WE CAN DO HARD THINGS!

Many years ago, I was introducing my seven year old nephew to mountain biking on one of our forest backroads. We approached this tough grind of elevation, and his little legs were straining at the pedals to keep his bicycle moving forward up the mountain. “Okay buddy, let’s head back to the car,“ I said.

“surely, your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life” Psalm 23: 6 (NIV)

“Why, Shelly?” he protested.

“Because it’s hard” I said. Then stopped.

As soon as the words were out of my mouth, I regretted saying them. Somewhere along my own journey, I had picked up the idea that when things get hard, it’s time to turn back.

“But you can do hard things, what do you say?” It was more an affirmation than a question.

“Yeah,” he responded. “I can do hard things.”

In the past two years, throughout the economic hardships of a pandemic and an epic flood, we can collectively say “we have done hard things!” As one of the key non-profit organizations addressing poverty and hunger in our county, Transylvania Christian Ministry is vital to the wellbeing of our neighbors more than ever.

This report is a celebration of who God has called us to be. For 40 years together, we embody the divine invitation to “love from the center of who you are!” God’s love is made real in the tangible ways we have cared for one another — whether it was through a box of fresh produce, a listening ear, a warm coat, or a paid over-due bill.

During the past year, Sharing House served over 6,000 county residents with basic life-giving resources.

In mid-year, we welcomed our 170 volunteers back into action as we fully opened the building to serve neighbors. We welcomed smiles and tears in stories of survival. In August, the hard decision was made to once again shift operations, and offer healthy food through curbside pick-up, field financial requests over the phone, and roll out clothing racks on sunny days. The most notable need in 2021 was for financial crisis assistance, a 21% increase for housing needs, as we helped 780 households avoid eviction and utility shut-offs. We can faithfully say, “together, we can do hard things!”

We are so grateful for the many people who have given resources to the ministry of Sharing House. You

will see their names in this report. If there was one word to sum up these days of living through a global pandemic and struggling economy, it would be resilient! Our donors are resilient in the face of human suffering as we take to heart the call to extend compassion and mercy to our neighbors in need. By God’s grace and goodness, this is our story of perseverance. This is our story about how we can undertake hard things to make someone else’s life less burdened.

40 YEARS & MORE: LET THE JOURNEY CONTINUE

Reflection exists at the core of Sharing House and our mission and vision. Our vision, mission and values reflect who we are. This year we were again put to the test as we navigated the COVID pandemic, which threatened so much of what we hold dear. We journeyed back to opening our building in the summer to pivoting back to providing services out our doors. We learned how much we miss the interactions with our neighbors as they visit our clothing areas, talk with interviewers about their struggles, pick out their own produce and food, and share their hopes and dreams for a better life. We had time to think and imagine if we were doing all we could for our neighbors.

With your support, Sharing House was able to be at the forefront of our community’s pandemic response and played a pivotal role in ensuring our neighbor’s continued to be well-served and our staff remained safe. With an incredible staff, dedicated volunteers, and support from local churches, businesses, and individual donors, we were able to continue to say YES to thousands of neighbors in Transylvania County who needed crisis assistance. Our community together provided healthy food, electricity, assistance with rent and heat, keeping families safe in their homes during tough times. Instead of a grand celebration of our 40 year anniversary, we instead chose to serve our neighbors. This year was another challenging journey, but a journey well done.

The Board is committed to finding a way to eradicate systems that keep our neighbors isolated and poor.

We want to expand empowerment programs that will meet needs identified by our neighbors in the coming years. We will remain focused on our Strategic Plan and three key strategies: ◊ Remove barriers for accessing services to move out of poverty ◊ Inspire purpose for our neighbors ◊ Collaborate with other non-profits, churches and develop new corporate partnerships It is an honor to serve as the Board President of this life-affirming ministry. GROUNDED IN GRACE

Transylvania Christian Ministry has faithfully attended to the care of our low-income neighbors for forty years!

We had grand plans to celebrate our 40th anniversary in 2021, but the pandemic kept us from gathering in person. Nevertheless, as an ecumenical people who love the stories of the Bible, we know that 40 years is a significant time, meaning a long journey following a God who is light and love, offered to those who need a sign of hope and steadfastness. We celebrate the gift that God guides our ministry every day!

It was 1981 when Lib Provence instigated the faith community of Transylvania County to come together to establish Transylvania Christian Ministry- best known as Sharing House. From the beginning, Sharing House has been the place where anyone in need could come and be served with dignity and offered lifegiving resources to make it through another day.

Together, these churches knew they could do more to help pay overdue utility bills, place food on empty plates, provide hot showers, clothing and household goods to neighbors in need. Today we are a stronger and healthier community because of this leap of faith!

The people we serve are grateful every day that they have a refuge to come to when times are hard. Thank you to the faithful congregations of our collaborative ministry, who give the gift of real grace in the form of volunteers, food and financial resources!

celebrating collaborations in community Sharing House celebrated 40 years of faithful humanitarian service in Transylvania County during 2021, and with that milestone we celebrate the fact that no person, and no organization works alone. Sharing House sees our role in community as being a strong and faithful presence in community, willing and able to collaborate with other nonprofits and county agencies in meeting the needs of our neighbors. We want to highlight this reality — we truly are “all in this together” to reduce the impact of economic poverty.

CHARITY TRACKER

Sharing House is the agency responsible for hosting the county-wide charitable services database, called “Charity Tracker.” This digital platform allows nonprofits, churches, and government entities, the ability to track all crisis services in one place. Charity Tracker allows our agencies to work together by recording accurate charitable services for low-income individuals, as well as share referrals and bulletins to all organizations who have trained users and meet agreed upon terms of confidentiality. This database is a driving force in maximizing resources and making quick solutions between helping agencies. This system allows our community to break down barriers in communication and quickly gather enough resources to solve immediate cases.

COLLABORATORS

Sharing House is a vital cog in the wheel of human services. We are deeply appreciative for so many nonprofits, foundations, grantors, and government agencies who work alongside one another to bring healing and wholeness to our neighbor’s lives. On the center wall of Sharing House, we have a dedicated mural with photos of our volunteers busy at work that says, “Believe there is goodness in the world!”

Embedded in the message is the simple encouragement for each one who desires goodness — to go ahead and choose to be it! Be the good!

Every single day there is a volunteer giving his or her time, energy and heart to propel the work of Sharing House. We simply could not exist without the 170 volunteers who come together to do good work for our neighbors in need. The engine that powers this ministry is a sacred notion, as the apostle Paul said in Romans, to share “love from the center of who you are”.

Many volunteers come to Sharing House having heard about the ministry through their local congregations.

Others come because a friend speaks of the reward they feel when joining in the work of community.

Volunteers spend time packing food orders, sorting clothes, displaying the produce, fixing the leaky roof.

Volunteers listen deeply to neighbor’s stories, teach canning classes, create fundraising plans, shop for school shoes and share in co-mentoring groups with folks trying to break out of poverty. Volunteers pray for our community, organize food drives, create financial budgets and publish articles for the newspapers. Volunteers empty the clothing drop-box, transport food from Food Lion, and give hope by sharing a smile when times are tough.

programs & services CRISIS ASSISTANCE

Sharing House is the largest county resource for compassionate crisis assistance for low-income (up to 200% of poverty line) neighbors living in Transylvania County. Sharing House offers crisis assistance with resources such as a week supply of food (accessible once a month), fresh weekly produce, gently used clothes, financial assistance to prevent evictions and utility shut-offs, household goods, camping equipment, hot showers, and a safe place to unload stories of pain and struggle. At our best, Sharing House offers a place of hope where neighbors can come and work with compassionate volunteers and staff to piece together lasting solutions for basic life necessities.

During this past year, we witnessed the increased difficulty our neighbors experienced with trying to navigate the disruptions from COVID. Hourly wage employment cannot pay essential bills when one’s workplace is forced to shut down or the worker is required to quarantine. The disruptions to reliable childcare and school schedules became a juggling act for working parents. The drastic increase in living costs for our region due to supply chain demands has low-income neighbors scrambling for affordable housing. Sometimes it is one unexpected disaster that destabilizes a person’s wellbeing, especially someone who lives paycheck to paycheck, or for seniors on fixed incomes.

Because of the generosity of in-kind and financial gifts that support Sharing House, many people are helped through the crisis assistance program, nearly 17% of the county population.

The pandemic also altered the way Sharing House was able to distribute crisis assistance to people in need. For another year, we once again utilized a non-contact method of distributing necessary items, such as clothes, households, coats, and blankets. All financial requests were verified and transacted utilizing phone and emails. Clothe racks were wheeled into the parking lot on sunny days for distributing everything from warm coats to baby clothes.

We are humble to say that Sharing House never had to close operations in 2021 due to the pandemic. We feel extremely grateful to an amazing community who have kept us afloat, even when our financial crisis assistance expenses have nearly doubled to help keep people with roofs over their heads and food on their plates. We are all stronger as we weather this storm!

EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMS

Sharing House offers quality empowerment programs to walk alongside our neighbors who choose to work on life goals to increase resources for a better life in Transylvania County. We consider it our privilege when neighbors join life-affirming empowerment groups, designed to awaken confidence, opportunity and knowledge for a better future. The pandemic made gathering in groups more difficult, but we carried on with many of our programs, altered for safety precautions. It was nothing to pull on an extra coat, open more windows, and struggle to see the smiles behind our plentiful masks in order to be each other’s best encouragers and conversation pals!

strengthening body, soul & mind

GETTING AHEAD finally started up again in 2021! Susan Matthews, Empowerment Programs manager, moved the 15 week class outdoors in partnership with Keystone Camp and Brevard Wesleyan Church.

We celebrated 8 new graduates, who worked hard to complete selfassessments for basic life resources. They created individual plans to move forward in identified areas setting goals and creating a support network.

In 2022, we are excited to announce a grant opportunity from the Community Foundation of WNC, that will underwrite a pilot “peer-mentoring program. Two GA graduates will be officially trained as “Bridges Out of Poverty” Facilitators and will work with Susan to lead Getting Ahead classes. The grant will also fund 6 sessions with a professional Life Coach to any Getting Ahead graduate.

THE “R” RULES FOR YOUTH is a program in collaboration with Davidson River School, designed

to make space for dreaming a future life and then preparing steps to meet those life goals. The program encourages social engagement and assessment of the student’s gifts and interests as they look to life beyond high school. Students get in touch with their dreams and begin to work towards gaining resources and skills they will need to live the life they want. With a generous donation from one faithful donor — we are able to offer a $300 grant to each student upon completion of the program to build resources and experiences. Even with the COVID crisis, Sharing House celebrates the 3 program student graduates from 2021.

BE STRONG! HEALTHY LIVING INITIATIVE – BIBLE STUDY

Sharing House, along with the rest of the world, will be elated when it becomes safe again to meet in larger group settings to build trusted relationships with one another. Our Be Strong! Initiative has been slow to recover from the pandemic, but plans are coming together for a prosperous 2022, with healthy nutrition and cooking classes, arts and crafts, fitness challenges and Bible studies.

One group that has met continually throughout the pandemic has been our Bible Study, led by our friend and volunteer, Kimberly Dunbar. The group is up to 12 regular attendees, and future plans are to host a Welcome Table, providing space for connecting through storytelling and a shared meal.

WHEELS TO WORK

In Transylvania County, one of the greatest barriers to obtaining and keeping a good paying job is reliable transportation. With limited public bus routes in our mountain rural area, our neighbors struggle to overcome this costly and yet much needed resource for increased income, self-esteem, and opportunity.

Wheels to Work is in its 20th year of successfully providing working vehicles to working low-income participants, so they can travel down the road to higher wages and increased self-sufficiency.

On a recent morning, Chris Lewis was hard at work repairing a 2014 Ford Taurus. He’d already replaced the old battery in the vehicle with a new one, changed out a defective automatic lock switch and was in the process of replacing worn wiper blades. The Wheels to Work program is indebted to Chris who works tirelessly to meet the donors from the community to transfer vehicle titles to Sharing House and is our volunteer mechanic extraordinaire.

Wheels to Work receives cars (ideally less than 10 years old) from community donors. Once the participant fills out an application, attends an interview with budget planning, and commits to making $20 car payments for two years, the car title is transferred into their name. Our new car owners are thrilled to participate in a program that goes to help others, as their monthly payments are then used for meeting costly auto repair bills.

BACK TO SCHOOL PROGRAM

We know quality education is the key to breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty for children and youth. The Sharing House Back to School program is one of our more joyful programs we offer! Every day is a buzz of young energy and smiles, as parents bring their kids to pick out their brand new school supplies! This year the program served 590 motivated students.

Sharing House dedicates great energy into making sure our youth have the best positive start to a new school year by providing notebooks, crayons, backpacks, highlighters, calculators and more. For many parents, the required list of needed classroom items to enroll their child into school is cost-prohibitive, and strikes much anxiety for multi-children households.

Thanks to the Smith Martini Foundation, Lake Toxaway Charities, and Bombas Socks — this year’s Back to School Program also provided each student with a new pair of shoes, socks and underwear! Every student had the opportunity to put their best foot forward, literally!

POWER UP!

It is not a stretch to say that if it wasn’t for Sharing House, many people would be left out in the cold. Annually, Sharing House serves over 830 households who need help to keep the power on, the oil tank filled, and the woodpile stocked.

This category of need is Sharing House’s greatest expense, distributing annually an average of $124,000.

This past year, three local faith communities came together to raise much needed funding to help people with heating crisis needs. St. Philips Episcopal Church, Unitarian Universalists of Transylvania County and the Brevard Jewish Community pulled together to safely host a Drive-Thru Power Up Dinner Fundraiser! The ecumenical youth group helped to cheer the drivers and share information about the heating needs of low-income households. People driving through were treated to delicious meals, cooked by local favorites, Beth and Steve Womble. A big shout out to Polly Averette, Bobby King, Rev. Elizabeth Roles, Beth Womble, and Peggy Hansen for organizing this fun event that raised over $33,000.

CHRISTMAS BLESSINGS

Every child looks forward to the bright lights and joy of the Christmas season.

Retelling the story of Joseph, Mary and baby Jesus, writing letters to Santa, baking cookies, leaving carrots for the reindeer, finding gifts wrapped and placed under a tree- are all the ingredients of the Christmas spirit.

For low-income families, Christmas adds an extra burden of stress, as they try to manage the finances and working extra shifts to attempt to provide Christmas gifts for the kids.

“Christmas Blessings” is a beloved program that Sharing House has provided for over 32 years for struggling families. Community donations of toys, games, gift cards and more are brought to the Sharing House “Santa’s Shop”.

Parents and guardians from low-income households are invited to make an appointment to drop by Santa’s Shop to choose age-appropriate gifts (up to $50 value) for each of child or youth living in the home. Thank you to everyone in the community who donated toys and gifts to the Christmas Blessings program — you helped deliver 815 smiles on Christmas morning in 2021!

neighbor’s market – food pantry news THE NEIGHBOR’S MARKET HEALTHY FRUITS AND VEGGIES!

Sharing House has been on a path to change our programs to become more relational and offer more power to the people we seek to serve in meeting their needs. We want to create an atmosphere that best resembles the beloved community—where everyone is seen as a person of sacred worth- with power, ability and gifts to offer in solving problems. We long ago determined that we do not want to do for our neighbors what they can and want to do for one’s self.

We are looking forward to the coming months, when once again we can open our “client choice” Neighbor’s Market. People love having the opportunity to pick and choose among the Neighbor Market grocery shelves the food and household products that they most need and desire. Our neighbors know best the favored tastes of their family, what is on their shelves back home, and what would go well together to round out a meal. While neighbors shop, our volunteers have opportunity to create friendships and swap recipes, while encouraging the healthier choices. The significant change in food distribution since 2019 has resulted in less food waste, lowering our cost to supply the needs of food-insecure neighbors. We are indebted to our product partners, including MANNA Food Bank, Food Lion Grocers, Ingles, Starbucks, Go Grocery, Babies Need Bottoms, UUTC Dignity Project, Local Farmers, and Charlie’s Angels Animal Rescue.

MOBILE GROCERIES FOR HOMEBOUND SENIORS During the pandemic we saw a need to help those

most vulnerable in our community, our homebound seniors. We embarked on creating a new mobile grocery program to deliver food and household goods to homebound elderly and critically ill neighbors. This new program would not have been possible without the generous support of the WNC Bridge Foundation’s Impact Grant.

Every week, two volunteers drive the Sharing House minivan and deliver a week’s worth of groceries to five different households. We currently serve twenty senior and disabled neighbors, creating meaningful relationships along the road.

“MEATING” THE PROTEIN NEEDS OF NEIGHBORS

One of the most requested protein options, due to its versatility in numerous recipes, is for lean hamburger.

Sharing House dreamed of a way to procure a healthier purchasing system for acquiring locally grown and processed protein options. In 2021, we created a new partnership with NC Extension Services, our local Brevard and Rosman High School FFA clubs, as well as local beef and poultry farmers to supply us with nourishing and affordable protein options. A generous grant from Pisgah Health Foundation assisted this dream to become a reality.

Currently we have built relationships with local farmers to purchase whole cows for processing, receiving already over 900 pounds of ground beef. We have purchased dozens of local eggs and look forward to supporting FFA clubs by purchasing processed chickens.

FREE PRODUCE TUESDAYS

Thanks to a generous grant from Lake Toxaway Charities, every Tuesday between 2-4 p.m., anyone who had need were invited to drive through the Sharing House alleyway to receive a free box of fresh produce, in addition to eggs, bead, and other items depending on the week. Our aim was to help the hundreds of people abruptly unemployed and underemployed, with healthy food options, no questions asked.

Volunteers continue to create boxes of produce in an assembly line through the building. Every Tuesday looks like an explosion of leafy lettuce, bright orange carrots, fresh eggs, bread, apples, oranges, potatoes and onions — all lined up, box after box.

We average distributing 145 boxes per week. A new partnership was created with our neighboring nonprofit, Rise and Shine, as we each shared our resources to keep the healthy produce giveaways going!

u ouse • Sustaining O A little over a year ago, Sharing House initiated a Bee the Good Sustainers Club. We came upon this idea after watching bees build shelter, gather food, and work together to meet the needs of the hive. We realized that bees are the perfect metaphor for donors to have the opportunity to regularly sustain our ministry. Bee the Good helps lower the cost of fundraising efforts and sustains our mission when needs for resources are very high. Last year, the program reduced our mailing costs by $1,500 dollars! We have come to understand the importance of our sustained monthly/quarterly giving program as a way to maintain our resources and support the lives of our neighbors.

In a sustained giving program the financial commitment is on-going and not typically designated to a particular program. It is considered unrestricted revenue so that it can sustain our mission over time, ensuring that Sharing House has a predictable cash flow that is less impacted by economic fluctuations.

This has been especially true in the last year as COVD 19 has continued to impact our community, generating greater need for assistance with rent, utilities and food.

Currently we have 118 donors enrolled as Bee the Good sustaining members. With each regular donation — no matter how large or small — we are able to do amazing things! As one donor said “it is so easy to bee the good. I don’t miss the money each month and my heart knows that I am helping to sustain a community.”
