What are your performance goals?

The Kaiser Permanente Endurance Lab offers physiologic testing and biomechanical assessment to measure your current fitness level. See descriptions below for detail about these services.

Physiologic testing VO2 Max testing

Using our CareFusion VMax metabolic cart, we can identify the top of your aerobic zone and measure the amount of oxygen you can consume during maximum exertion. We then calculate your individual heart-rate training zones, including long endurance, medium endurance, sub-threshold, ventilatory threshold, V02 max, and anaerobic capacity. This test is conducted cycling on a Wahoo KickR or running on a treadmill and: • measures the heart’s ability to pump oxygen-rich blood and how efficiently the working muscles extract and utilize the oxygen.

• assesses cardio-respiratory fitness and aerobic performance potential.

• estimates the body’s utilization of energy sources (fats and carbs) over a spectrum of increasing intensity.

• identifies ventilatory threshold, which corresponds closely to lactate threshold, to determine individualized training zones based on heart rate or pace/watts.

Lactate threshold (LT) is an important predictor of performance in endurance events and is essential for developing accurate training zones.

For endurance athletes, it’s challenging to ingest as many calories as you are expending. So the key becomes more efficiently utilizing on-board fat stores and phasing nutrition with training to more effectively tap fat stores as a fuel.

In our bike fits, we take time to understand your goals, fitness level, current training, and history.

We also look at your alignment and movement off the bike, in order to properly fit the bike to your particular range of motion and flexibility. We use these individual “specs” to guide bike adjustment, resulting in a position that optimizes comfort, power output, and performance. Finally, we understand that improving fit is much more than simply manipulating the bike, and as such we provide suggestions and specific off-bike exercise strategies to improve your on-bike experience.

Lactate is a by-product of your metabolism. It is produced during exercise and production increases with intensity. The key in training and racing is to exercise at that fine balance point between producing lactate and buffering and metabolizing lactate. While your VO2 value is mostly genetic, you can effectively improve your lactate threshold with proper training.

Repear lactate threshold testing can be a very helpful way to monitor your response to training.

Lactate threshold testing provides these critical pieces of information: • Heart rate or pace/watts at lactate threshold, to scientifically guide training development.

• Effectiveness of training based on the lactate production slope.

Lifestyle metabolic assessment At its core, metabolic testing pinpoints your peak fatburning zone. This information, coupled with proper nutritional choices, can help you more efficiently reach your weight-loss and fitness goals. This test is an abbreviated version of our performance metabolic efficiency assessment (see below) and is ideal for people who want to maximize their body’s fat burning potential.

Metabolic efficiency measures how well your body utilizes its fat stores as an energy source during exercise. That information can then be used to help improve your body’s ability to tap fat stores as fuel, to preserve carbohydrate stores, and to push this energy source utilization out. This test identifies: • caloric expenditure and peak fat-burning zones for various heart rates or pace/watts.

• lactate levels for your various metabolic zones.

Resting metabolic rate assessment Resting metabolic rate (RMR) is an accurate way to measure how many calories you burn, and the ratio of carbohydrates to fats your body is utilizing, at rest.

The RMR can be used to identify individualized daily caloric targets. Performed in series, RMR can also verify if your current fitness and nutrition plan has increased or decreased your metabolic rate.

Biomechanical services

SIMI motion capture gait analysis This comprehensive analysis captures video of you running with views from the side, front, and rear. We identify key moments in the gait cycle and analyze hip and knee angles, torso movements, pelvic stability, and foot positioning.

Our gait analysis helps us identify your unique movement patterns while running. This can help us to understand forces placed through different parts of the body. From this analysis, a detailed report is generated that includes key images, a written summary, and personalized stability-motion and strengthening exercises to help optimize your running gait mechanics.

Both bike fits includes: • explanation of efficient pedaling biomechanics and technique.

• 20-point physical and flexibility assessment.

• detailed report with video captured, upper and lower body side and rear views of key pedal stroke positions (pre- and post-fit sagittal view) as well as pre- and post-fit measurements.

3D analysis also includes: • SIMI motion capture video analysis capturing front, side, and rear views with identified key pedal stroke positions to ensure accurate joint angles.

• guidance on strategies (developed at Athletes’ Performance and Movement Performance Institute) to improve flexibility, strength, and neuromuscular activation to optimize muscle recruitment, biomechanics, position, and power output.
