Letters from our leadership A Message from Kalman Samuels: Dreaming and Reaching New Heights Dear Friends, On the entranceway staircase of the Shalva National Center, there is written a beautiful poem that illustrates a discussion between two butterflies about how high their wings can fly. The butterflies conclude, "The greater your dream, the higher you'll fly." This year we soared. Our children and adults experienced monumental breakthroughs in so many ways. Their astounding achievements in navigating uncharted paths, like inclusive workplaces and cultural platforms, rest upon years of dedicated efforts and growth. From a young age we teach our children at Shalva to discover their abilities, reveal their talents and dream big. This year, the Shalva Band's Eurovision auditions epitomized the astronomical impact of what those precious dreams can become when achieved. Day in and day out, it gives me immense pride to see employees at the Shalva National Center whom I remember as children in our programs two decades ago. Their personal growth and development inspires us at Shalva to continue growing and developing as an organization. You, our friends who are with us every step of the way, know very well that at Shalva we are always working toward giving children with disabilities and their families the optimal opportunities to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. Thank you for daring to dream along with our children and enabling them to reach new heights. Together we are inspiring hope, changing lives and building a more inclusive society. Sincerely,

To our dear friends and supporters, This year has been one of tremendous achievement. As an organization, we reached milestones that for many years remained visions and ideas for a distant future. In addition to operating our ongoing programming for 2,000 children with disabilities and their families, we developed three new genres of disability care which have expanded and enriched Shalva’s scope of services in very meaningful ways: • Adult services For twenty-eight years we gradually expanded our programs to escort the child and the family from birth through adulthood. This year, as an organization we broke a glass ceiling as we introduced a series of programs for adults with disabilities. Vocational training courses, employment and job placement, independent living apartments in the community as well as social support circles have opened a whole new world for our Shalva graduates and introduced us to people with disabilities who were not with us in their youth. • Autism This year we added top medical professionals in the field of Autism assessment to our staff, opened a class for children with communication disorders in our inclusive preschool and developed a unique early intervention development unit for children with Autism and their families. • A broader spectrum of disabilities in the After School Activity Center Our After School Activity Center has embraced an additional disability category of children with limiting cognition levels and behavioral disorders. The Horizon program was established to provide the rehabilitative support necessary to enable their day-to-day growth and social inclusion. As Shalva moves forward toward the year ahead, we are excited to watch these new programs develop. PROGRAM
Development This year our children developed and so did our programs. We included mothers from around the world in our Me and My mommy program. They came to Shalva from countries in Europe, South America and Asia because their local social services did not have early intervention programs for infants with disabilities. Me and My Mommy’s staff trained them in Shalva’s successful therapy methodologies and gave them tools to bring home to their babies and share with their communities. It takes a village to raise a child, and we’re happy to be that village for families coping with disabilities no matter where they are.

We opened a new class for children with communication disorders in our inclusive preschool. Together with our other classes of children with cognitive impairments, physical disabilities and neurotypical development; our new students are learning and developing in a unique inclusive environment that caters to their individual disabilities and abilities. This marks an important milestone for Shalva’s preschool.
We introduced a family-centered autism assessment program. We’ve expanded our staff to include leading professionals in autism assessment as part of an initiative to create an early intervention development unit for children with communication disorders. One of the program’s highlight features is its focus on family support; helping them navigate the complexities of autism and working as a parent-therapist team to expand each child’s potential for development and inclusion.
We took residence in apartments across Jerusalem. In 2018, Shalva opened its first independent living in the community apartment for men. An additional apartment for women is nearing completion, with many more expected in the coming year.

We welcomed our graduates back to Shalva, but this time as employees. This year, we took our employment of adults with disabilities to a new level and created a special program at Shalva to provide social and professional support for employees with disabilities. The program integrates employees with disabilities within Shalva's programs and prepares them for successful inclusion in the mainstream workforce. Shalva’s employees with disabilities work in various fields: early childcare, music, craft making, catering and more.
We celebrated Israel’s 70th Birthday! Our annual FestiShalva Musical with 200 Shalva children performers was dedicated to Israel’s 70th birthday. Two sold out performances brought inspired audiences to their feet in standing ovation. The musical exhibited different elements of Israel’s history through music, dance and drama; creatively composed to showcase our children’s talents and ensuring that everyone was a shining star. On what other stage is a wheelchair transformed into a kibbutz tractor?!
We awarded our first diplomas. Shalva’s vocational training program for adults with disabilities successfully launched its first course in floral design. The graduates studied various techniques in floral arrangement suitable for figure displays, table center pieces and bouquets. It was with great pride that Shalva bestowed upon its graduates their diplomas and the opportunity to pursue careers in the mainstream job market as candidates with equal qualifications.

We expanded our recreational programs with services for new categories of disability. Shalva’s After School Activity Center integrated a group of 50 children who have disabilities that are not congenital. They experience challenges like cognitive deficiencies, emotional difficulties and for some, physical disabilities which prevent their participation in regular activities. Many of the program participants come from complex family situations or foster homes, making Shalva’s focus on social support, personal empowerment and inclusion all the more essential.

SPORTS & Wellness
This year our sports raised the bar to a new level of inclusion.
We hosted the International Maccabi Youth Games’ South American delegation of 500 youth athletes. We kicked off the 2018 International Children’s Games in Jerusalem, which brought together 1,500 athletes from 75 cities around the world.
We ran in the annual Diplomatic Race of Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, side by side with international dignitaries, as ambassadors of social change.
Clad in their yellow belts, our Judo players opened the 2018 European Judo Championships in Tel-Aviv.
We added another soccer team and another basketball team to our sports programs. That's 90 Shalva children in inclusive youth leagues!

RESEARCH & Education This year our education initiatives enriched the study of disability care in different fields of expertise. Our Oral Health clinic was visited by dentistry students from universities across the globe.
We represented inclusion at a panel in Israel’s annual AIPAC Conference.
We launched our first Snoezelen course for disability professionals. The course was visited by Ad Verheul, the Dutch inventor of Snoezelen therapy, and was authorized by the International Snoezelen Association.
Me and My Mommy proved off-the-charts successes in a government commissioned research project.
We co-hosted the International Down Syndrome Day Conference with the Hadassah Medical Center for 500 disability care professionals.
Our inclusive preschools served as models for the Ministry of Social Affairs and Social Services’ new course for special education teacher's assistants.

AWARDS This year our leadership was recognized with outstanding awards. Shalva was granted consultative status by the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
American Friends of Shalva received Charity Navigator's highest rating of 4 stars for the third consecutive year.
American Friends of Shalva was awarded the Platinum seal in GuideStar's rating for accountability and transparency.
Kalman Samuels was granted the Sylvan Adams Nefesh B'Nefesh Bonei Zion Prize, which recognizes the achievements of outstanding Anglo Olim and their contribution to the State of Israel.
Kalman Samuels received the Lions International Club award for volunteerism and contribution to the community.

SHALVA BAND This year we performed on 300 stages across the globe before thousands of people. Our videos circulated news and social media networks, racking up millions of views. We gave new meaning to ‘interfaith’ at Eton College. We performed at Google in New York.
We won the hearts and respect of an entire nation with our Rising Star Eurovision audition.
We united community leaders from North America and Israel at the Jewish Federations’ General Assembly.
We taught the world a lesson about inclusion at Israel's General Press Office New Year's Toast for 300 foreign journalists.

Me and My Mommy Program Results This year, a research project was completed by the Israeli Government's Ministry of Social Affairs and Social Services in partnership with Shalem Fund specifically for the purpose of evaluating the impact of Shalva’s Me and My Mommy program. Results revealed the monumental importance of the program in determining the wellbeing of mothers coping with disability. The Ministry concluded that there is a need for expanding Me and My Mommy at Shalva and for the program to be replicated on a country-wide level. 1
Highlights of Hope Mothers chose Me and My Mommy as their primary source of support during the year following the birth of their child with disabilities. The majority of mothers said that they experienced highlights of hope often throughout their time at Me and My Mommy. The main source of hope was the child's development and the second source of hope was the family's ability to maintain a thriving lifestyle.

Confidence in Capability The majority of mothers expressed confidence in their capability to provide for their infant’s special needs. Over 60% of mothers expressed confidence in their capability to advance their child’s development, to address the needs of their other children, to function on a personal level, and satisfaction for their husband’s performance to “a great degree” and a “very great degree.”

Self Portraits The self portraits exhibited in the 2018 Annual Report were originally created by Shalva's children as part of an art therapy project which took place in Shalva's After School Activity Center this year. Over the course of a two-month-long process, the children explored the world of multimedia art and discovered the world within themselves. Each self portrait is a stand-alone masterpiece.
