What would be the theoretical alternative beyond this static building-infrastructure dichotomy to act empirically in Dhaka’s formal-informal reality? Can there be an infrastructurearchitecture assemblage? Design Studio lX, DoA-BUET, explores this theoretical posing by taking the drainage infrastructure as a reference point; but unlike the West, it includes the role of people’s negotiations beyond the ‘disruption-restoration’ closed public response.

Disrupted physical infrastructures’ stalling everyday Dhaka urban life is now an empirical reality, occurred before but magnified recently in scale and impacts. Rain caused water logging due to a dysfunctional drainage system becomes an urban hazard with inter-related health, economic, social, and environmental consequences. The exuberance of urban life, in all its diversities and potentials, has been held captive by a dated urban theorization separating buildings and infrastructure. A professional and institutional compartmentalization among architecture, planning and engineering discourses makes architecture an aftermath.
