The boxer who yelled hurtful insults at her opponent was knocked out in 34 seconds (pg8), while the man who tried to kill a helpless armadillo literally had his plan backfire (pg5).

in Finland will no longer teach lessons in cursive (joined-up) handwriting and instead want children to focus on what they write rather than how neatly they do it.

in this digital age. Children will instead be taught keyboard skills. Many countries in Europe and North America have already removed cursive handwriting from their school curriculum. In Finland children only start to learn to write in class two (age 8).

The

Hubble Telescope was launched into low Earth orbit in April 1990 and has since then been taking pictures of planets, stars and galaxies. It is as long as a large school bus and weighs as much as two adult elephants. The telescope makes one orbit around Earth every 95 minutes.

Scientists have learnt a lot about our solar system from these pictures. Now NASA is building a telescope bigger than the Hubble, the James Webb Space Telescope. It will not orbit Earth like the Hubble but orbit the sun in a spot on the other side of the moon.

The Webb telescope will be able to see a different kind of light than the Hubble sees. It will help NASA observe even more of the universe and will be completed in 2018.

Orbit - (of a celestial object or spacecraft) move in orbit round (a star or planet) Hubble is named after astronomer Edwin P. Hubble. He made important discoveries about the universe in the early 1900s.

When something happens

not very often we use the phrase “once in a blue moon”. Normally every month has a full moon but because the lunar cycle and the calendar year aren’t perfectly synchronised, about every three years we end up with two in the same month. A blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month. For a blue moon to occur, the first of the full moons must appear at or near the beginning of the month so that the second will fall within the same month (the average span between two moons is 29.5 days). On the 31st of July the second full moon of the month was also extra special though because it appeared blue. This rare sight probably happened because of smoke or dust particles in the atmosphere. The next blue moon won’t happen again until January 2018. Who says moons can’t be blue!

eavy monsoon rains have caused flooding in many parts of western Myanmar as well as in the neighbouring eastern Indian state of Manipur, where a landslide buried a village. In South Bengal 5 lakh people across 650 villages were affected. Heavy rains are normal in the monsoon season but wind and rain from Cyclone Komen made it worse. The rain washed away bridges and left many homeless. Thousands of people have taken shelter in Buddhist monasteries. According to the UN some 250,000 people and more than half a million acres of rice paddy fields have been affected by the floods.

he hitch-hiking robot, fondly known as HitchBot set off on another journey on 17th July across the USA with a sign saying “San Francisco or bust”. It left from Massachusetts on the East Coast. HitchBot was hoping to complete its journey through only the kindness of travellers who by someone else and taken toward its would give it a lift at least for part final destination. The robot was part of of its journey. It would then be left an experiment to see how far it would in a safe spot ready to be picked up get. HitchBot was tracked using a GPS.

It was fitted with a camera to take a photograph of its adventure every 20 minutes and could even have a conversation with you.

Unfortunately it only managed as far as Philadelphia as someone damaged it. What a shame. Hopefully it will be on another journey soon.

Empire’s Tribute to Cecil I

n Issue 7 we wrote about how New York’s Empire State Building is often lit up for different events and celebrations. Recently a giant picture of the much loved Zimbabwean lion killed illegally by a hunter was among images projected onto the building. The “Projecting Change on the Empire State Building” aimed to raise awareness about the increasing number of endangered animals, many who die because of illegal hunting.

Thousands of little girls around the world and over generations have loved playing with ‘Barbie’. She was the creation of Ruth Handler, who was also part owner of toy company Mattel in 1959. Barbie was named after Ruth’s daughter Barbara and 2 years later ‘Ken’ after her son. Barbie’s full name is Barbie Millicent Roberts and the first doll was originally a fashion model although she now has to her credit over 130 careers. These have included a veterinarian, yoga teacher, United States army officer, firefighter, astronaut, paleontologist, Mc Donald’s cashier, cowgirl and even president of the USA! The first Barbie was sold for $3 and in her first year of production 300,000 were sold. Today, a mint condition “#1” (1959 Barbie doll) can fetch as much as $27,450.

This Week in History

8 August, 1936 - Jim Corbett National Park is the th

oldest National Park in India.

It is located in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand and was named after Jim Corbett.

The park opened on this day in history. Englishmen Edward “Jim” James Corbett was born in Nainital. His father was the postmaster of the town. Jim joined the British Indian army and was a skilled hunter. He was often called to help kill man-eating tigers in the area. Between 1907 and 1938 Jim shot around 19 tigers and 14 leopards.

These wild cats had turned into man-eaters and killed over 1200 people. The first tiger he killed, the legendary ‘Champawat Tiger’ was responsible for 436 deaths.

Corbett was also a keen photographer and later in life spoke about the importance of protecting India’s wildlife, especially the Bengal Tiger. He never shot a tiger without being sure that it was a man-eater. His hunting successes earned him respect and fame in the area. Jim Corbett became known to many to be the man who first saved men from tigers and then tigers from men.

- Disney’s Bambi was released on this day in history. The movie was based on a book by Felix Salten, an Austrian author who became so fascinated with the Italian word ‘Bambino’ that he made it the title for his book, ‘Bambi - A life in the woods.’

This book is from where the cartoon Bambi is based.

Thumper the rabbit was never in the book, this was Walt Disney’s addition. To make the animals in the film appear more realistic and lifelike, animators visited the Los Angeles Zoo and Walt Disney set up a small zoo at the studio with animals such as rabbits, ducks, owls, skunks, and a pair of fawns named Bambi and Faline so that the artists could see first-hand the movement of these animals. Despite doing all this, animators found it difficult to add emotions to Bambi’s face and they finally based Bambi’s looks on that of a human baby.

Fawn - a young deer in its first year The death of Bambi’s mother is thought to be saddest and most heartbreaking moment of any Disney film. Close second is the death of Mufasa in The Lion King.

man was hurt after he fired a gun at an armadillo in his garden and the bullet bounced back only to hit him in his face. Armadillos have a hard shell and it is believed that at least one of three bullets that the man shot, hit him in the jaw. The man was taken to a nearby hospital and is out of danger as is the armadillo.

Armadillos are the only mammals that have their own in-built suit of armour. The word ‘Armadillo’ also means ‘little armored thing’. They eat mainly insects and are almost blind and deafbut they have a great sense of smell that helps them figure out what’s going on.

n artificial surf lake the size of 6 football fields has been created in North Wales, Britain.

The owners of Surf Snowdonia say this will be the longest man-made surf wave in the world. New technology means 3m high waves can be created in an instant. Local people are allowed to test out the waves before it opens officially. The International Surfing Association hope that if this project is successful perhaps the same technology can be used to make surfing part of the Olympic Games.

Coastal habitats such as mangroves, coral reefs and lagoons are the best defense against sea storms and erosion, and maintaining them is important to protect our shores.

First they worked out how to plant the seeds to create their design, then as early as June with the help of local school children this year they started planting the field. They grow different varieties and colours of rice which helps achieve the depth and shading required for the artwork. Other paddy fields close by have created paddy art from the movies too, such as Gone with the Wind and Ted 2. Sadly the images will begin to fade by mid-August before the harvest in October.

Kids at a hospital in Boston knew the Ghostbusters remake was filming nearby, and recently put up a sign in one of the widows asking, “Who ya gonna call?” And the film’s stars answered!

What they didn’t expect was the actors to surprise the young patients – dressed entirely in costume. Wearing their proton packs, ghost traps and various other ghostbusting gear, the film’s leading ladies headed from room to room to meet eager fans, including children of all ages and their families. The ‘ghostbusters’ even checked under beds and scanned some of the patients; just to be sure there were no ghosts around!

the world slept on 31st July, India and Bangladesh exchanged their enclaves: 51 Bangladeshi enclaves in Indian territory became Indian areas and 111 Indian enclaves in Bangladesh became Bangladeshi territory. India gave 17,158 acres to Bangladesh, and in turn Bangladesh gave India 7,110 acres. 14,856 residents of these enclaves became Indian citizens, putting an end to what started with the Partition in 1947.
