ave you heard what all the “Cool Suburbs” are doing? As millennials age and their families expand they’ve been trading in their urban digs for a house in the ‘burbs. They want more space, good schools, and affordability—but don’t want to give up the fun and convenience of accessing dining, shopping, and a variety of entertainment spots. The movement is being called “hipsturbia,” and it’s one of the major themes identified in the Emerging Trends in Real Estate 2020, a report by Urban Land Institute and PwC. Byron Carlock, PwC’s Real Estate Leader says “We’re seeing millennials and Gen Zers deciding to do life together. We’re seeing home sharing, ride sharing and cost sharing. A lot of growth is

happening in cities around college towns, since they have a constant supply of young people and many decide to stay there after they graduate.” One of Chicago’s own suburbs, Evanston, is seeing a hipsturbia revival. Located near Northwestern University, residents enjoy rooftop bars, downtown shopping and access to and from the Chicago Loop via the CTA purple line. And in the Southwest, the hipsturbia formula is also happening in Tempe, Arizona. Located near Arizona State University, you’ll find coffee shops, restaurants, breweries, pubs, retail and entertainment—24/7.
