AWARENESS It’s that time of year again—the month of October is all about breast cancer awareness. Did you know that the foods you eat could actually lower the risk of breast cancer? Here are some options to add into your diet that are loaded with antioxidants and cancer-preventing benefits:

BROCCOLI Some studies have shown that a compound in broccoli called sulforaphane has been linked with lower risks of breast cancer. You can also get this anti-cancer benefit from other cruciferous veggies, including cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and kale.

SALMON Researchers believe that the omega-3 fats in fish oil can help reduce inflammation, which could be a contributor to breast cancer.

GREEN TEA There are properties in green tea called catechins and polyphenols, which function as powerful antioxidants.

It is known that oxidative damage contributes to the development of cancer—antioxidants can have a protective effect on the body.

WALNUTS Like green tea, walnuts contain many helpful nutrients and healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which help your body fight inflammation. Some research studies even suggest that walnuts may actually slow the growth of breast cancer.

TURMERIC Turmeric is the spice that gives curry its yellow color. It contains Curcumin, which is the main active component that has been touted as a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent.

Ingredients

• 2 cups brown sugar • ½ cup white sugar • 1 drop cinnamon essential oil • 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice • ½ teaspoon nutmeg • 1/3 cup almond or coconut oil

Instructions

In a medium mixing bowl, combine the sugars, essential oil, and spices. Slowly pour in the oil and stir until well-blended. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to eight weeks.

Homemade Minestrone

SOUP INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

1 can cannellini beans 2 stalks of celery, sliced ½ onion, chopped 3 cloves minced garlic 1 carrot, chopped 1 zucchini, chopped 2 tablespoons olive oil 32 ounces chicken broth 1 can diced tomatoes 2 teaspoons pesto 1 teaspoon Greek seasoning ½ teaspoon salt Pepper to taste Parmesan cheese (if desired)

INSTRUCTIONS Drain and rinse cannellini beans and set aside. Sauté celery, onions, garlic, carrot, and zucchini in olive oil for about 10 minutes. Stir in broth and tomatoes, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer partially covered for about 20 minutes. Add beans, pesto, Greek seasoning, salt, and pepper.

Simmer for about 5-10 minutes. Ladle soup into bowls, and garnish with grated Parmesan cheese.
