Couple thrives with Friends in Hope mentorship By Abigail Pelzer Newton Daily News

N

ine months ago Travis Fairchild was in a bind he couldn’t fathom es-

caping. Travis’ hardships included totaling his car in a winter accident, losing his job and a precarious living situation. Meanwhile, he was making some poor decisions. With a wife and two young children to provide for, Travis said he felt like his

life was spiraling out of control. That’s when he connected with Friends in Hope, a Newton-based mentoring program that was founded through The Salvation Army. Travis’ tenacity, along with the guiding hand of a mentor, are what makes he and his family’s story one of success. Travis, 27, and Valerie, 28, are both from the Pella and Knoxville areas, and have lived in Newton for about three years. Their sons, 9 and 8 years old,

are students in Newton schools. “We were having hard times,” Valerie said. “He was the only one working and when he couldn’t make it back and forth to work in Grinnell things got bad.” Walking everywhere, applying at all jobs they could, they eventually made a connection at The Salvation Army and hesitantly accepted an offer to learn more about Friends in Hope. Heartland AEA rep explains systems analysis — quickly Test scores, other data crunched by support agency By Jason W. Brooks Newton Daily News Heartland Area Education Agency Regional Director Chris Pierson acknowledged he’s had about 15 months to crunch the data he presented Monday. “And I gave all that to you guys on the board in about 26 minutes,” he said, smiling. Pierson, speaking as the invited guest to the Newton Community School District board of education’s monthly Board Learning Workshop, presented a dizzying set of test score trends and other data in his short time at the podium. While he didn’t expect the seven board members to digest and retain every single statistic, he managed to drive the point home that numbers can be used to find positive and negative trends among students. Festival of Trees marks 10th year at courthouse If you enter the Jasper County Courthouse at any time during the next month, you’ll see the results of one of the largest, most collaborative Christmas-decorating efforts in Jasper County. Monday evening, young people from about 14 different area clubs gathered to decorate as part of the annual Jasper County 4-H Festival of Trees. While not all of the items decorated are actual trees — and some

of the decorations might be considered non-traditional — the festival will still offer young people a chance to be of service to their community. Iowa State University Extension & Outreach Jasper County Youth

Coordinator Stacey Wilson said what’s special about the festival is how it brings the entire county’s 4-H members together with a common, non-competitive goal. TREES | 11A
