H2O - New Student Orientation Cyprus-Rhodes University’s Happy, Healthy Orientation program is an immersive experience in which incoming students are introduced to Blue Whale Life while planning to fulfill their academic aspirations.

CRU 101

All incoming students are required to take part in one section of CRU 101, where students are encouraged to learn strategies for academic success through the skill of sailing. If students do not feel comfortable learning to sail, there is another option to learn skills through the history of CRU course.

After completing CRU 101, students will have a practical knowledge of both academic skills and sailing.

residence life Residential Curriculum CRU utilizes a residential curriculum designed to promote university values. This means that even when you’re living, you’re learning. As a result of living on campus, students will be able to take responsibility for their own actions, approach complex situations with critical thinking, value diversity & global perspective, and understand strategies for personal and academic success.

Diversity Educators The world is big. Act like it.

CRU believes that it is important for students to develop the ability to think outside of what they already know and understand global perspectives and appreciate difference. Each hall at CRU has a live in peer Diversity Educator who coordinates programs centered on diversity and global thinking.

Blue Whale Development Series The Blue Whale development series is a set of programs, speakers, and intentional events designed to promote student leadership and professional development while on campus.

These opportunities are varied and unique to provide a one of a kind student experience.

Previous events have included Anderson Cooper, Alex Sheen (TED Alum), Forbes Future Leader training, and Ellen DeGeneres, among others. This series is frequently conducted in collaboration with alumni and campus partners.

Living Learning Communities Cyprus-Rhodes University is home to eight living learning communities. Each is either focused on resident interest or major. LLCs provide a guided experience facilitated by dedicated resident assistants. Choosing a living-learning community requires a nonrefundable $60.00 fee which will be used to fund intentional programming in the community. residence life Sustainability & Technology CRU is a university that is set on using our long tradition of success to propel us in to the future. Cyprus Rhodes has a focus on increasing our sustainability efforts and increasing the use and function of technology to stay on the world’s leading edge. Currently, all halls have undergone a massive technological renovation & sustainability expansion as a result of student advocacy efforts over the past three academics years. This renovation is keeping CRU student and environment focused.

Faculty in Residence Like every other aspect of the Cyprus Rhodes philosophy, we stress that learning doesn’t stop in the classroom. Each hall on campus has one faculty is residence, a faculty member that resides in the building and facilitates learning among students where they live. This unique program helps to foster relationships across the university and fields of academia.

Service Excursion CRU recognizes that giving back and global learning are a key part of being a successful global citizen. In order to role model this, all members of residence life staff attend a yearly service excursion to work with a community or project in need in connection with the university’s values. Following the trip, all staff are prepared to serve as role models and teachers about situations and global difference.

Residence Hall Association The Residence Hall Association is CRU’s largest student government and programming organization. Each hall has it’s own hall council with an individual budget to support that hall.

Overall, the campus RHA serves as a large scale advocacy and governing body that also hosts large scale programs and events for the entirety of CRU. A portion of each student’s fees go to funding hall and campus programs. Overall, RHA conducts over 300 events each year. Some are highlighted below.

Fireworks on the Water • • RHA helps Cyprus Rhodes kick off the new year with Fireworks on the Water, a beach bonfire, clambake, and Cohasset culture fest. This gives students an opportunity to interact with the campus and the community while having a great time.

Whale Week • Each spring, RHA hosts Whale Week, a week long series of events designed to give students a chance to destress from the spring semester.Events typically include a giant beach concert, campus wide volleyball tournament, and the renowned Spring Sail - a sailboat race open to all campus teams

Graduate Hall Directors (13) Each hall has one graduate hall director and there is one hall director in The Bay. GHD’s supervise all resident assistants who work in their building. Assist with the daily functions of the building they oversee. Serve in on-call rotation.

Residential Education Graduate Assistants (3) GA for Leadership - Works with RHA and student leadership groups to promote stated value of leadership GA for Assessment & Curriculum - Assesses current practices for effectiveness, creates resources for curriculum implementation, supports residential curriculum efforts GA for Diversity - Works with the diversity peer educators and creates diversity programming across all halls with student groups Hall Directors (7) Assist with the daily functions of the community they oversee as well as advising their hall council. Faculty in Residence (10) Addressed above, faculty in residence are university faculty members that have accepted compensation of living in a residence hall in exchange for working and programming with students and student staff. !18

CRU Crew Administrative Assistants (5) Supports others in various administration duties, including facility and general maintenance services. Support office staff with meetings and scheduling.

Building Maintenance (22) Building maintenance workers focus on the facilities upkeep and issues that arise in the day to day as well as upkeep and facilities and grounds upkeep.

Student Assistants (5) Work study students that work in the office of HRE to accomplish day to day tasks surrounding center events and regular tasks.

Resident Assistants (169) Each floor will have a resident assistant to serve as peer mentor, safe resource, and programmer. The RA will be responsible for interacting with residents, creating effective programs, tracking those efforts, and maintaining safety.

Diversity Peer Educators (12) Each building will have a diversity peer educator who is responsible for implementing programs surrounding diversity for the hall and serving as a safe resource and advocate for students.

This staffing structure was developed as a blend of positions from Indiana University, IUPUI, Florida International University, Arizona State University, University of Northern Colorado, Princeton University, University of Connecticut, Penn State University, and University of Michigan Ann Arbor. Each center is designed to run an operate similarly to the neighborhood model used at IU Bloomington and the University of Colorado. Structures are designed to reflect student, university and departmental need to promote student success (Kinzie & Kuh, 2004).

by the numbers Budgeting Model The Housing and Residence Education Department at Cyprus Rhodes University uses a zerobased budgeting approach which involves reviewing every expenditure during a budgeting cycle and noting that nothing is guaranteed from year to year (Barr, 2003). When this model is used correctly, every line item is connected directly to the strategic mission of the institution or department (Barr, 2003).

This budget is reflected in a line item approach which shows various sources of income and expenses and groups them into a clear expression of how money is being taken in and expended. A line item budget is beneficial because of how easy it is to read and check the relation of money use to the strategic mission (Schuh, 2011).

Budget Components The expense budget of Cyprus Rhode University Housing and Residence Education is separated into six main categories, each with sub-categories and appropriate line items. These categories include: Staff, Central Office Administration, Center Expenses, Student Programming, Training and Development, and Additional Expenses.

Staff Staff is broken down into three categories: Exempt Staff, Non-Exempt Staff, and Hourly Student Employees.

• Exempt Staff: Exempt staff are full time employees that are not eligible for overtime pay. These staff are essential staff and include all graduate assistants and graduate hall directors, hall directors, assistant and associate directors, maintenance and custodial supervisor, assignments, HR, technology, and marketing coordinators, faculty in residence, and the director of Housing and Residence Education.

• Non-Exempt Staff: Non-exempt staff work at an hourly rate and are paid biweekly based on the amount of hours worked. Since these employees are eligible for overtime pay when their weekly hour amount exceeds 40 hours, they are considered non-exempt.

• Hourly Student Employees: Hourly student employees are the undergraduate student staff working in multiple capacities throughout the department. They are ineligible for overtime pay or benefits. RA’s and Diversity Educators are also compensated with a room scholarship in addition to the stipend.

by the numbers Central Office Administration Central Office Administration expenses include all supplies, software, networks, and fees needed to run CRU’s Housing and Residential Education main office. These expenses are essential to providing the necessary resources for all residential students.

Student Programming Student programming and student success is a key part of the Cyprus Rhodes mission and departmental goals. Because of this, the budget is substantial to allow student the opportunity to fill departmental and educational aims. The Residence Hall Association (RHA) is a campus wide, residential based governing body that focuses on large programs and advocacy efforts in addition to general governance. There is another description located in the pages previous that gives sample events. RHA is funded through percentage based allocation from student fees and matched by a departmental allocation to reflect our stated goals. RA and Diversity Educator programming funds are for floor partners and building partners to implement the necessary aspects of residential curriculum. Diversity programming overall is for center wide diversity initiatives coordinated by the diversity educators, coordinator, and Assistant director.

The Blue Whale Student Development series is described above, but is designed to be a unique aspect of the CRU residence experience that promotes professional and personal development through speakers and events.

Training and Development Training funds for professional and student staff are used to fund all training efforts of staff in centers and across the departments specifically the large trainings that occur prior to the fall semester and the spring semester. As mentioned above, all staff will participate in a yearly service excursion outside of the university to focus on the importance of service learning and recognize the difference between community service and service learning. Overall, this contribute to the quality of the university and the departmental mission to maintain a global perspective. This also includes professional development development funds for professional and graduate staff. These funds are substantial and dedicated to creating staff that can access resources to do their work more effectively and efficiently. Essentially, CRU believes that if you invest in your people, they will invest in you. All graduate student tuition is also included in this section, all grad are given compensation for 24 credits in or out of state.

by the numbers Additional Expenses Additional expenses include building reserves and renovations, marketing, debt services, sustainability efforts, and other relevant upkeep. Reserve/renovation funds cover the cost of department upkeep and any unexpected costs that may present themselves. Technology upgrades, identification/key card maintenance, and sustainability renovations are all apart of CRU’s commitment to becoming a modern and eco-friendly university. Insurance and debt services are accounted for so that CRU’s HRE department can better prepare itself for unexpected circumstances that arise during the academic year. Dining and other contractual services assist Housing and Residential Education partnerships and ensure that these are upheld to the highest standard. Marketing expenses cover large-scale department communications and branding efforts. Scholarship, grants, and fee expenses are allocated to students who are not completely able to cover the costs of university housing.

Center Expenses Center expenses include the budgets for each individual residence center, including all relevant costs. These are broken down by area on the third sheet of the budget. Included in center expenses are network fees, faculty and staff phones (specifically for the duty and on call rotation), copier, printing, and office supply fees, electricity, water, waste removal, repair&maintenance, staff uniforms, custodial services and supplies, insurance, computer lab equipment and network, office equipment repair, in-center training supplies, staff development funds, contractual services, employee meal plans, DE/RA programming, staff parking pass, and RHA programming.

Each center varies in it’s need for funds based on the activities of the center and the students that it serves. As an example, custodial services are dramatically different in the Greek Bay and the apartments because students are individually responsible for many cleaning needs, as specified above.

by the numbers Funding Sources As an auxiliary service, Housing and Residential Education at Cyprus Rhodes is funded entirely by the fees charged to students to live on campus and all fees will stay within the area from year to year. Below is a break down of room cost.

• Regatta |$4,200 per semester ($8,400 per year) • Sails Quad | $3,600 per semester ($7,200 per year) • Starboard Center | $2,800 per semester ($5,600 per year) • Bowline & Compass Apartments | $4,078 per semester ($8,156 per year) • The Bay Greek Housing | $3,225 per semester ($6,450 per year) The budget included anticipates 90% occupancy for the upcoming year.

Other fees include a $60 fee ($120 yearly) charged each semester to students who opt to live in Living and Learning Communities and a $10 per semester ($20 yearly) programming fee that is directed toward hall and campus programming.

The only other source of revenue for HRE includes fees for summer orientation housing (transferred from Admissions) and summer conference fees (transferred from Conference Services). This is a state collaboration and relationship to provide a discounted rate between campus entities.

• Orientation - HRE receives $20 of each student’s deposit/orientation fee in exchange for housing • Summer Conferences - HRE receives $50 per guest participating in summer conference housing for events hosted at the university, which ranges from 10,000-15,000 guests per year.
