot of gas, you don’t want an oversized furnace, because it can drive up your energy bill. Instead, you’re better off with a reliable furnace just large enough to efficiently heat your home and keep up with demand on the coldest winter days.

Confident Aire, Inc. provides award-winning service. They have received several prestigious awards over the years, including: • Angie’s List Super Service Award four years in a row • Best of the Fox Award seven years in a row • The Trane Distinguished Dealer Award the past four years Confident Aire, Inc. is a true believer in supporting the community. They sponsor the “Ultimate Energy Transformation Award,” annually installing a high-efficiency Trane furnace, thermostat and air duct cleaning free of charge to a deserving family in the Fox Valley area. Confident Aire, Inc. offers homeowners a preventative maintenance agreement that includes three visits each year to inspect and tune up the air conditioning and heating system, as well as inspect the plumbing system in the home. One of the specials offered by Confident Aire, Inc. right now is interest-free financing on all new Trane heating or cooling systems. Residents of the Fox Valley are encouraged to call (630) 761-9007 for details. Confident Aire, Inc. always takes the time to install the perfect size heating or cooling unit in

In addition to heating, cooling and plumbing services, Confident Aire, Inc., also specializes in the installation of energy-saving devices and equipment in the home. idwest Window & Supply is a compilation of three generations of the Gilkey family, starting with Harry Gilkey, who ran a family farm and a general contracting company. Harry’s son Lee began building homes in the Fox Valley area in the early 1960’s. In 1985, Lee created Trim Works, Inc., specializing in custom millwork installation. Lee’s son Ken, who had worked in construction with his father since childhood, joined him in the family business and eventually took over day-to-day operations. Realizing the value of a company that could supply AND install millwork, Lee started his own millwork supply company, Midwest Window & Supply, in 1987. Midwest has the ability to manufacture, supply, and/or install a wide variety of millwork in a number of different remodeling and new construction applications. The combination of Midwest’s full-service custom shop, high-quality product lines, and exceptional customer service continues to raise the bar in the millwork industry. Specializing in windows, doors and millwork, Midwest Window & Supply has been supplying high-quality millwork to homeowners, builders and remodelers in the Chicagoland area for over 30 years. Midwest believes it can offer a complete package for consumers who are looking to turn their existing homes into their dream home.

After a 10-week journey that included a stay at Mayo Clinic and took him to Loma Linda, Calif., doctors found proton therapy was Dan’s best option to beat this deadly disease. While Dan was away, he found out that the dedication he had for his insurance business was ingrained throughout his employees, who not only ran his Sugar Grove-based business in his absence, they handled everything without a hiccup. “I not only had my family for support, but my insurance family (staff, clients and companies) behind me through prayer,” Dan said. Started by brothers Paul and George Karas, along with a slew of their kids, cousins, brothers-inlaw, aunts and uncles, the Karas family owns and manages The Village Squire Restaurants in South Elgin, West Dundee, Crystal Lake and McHenry, along with Bob’s venture Rookies Sports Bar & Grill in St. Charles, Elgin, Hoffman Estates, and the newest one in Huntley. The family also owns Alexander’s Café in Elgin, which has gone through a million dollar renovation, featuring a new menu. Under the culinary guidance of Corporate Chef Grant Werner, Alexander’s new concept in Elgin has flourished. So when a prime St. Charles location that Bob had eyed for some time across from Rookies became available, Bob took advantage. He partnered with Aleko Karas and Nick Smith to launch a new Alexander’s Café. Alexander’s Café serves breakfast and lunch seven days a week, as well as offering a few supper-type options. Guests can stop in for a traditional breakfast featuring eggs and hand-cut French toast, or something new such as chilaquiles. Lunch options include specialties such as fish tacos, fresh cut salads, charbroiled burgers and sandwiches using artisan breads. Home-cooked meatloaf, pot roast and beef stroganoff are also served during lunchtime. Fast to-gos, online ordering, catering and private events at night are also available. Co-owner Nick Smith grew up in St. Charles and graduated from St. Charles North in 2003. While in high school and college he worked at Salerno’s on the Fox and after graduating from Columbia College in 2008 he moved to Los Angeles, where he wrote and directed the feature length film, “Munger Road.”

Shot in St. Charles, the movie went on to be a huge success. Smith was ready to move back to Los Angeles when he met and fell in love with a girl named Eleni Karas, Aleko Karas’ sister, whose family is responsible for the Village Squire, Rookies Sports Pub, and the Alexander’s Café in Elgin. Her father asked him if he was interested in joining their business and he’s been with them ever since. Guests will discover a few things that are unique to Alexander’s they will not experience anywhere else. Alexander’s offers Oberweis milk and ice cream as well as freshly-squeezed orange juice and several offerings from Ream’s Meat Market in Elburn. Sourcing products locally is a practice the Karas restaurant family values, and will continue to do whenever possible. Smith said that the secret to all the restaurants’ success is consistent quality using fresh ingredients, and their dedicated employees. “We treat our employees like part of the family. They are diligent, hard-working, and personable,” he said. “Anyone can serve eggs or French toast. Our philosophy is to create a place every single day that guests can truly call home. Our goal is to maintain a clean, well-stocked restaurant with the best ingredients, that is filled with energetic, creative people and dishes that don’t overlook any small details.” Smith said he hopes to maintain and build on the reputation that the Karas family has earned throughout the area. He also wants to make sure that the family’s establishments are on the forefront of new trends, developing new recipes, while keeping their namesake dishes consistent. “I always ask that guests introduce themselves to me and say hello,” Nick said. “This is a people business and I want to be a part of your busy lives just to say that I care and am thankful.”

ASC is situated on about 265 acres just south of Waterman, Ill., and is open to its members 365 days a year. The club is a community of members with family memberships — each receiving three free guest passes per year.

the 2017 shooting season, the Action Shooting Sports Department will be supported by a dedicated range with nine earthen-walled bays including eight bays 100 feet long and one bay 240 feet long. And you won’t want to miss the annual Zombie Shoot held every September. It draws hundreds of action shooters annually. ASC also offers its members a 3-D archery range, a golf driving range, stocked pond for fishing and limited hunting opportunities.

As a private shooting club, the ranges are gated and accessible to the public only for specific scheduled activities. However, the nonprofit Illinois corporation provides many events and educational opportunities to both its members and the public. The Shotgun Shooting Sports Department features a challenging sporting clays course, two trap fields and one double trap field, two skeet fields and brand-new five-stand. There is also a shotgun patterning board and manual throwers for individual use. Group activities, special events and private shoots are also available for birthday celebrations, corporate outings and wedding parties. ASC features a quarter mile of pistol and rifle ranges, including four 50-foot ranges, three 25-yard, and one each 50-, 100-, 200- and 600-yard ranges that support member open shooting, including pistol, rifle, canon and mortars. There is also an extensive list of organized events open to the public, including Muzzle-loading, Cowboy Action Shooting, Bullseye, International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) and Skill Drills to prepare shooters for IDPA. The ASC Action Shooting Sports Department offers the most robust action shooting programming in the region including 3-Gun, 2-Gun, practical rifle, practical precision rifle, IDPA and cowboy action shooting. H

ouse of Fireplaces aspires to be your “one-stop fireplace shop,” where we can meet all of your fireplace needs, from complete installation of new fireplaces to technical support and advice. We offer gas, wood and electric fireplaces, gas logs, inserts, custom glass doors, custom mantels, granite, marble, cultured stone, installation and superb service. Come see our newly-updated and re-designed showroom. Marvel at our dramatic new centerpiece, the Heat & Glo True masonrystyled direct vent fireplace, and all our new displays and products. We’ve made a major investment to make your shopping experience even better. Showroom manager Kevin Sandell represents the third generation of the Sandell family business. Kevin manages the retail side of the business while his father, Mark Sandell, manages the wholesale side. Founded in 1953 by Stanley Sandell after his return from the Navy in World War II, the business began as one of the first distributors of the Thulman wood burning

FOR OVER 60 YEARS

fireplace. When Thulman turned into the Majestic Fireplace Company, the business took the name Majestic Distributing. Originally a strictly wholesale company selling the Majestic Fireplace to builders and heating contractors, we opened our first retail outlet in 1963—and House of Fireplaces was born. Kevin, who started at the bottom sweeping the warehouse after school as a kid, worked summers and winters while going to school. He started working full time shortly after graduating college with a degree in business administration, and took over showroom operations in 2010.

“We have been selling fireplaces since the very beginning of the air-cooled prefabricated fireplace,” Kevin said. “We have seen the industry go from one manufacturer to hundreds, from three fireplace choices to thousands. Throughout this evolution, we have continued to adapt to the changing tastes by adding more options, brands and choices for the customer.” We offer the best fireplaces, and with the most knowledgeable employees, the best possible customer service before and after the sale. We go the extra mile in customer service. One of our funniest and most memorable experiences happened when a customer came in with his wife to look at gas logs. He really liked the gas grills, but she was not interested in the grills. So they looked at log sets and left. A couple days later, the wife returned, saying she would like to buy the grill for her husband as a surprise birthday present. She bought the grill and asked us to hold it until they came back

for a log set. Later that week, the husband returned by himself and said he would like to buy the grill without his wife knowing about it. Somehow, we managed to hold him off on buying the grill. It ended up being a great surprise for him when they came in to get the gas log set, and he saw the grill with a big bow on it. Our future plans include expanding the showroom space during the next year to better showcase some of the exceptional fireplaces and options available. We would also like to add an outdoor products display area. We look forward to discovering how the fireplace industry will change and what new things there will be. We would like to see an increase in our in-house manufactured products, perhaps including a millwork shop for in-house custom mantels or a metal shop for high quality chase tops and chimney housings.

Moss Family Funeral Homes

M

care for all family members, including pets

oss Family Funeral Homes is a fullservice, family-owned and operated funeral services business. Owners Bryan and Mandi Moss provide death care, funeral and cremation services, and offer a choice of urns, caskets, and cemetery memorials or “headstones.”

He moved to the Fox Valley area in 1999, where he began working for the previous owners of the Batavia Funeral Home. He purchased the home in Batavia in 2001, and together with his wife Mandi, successfully operated and transitioned the business to its current identity as the Moss Family Funeral Home.

The Moss family takes pride in the fact that your loved one never leaves their care. Theirs is the only funeral home in the Fox Valley area that owns and operates both a human and pet crematory. Most other funeral homes outsource this service.

He was 27 years old. He knew that he wanted to own and operate his own funeral home at some point in his career, and it just happened that the previous owner wanted to retire, giving him the chance.

Through a division of Moss Family Funeral Homes, Moss Family Paws was created to care for pets. The firm added its pet service in May of 2013 following the completion of its cremation center, located at 1803 Suncast Lane in Batavia.

“I was just a kid, and everyone assumed my father was in the business with me. I had to earn the trust of the families we served,” he said. “Our dedication to help and serve the loved ones’ families shone through, and these same families are our biggest referral source.”

Bryan attributes the death of his father of a heart attack at age 42 when he was a young man of 16 years old for the reason he selected this profession. He is often asked how and why he got into the death care business, and his first response is that his profession is a calling. The experience of losing his father led him to a passion for caring for people dealing with death, loss and grief. He wanted a profession where he could help others going through the same experiences he had gone through. Born and raised in the small farming community of Mendota, Ill., Bryan went on to obtain his degree in Mortuary Science in 1996 at Worsham College. For the next three years, he had an opportunity to work for a small, family-owned funeral home in north central Illinois, as well as for a large corporation that owned and operated more than 100 funeral homes throughout the United States.

St. Charles Foyer

St. Charles Community Room

The business grew, and by 2009, the Moss family had added two more associate-licensed funeral directors. They purchased the Norris Funeral Home in St. Charles and began its renovation. Though their business has changed and grown, their philosophy of incorporating the highest level of respect, dignity, ethics and value to their service has remained the same. Bryan attributes their success to their ability to have options for every family. “There is not one package or one direction that fits every deceased individual or their families,” he said. “We think outside the box and create a celebration of life that is unique to the individuals we serve.”
