NZIMLS - WHO ARE WE?

We are the professional body representing Medical Laboratory Scientists and Technicians in New Zealand!

Our Mission Statement:

The New Zealand Institute of Medical Laboratory Science is the professional organisation that represents those engaged in the profession and practice of Medical Laboratory Science in New Zealand. It has an ongoing commitment to promote professional excellence throughcommunication, education and a code of ethics to achieve the best laboratory service for the benefit of the patient.

NZIMLS Council:

 The Council of the NZIMLS consists of:

 President

 Vice-President

 Secretary-Treasurer

 Chief Executive Officer

 Regional representatives (five)

 Technician representative

 The Council meets up to four times per year and is the overall governing body of the NZIMLS

Promotion of our profession:

 The NZIMLS Council continues to strengthen it’s advisory role by participating in professional working groups and collaborations with various organisations

 The NZIMLS has provided position papers to MoH, Te Whatu Ora and other relevant government ministries on issues relating to the pathology sector

Qualified Medical Laboratory Technician (QMLT) exams

 QMLT examinations are offered each year with applications opening early February and closing on 15 April.

 Curricula are regularly reviewed and the latest versions are available on our website

 Examiners and moderators attend a workshop each year

 Examinations are offered in:

 Biochemistry

 Donor Tech

 Core

 Haematology

 Immunology

 Microbiology

 Molecular Diagnostics

 Mortuary

 Phlebotomy

Scholarships:

The Michael Legge Higher Education Scholarship

 This scholarship aims to support the professional development of Medical Laboratory Technicians in Aotearoa New Zealand who hold a Bachelor of Science and aspire to become a Medical Laboratory Scientist. By providing financial assistance of up to $3,000.00 towards tuition fees for a Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science at a qualifying New Zealand university, the Scholarship seeks to foster career progression and strengthen the medical laboratory workforce.

 The Scholarship is named in honour of Associate Professor Dr Michael Legge, a distinguished scientist, educator, and lifelong advocate for the medical laboratory profession.

 This Scholarship recognises Dr Legge’s legacy by supporting the next generation of laboratory scientists who demonstrate a commitment to excellence, innovation, and service to the profession. Up to two (2) Scholarships are awarded annually to eligible candidates.

The Barrie Edwards & Rod Kennedy scholarship

 The Barrie Edwards & Rod Kennedy scholarship is one of the most significant awards offered by the NZIMLS

 The award provides support for attendance at an international or national scientific meeting up to a maximum value of $7,000

 Applications for this prestigious scholarship are invited from Fellows, Members and Associate Members of the NZIMLS

 Applicants must be current financial members of the NZIMLS and have been a financial member for at least two concurrent years prior to application

 To be eligible applicants must make an oral or poster presentation as 1st author at their nominated scientific meeting

NZIMLS Fellowship:

 NZIMLS Fellowship is the highest level of professional qualification offered by the NZIMLS. Options for Fellowship available to Members of the NZIMLS include:

 Fellowship by Thesis

 Fellowship by Publication

 Fellowship by Treatise

 All applications for NZIMLS Fellowship are considered on merit by the Fellowship Committee

NZIMLS Research Grant:

A research grant of up to $7,000 is available to applicants that have been a member of the NZIMLS for a minimum period of two years

 Currently employed in an IANZ accredited laboratory

 Applicants are encouraged to supply a final written report to the NZIMLS Journal Editor (within 12 months of completion of the project) for consideration of publication in the NZIMLS Journal

Interactive website:

 The NZIMLS Website is continually updated with new events, vacancies, resources and much more

 The website is user friendly

 Members can easily keep a record of their CPD points and documenttion

NZIMLS Continuing Professional Development (CPD):

 The CPD programme has been developed by the NZIMLS as part of the requirements by the Medical Sciences Council recertification programme for MLSs, MLTs, and MLPATs

 The programme uses points to measure CPD activities

 There are 18 categories of activity

 Members can upload documents up to their own account as a record of their CPD activity

NZIMLS Journal:

 The Journal is the official publication of the NZIMLS and is circulated to members of the Institute and libraries in New Zealand. The Journal is also available online

 It is a peer-reviewed publication containing articles on Medical Laboratory Science and related topics

 It is open access in that it does not charge its readers or institutions for access

 Submission of articles for publication is not restricted to members of the Institute

 The Journal invites submissions under the following categories:

 Review articles

 Case studies

 Book review
