DESIGN TRENDS: New Year, New Home
W
ondering what design trends will usher in 2021? Now might be the time to ask your grandparents for tips. A New Year often brings along with it the desire to renew and refresh both ourselves and our surroundings. For 2021, experts predict there will be a greater focus on creating rooms that foster a warm, nostalgic feel— no surprise after such a cumbersome and unsettling year. Here are two of these trends that might bring you both comfort and joy: 2
1 1 / GRANDMILLENIAL DESIGN takes florals, lace finishes, velvet furniture, and antique decor and gives them a modern spin. Real Homes calls this “a new 2020/21 name for granny chic,” but don’t worry—there is a way to do it without making your home look like your nannas’. Go big on the old fashioned prints and designs, and give spaces a modern twist by adding in a more contemporary piece such as a mid-century style velvet sofa for a more nostalgic, and less stuffy, feel. 2 / COTTAGECORE was made popular by Instagram and Tik-Tok fashion influencers, and draws its inspiration from the English countryside with delicate floral prints, vintage fabrics, and wicker accessories. Sara McDaniel of Simply Southern Cottage blog says: “To put it into perspective, think of Narnia combined with Little House on the Prairie.” If flowers aren’t your thing, no worries: gingham, plaids, and other striped designs are a central part of creating this unique style. n
