hen I joined MU in September 1964, the Cultural Association of India (CAI) was just 7 years old. We then had a handful of student members, all male; two graduate students with families, and only one Indian faculty with family at MU. The activities then were limited to the 26th January Republic Day celebration, organizing 16mm movies once in a while, some extempore discussions on social/political issues, and fixing an “India-Dinner” once a year inviting our academic advisors and their families, reciprocating the Thanksgiving dinner that we used to have at their place. We were no cooks, but cooked as best as we could, pretending to be master chefs! The journey from her birth on October 4, 1957 to this 50th year in October, 2007 has been an eventful and illustrious one. From the small group of dedicated souls in the 60’s some 43 years ago, the CAI now has grown to over 300 listings in the roster, with MU students as members and nonstudent families as “associates”, turning into the most vibrant student organization on campus with

dozens of programs all year round. India Week lecture series The Cultural Association of India celebrated its 50th Anniversary with a week of activities and events. The launching of India Week lecture series on the occasion of its 50th Anniversary celebration has added a new dimension to the association’s identity. From the cultural song/dance oriented activities of the IndiaNite – Diwali - Sargam Baishakhi that promoted and fostered the cultural heritage of India and to the student recruiting efforts, with housing and transportation services that has provided the newcomers a feeling of “home away from home” (a sense that we, the early arrivals in the US in 1960’s missed so very much) these talks on various aspects of life and times of India and Indians by the visitors in their own words, were path breaking in enhancing the understanding between the two cultures that are worlds apart in more ways than one.
