A publication of Shannondell at Valley Forge

Š 2014 Shannondell, Inc.

Spring is all around us at Shannondell There’s a definite spring in the steps of Shannondell residents as we head into May. Maybe it’s the joy of bidding winter adieu (although Shannondell residents never have to endure its hardships). Or, for our many gardeners, walkers and birders, it’s the official start of their favorite season as they head back into the outdoors for some fresh air and exercise. Whatever it is, it’s real, it’s noticeable and, most importantly, it’s appreciated by residents and staff alike. Spring also ushers in a new season of entertainment (more than 30 shows) to the Shannondell Performing Arts Theater. Joining us in May is soprano Krissy Fraelich. June marks the return of violinist Luigi Mazzocchi. The King of Prussia Players present Footloose, The Musical in July and the Al Harrison Dixieland Jazz Band close out the summer season in August. Also, be sure not to miss exciting new activities, including Beginner Line Dancing, Co-Ed Golf and Ballroom Dancing, among others. So, get out and embrace the warming days ahead of us. As a Shannondell resident, your choices for activities, education, entertainment and exercise are plentiful – as always. Enjoy!

The Extrovert and the Introvert: Mozart and Satie By David Clark Little, piano Thursday, August 21, 2:00 p.m. (Ashcroft Movie Theater) President Theodore Roosevelt’s Secret Illnesses and Effects on History Dr. Allan Schwartz Tuesday, August 5, 2:00 p.m. (Ashcroft Movie Theater) Join us as we unravel the mysteries surrounding the 26th U.S. President’s health leading up to and during office. The man who might be best remembered for quoting a favorite proverb, “Speak softly and carry a big stick …” steered the U.S. into world politics. But how were these interactions with world leaders influenced by his illnesses? What was his relationship with Howard Taft? And what caused his death? We’ll answer these questions, and more, including how history was influenced.

A child prodigy, Mozart flourished at the center of Viennese music life. He reveled in his success as performer, conductor and composer. French composer Satie, on the other hand, was branded by teachers as “untalented” and “lazy.” After an affair with an artist’s model, Satie never married, lived alone and became isolated. His introspective nature is heard in his compositions and serves as stark contrast to Mozart’s whimsical arrangements. A Pennsylvania native, David Clark Little’s compositions have been performed and broadcast around the world.
