Long time ago....
The sun shone brightly in the landscape of the Medang Mataram Kingdom of Central Java.
With their flourishing agriculture, Medang Mataram was prosperous and envied by the neighboring kingdoms.
One day, Mataram was invaded and occupied by the Pengging Kingdom, led by Bondowoso and his mystical soldiers.
Mataram was then ruled by Bondowoso. He was a mean king, feared by his subjects.
Meanwhile, Mataram had a beautiful princess named Roro Jonggrang.
Bandung Bondowoso fell in love with her at first sight and asked to marry her.
Insulted by the offer, Roro spat out an impossible demand. “Build a thousand temples in one night then!”
Using his mystical soldiers and supernatural power, Bondo immediately started the building process.
By the time Roro Jonggrang came for his promise, he was just one statue away from completing the temple.
Roro Jonggrang doesn’t tolerate it and used it to her advantage, refusing to marry him because of his failure.
Bondo was furious. In the moment of rage, he started to lift his magic staff to Roro Jonggrang.
The cursed Roro turned into a statue, completing the temple as the 1000th piece. It is believed that Goddess Durga manifested into her at her last moment, giving her the Hindu Goddess trademark of six hands.
