B/17, Vihang Darshan, Sai wadi, Andheri East, Mumbai- 400069.

I am a young aspiring Architect, eager to explore, grow and learn new ways to approach design. These 5 years of architecture has helped me develop a holistic approach towards learning, designing and detailing. I believe architecture is an amalgamation of context, culture and user experience which I try to actively incorporate in my design.

Urban form before transformation held together a certain kind of social life. Now that the edge conditions have changed, they have in some ways transformed that social life but have also created alternative opportunities for people to inhabit.

Analysing the building type by two edge conditions soft edge and hard edge.

• The edge with free-flowing movement of bodies, activities and objects

• The edge becoming more and more privatized, restricting the accessibility for the people slowly.

Typological Changes & Life

Transformations of Mill lands in Mumbai?

Thesis Dissertation | Lower Parel | Sem 9

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the urban form of mill lands and everyday practices and to study the transforming urban form and house form through the changing economic networks over a period of time and how it shapes the social life.

This leads to the question,

What is the social life and land utilisation in the case of transformation of the industrial landscape of the Mumbai mills?

What are the shifts happening in these mill lands?

How are they affecting the everyday practices, claims and negotiations of the people living and working there? What are the changes happening in the building type and what does it afford?

01.
Ecologies of Dawn Mill post transformation

The building type as well as the edge condition was such that it created porosity with the inside and outside. Even though it wasn’t an enclosed settlement, there was a sense of security because of the large space in front of their house where people used to inhabit the space all day long.

The line between public semi-public and private is blurred and every space had degrees of ‘publicness’. The Idea of Home was everything but the four walls.

Whereas today, the building type itself segregates the spaces. The arrangement inside the house is fixed and defined. The only way of interacting with people is through windows and balconies. It allows visual connection but at the same time restricts physical interactions.

Public, semi-public and private spaces are prominent. The Idea of home now is just the four walls.

Baithi Chawls are single-story tenements arranged in rows (baithi means “to sit”). The baithi chawls are compact and closely packed to each other like a series of doors and corridors.

Transformations of the house form to accommodate for the new activities on the ground floor line the edge of the streets changing the overall experience. The edge is softened offering a part of the house front to the street, allowing it to blend into these extensions.

Street with shops becomes an integral part of social life in the present time. The shift in the economic network and widening of the sidewalks is reason enough for old spaces to be converted into spaces of income generation.

The shops extended themselves on the street and become a source of interaction between the shopkeepers and the people working in the commercial hubs.

Hardening of Edges :

The edges have become visually and physically non-permeable. It acts as a barrier edge.

Interiorized Relationship :

As the edges are hardened it forces us to change according to the given space. The gated community restricts the movement leading to fragmentation of spaces.

The site of demonstration is the Modern Mill Compound, Mahalakshmi with area of 6770 sqm that currently holds 160 units with area of 160 sq.ft each.

Multiple entrances enabling transparency between streets and inside.

Pedestrian entrance through the public park softens the site edge and ehnaces social life.

Stepping down the builtform towards the public park and the street allowing itself for multiple transactions and interactions.

Double Height Welfare/Gathering spaces :

Multiple terraces which acts as gathering spaces or ‘Elevated playground’

Massing based on concpets to retain the particular configuration of chawl including long corridors, terraces and horizontal and verticle connectivity. Creating pods for everyday activities, shops on periphery.m

Chawl Redevelopment for a New Sociality

Design Dissertation | Mahalakshmi | Sem 10 Mentor - Rupali Gupte , Apurva Talpade

The city of Mumbai is undergoing a rapid metamorphosis. Every day that goes by shows just how quickly a post-industrial city is evolving into a hub of commerce, entertainment and glimmering infrastructure which has changed how the people live.

‘Chawl’ which still retains its ethnicity, aesthetics and the sense of community living is redeveloped into apartment buildings. Since the transformation , it is observed to have compromised on their social life and relationships of the space to its user.

Scope of thesis is to redesign a chawl redevelopment so as to retain its multiple transactional capacities and to maintain the complexity of the relationships and spatial practices. Redevelopment of a dilapidated chawl in Mahalakshmi that is in discussions with builders for redevelopment.

Design School Working Drawing

Prabhadevi, Mumbai | Sem 6 Mentor - Dipti Bhaindarkar

The intend was to design a campus fully dedicated to architectural education with more informal and interacting spaces. The vision was to create spaces that are Flexible and Resilient by balancing between enclosed and shared spaces by allowing direct views to both the immediate and distant surroundings.

The building is RCC framed structure, flat slabs and exposed brick walls. To maximize light and ventilation, the rooms are located at the edges of the built mass with openings from all sides and have provision for expansion and physical connectivity. Having different window profiles with wooden binders and perforated brick jali for controlling the direct sunlight from entering the rooms.

The spaces are planned around a central space and are connected to each other. Apart from the structural system the juxtapositions of the material also have a narrative capacity.

The foyer is located in such a way that they overlook the space outside and offer a space in a tranquil atmosphere. Operable timber doors and modular systems will allow fluent and free flowing language and combining spaces so that one space can be used as multiple spaces at the same time.

Melting Pot Re-imagining school

Veti, Murbad | Sem 6

Mentor - Malak Singh Gill

Looking through the lens of Socio Culture : festival and community events. For the residents themselves, festivals are a unique occasion to celebrate the local culture and interact within the community. Just seeing it as an institution building I tried to understand the site through multiple lenses which actually affects the surrounding and well as the living.

How can these lenses help improve not only the school but also the community. I approached a programme that will change not only their thinking but also their living.

Looking at the school as a melting pot of various activities by creating a built environment through facilitating modifications to the building design in line to their needs.
