Aura Freedom International is a grassroots women’s organization that aims to eliminate violence against women through re-education, advocacy and empowerment. This building is a public-facing women’s center that provides support and rehabilitation to survivors of domestic violence. The public nature of these spaces aims to remove the stigma surrounding domestic violence. Each space is designed thoughtfully for individuals who have experienced trauma, prioritizing safety, comfort, and personal autonomy.

TRAUMA-INFORMED
DESIGN revolves around having a deep understanding of the lived experiences of trauma survivors and creating architecture that is responsive to people who have adapted to life differently due to their trauma. For survivors of domestic violence, it is essential to employ design principles that inspire feelings of safety, comfort, and control over their space.
This site is easily accessible by public transit and in a location secluded from major commercial infrastructure. There are several youth and family spaces that would benefit from collaborating with this center, aligning with Aura Freedom’s ideology of instilling gender-inclusive values in today’s youth.

Women who experience domestic violence may undergo a loss of identity over time. This can be repaired by offering women spaces of solitude where they can reconnect with themselves. Mothers and children may experience heightened separation anxiety in new environments if not kept in close proximity to each other. For this reason, numerous play stations are integrated throughout each floor of the building, giving mothers opportunities for personal connection while keeping their children safely nearby.
The NIA Center for the Arts is a cultural center located in the heart of one of Toronto’s well-know cultural corridors, Little Jamaica. This center is a vessel for cultural representation as a means to empower young artists in the community. The design of this space reflects the character of Little Jamaica, being strong and resilient. This community has been, since its origin, a beacon for immigrants and marginalized groups. They are strong as a community because they rely on each other and they use their strength to build each other up. The NIA center will be a space that honours this solidarity, and celebrates its power.

Two grounding masses visually act as the main supporting elements for the building. The diagonal placement creates an image of stability through balance.
Large clustered massess are placed above, with long spanning cantilevers, to be an expression of strength. This massing blends in with the surounding residential context.

Ornamented facades on the different masses diversify the masses with fortifying cross-bracing imagery that is reminiscent of the Jamaican flag.

The public outdoor space and ground floor connect with each other seamlessly due to the fully glazed facade that creates ground floor transparency.

Architecture is a transformative process that uses elements of points, lines, and planes to create volumes. This pavilion celebrates the multi-dimensional elements of architecture, exploring how they affect and inform each other. The planes add mass to the composition and define its boundaries, the lines bridge the different planes to create a single volume, and all of these elements coverge around one singular point.

MARTIN ROAD ESTATE
WINERY
Fall 2020
Location: Toronto, Ontario
Software: Rhino, V-ray, Photoshop, Illustrator
The Martin Road Estate Winery is a space that celebrates the process of creating and enjoying wine in its entirety. Wine production is a very structured and linear process whereas the enjoyment of wine is dynamic and multifaceted. The design of this winery architecturally mimics this duality. The parametric roof form is a very dynamic form that is entirely composed of linear components. The richness embedded in this simple geometric form will allow visitors to celebrate wine and its creation.
Visitors can experience the roof form from all public spaces, including the fermentation cellar, and can experience roof up close from the main entrance where it approaches the ground. The roof provides solar shading to all parts building to protect the climate of the cellars during wine production and to ensure thermal comfort in all public spaces.
