Melbourne’s housing a昀昀ordability crisis, fuelled bygentri昀椀cationandrisingpropertyprices, has pushed many people to the suburbs, increasing traveltimesanddisruptingcommunityfabric.

This thesis demonstrates an unconventional approach: revitalizing lost urban spaces—which are frequently disregarded or neglected in conventional planning - as sites for modular housingsystems.Theseprojectscanbequickly built using modular prefabrication processes, resulting in cost-e昀昀ective and 昀氀exible housing solutionsthat昀椀tthedi昀昀erentneedsofMelbourne’s inhabitants.

The permanent host structure, built using a traditionalstructuralsystem, adapts to the site’s unique features and supports modularhousing.Thissetup allowsforthestandardization and mass production of living modules, optimizing e昀케ciency while enabling customization of unit dimensionsandmaterials.

Eachmoduleconsistsoftwokeyelements-alivingdevice and membrane walls. These standardized components make large-scale production more feasible, reducing costs and environmental impact. The modules are highly adaptable, designed as volumetric units that can be 昀氀at-packed and assembledonsite.

BAMLOOPIA

Bamloopia is an adaptive reuse project that champions sustainability and a circular economy. It achieves this by using bamboo, a fast-growing and renewable biomaterial, in construction. Bamboo o昀昀ers exceptional strength and versatility, making it a perfect choice for sustainable building practices.

One of the key bene昀椀ts of using bamboo is its reduced carbon footprint. Compared to traditional materials like steel and concrete, bamboo boasts a signi昀椀cantly lower embodied carbon footprint. Additionally, bamboo forests act as carbon sinks, absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This further reduces the project’s environmental impact.

Another bene昀椀t of bamboo is minimal waste generation. Almost all parts of the bamboo culm can be utilized. Treated bamboo and even used culms can be transformed into various elements, and scraps are repurposed into furniture, cladding, or fertilizer.

The project incorporates a designated area for planting bamboo. This area includes a biodiverse zone with native plants and a zone dedicated solely to bamboo. There’s also an interactive rain screen installation that collects rainwater for irrigating the plantation.

Open-plan workshops are available for using bamboo in furniture making and indigenous weaving techniques. A material bank is included for storing treated bamboo for future use. Importantly, Bamloopia has a system in place to convert used bamboo furniture into mulch, which is then returned to the plantation to nourish the soil.

Shading & Water collection

A sloped bamboo roof directs rainwater to a rainscreen walkway at ground level. The gathered water is subsequently directed into a bio-retention raingarden.

This garden’s layers of gravel, soil, and plants 昀椀lter rainwater and replenish groundwater supplies, all while minimizing stormwater runo昀昀 while also collecting water for rainwater harvesting, which would also be used as irrigation for the plantation.
