TREND REPORT:
Impress your guests with board and batten!
B
OARD AND BATTEN continues to be a popular trend and can even be a quick way to update your home before guests arrive for the holidays. A simple wall dressing that typically uses wide boards nailed side-by-side with strips of narrow wood (called a batten) layered on top to cover the seams, board and batten offers both subtle architectural detail as well as a timeless appeal that will mix well with any style of home—from traditional to modern—and is an easy DIY project that could be finished in a weekend. Best of all, you can usually source all of the materials you need right at your local home improvement store. While anywhere could benefit from a feature wall, personally I love the idea of using it in an entryway or foyer. This space is often one of the first places we greet our guests and offers an opportunity to make a great first impression. A white board and batten wall would keep your entry light and bright, and becomes the perfect backdrop for any kind of seasonal decor. Additionally, when guests arrive, we often have limited room to store extra coats, purses, boots, and other essentials. Adding hooks on a board and batten backdrop (see photo bottom right) and then layering with a dresser and shoe rack creates a cozy-chic storage solution. If you are inspired to give it a go, check out the post at Chatfieldcourt.com where Kristi and her husband Roger share easy instructions for creating a board and batten wall of your own, as well as many other fun DIY projects to spruce up your home for the holidays. n
