Hello everyone and welcome to our annual gathering of some of the most amazing and dedicated Health and Physical Education professionals around! My name is Andrew Silverman and I have had the distinct honor and privilege to serve as your 2024 SHAPE PA President. It has been quite the experience representing the profession in Pennsylvania in this service leadership role and I cannot thank everyone enough for trusting me to fulfill its duties.
Throughout this past year, my Presidential theme has been Build. Collaborate. Elevate. My thoughts were to build our connections, collaborate with our colleagues and elevate our next generation of leaders in the state. There is no better place to do all of these things than right here at this conference! When you are surrounded by like-minded people who care so much for their students, their colleagues and their profession, great things are bound to happen! This gathering is something I look forward to every year and have enjoyed attending since I picked my major back in 2004. It wasn't until I attended the PSAHPERD/SHAPE PA conferences that I truly realized the power of our collective voice and the level of dedication that people give to this profession. Our profession is full of valuable, passionate and irreplaceable people who make a difference in students' lives EVERY SINGLE DAY! In the gym, in the classroom, on the fields/courts, before school and after school, we change lives daily as part of our job description. If you are here and reading this message, THAT'S YOU!
Let's make these next 2 days a party to celebrate the incredible professionals we have in this state. If you see me, please say hello, give me a huge high five, and let’s mutually agree that we ROCK!
I hope you enjoy our conference and thank you for all you do!
Respectfully,
Andrew Silverman 2024 SHAPE PA President

The idea originated during the PSAHPERD Elmer B. Cottrell Awards Banquet, inspired by the desire to give everyone in the audience an opportunity to honor someone special. Over the past 20 years, we have presented more than 500 awards, making them a yearly highlight for our members at the annual conference. In 2017, the awards were renamed the Linda Woods Huber (LWH) Appreciation Awards.

Autonomy in Physical Education: A Choice and Voice for your Students!
Presenter: Tyler Johnston, M.Ed, School District 27J - Colorado
My presentation revolves around the addition of autonomy/student choice in the PE setting. It discusses how this autonomy can provide positive impacts on the physical activity levels of students in PE, especially those that lack confidence or motivation. Giving students a voice in how their physical education looks is a powerful tool that can engage every child in the gym, regardless of the activities currently assigned. When students are allowed a chance to choose what they want to do, provided the activity provides healthful levels of physical activity/fitness, then that PE class can be considered successful. In my presentation, I seek to introduce autonomy/student choice in PE and its benefits, posit and reflect on questions pertaining to student success and what it looks like in PE, and provide helpful and practical methods from which a PE teacher can implement autonomy into their own classrooms.
