VOUSSOIR CLOUD SCIArc Gallery, Los Angeles, 2008 Iwamoto Scott Architecture • Vaults and walls are relying on each other to structurally retain their pure compressive form • Form finding programs were used to determine the compressive vault • Inspired by Frei Otto and Antonio Gaudi’s hanging chain models • Refined and adjusted both projects to find the final form • Folding of thin wood laminate to create the 3D petals • To hold the shape, the curve relies on the surface tension of wood and geometry of the flanges • Iterative impericaltesting done through the construction process • Each cell behaves differently depening on factors such as size, edge condition and its position

CASE STUDY 2.0 • Exploration of post-formable plywood through digital fabrication and manufacturing technology • Challenges and explores material possibilities in today’s world of architecture • Uses CNC-router to create a wooden mould to bend pre-heated flat surfaces • Through computational programming and algorithmic procedures, material behaviour and interlocking system of the structure was analysed • This allows understanding of the internal forces and geometry of the pavilion’s structural and material properties • With flexible Grada Plywood panels, the interlocking system allowed the structure to be stiffer, preventing it from falling apart • Digital understanding and the fabrication process through computational modelling has opened more doors in architectural research in the aspect of design materiality DRAGON SKIN PAVILION Hong Kong & Shenzhen Bi-City, 2012 LEAD and EDGE practices

1. Create quadrangular panels on a surface and explode 2. Take the 4 points of the surface to connect all the middle points of each line 3. Create an arc, which will later be extruded 4. Extrude the diamond panels to allow it to be big enough to be trimmed later on.

5. Evaluate the surface at its UV coordinates, set its amplitude length and create a plane through the 3 points of the arc, which will be fed to a vector, later extruding these arc surfaces along that vector

6. Split one brep with another, take the list item and scale until they interlock with each other.
