ABOUT SHAKER WORKSHOPS

®

A celibate, communal sect founded in 1774

by Mother Ann Lee as the United Society of Believers that celebrated its love of God in a rousing dance worship and was given the popular name “Shakers”. At their peak in the mid 19th century, the Shakers were the largest and most successful Utopian group in existence. Today, one Shak­er community re­mains—at Sabbathday Lake, Maine.

The Shaker's commitment to a life of purity, simplicity, and utility is no more clearly manifested than in their simplified original style of furniture.

Since 1970, we have been producing measured reproductions of original Shaker furniture. Available in three versions: Unfinished Kits: Inexpensive to ship, easy to as­sem­ble, fun to finish, and par­tic­u­lar­ly sat­is­fy­ing for non-wood­work­ers.

NO. 5 SLAT BACK DINING CHAIRS The Shakers were among the very first in America to engage in the business of producing chairs on a large scale. They sold their first chairs at New Lebanon, N. Y. in 1789. During the nineteenth century, they made many refinements in design and proportion because of their belief that the most simple things are the most beautiful.

One of the advantages of purchasing our Shaker reproduction dining chairs is that the design and materials have been tested by time and found to be successful.

Available both in hard maple, like the original, and in clear Pennsylvania cherry.

PEDESTAL TABLE Remarkably, a journal still exists which dates this table exactly. It was made in 1877 for use in the Brethren's shop at the Mt. Lebanon Shaker village. It is a skillful merger of the delicate round candle stand and the robust long trestle table. Four sturdy feet are precisely dovetailed into the tapered center pedestal. The original is round.

Diameter is 42” and seats four. We have added special slides which allow the top to accept two leaves. Extended top is 42” x 66” and seats six. Height 291⁄2”. Made of solid hard maple. USA.

NO. 5 SHAWL BACK DINING CHAIRS The Mt. Lebanon Shakers designed chairs which are more than simple, functional, and well made. They are comfortable, too.

For that reason, we recommend them as dining chairs. They also make great occasional chairs in a living or family room. The gently curved back slats and overall proportions make them excellent for both residential and commercial settings. We reproduce them both in hard maple, like the original, and in a superior grade of clear cherry (grown in Pennsylvania). These are turned, shaped, and sanded with a result which really cannot be equaled for quality.

MT. LEBANON WORK TABLE An early photograph of the ironing room at the Mt. Lebanon, N.Y. community shows a group of Shaker Sisters gathered around a table nearly identical to this one. Its massive construction–with mortise-and-tenon joints, and its generous top (a full 11⁄4” thick)–with breadboard ends pinned in to prevent warping, have stood up after decades of daily use.

Wooden wheels are fixed in place by a small metal pin, to be taken out when the table is moved for cleaning. Useful as a conference table, dining table, or desk. Made entirely of solid clear cherry. Supplied with Oil Finish.

NO. 5 TAPE BACK DINING CHAIRS In the early 1860’s, the Mt. Lebanon Shakers designed a line of chairs sized specifically for those who were to use them, ranging from the No. 0, for infants, up to the No. 7, for large-sized adults. The No. 5 size was intended for use as a dining chair.

The backposts are bent to the rear and the back rails are generously curved, so that the back “fits” a person–tall or short–perfectly.

The seat height and overall dimensions were all thoughtfully worked out by the Shakers. We have reproduced every detail.

Available both in clear cherry and in hard maple. Like the Shakers, we offer a wide variety of chair tape choices (see page 47).

TRESTLE TABLE Shaker cabinetmakers made the de­sign of trestle tables more graceful by using arched ve­ nient by rais­ ing the feet and more con­ horizontal stretch­er to allow for more leg room. Shaker piece, with crisply turned legs and a generous top, the wonderfully deep drawer makes it particularly useful. TWO DRAWER WORK TABLE In 1839, as many as a dozen cab­i­net­mak­ers were at work com­plet­ing the interior of the Great Stone Dwelling at the Enfield, N.H. Shak­er com­mu­ni­ty. This dis­tinc­tive work table could have been made by one of them.

The nicely pro­por­tioned legs, carefully fitted drawers, and generous top are all typical of Enfield Shaker crafts­ man­ ship. It will serve as a writing table or sofa table, for gloves in the front entry, or even as a small

REVOLVING CHAIR This ingenious chair was the forerunner of the modern-day office chair. It was first produced at the Shakers’ Mt. Lebanon, N.Y. chair factory about 1860, but we don’t think they’d be surprised to learn that today it is as useful as ever. A threaded steel rod allows the clear pine seat to be raised or lowered with a quick spin. Shown in Medium Stain. Height of seat can vary from 171⁄2” to 201⁄4”. Bent back is an additional 10¼” high. SABBATHDAY LAKE TAILORING COUNTER Some of the most wonderful pieces of Shaker furniture are characterized by the delightful asymmetry seen in the drawer arrangement of this tailoring counter from the Sabbathday Lake, Maine community, which dates from about 1840. WALL CLOCK “The clock is an emblem of a Shaker community because everything goes on time,” wrote a Shaker Elder in 1887. This elegant example, most likely the work of Brother Isaac N. Youngs of New Lebanon, N.Y., was designed for use either on a wall or on a shelf. Now in the collection of the Groton, Massachusetts Historical Society. Solid cherry case, with pine back. ENFIELD DINING CHAIR This style of dining chair was first made by Brother Micajah Tucker in 1834 and was used in the dining rooms at both Shaker villages in New Hampshire–Canterbury and Enfield. ENFIELD NIGHT TABLE What we call bedrooms, the Shakers called “retiring rooms”. At the Great Stone Dwelling in the Enfield, N.H. Shaker com­ munity–where this piece originated–each retiring room accommodated as many as four Shakers. ADJUSTABLE MUSIC STANDS The Shakers developed their own system of musical notation, composed over 10,000 works of music, and even invented (in 1871) a new instrument called the pianoviolin. SINGLE STEP STOOL The Shakers used step stools like this one, with its long steadying post, to give access to high drawers and selves. Several of the twostep stools exist today in museums, but the one step design is quite a rarity. The front leg is dovetailed to the top and braced to the back to give it great rigidity. Shaker Workshops oval boxes are unique because we make them on reproductions of the original forms and templates used at the Mt. Lebanon, N.Y. Shaker community during the mid-19th century. We handcraft them of select Pennsylvania cherry, secured by copper tacks.

Tops and bottoms are fastened with wooden pegs. We hand rub them with several coats of oil finish and buff them until they “glow”.

SHAKER SEED BOXES In 1816, the Shakers invented the concept of putting seeds in the small paper envelopes which are commonplace today. Brightly colored wooden boxes full of these seed packets were delivered to country stores, for sale to local farmers. For nearly a century, Shaker Seed wagons and the kindly Shaker Brothers who sold the seeds were said to be “as familiar as the spring time.”

CUSTOM FINISHED SHAKER FURNITURE

In 7⁄8” and 1” chair tape, we strongly recommend the checkerboard pattern. In 5⁄8” tape, you may select the checkerboard or herringbone pattern for the catalog price. Other weaving patterns are shown on our website; these are $10.00 extra for each seat or back.

Deposit. A 50% deposit is required with your order for custom finished furniture. We will charge your credit card or contact you for payment of the balance, when we are ready to ship.

Deliveries. Custom finished furniture is normally shipped 3-4 weeks after receipt of your order. We will notify you of any delay.

SHAKER WORKSHOPS® WIPING STAINS AND OIL FINISH Since January 2004, all of our stains have been water-based. Over stained pieces a final finish is required, which your local hardware store can supply. Over cherry wood pieces we recommend our Oil Finish, adapted from an authentic 19th century formula.

In all the Shaker communities, fabric tape was pre­ferred over rush, wood splint, or cane because it is so functional. It does not dry out and break, nor does it pinch or snag clothing.

It is stronger and longer last­ing, and it is simple and quick to weave. In addition, it is more comfortable and colorful. The tape itself is a heavy-duty 100% cotton canvas webbing, yarndyed to our specifications with fade-re­sis­tance in mind. Imported.

Chair taping is an extremely simple op­er­a­tion. Even a beginner can complete the seat of an average chair in 90 minutes. Each of our chair and stool kits contains sufficient tape, a foam rubber cushion to be inserted in the seat, and upholstery tacks. In­cludes step-by-step instructions. Our website features “Virtual Tape Weaver”, an interactive program that allows you to visualize every possible chair tape combination with any of our stain choices.

To determine the correct amount of yardage, use this formula: First, measure the front rail between the posts, in inches. Second, measure straight across from the center of the back rail to the center of the front rail, in inches. Multiply these together. Divide the resulting figure by 9, and that’s the total number of yards of 1” tape required. (For 5⁄8” tape, divide by 5.3. For Shaker Flame Stitch tape divide by 7.5.) If you want to use two colors, order half the total number of yards per color. Our chair tape is sold only in the roll sizes below. If you need 121⁄2 yards, for example, order 15 yards.
