THANKS TO OUR VOLUNTEERS! by Volunteer Chair, Louise Punnett

Looking forward to 2018! The Penticton Board of Trade was part of the inception of the non-profit Okanagan Summer School of the Arts (OSA) in 1960. It was seen as a major initiative to draw students, families and visitors during the summer season.

OSA is now a year round facility with great potential to bring cultural tourism visitors to our region. We are also in the unique position of taking care of one of Penticton’s most important heritage assets. After years of relying on grants, donations, memberships and other revenue sources, we recognize the need for on-going funding to maintain and restore the building, while continuing to develop the destination art school. We have launched the 2018 Sponsorship Program and you can learn about it on page 6.

Look forward to new programs and events, such as, Okanagan Valley Art Fair, being developed by new board member Bill Everden, the chair of the Exhibition Committee. It will be held on May 5th & 6th. This is an exciting event showcasing artists from up and down the Okanagan Valley. The Exhibition Committee has a call to artists for 2018, ‘Art From the HeArt’, which will open on February 15th, 2018. These events are great opportunities to see work by not only your favourite artists but to discover some new ones as well. Georgia Krebs, President

SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR FUNDERS

Teamwork makes all the difference in the world. One of our great moments at the Shatford was transitioning the Auditorium for three different events on one day during the Christmas season. Thanks to great organization and pitching in by many volunteers, the auditorium was changed from the Farmer’s Market Venue, a Christmas party for children and their families in the afternoon and then to a dinner venue for 160 people in the evening! And we had fun and many laughs along the way.

Some of the team that helped on that busy day, from left: Volunteer Chair Louise Punnett, Leslie Manion, Terri Maltais, Louanne Houston, Marlane McMaster, Janet Hitchen, Carol Perry, Trish Harris, Dick Harris, Jane Shaak and Bruce Kay. Another example is one of the volunteer teams that worked hard in the week after Christmas, spent three days cleaning and painting the auditorium.

Working in a team builds relationships and fosters creative thinking and idea sharing. 2018 presents many opportunities to create new teams in the following areas: custodial, garden, youth programs and baking for example. Please contact us to see how your volunteer needs can be met working with us at the Shatford! SPECIAL THANKS TO 2017 VOLUNTEERS: Brian Baldwin, Diane Bourgeois, Laara Branzen, Scotty Durisek, Diane Edgar, Noriko Elder, Lorna Gaidica, Diane Gane, Jill Hansen, Trish Harris, Louanne Houston, Bud Howell, Bruce Kay, Andreas Krebs, Mikos Lamdropolous, Terri Maltais, Leslie Manion, John McGladdery, Marlane McMaster, Jim O’Brien, Niels Pedersen, Carol Perry, Deb Pfeiffer, Victoria Ritchie, Shane Ritchie, Norberto Rodriguez, Deb Tougas, Roger Yeo, Ellen Yang and Carol Zumpano.

Note to Volunteers, please mark your calendars: The Volunteer & Membership Appreciation is being planned for Thursday, April 19, 2018.

It was a real pleasure to have Marylin (Cleland) Barnay, Hugh Cleland and Carolyn Cleland come to the Shatford Centre at the 1957 Pen High Reunion on October 4th, 2017. This is as close as it comes to having founding director, Eva Cleland, at the Okanagan School of the Arts, Shatford Centre! It was a joy to reminisce with Hugh and Marylin about their mother and the tremendous influence that their family continues to have for arts and culture in this region. Karen Collins, Treasurer of the Okanagan School of the Arts and also President of the Okanagan Historical Society gave a talk on Eva Cleland at the Brown Bag Lunch at the Museum when the Class of 1957 was here. It was perfect to have Marylin, Hugh and Carolyn in the audience. The Okanagan School of the Arts and members of the Pen High Alumni are working together on a Brown Bag Lunch presentation on the history of Pen High. This will take place at 12 noon, on September 18th, 2018, to coincide with the 1958 Pen High Class 60th Reunion. being at the Shatford Centre. PLAN YOUR NEXT MEETINGS AT THE HISTORIC SHATFORD CENTRE!

We offer a wide range of facilities, expertise and resources to host your fundraisers, meetings, celebrations, reunions, conferences, weddings & more. Honouring Our Past ~ Gearing Up For 2018! SHATFORD CENTRE DIRECTORS ARE GEARING UP FOR 2018! The Okanagan School of the Arts, Shatford Centre is gearing up to offer art and music courses, an arts fair, writing conference and more, as well as counting down for its 100th anniversary celebration in 2021. “2018 promises to be an exhilarating year for the Shatford Centre, Okanagan School of the Arts (SCOSA). We have four new directors joining the board; Bill Everden, Harriet Rogan, Sharon Snow and Sue Gibbons,” said Georgia Krebs, Pen High alumni class of 1969 and president of the board. “I’m excited to be working with everyone on the board of directors, they have a wide variety of expertise and interests which enhances all aspects of the SCOSA.”

Lytton Shatford with his wife, Lavina, as a young couple

Penticton’s Shatford Centre is named after Lytton W. Shatford, the only senator appointed from the South Okanagan and Similkameen area and one of the founders of the Southern Okanagan Land Company, which bought the Ellis estate. Born in Nova Scotia, Senator Shatford was employed with a wholesale firm in Halifax before coming to BC in 1893, during one of British Columbia’s gold rushes. With his brother, W T Shatford, he established the W T Shatford General Store in Fairview. Branches were also set up in Camp McKinney and Hedley.

The Shatford Centre is located at 760 Main Street and is named after Senator Lytton W. Shatford, who represented the South Okanagan Similkameen provincially and federally.

Thanks to the hard work of those involved with the Okanagan School of the Arts, combined with federal funding, the Shatford Centre started housing the school in 2011. It has remained a vibrant cultural centre since.

After moving to the coast, Mr Shatford was identified with many business enterprises both here and at the coast. He was very well known throughout the province but particularly in the Okanagan and Similkameen valleys.

This year OSA has a new board of directors in place, who came on board in late 2017, and much to offer in the way of courses and conferences.

A chairman of the Fairview School Board for several years, he was elected in 1903, re-elected in 1907, 1909 and in 1912 by acclamation. Mr Shatford served as President of the B C Life Assurance Company, President and Managing Director of the B C Financial and Investment Company and Director of the Bank of Vancouver until 1912, when he became its Vice-President and General Manager. Shatford was elected to the British Columbia Legislative Assembly in the 1903 provincial election as a Conservative representing the riding of Similkameen. He remained in the legislature until 1917 when he was appointed to the Canadian Senate by Prime Minister Sir Robert Borden. The July 5th issue of the Penticton Herald describing a visit by the new Senator prior to his leaving for Ottawa said:

“The Similkameen is fortunate in having its representative selected for a Senatorial position, for although Senator Shatford’s residence in the official order-in-council is given as Vancouver, where he has lived for the seven years, it can be taken for granted that he will always keep in mind the needs of this section of the province and the Similkameen will not lose by his translation to the more important position.”

In 2004 when School District 67 considered demolishing the Ellis and Shatford buildings, public outcry, heated meetings and public concern resulted in the school district and City of Penticton agreeing that each would be responsible for one of these cherished red brick heritage buildings. The city committed to community use for the Shatford and the school district incorporated the Ellis into its new Pen High campus.

Of the nine board members, four are Pen High Alumni or Grads. Some of these board members have several goals for the year ahead.

Lytton, Lavina & Family

Lytton Shatford died in office in 1920. In 1921, the City of Penticton opened the Senator Shatford school in his honour. Initially there were 250 names put forth for the school. It was decided the new school would be the Senator Shatford School, because he had virtually been a resident of Penticton during the time that he and his brother W. T. Shatford formed the Southern Okanagan Land Co. and put Penticton on the map. Mr. Shatford was the principal driving force in obtaining government funding towards construction of the new school building, which had a final cost of $140,000. Information in this article was taken from the July 17, 1917, Penticton Herald newspaper. Photo credits to the Penticton Museum for Lytton Shatford and his family.

Volunteer coordinator Louise Punnett, class of 1969, looks forward to bringing the Shatford Centre out into the community, with a real push for more programs. On her wish list is a new laptop computer for doing presentations, more programs and events for volunteers to help with, a training program for kitchen volunteers and a mentorship program for new volunteers to learn from seasoned veterans. While Dick Harris, class of 1968, Director of Restoration and Beautification, has much he’d also like to accomplish in the year ahead. Among them are roof repairs and ongoing painting and renovations of the existing meeting rooms. As far as the building itself he would like to see an upgrade of the fire/sprinkler system and construction of the patio in the garden and extension of the raised vegetable beds. If you would like to help, give us a call at 250770-7668 or e-mail info@shatfordcentre.com.
