TREE PLANTING, OLIVE PICKING AND HEDGEHOG ADOPTION

THE SCHOOL’S CONTINUOUS ACTION TO GROW MORE TREES

READ MORE A lot of members help in tree planting in school on a weekly basis, together with Mr. David Azzopardi, Brother Abel Ogonah, Ms. Sasha Borg and Ms. Natalia Zammit. This is an ongoing annual project. When the plantlings are 0.5m1m they are planted in different sites around Malta, during the winter season.

This year the Ekoskola members started the year with olive-picking, working alongside Fr. Michael Debono SJ and the college gardeners. The olives were sent to a local manufacturing company and used to make olive oil.

HEDGEHOG ADOPTION

READ MORE Ekoskola organises fund raising events, some of which are co-organised with the School Council Team, such as the Ftira Day organised this month. Some of these funds went for this project, to adopt a hedgehog, Pearl, in support with Nature Trust Malta. Ekoskola members came up with the hoglet idea, after hedgehogs were found in school after a rainy night!

Hoglets Alone Single Hoglet Found: Pick it up immediately. They lose body heat quickly and may be abandoned or lost.

Full Nest of Hoglets: Observe from a distance. The mother may return soon as she might be out for food.

Hedgehogs in Daylight Hedgehogs are nocturnal. If they are out when the sun is out, something is wrong and needs to be assessed.

Injured Hedgehogs Signs of Injury: Look for obvious injuries or bleeding.

Common Injuries: Flystrike symptoms (like fly eggs or maggots).

Unusual walking patterns.

Immediate Veterinary Care: Injured hedgehogs need to be taken to a vet right away.

Stuck in Objects Common Hazards: Hedgehogs can get entangled in everyday items such as fences, drinking cans, and plastic.

Assessment Needed: Check for wounds caused by the entanglement. Evaluate for possible internal damage.

Action: These situations require professional assessment and care.

A Healthy Hedgehog Hedgehogs are nocturnal creatures.

They might play dead when approached, leave alone if not in danger

If you think a hedgehog is injured or in danger, call the Wildlife Rescue Team at 99999505 immediately.
