Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West HONORED as BEST OF THE WEST by TRUE WEST magazine On August 11, 2020, sixty-seven-year-old TRUE WEST magazine again honored the museum by selecting it as one of the best of hundreds of museums that celebrate the West. “Western Spirit has been a top museum for many years, and so it deserves to be recognized–again,” says True West Executive Editor Bob Boze Bell. . “It offers an incredible variety of offerings to visitors from across the globe. And it is an important institution in preserving and presenting the history and culture of the West.” Two-time Spur Awardwinning writer, Candy Moulton, and the editors of the Roadrunners are actually magazine, selected the winners and cited the museum for members of the cuckoo serving its audience during the Coronavirus pandemic by family. Some are such fast offering videos online and stated, “onsite, ready for visitors, runners that they have been are numerous exhibits including one of Texas spurs, which clocked at 27 mph. showcases remarkable artisanship.”

Weekend Getaway Oatman, AZ

This tiny town is in a rugged area carved out of the wilderness by determined miners and now populated by more wild burros than people. They know how to have fun in Oatman, where good-humored shops line the street and the furriest “residents” – small donkeys descended from miners’ beasts of burden – contribute to the annual fall Burro Biskit Toss.

More than 500,000 visitors are drawn annually to Oatman’s gold mine history as well as the legend of its namesake. Olive Oatman is entrenched in western lore as a woman who was kidnapped by an Indian tribe, then sold to a friendly local tribe before being freed to her family near what became Oatman.

The town prides itself on maintaining a Wild West feel, down to the wooden sidewalks, staged shootouts and kitschy shops. (You can even adopt a wild burro and take it home!)

Clark Gable and Carole Lombard allegedly honeymooned at the 1902 two-story adobe Oatman Hotel after marrying in nearby Kingman. Some say the lovebirds’ spirits as well as other former lodgers still vacation there. The hotel remains open as a museum and restaurant.
