Remembering a Pioneer: Mike Bryan

I

t’s very difficult to write about someone who has passed away, but this is now what must be done. Mike Bryan, one of the original founders of Health Action Network and a long-standing supporter and friend, lost a five-year fight with melanoma this fall. If you knew Mike, or maybe just know someone passionate like him, I’d appreciate you taking a few moments to appreciate the contributions that he made to what he called the “alternative health movement.” He was a legislative policy analyst at the Health Protection Branch (which no longer exists) of the federal government. He conducted research, prepared cabinet policy documents and participated in briefings with ministers and senior departmental officials. One of the lengthy documents he wrote was entitled “Holistic Health” and it clearly revealed the extent of his knowledge and the depth of his belief in holistic health care. He knew firsthand why the public natural health education that we do here at HANS is important. And, that is why Mike, along with Dr. Alan Martin, wrote the constitution for HANS back in 1984. Something was wrong with the system, and he wanted to help fix it.

Mike’s passion for alternatives was born out of the frustration he experienced with the current health care system. Always a champion for an important cause, Mike went above and beyond the call of duty to be interviewed by media, to craft submissions to different levels of government on the benefits of individual choice in health care, and to welcome others into the dialogue required for change. My heart goes out to his family and friends, and to all of us who will miss his wise counsel when he calls our office. Or—more often—when we call him. My dear friend would be so very proud to know that the Director General of the Natural Health Products Directorate, Scott Sawler, came to the HANS office to meet with us in September to discuss our membership’s concerns about the reduced availability of natural health products. (The summary of our presentation to Director Sawler starts on page 6 and remains an ongoing issue for anyone interested in natural health and/or freedom of choice.) I just know Mike would say “Way to go! Good work, you guys!” And, we’d reply, “Wish you could have been here, Mike. We missed you.”

Article Correction The fall issue of Health Action magazine featured the article “Smart Meters: Big Brother’s Trojan Horse.” The article stated that the meters currently in use by BC Hydro, manufactured by Itron, contain mercury, a toxic environmental and health hazard. Although old Itron meters did contain mercury, it has been verified that the BC Hydro’s smart meters do not. We regret the error. 5 | Health Action | www.hans.org

The Voice of Consumers on Natural Health Product Regulation Presentation to Health Canada’s Natural Health Products Directorate by the Health Action Network Society on September 27, 2011 Because of members’ concerns over losing natural health product (NHP) choices, Health Action Network Society (HANS) requested a meeting with the Director General of the Natural Health Products Directorate (NHPD). On September 27th, the Director General Scott Sawler and two Health Canada officials paid a visit to our office in Burnaby. HANS Executive Director Lorna Hancock and Dr. Alan Martin presented the views that HANS members have made clear over the years, and gave the group a written report that we are sharing below. Mr. Sawler was appreciative of our position but made it clear that his Directorate can only work within the Food and Drugs Act and does not have the power to create a third regulatory category just for NHPs. Nonetheless, he appeared to understand our concerns and he also indicated a commitment to making the approval process smoother. It is our understanding that the Food and Drugs Act is currently under review and this would make it much easier to bring about the changes we seek. We will keep you informed. As is well known, the use and sales of natural remedies have increased dramatically in the last two decades. And with this rise have been various attempts at government regulation. The issue first came into prominence in the mid-1990s when the federal government said it planned to control the sales of supplements and other natural rem-

edies in the interest of public safety. The popular outcry was extraordinary. Thousands of people indicated their displeasure at this prospect. HANS, in response to appeals from members, held several forums for public discussion of the issue. At first we underestimated the public’s outrage, but after filling the ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Vancouver with about 1,700 people, it became clear that regulation of NHPs had hit a raw nerve in the Canadian public. In essence, Canadians

“The regulation of natural health products hit a raw nerve in the Canadian public.” demanded control over what they saw as effective, safe, natural remedies, and the end of government interference in what they saw as their natural rights. “Show us the bodies!” Given the government’s emphasis on safety, one of the public’s rallying cries was: “Show us the bodies!” People argued that there were many other areas (tobacco, alcohol, pharmaceutical drugs, motor vehicle safety) where the government could get a much better health return on its investment than in regulating NHPs, where safety had never been an issue. There were no

b odies. Indeed there has never been a registered death attributed to any NHP. This led to public questioning of the government’s motives, and soon fingers were pointed at the pharmaceutical industry. Many believed that, with the rapid increase in value of the NHP market, the pharmaceutical companies wanted better access to this multi-billion-dollar market. Imposing regulations that required expensive and time-consuming approval of NHPs was viewed by some as a strategy to move control into the hands of those with substantial enough resources to do this, eliminating the smaller players. Recommendations overlooked Health Canada responded to this public outcry by suspending regulations that were to have come into effect in January 1998, and by establishing the Advisory Panel on NHPs. This led to a full public review of NHP regulation by Health Canada’s Standing Committee on Health, which was published in November 1998. Four months later the government responded by accepting all 53 of the Standing Committee’s recommendations. At the same time the Health Minister created the Office of NHPs to pursue this agenda. Some four years later, in a private member’s bill, James Lunney pointed out that over a million people had communicated displeasure to the government about proposed NHP regulation, and he introduced Bill C-420, which was essentially

“There were many other areas (tobacco, alcohol, pharmaceutical drugs, motor vehicle safety) where the government could get a much better “The problem with Health Canada is that the agency enforces the same legislation that health return on its investment than in regulating NHPs” it creates, while being in relationship with many of world’s wealthiest corporations.” 6 | Health Action | www.hans.org

an effort to ensure and speed up the implementation of the Standing Committee’s recommendations. This bill was not passed. Post-regulation backlash In January 2004, new NHP regulations came into effect and would require all NHPs to be licensed for sale in Canada. In addition, a site license was required by manufacturers, packagers, labelers and importers of NHPs. However, in stark contrast to public demands, Health Canada’s earlier pronouncements and the Standing Committee’s report, NHPs were included as a subset of drugs, instead of being put into a third category subject to its own criteria as many had suggested. This is of particular interest because in 2004, while in opposition, Stephen Harper issued the following public statement under the heading “Moving Forward on Health Care Reform: Natural Health Products”: Canadians voluntarily spend $1.6 billion on natural health products to promote personal health. Yet Health Canada continues to remove effective natural health products from the marketplace and shut down research into them because they are regulated under a drug-style rather than food-style regulatory regime. Natural health products would benefit from moving towards a more foodstyle regulatory regime as outlined in Dr. James Lunney’s Private Members Bill C-420. This would make regulating natural health products more in line with the safety record and non-patentable nature of these products. Regulation will be required to ensure Good Manufacturing Practices, inspections, product testing and quality assessment of health claims that will afford Canadians both the assurances and the access they have been seeking. Stephen Harper will pass Dr. James Lunney’s Bill C-420 in order to regulate natural health products as “food-style” rather than “drug-style” products. Stephen Harper will increase federal research into natural health products. It is worth noting that Mr. Harper, in this public statement, agreed with many

Canadians that NHPs were regulated under a drug-style rather than food-style regulatory regime. Clearly, the thrust of Mr. Harper’s promise was to make sure that NHPs were to be treated more like foods than drugs, in large part because of their excellent safety record. He also promised to pass the Lunney bill. What has happened since? Safety record overlooked The simple reality is that the government has failed to make sure that NHPs are treated more like foods than drugs. In short, the government has failed to respond to the primary concerns of the Canadian public in not acknowledging the extraordinary safety record of NHPs. Instead, NHPs are now subject to unnecessarily rigorous requirements.

“Mr. Harper agreed that NHPs were regulated under a drug-style rather than food-style regulatory regime.” This has had the effect of driving NHPs off the market in part because safety may not be documented (despite a long history of traditional use) and also because of the high cost of demonstrating efficacy. Our members report that many remedies they seek are no longer available, and that U.S. producers of NHPs have been frustrated by Canadian regulations to the point that many have stopped shipping to Canada altogether. A further concern is the chilling effect of these regulations on new product development. Adding to the confusion, there seems to be a contradiction between official estimates of products lost and the public’s perception of this. This is not helped by the inclusion of many seemingly regular commercial products, such as Colgate and Crest toothpastes, Red Bull and Rolaids, requiring a natural product number (NPN) and therefore being included in statistics showing the number of NHPs on the market. 7 | Health Action | www.hans.org

Slowness in processing applications for NPNs, postponing of deadlines (currently it is until further notice) and continuing public and industry dissatisfaction confirm that the regulations are not working. Seven years ago, Prime Minister Harper pledged support for what our members are asking, namely a return to a more food-style regulatory regime. Not only has this not happened, the regulations have moved more towards the drug end of the spectrum. Re-evaluation required It is not too late to rethink the whole process and return to the public’s number-one demand and the Standing Committee’s position (and the Lunney bill) to change the status of NHPs from a subset of the drug category and establish a true third category with its own regulations. This would be much simpler than the present situation as it would recognize the inherent safety of NHPs and thus greatly simplify the requirement to demonstrate safety. The requirement of efficacy could also be greatly simplified by having two tiers in this third category. NHPs bearing no claims would be exempt from any proof of efficacy, while those making claims would have to demonstrate their validity. While manufacturers may want to make health claims on labels, we believe that consumers would be more than willing to give up health claims in return for the freedom to choose these products. For this to happen, the current regulations should be suspended indefinitely and the whole process subjected to an independent review. H

Smart Meters: What are the Risks? by Jim Waugh

N

o doubt you are aware of the smart meter program that BC Hydro began moving ahead in July. The $930-million program was announced in 2008 by then Premier Gordon Campbell to allow BC Hydro to replace existing analog electric meters with smart meters for all of its 1.8 million customers. The smart meter program concerns me deeply because there are significant safety, health and privacy issues that BC Hydro is not disclosing to the public. I feel an urgent need to tell as many people as possible why the smart meter program is a really bad idea and what we can do to opt out of it. Why be concerned about smart meters? Smart meters using wireless technology are being installed in many American states and European countries (Idaho and Italy used fibre-optic connections rather than wireless). The installations have been met with intense opposition from concerned citizens. Why are these people angry and pro-

testing smart meters with such vigour? They are concerned that wireless radiation from smart meter networks will compound their existing exposure to harmful radio-frequency (RF) radiation and increase their risks of illness. There have been numerous reports of people becom-

We are being exposed to high levels of RF radiation, whether we choose to or not, from sources such as cell antenna towers, Wi-Fi, cellphones, cordless

phones and other wireless technologies. In May 2011, the World Health Organization (WHO)/International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) announced that RF radiation had been classified as “possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B).” Smart meters will add to the RF contamination in our homes, unnecessarily. A significant percentage of the population (about 35 percent) feel the effects of RF radiation through symptoms like headaches, confusion, tinnitus, insomnia, fatigue, irritability and dizziness, and flulike symptoms. A segment of the population, approximately three to five percent, suffer with acute sensitivities to radio frequencies much like allergic reactions that can be quite severe and debilitating. Scientists are concerned about the strong link between human-made radiation and increases in reported cases of childhood and adult leukemia and brain tumours. Cases of autism have increased by 6,000 percent in recent years and new cases of Alzheimer’s disease are expected to increase by 300 percent in North America. Despite our war on cancer, reported cases of lung cancer are up 50 percent,

“The safe exposure guidelines recommended by Health Canada deals only with the thermal effects of wireless radiation while ignoring the non-thermal effect.” 8 | Health Action | www.hans.org

breast cancer up 200 percent and prostate cancer up 400 percent. RF radiation has greater effects on children because their bodies are smaller and in the developing stages. By proceeding with the installation of wireless smart meters, BC Hydro is deliberately and unnecessarily risking the health of thousands of children and adults under the guise of reducing energy usage. What does Health Canada say? BC Hydro claims the RF radiation from their smart meters is not harmful to people and are within Health Canada guidelines. The truth is the safe exposure guidelines recommended by Health Canada deal only with the thermal effects of wireless radiation while ignoring the nonthermal effects. This means that if the radiation from wireless smart meters is not causing the tissue of your body to increase in temperature then you have nothing to worry about. Health Canada dismisses the biological effects of low-level RF radiation by ignoring hundreds of published research studies that document biological

effects at intensities thousands of times lower than what Health Canada deems to be safe. The biological effects over time can lead to any number of health effects including immune system and neurological disorders, and diseases including cancer. Wireless smart meter radiation can be harmful to humans and any state-

“The information stored in BC Hydro computers will over time be worth a fortune.” ments by BC Hydro to the contrary are simply not true. There is a real possibility that a large number of scenarios will occur where overlapping smart meter radiation may result in very high radiation densities. A computer model done by Sage Associates, a company located in Santa Barbara, California, demonstrated a number of situations where radiation densities

would exceed US FCC (Federal Communications Commission) guidelines. (FCC safe limit guidelines are similar to those claimed by Health Canada.) One situation was a kitchen in a single family home in which radiation spikes from a smart meter mounted on the outside wall entered the room and reflected off the major appliances, causing multiple doses to occupants. These effects would be compounded if neighbouring smart meters were in close proximity to your house. A situation I am familiar with is a townhouse complex where 15 analog electric meters are currently mounted on a wall common with an owner’s master bedroom. When BC Hydro installs the smart meters, each one will be reporting information to the wireless network 100 or more times a day resulting in excess of 1,500 radiation spikes over a 24-hour period, 365 days a year. It is very likely that similar situations will occur all over the province in long-term care facilities, daycare and preschool facilities, schools, public buildings and residential neighbourhoods.

What is the real truth about the smart meter program? The smart meter program is not about saving money and reducing energy consumption. It’s about a big company doing whatever it takes to return big profits to the provincial government: A recent newspaper article suggested that the smart meter program is designed to add value to BC Hydro for a quick BC Rail-type sale. Smart meters are about gathering and recording very detailed personal information about you and your habits and selling it to whoever pays the price, like insurance companies and other organizations with deep pockets including government agencies. The information stored in BC Hydro computers will over time be worth a fortune. Smart meters are personal surveillance devices that will record when you go to bed and when you get up, if and when you get up during the night, when you leave for work and return home, and when you’re on vacation. They will record what appliances you use and for how long.

The wireless signals they send to BC Hydro will be prone to hacking by anyone with the means and intent (according to the U.S. security firm InGuardians) because they are simply radio transmitters. Hackers have become extremely astute at stealing personal information and disrupting operating systems as the Pentagon, Sony and Apple have discovered, and I’m sure BC Hydro will not be immune. Where’s the opt-out clause? The BC Hydro smart meter program does not give customers an option to opt out. In May 2011 a law firm in the state of Maine successfully convinced the Maine Public Utilities Commission to find “that it was an unjust and unreasonable practice for Central Maine Power Company to refuse to permit residential and small commercial customers to opt out of CMP’s smart meter program.” The firm was able to prove “that because of unresolved concerns relating to health, privacy and cyber security resulting from the installation of wireless

meters on their homes,” that customers should be given a choice. This was the first time in the United States that an electric utility was ordered to give customers a choice and it will serve as a precedent for other jurisdictions. What about property values? The possibility that some customers may be successful in retaining their analog meters may have a positive effect on their long-term property values. A number of studies have been published that demonstrate stigmas such as close proximity of a residential property to high-voltage transmission lines, distribution lines, utility poles, and utility pole and ground mounted transformers can have a negative effect on values by as much as two to 20 percent. I expect that when the class action suits involving personal injury due to cellphone use currently proceeding in the United States are successful, two more property value stigmas will become cell antennas near or mounted on buildings and smart meters.

To my knowledge, smart meter installations in Canada and the United States have not resulted in significant energy savings because smart meters cannot save energy. Electrical energy savings can only be realized by changing customer habits. If a person has been conscientious and following the suggestions for electrical energy conservation that BC Hydro has been promoting for a number of years, he/she may realize a cost saving by baking cookies for the grandchildren at 3:00 am rather than 3:00 pm or doing the laundry at 2:00 in the morning, but it is a scenario that is unlikely and totally beyond the control of BC Hydro. Get the facts There are a couple of YouTube videos that I encourage you to watch that you will enjoy: • The first one, about 4½ minutes long, is narrated by Jerry Day and is a good-natured look at some of the chilling facts about smart meters: http://youtube. com/watch?v=8JNFr_j6kdI

• The second one is about 32 minutes in length and is presented by Rob States, an electrical engineer in California who has the experience and expertise to clearly explain how smart meters will impact your health: http://youtube.com/ watch?v=FLeCTaSG2-U BC Hydro customers will not benefit from the smart meter program and we will be forced, without our permission, to bear the risks. This is not right and we must demonstrate our concerns by opting out. Send a letter to BC Hydro and others who should be notified of your concerns. Drop the Pounds with HCG Naturopathic doctors and dieters weigh in on popular program by Sondi Bruner

M

arian Wilkins has tried every diet under the sun. You name it, she’s done it. And despite a healthy diet and active lifestyle, with each eating plan she’d always reach the same weight plateau. “I struggled and struggled. Nothing was happening and I was getting very frustrated,” she says. “I couldn’t lose this last 20 pounds; it was stuck to me like glue.” This is a familiar story to Dr. Michael Lederman, a naturopath at South Granville Naturopathic Clinic (www. DrLederman.com (604) 738-3858) who has heard those words from countless clients. So he suggested a program called the HCG diet, but Wilkins thought it was just another fleeting fad―until she actually tried it. “All I could think was, ‘Oh yeah, right, another one. Another kind of diet,

and could it really work?’,” she recalls. “But it did work―I was in shock. Every week I would go and it would be like Christmas because I would see this great weight loss.”

“The diet lasts for about a month and the average weight loss is half a pound per day.” At the end of her journey, Wilkins was 54 pounds lighter, taking less medication and healthy enough to travel again. “I was amazed,” she says. “I found it so easy, I just wanted to keep going forever. I sailed through it feeling more and more terrific. I’ve never felt so well in my life, never.”

What is the HCG diet? The HCG diet originated in the 1950s and has recently rebounded in popularity. HCG stands for human chorionic gonadotropin. It’s a hormone produced by pregnant women and it uses stored fat to nourish developing babies. Coupled with a 500-calorie-a-day eating plan, the diet promises accelerated weight loss success by burning fat stores, reprogramming your metabolism, controlling hunger and boosting energy. HCG is administered by injection or oral drops, and patients can choose between the pharmaceutical-grade hormone and the homeopathic version, which contains the energetic, diluted essence of HCG. The diet lasts for about a month and the average weight loss is half a pound per day. Dr. Allana Polo at the Columbia Integrated Health Center in New

“The diet promises accelerated weight loss success by burning fat stores, reprogramming your metabolism, controlling hunger and boosting energy.” 12 | Health Action | www.hans.org

estminster, who has been offering the W diet as part of her practice for a year, says that HCG is the easiest and quickest path to weight loss. (www.drallanapolo.com (778) 397-3979) “This one works better than any other diet I’ve seen. And I’ve seen a lot of diets,” she says. “This is 30 or 40 days and you can drop a phenomenal amount of weight. That’s what people want―they want results. Our world has become such an instant gratification place. You really see results in the first week, which keeps people going.” Motivation is something that many HCG patients can relate to. At 50 years old, Allan Lynds, a patient of Dr. Lederman’s, has tried a number of diets and finally found success using HCG. In three months, he lost 55 pounds, eight inches off his waist and an inch and a half from his neck. He’s still 30 pounds away from his goal, but he’s not worried about dropping the weight. “It’s the best diet I’ve ever seen. The nice thing is it’s not a pipe dream―it’s really attainable,” he says. “With this diet, you’re seeing immediate results. Once you see yourself losing 10 pounds in two weeks, it gets your body going and your mind going. It’s incredible.” Dr. Lederman has been offering the HCG program for three years now and is wholly enthusiastic about the diet’s ability to change lives. “It’s a tremendous transformation of the individual. It affects them on so many levels,” he says. “It’s very exciting. I have

a lot of passion towards this program because of the feedback. When we do the HCG diet [patients are] comfortable, they’re not hungry, they’re losing fat and they’re keeping the weight off. It’s very success-oriented.” Is the weight loss sustainable? How do people manage on 500 calories a day, and is that weight loss sustainable in the long term? Dr. Lederman and Dr. Polo say that while you are consuming less food, you are still receiving energy from the fat being burned by HCG. So

“How do people manage on 500 calories a day, and is that weight loss sustainable?” you’re still technically “eating,” just not by mouth. Dr. Lederman has also modified the diet, allowing more calories for some patients. Once dieters are finished taking HCG, they gradually increase their calories. However, no one seems to be complaining of hunger. Emma Rochester*, who used the homeopathic version of HCG under Dr. Lederman’s care, had a goal of losing 25 pounds. She ended up losing 46 pounds and dropped from a size 14 to a size 4. She says she felt great while dieting. “I felt amazing while I was doing it. I never once felt hungry. In fact, I felt

almost euphoric,” she says. “Now, my energy level has skyrocketed. I feel 20 years younger. I feel healthy, my mood’s improved, I don’t have hormonal fluctuations. I feel great, I look great, and I’m wearing clothes that I never thought I’d be able to wear.” Both Dr. Lederman and Dr. Polo also use supplements such as B vitamins, electrolytes and antioxidants, which reduce the risk of patients feeling fatigued or lightheaded while dieting. Since there are plenty of toxins stored in fat tissue, Dr. Lederman provides his patients with liver support and infrared sauna treatments to encourage detoxification, while Dr. Polo guides her patients through a detox after they finish taking HCG. Lynds remarks that part of the reason HCG has been so successful for him is it educated him about healthy eating. “It’s all about knowledge and that’s what this diet teaches you,” he says. “It’s definitely changed my outlook on food and I pay more attention to how my body reacts when I eat things like pasta, cheeses or milk.” Dr. Polo says if patients don’t return to eating junk food, they won’t gain the weight back, since HCG resets the body’s metabolism. “HCG as a hormone has the ability to reset your hypothalamus, which is your set point for your metabolism,” she says. “You should keep the weight off because the hormonal balance of your hypothalamus has actually been changed. I have patients who have been off it for close to a

year, and they’ve kept the weight off.” Lynds, Rochester and Wilkins all contend that the skills and tools they learned using the HCG diet has ensured the weight will never return. “I don’t call it a diet, actually. I think that’s actually the big secret,” Wilkins says. “It’s not a diet because a diet has a beginning and an end. This is a way of life.” Additional benefits In addition to energy and vitality, Lynds says that his mind is clearer, he can walk up and down stairs without using the handrails, and the pain from his chronic arthritis is almost completely gone. Rochester says that HCG can be useful for overall health, not just for weight loss. “I think a lot of people will focus on the HCG primarily for weight loss, but for myself it was a health choice,” she says. “There’s a lot of cancer and diabetes that runs in my family, and I was having a lot of health issues before I did it. I was perimenopausal, so I was getting pre-menopause symptoms―those are all gone now. And now I’m healthy, and I’m not at any risk for anything.” Safety concerns HCG is a legal pharmaceutical drug in Canada and the United States, but is only allowed for treating infertility. It’s not approved for weight loss. Currently, offering HCG for weight loss is called

“off-label” use. Given how complex the endocrine system is, many people have concerns about how HCG might affect them if they are not pregnant, or even female. Dr. Polo says the dose is not high enough to interfere with any hormonal processes. “The dose is so low. If you took the HCG and put it on a pregnancy stick, it would not go positive,” she says. “You’re not inducing any pregnancy symptoms.” The use of HCG is spreading in the U.S. and Canada, and it’s easy to find the protocols and HCG drops online. But

“It’s not a diet because a diet has a beginning and an end. This is a way of life.” what many online sources don’t offer is the one-to-one check-ins, the detox support and the additional vitamins and minerals. Unsupervised, risks of the HCG diet include low blood sugar, low blood pressure, malnourishment, anemia, hair loss, weakness and fatigue, which is why Dr. Polo and Dr. Lederman say working with a professional is key. “When done properly, this is a very positive experience where people feel good,” says Dr. Lederman. “So many people feel they can do it self-administered, self-supervised. But when you

have someone who knows what they’re doing walking you through the program, you have a higher likelihood of achieving your goals.” Despite its popularity, there isn’t a lot of hard data that HCG actually helps you drop the pounds. There are a few clinical trials and studies that date back to the 1970s, and most of them state that HCG doesn’t work for weight loss. But after treating more than 500 patients using the HCG program, Dr. Lederman isn’t concerned about the research because he believes that the diet works. “The success of it speaks for itself. It’s not about the research. It’s about the fact that it simply works,” he says. “I like what delivers results for people. This is the most exciting tool and program that I’ve ever been a part of. Every day, I enjoy coming in to work simply to know that I’m changing someone’s life and it’s not a band-aid. It’s treating the cause of their health concerns.” 1 H

How Weight Affects Fertility by Mandana Edalati, ND

A

healthy body weight plays an important role in fertility. Being overweight or underweight can make achieving pregnancy more difficult, mainly because of its effect on ovulation. Excess weight can lead to anovulation (absence of ovulation), which often manifests as irregular menstruation. The good news is that losing weight can restore regular menstruation and bring about healthy ovulation, thereby increasing the likelihood of pregnancy. The same goes for those who are underweight. In this case, either anovulation or irregular ovulation can be an issue. With irregular ovulation, the uterine lining may not become thick enough for the fertilized egg to sufficiently implant and grow, and, even if it does implant, sustaining the pregnancy under such circumstances is difficult, making miscarriage a likely occurrence. In a study published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, women whose body mass indexes were below 18.5 (classified as underweight) were 72 percent more likely to miscarry in their first trimester. The bottom line is that too much or too little body fat will disturb the normal hormonal balance and subsequently affect

menstruation and ovulation. Reaching a healthy weight can help reverse these issues and create a healthy environment for conception to occur. The good news With a proper daily diet plan and lifestyle modifications, both these issues can be resolved.

“A 5 to 10 percent weight loss can greatly impact ovulation.” To lose the excess weight, following a tailored weight loss dietary plan with a focus on eating whole, unprocessed foods and regular exercise can make a big difference. A 5 to 10 percent weight loss can greatly impact ovulation. For those individuals who continue to have a difficult time losing weight despite all efforts, further investigation is warranted as other conditions may be involved. For example, infertility and the difficulty behind losing weight may be caused by polycystic ovary syndrome

(PCOS), a condition in which the body’s eggs are not released from the ovaries but rather form small cysts there. For those who are underweight, a healthy nutrient-rich weight gain program will help bring about a healthier weight that supports fertility. Making healthy fats from such sources as nuts and seeds, olive oil and flaxseed oil part of every meal is an important part of this process. Although weight is only one of the factors affecting fertility, it is an important one that should not be overlooked. Aside from optimizing the chances of pregnancy, having a healthy weight also means an advantage in all facets of overall well-being: more energy, better mood and less likelihood of pregnancy-related complications such as gestational diabetes, miscarriage as well as low birth weight.1 H

6 Simple Tips to Avoid the Flu #1 Get your monthly “Immune Boost.” For years, we’ve used Engystol and Grippe Heel homeopathics for their proven effectiveness in preventing and treating colds and flu. Safe for all ages, our Immune Boost Protocol is best given by injection once a month in healthy individuals and twice a month in those who are more susceptible. It can also be administered in oral form for infants and children. Ideally, the protocol should start in September (before the flu starts spreading!) and continue monthly until March or April. #2 Vitamin C: Take one to three grams daily of a quality vitamin C. Increase to bowel tolerance (usually between six to eight grams per day) at the first sign of cold or flu.

#3 Zinc picolinate: Take 30-50 grams daily. #4 Vitamin D3: Take 2,000 to 4,000 IU daily. Increase to 10,000 IU per day for a week at the first sign of cold or flu. #5 Probiotics: Take one to two capsules per day of a high-quality probiotic (friendly bacteria) that contains different strains of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. #6 Wash your hands often, but skip antibacterial cleansers and avoid the routine use of sanitizers. These agents lead to the development of “superbugs,” highly evolved and resistant strains of microbes that lead to more severe infection and are more difficult to treat. Simple soap and clean-running water for 20 seconds (without over-drying) is

s ufficient. If you’re in an area where soap and water is not readily available, sanitizers can be helpful in a pinch. Choose a sanitizer without harmful chemicals such as CleanWell All-Natural Hand Sanitizer. Or for a product that’s a bit more germicidal, EO All-Purpose Sanitizing Wipes contain organic alcohol. They’re best for sanitizing surfaces but may be over-drying if used directly on the skin. If you’re easily susceptible to acquiring infection or if you’re immunecompromised in any way, contact a naturopathic physician to develop an individualized treatment plan. —Sharon Gurm, ND, Port Moody Naturopathic www.portmoodynaturopathic.com (604) 949-0077

Natural Healing Potential in Therapeutic Touch

Sacred (Spiritual) Space

Sacred (Spiritual) Space City life can be unhealthy, hostile and chaotic at times. By creating a sacred space, you provide yourself a sanctuary in which to rest and regenerate. A sacred space is often described as the temple or meditation room, where sacred images are present providing a focus for symbolic rituals or practices. However, a sacred space can be anywhere as long as there is awareness of the boundaries within which “the sacred” is present. Creating a protective circle to prevent intrusion can be done through visualization, or by simply creating physical boundaries with stones or specific objects. The sacred space also involves boundaries around what one does with

one’s body, speech and mind. Having cleared out the distractions that normally pull one outside oneself, one is left with the inner process. This is where the real work begins. Motivation and wisdom are vital components in how one uses their sacred space. Sacredness depends upon one’s perception and how one personally embraces it with meaning. Once meditation practice has matured, the ability to retain an inner awareness of the sacred in any place at any time is possible. That will allow us to raise our consciousness to a higher level. —Marija Djordjevic BSc, CIEHP, Vancouver, BC www.sanare.ca (604) 727-4186

Would you like to learn a powerful, proven way to help someone in pain, heal the ill, effectively support someone in final transition? Therapeutic touch is a safe, gentle, non-invasive healing method now practised by thousands of people around the world. It is a combination of ancient healing practices. The therapeutic touch practitioner uses her hands as a focus for assessing and directing energies. Therapeutic touch was developed in the early 1970s by Dolores Krieger, PhD, RN, Professor Emerita, and Dora Kunz, renowned medical intuitive. To date, it is the most researched complementary healing technique. It was taught at the master’s level at New York University in 1975, a first in the Western world. When one feels compassion to help another, it is the compassion that compels the action. An exchange of energies is intentionally directed to the patient. Everyone has an energy field about them that changes with our thoughts, emotions, intelligence, level of wellness and how tense or relaxed we are. This energy is coming and going at all times and in an orderly, balanced fashion when one is healthy. When we have a physical or emotional disease or disorder, our energy blocks and is no longer free-flowing. Therapeutic touch is highly effective in creating deep relaxation in a very short time, relieving pain, enhancing immune system function and treating psychosomatic problems. It is done with intention in a centred state, relaxing into the peace and stillness of our heart space and resonating with the patient. In this stillness, we sense unity and oneness with all life. This sense of one’s inner self can shift attitudes and stabilize interactions with others, influencing the environment and community, and benefiting the entire planet. Health & Green News... Stretch Your “So-as” Muscle to Relieve Back Pain

Why do so many North Americans suffer from back problems? One major reason is the amount of time we spend sitting. We sit at breakfast, in the car or on the bus; often we sit at work, to eat supper and then to watch TV or to read. How does this lead to back problems? To begin with, the lumbar spine is under the most stress in the seated position, especially when slouching or sitting with no support to the small of the back. An important factor that contributes to this is the hip flexor muscle, a very large muscle that is often overlooked. The psoas (pronounced so-as) muscle is attached to the front of all the lumbar vertebrae and to the inside of the upper leg near the groin. This muscle lies deep inside the abdomen until it passes under the inguinal ligament on its way to the thigh. Its function is to flex the hip and it is active when you lift your leg. Part of the problem arises because this muscle is shortened when we sit and is seldom stretched by normal everyday activities. If it is shorter on one side, it can twist the lower spine. If it is short on both sides, it leads to a swayback and puts pressure on the low back vertebrae. In acute low back strain, it is a spasm in this muscle that makes it hard to stand

up straight or to lift your leg to put your socks and shoes on, and often causes pain on taking a deep breath. Other symptoms of psoas spasm are pain or numbness in the front of the thigh, pain in the groin (often mistaken for ovary pain), pain at the bottom of the rib cage, or turning-out of one foot. One of the best methods to prevent back problems is a psoas stretch. Lie flat on your back on the floor or a hard surface and bring one knee up to your chest, holding it with both hands. Bring it as far as you can comfortably, making sure the other leg is flat. If you have knee problems, hold your leg behind the knee. It is the straightleg side that is being stretched. Hold it for 30 seconds and then do the same with the other leg. This is best done in the morning and again at night. If you are very flexible, you may find that you get a better stretch lying on a bench or the edge of a bed so that while one knee is up to the chest, the other leg is dropped over the edge. If you already have back pain, this will give some relief but actual correction will require professional treatment by your family chiropractor. —Karin Mattern, DC, Nanaimo, BC drkarinmattern.shawwebspace.ca (250) 758-7022

Welcome New Professional Member View the HANS Wellness Directory at www.hans.org Water Documentary: A Deeper Look at Vitalization When water flows freely from our taps and faucets, it’s easy to take it for granted. But once you watch the documentary Water: The Great Mystery at www.bestwater.ca/video about the hidden powers of water, you’re guaranteed to reflect upon what’s in your glass. Water molecules have been found to cluster together in a specific way that is capable of storing information. In other words, they have the capacity for memory. “The chemical composition of water is important,” says Florian Scharlock of Best Water For You, a family business that sells EWO water vitalization products in Canada. “Certain things, like contaminants, you don’t want in your water. Beyond that, there also seems to be some evidence that the structure—how the molecules align—is of huge importance, and that this structure is affected by electromagnetic fields, movement and even human emotion.” Experiments have shown that water responds to music at a cellular level. Water crystals flash frozen after being

exposed to classical music look symmetrical, while heavy metal produces jagged crystalline structures. Plants grown in water that has been revitalized—that is, treated to have a healthy, re-energized molecular structure—grow more, are more nutritious and require less water than plants grown in regular tap water. An interesting experiment that is highlighted in the documentary examined the blood of patients with heart disease, arthritis and lung disease. Noticeable differences occurred in samples taken before and after the patients drank revitalized water: their blood pH was altered, allowing for more oxygen transport. Although the concept of water revitalization is relatively new in North America, Scharlock points out that it is more established in Europe, and about half of four- and five-star hotels in Switzerland and Austria have water vitalization devices. A year ago, after much research, the Scharlock family chose to distribute EWO water systems from Austria, which

use three mechanisms to revitalize water: spinning, magnetism and information transfer. This system has been adopted by customers including the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, the provincial parliament of Lower Austria and city hall in Moscow, Russia. It’s well known that water is a major component of the human body—70 to 90 percent, depending on our age. We consume an average 2.5 litres daily through drinking and diet, and absorb another 1.5 litres during bathing. Given our inherent connection to H2O, access to a clean, pure supply is vital. What is also vital to know—and what the documentary compellingly argues—is that water is actually alive and can influence us for better or for worse. Ready, Re-set, Go! Neural reset therapy for pain, tension, posture, flexibility, joint function and more by Sondi Bruner

A

s an elite cyclist and coach, Larry Zimich has been approached countless times over the last 25 years by companies and individuals who want him to try their products. He walks a fine line between skepticism and openness, so when a client suggested he go for a session of neural reset therapy with naturopath Dr. Paula Fainstat, he wasn’t sure what to expect. But after the first session, he noticed an immediate difference that compelled him to return for another treatment. “I stood up and everything felt different,” he says. “I don’t really know how to explain how different it felt―I felt balanced over my feet, and my body felt really calm and really relaxed. So I thought, wow, maybe there is something to what’s happening.” It wasn’t enough for Zimich to simply feel good―he wanted to measure whether the therapy was creating a concrete difference in his athletic performance. He began to measure and record data, and five weeks later, he was impressed to see that his speed had improved by almost 10 percent, he was feeling better than he had in years and he was able to recover quicker from challenging workouts.

“People were actually asking me, ‘What’s up?’,” he says. “They noticed that much of a difference. With elite athletes, we’re trying to make differences at that top end and that’s usually the difference between winning and losing. So if someone can make a difference like that, it’s pretty big.” Convinced by his own success, Zimich decided to team up with Dr. Fainstat to develop a small pilot study to measure and track the effects of neural reset therapy (NRT) on athletic performance. Regressing back to your childhood, but in a good way Dr. Paula Fainstat (www.drpaulafainstat.com (604) 222-2433) is a Vancouver-based naturopath with a chiropractic background who has spent almost 20 years perfecting the NRT technique. She refers to NRT as “anti-aging for the joints and alignment,” and says it brings the body toward the original, natural state we were born with. “When you look at young children, you can see how well set they are, how naturally upright they are, how grounded they are in their feet,” she points out. “People have lost a sense of what it’s like. They don’t say, ‘I’m out of align22 | Health Action | www.hans.org

ment, I want better posture, my balance isn’t what it used to be,’ because all of these symptoms creep up so gradually over a lifetime that people have forgotten what it’s like to feel normal.” NRT can improve pain, tension, posture, breathing, flexibility, headaches, joint function, balance, neurological conditions and, like Zimich discovered, athletic performance. Patients report feeling calmer, lighter and taller, along with experiencing an improved range of motion and reduced pain, usually starting with the first session. How neural reset therapy works NRT isn’t merely about fixing alignments at the local level―Dr. Fainstat moves deeper to balance the body neurologically as well as structurally. She views the brain as a biological computer that needs to be reset, or rebooted, and uses NRT to affect the nervous system in order to change alignment, posture, and muscle-firing patterns. During a treatment, Dr. Fainstat evaluates a patient’s posture and muscles to determine where the distorted alignments are located. Then, she taps the reflexes related to these imbalances, which activates the central nervous system and

prepares it to be reset. Finally, she uses a series of dextrose injections along the spine or in the head to block pain fibres, restore local nerves and promote deeper healing. “We’re having an immediate neurological effect, while we’re also changing the firing patterns of the muscles and the holding patterns of the connective tissues,” Dr. Fainstat says. Patients like Zimich appreciate the holistic approach of the treatment. “The body is whole, so you can’t just have one area that works and the rest doesn’t work,” he says. “If a certain area of my body isn’t performing how I think it should be, a lot of times she doesn’t even treat that particular area. She goes to somewhere totally different on the body, treats that area and the next thing I know, it worked.” He also credits NRT for helping improve his recovery after a serious cycling accident in September, where he broke 13 bones, punctured a lung and spent two days in the intensive care unit. “Because I went into that accident feeling the best I’ve felt for ages, I was able to come out of it like I have. When you have an accident like that and you’re not in really good shape beforehand, you’re not going to come out of it like that.” Dr. Fainstat is excited to see the outcome of the study once it is completed this winter and looks forward to showing how NRT can apply to everyone. “I look at athletes as a microcosm of the general public. Their level of exercise produces a high level of metabolic waste,” she says. “When an athlete shows improved recovery and heart rate function within a short period of time with NRT, that says a huge amount about the potential health benefits for the non-athletic person.” 1 H

Repair, Heal and Regenerate Accelerate your healing with PRP by Sondi Bruner

W

hen Barry Roberts* told his family doctor about the knee pain he had developed, he was told to rest and wear a knee brace. But when the discomfort persisted, Roberts knew he needed to do something more. He contacted his naturopath, Dr. Phoebe Chow, who suggested a new procedure called platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP). Though he had never heard of PRP before, once he heard that athletes like Tiger Woods had used the therapy with success, the avid golfer was convinced. “I basically said, ‘Let’s try it’,” Roberts says. “A few days after, I could feel a difference. Now I don’t feel any pain when I’m walking or anything like that. It’s quite amazing.” For the last three years, Dr. Chow (www.drphoebechow.com (604) 3270021) has been offering PRP to patients and has seen successful results in over 25 cases. Platelet-rich plasma can treat acute and chronic pain, arthritis, injuries and joint wear and tear, plus it can be used for facial rejuvenation or to strengthen weak vaginal muscles due to aging or childbirth. “It’s basically tapping into the treasures in the blood,” says Dr. Chow. “It’s very much in line with the naturopathic philosophy―you’re using your own body fluid to heal itself.” What is platelet-rich plasma and how does it work? The platelets found in our blood are rich in growth factors, which play an important role in our body’s ability to repair, heal and regenerate tissues. PRP therapy

was first performed more than 20 years ago and is beginning to gain momentum here in North America for its remarkable ability to accelerate healing. Since its inception, PRP has been applied in numerous fields, and studies suggest that it can help a wide variety of conditions. “Basically, the body is doing it [healing] anyway―that’s what the platelets are designed for,” says Dr. Chow. “They get attracted to the site of injury or inflam-

What we do is enhance and accelerate that process by concentrating the growth factors from the blood and then adding it to the area that is needed.” Dr. Chow applies treatments locally to ligaments and muscles to enhance and quicken the healing process, and she also uses PRP intravenously for an overall “organ tuneup.” “The beautiful thing about the body is it has the widsom to distribute the growth factors,” she points out. “If there are certain areas that are a little bit weaker, then the body would grab the growth factors and then send them to that area.” To perform the treatment, a small amount of a patient’s own blood is taken and spun in a centrifuge. The plasma is 24 | Health Action | www.hans.org

separated from the blood cells and the portion with the highest concentration of platelets is isolated. Then, this platelet-rich plasma is injected into the site of pain (Dr. Chow also uses vitamins, homeopathics and ozone as needed). Since the treatment involves patients using their own blood, there’s no risk of infection, rejection or contracting a disease. Dr. Chow has received excellent feedback from patients like Roberts, who found relief from discomfort and pain. Using PRP therapy, she’s saved patients from knee replacements, corrected longstanding injuries and improved interminable pain. “It’s such a wonderful thing to see what it can do for a person,” she says. The healing process is gradual, but patients typically notice a difference in pain level and mobility after about three weeks, and after six weeks, the results are complete. And you only need one treatment to see results. “So far, most people just require one treatment, so people do feel a long-lasting effect,” Dr. Chow says. “It’s not like massage or acupuncture where you have to do it twice a week for 12 treatments. It’s a big layout at one time, but over the long run you actually save money.” H 1

The Liver: A Traditional Chinese Medicine Perspective by Steven K. H. Aung, MD, OMD, PhD, FAAFP, CM

I

n traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), balancing and harmonizing the body requires maintaining a healthy liver. According to the holistic perspective of this ancient medical practice, a healthy liver influences an individual’s health in many positive ways, helping to maximize our quality of life physically, mentally and spiritually. A healthy liver is necessary for digestion and detoxification, mental stability and harmony, and spiritual grounding to make sound decisions. The liver is considered a zang (solid) organ that is located in the middle jiao (body cavity). In its function as a yin organ, the liver controls the smooth flow of energy and nutrition. The main energetic functions of the liver are to mediate the flow of qi (vital energy) and to store the blood, while the main spiritual functions of the liver are to control a person’s congenital (present at birth) body constitution, determination and decision-making.

The liver is paired with the fu (hollow) organ, the gallbladder, which moves and excretes toxic end products. The liver and gallbladder function physiologically in homeostasis, while also balancing and harmonizing with the other organs―like the heart, lung and kidneys―according to the Five Elements Theory.

“The liver is considered to be within the domain of the wood element, and is most active in spring.” Are you a wood personality? According to the Five Elements Theory, each individual has a certain personality and nature that corresponds with one of the five elements, which are wood, fire, earth, metal and water. The liver is considered to be within the domain of

the wood element, and is most active in spring. Individuals’ corresponding element can be determined by observing the shape of their hands. People who are considered “wood personalities” have middle finger lengths that are equivalent to the length of their palms, with many fine lines on the palm’s surface. They also display nonprominent thenar (palm muscles at the base of the thumb) and hypothenar muscles (which control the little finger), with a tendency toward Dupuytren’s contracture, where the fingers curl towards the palm and cannot fully straighten. People of wood personalities always enjoy mother nature and the colour green, and can be short-tempered. Some can be prone to alcohol addictions. Wood personalities may often come into conflict with individuals who are of the elements metal and fire. In contrast, they are more sympathetic and comfortable with individuals of the elements earth and water.

“On the face, the liver is frequently reflected by the condition of the cheeks, known in Western medicine as rosacea, especially on the left side of the face.” 26 | Health Action | www.hans.org

Signs of liver problems Liver problems, imbalances or disorders have been shown in TCM to correspond with changes in vision, as the sensory organ associated with the liver is the eyes. Emotionally, the liver is negatively associated with anger and frustration, but can also be positively associated with generosity. Angry feelings, foul odours and shouting sounds directly stimulate and affect the liver. The basic taste corresponding to the liver in TCM is sour, and its sensitive climate condition is wind. A windy day will cause liver qi flow to become stagnant and unbalanced, producing symptoms of dizziness and vertigo. Depression is always associated with liver qi stasis. When the liver is hyperactive, it “overworks” and produces liver “heat.” Liver heat can then cause increased blood pressure, hot flashes and migraine headaches. Liver heat most frequently manifests as fissures and cracks on the surface of the right side of the posterior tongue along its edge. In extreme cases, such as cancer, the manifestations of liver heat can include purplish discolouration and lesions on the tongue. It can also be apparent as redness on the palms of the hand and soles of the feet. On the face, the liver is frequently reflected by the condition of the cheeks, known in Western medicine as rosacea, especially on the left side of the face. Alcoholism results in liver irritation, producing liver heat that can also clinically manifest as rosacea. According to TCM, every organ controls a specific tissue of the human body. The finger and toe nails present the main clinical manifestations of the liver. If the liver is constantly irritated, it is reflected by u n h e a l t h y , thick nails with lines or bumps. Bumpy nails reveal that the liver qi is stagnant. A lined nail that peels easily shows that the liver qi is deficient. Nails with thick lines indicate that there is excess “heat” in the liver.

Therefore, in TCM, physiological or pathological disorders of the liver can be detected and diagnosed by observing external manifestations of the internal disturbance.

terminate at “Liver Point 14” in the lower region of the chest. All points along the liver meridian have a direct specific action for the liver, as well as other bodily influences.

Diet and herbal therapies also play an important role in the maintenance of the whole body system. The consumption of green vegetables and sour foods, according to TCM diet therapy, and the use of herbal medications, such as milk thistle and woodberries, stimulate and regenerate the liver and maintain its health. Physical, mental and spiritual training exercises can also impart balance to the liver by actively stretching the muscles and tendons. Medical Qi Gong (body-mind and spirit meditation) and Tai Chi Chuan are particularly effective when used for self-care, by incorporating the mind and spirit to heal the body. In Aung Medical Qi Gong practice, Breathing Exercise #3 is most optimal for the liver. In this concentration exercise, the liver energy is cleansed and tonified, and qi flow is unblocked and realigned by inhaling, holding, inhaling and exhaling the breath in sequence. The practitioner should alternate between completing a full sequence of breaths while visualizing white, and then a full sequence while visualizing green. The white sequence should correspond to containment of the breath within a “small circle” from the crown of the head to the bottom of the abdomen, while the green sequence should expand the visualization to a “large circle” from the crown to the anus. Specific phonation sounds for enhancement of the liver to accompany the exercise might involve uttering the sound “SHEARRR” with the chakra sound “RAMMM.” 1 H

Caring for the liver Since the TCM approach to caring for the liver involves the totality of physical, mental and spiritual well-being, there are many natural approaches for an individual to choose. Acupuncture treatments involve inserting a needle into points along meridians to stimulate the influences of the organ to then integrate and harmonize the whole body system. If the body is out of balance, a medical acupuncturist must employ extensive information, knowledge and experience to adjust and balance the patient according to TCM theory and the body’s needs. In addition to acupuncture, acupressure and Tuina-An Mor (manipulation and massage) are very helpful treatments in caring for the liver.

Dr. Steven K. H. Aung is a geriatric and family physician and a TCM practitioner and teacher. He seeks to blend Eastern, Western and natural medicine in his medical clinic in Edmonton, Alberta. At the University of Alberta, Dr. Aung is a clinical professor in the departments of medicine and family medicine and adjunct professor in the faculty of extension and the faculty of rehabilitation medicine. Dr. Aung is also a founding member and current president of the World Natural Medicine Foundation, the Canadian Medical Acupuncture Society and the International Buddhist Friends Association. www.aung.com

The liver’s meridian system The basic tenets of TCM hold that every organ has its own meridian pathway that is paired on the left and right sides of the body. It is along these pathways that qi flows. Qi flows both from the outside to the inside and the inside to the outside of the body through acupoints, so as to exchange energy between an individual and their environment. The liver has its own meridian system, beginning at “Liver Point 1” on the big toes. From there, the liver meridian runs along the ankles, proceeds up the insides of the knees, and continues through the groin region, across the abdomen, to

“If the liver is constantly irritated, it is reflected by unhealthy, thick nails with lines or bumps.”
