The Importance of Ethnography in Architecture is growing day by day. The inhabitants and users are given the prime importance by the Architects and Designers right from the conceptualization of a project to its execution. Before moving forward to what you should know about Ethnography as an Architect, lets see what Ethnography really is.

What is Ethnography?

The Oxford English Dictionary defines “Ethnography” as ‘the scientific description of different people and cultures, with their customs habits and difference’.

It was a concept-based method which was used by the Social Scientists to study about the Communities and their Culture and Society. The realm of Ethnography includes three primary subjects - People, Society and Culture.

The adaptation of Ethnography in the Architectural world has been achieving proper attention where with the growing competition, user-responsive designs have become one of the major requirements as well a considerable challenge to the Architects. The user is a central trope in the ethnographic projects in Architecture, the aspects involved in designing such a project involves: Their basic needs, Cultural responses, Societal Values and many more. Taking into consideration the amount of research that goes into these projects, Ethnography can be termed as an “Emerging design strategy”.

At which stage of an Architecture project, Ethnography must be used?

In the field of Architecture, Ethnography generally takes place during the time of Research which we call it an “Ethnographic Research”. Over the course of time, Ethnographic Research has become one of the important research methods for Qualitative research. The growing importance of Ethnography in Architecture has led to the incorporation of Ethnographic studies including parameters like Human behaviour, Cultural diversities and User perspectives – in academic curriculums for Architecture teaching.

New age projects are declining towards designs as an outcome of extensive research which is driven by all the three parameters mentioned above. According to Non Arkaraprasertkul from King’s College London “Ethnographic research requires architects to pay attention to what they observe and to be very keen to ask questions about the rationality behind certain activities that take place in the community, rather than to just look at the characteristic of the existing architecture and physical condition”. – as written in his paper ‘Methodology to Address the missing medium ground the ethnographic perspective’.

How can Ethnography benefit Architecture?

The Ethnography study becomes crucial in the Social and Cultural Architecture where the inhabitants are of prime importance to space. This study can help the Architects and Designers to produce userdriven designs to enhance their rich cultural and societal values.

Some of the key advantages of Ethnography in architecture can be listed as: 1. The research is done in a natural setting producing more direct, simple and straight-forward results.

2. An accurate reflection of behavioural patterns can be framed out which can contribute to creating a user-driven spaces.

3. Explorations can be formed which emphasize particular Social phenomena and Cultural aspects.

4. Offers interpretations of the actions and behaviours of the inhabitants that should be unearthed thorough investigation of what people do and their reasons behind doing it.

Ethnography in modern Architecture ensures ideas and innovations which are of value for the users.

Today’s firms are constantly in a need of new ways to achieve competitive advantage. Ethnography can be a tool for these firms providing a better understanding and alignment with their customer’s values.

Hence, modern Architecture requires more and more involvement and insights from Ethnographic research and response.

Architectural projects with an important role of Ethnography: The representation of Ethnographic studies can result in a driving factor where the space loudly speaks about the Lifestyle and Culture of a community. These kinds of projects become special for the targeted audience and the users to reconnect and experience a strong soulful presence of their identity.

The Jewish Museum in Berlin designed by Daniel Lebinskind established a Berlin identity which was lost during WWII. The museum was a strong expression of feelings of Absence, Emptiness and Invisibility – expressions of the disappearance of the Jewish culture. The project can be briefly described as a responsive architectural action of emotions providing the visitors where both the Jewish Culture and the city of Berlin can be deeply felt.

Another Lebinskind project of a corporate pavilion for Vanke China represented the Chinese culture based on the theme of the food: the shi tang, a traditional Chinese dining hall, the landscape, the fundamental element to life, and the dragon which is metaphorically related to farming and sustenance.

“As the rapid growth of cities forces populations to live in closer proximity and the risk of social disintegration rises, we commissioned this pavilion to address both metaphorically and physically the issues of contemporary life related to the theme of the Expo,” said Wang Shi, Chairman, China Vanke.

A slightly different but a relative consequence of taking into account the Reading habits and the Userinteraction as the primary requirements, the V.F.Xira Municipal Library named as the “Factory of Words” possess a broader concept of the functions of a library with a desire to build an effectively usable equipment for the local population. Breaking the norms of the traditional and typical reading behaviour, this library allows more free and unique experiences of reading. In order to be able to contribute to a greater and more effective relation of users with the space, the different floors are overlapped in an intentionally staggered manner in order to ensure a clear visual contact between them.

Architecture and Interior Designing fields have always been intersecting and interconnecting parts in every project. Lots of Architects pursue Architecture but then practice as Interior Designers and hence the number of Interior Designers has been emerging day-by-day. Both these fields while having some similarities, also have a lot of differences when it comes to the scope of work, scales of the projects and materials applications. Hence, it becomes extremely important to learn and acquire knowledge for some Interior Design topics even after completing Architectural Education.

Here are some tips for every Architect who wants to pursue Interior Design:

1. Learning the Principles One of the first things that every Interior Design aspirant should know is the Principles of Design. These principles are even a mandate when it comes to the foundation education of Interior Design in every academic curriculum. They are formed as the basic guidelines for design practice.

Balance, Rhythm, Harmony, Emphasis, Proportion and Scale are the basic five principles that every Designer must know, get acquainted with and practice them in their projects.

Other principles for Interior Design which are more relevant to the field are Space, Light, Form, Line, Colour, Texture and Pattern. These principles are a go-to no matter what kind of a project an Interior Designer is working on. Their fundamentals are the best way to know what is Interior Design as a Complete package!

2. Details matter!

One of the key things which stands out Interior Design from Architecture is the “Attention to Detail�.

The Scale of Interior Design is comparatively smaller than Architecture where Architects work on the outer shell while Interior Designer work in the Inner Shell. This Inner shell becomes challenging when working on the details of each and every material, finishes, furniture and joineries.

Working on the details should be well equipped as the prime requirement when one wants to pursue Interior design. This also includes working on smaller scales of projects, objects and sometimes Art.

3. Smaller Scales, Bigger Scope As it is already mentioned that the scale of Interior Design is comparatively smaller than Architecture, getting equipped on working with smaller scales should be ticked off from the list of things to learn to become an Interior Designer. . This means that as Architects if one has designed a three-storey bungalow for example, as Interior designers they have a much larger scope of working on Design Concepts for each and every space of the bungalow, Colour themes, material selections, texture combinations, ergonomic placements of Design Elements, and much more to design successful user-based spaces.

Working on smaller scales tend to open up to focusing on the Functionality of every Living Space.

User is the most important factor which drives every Interior Designed project and Functionality in these smaller-scale projects is the one thing that should be focused upon the most.

4. Learning about a lot more Materials Materials hold a very significant place in any Interior Design project. However, Architects are already well-equipped with the knowledge of materials, but those materials are different from the ones which are used at an Interior Level.

Architecture materials generally consist of materials like Wood, Concrete, Stone, Glass and Steel.

These are the most common materials which are used in the outer shell of the building by architects.

But when it comes to Interior Design, there is the whole list of different materials for the inner shell. These materials include Plywood, Paints, Granite, Marble, Glass, Veneer, Ceramics, Fabrics, Upholstery, Wallpapers, and a lot more.

5. Textile is a go-to!

When it comes to Fabrics and Textile, it can create wonders in any space. Textile materials have a factor of Versatility in them because they can work as many elements like Partitions, Ceiling, Carpets, Furniture and even Staircase railings. Colours in these materials are a plus point which adds an interesting vibrancy to spaces. Hence, the use of Fabrics and Textile can be done with pretty much every spatial as well as a design element and becomes the go-tos in any Interior Design project to enhance their looks and ambience.

6. Colour is Crucial One more subject which is essential and included in every Interior Design curriculum is the know-how of Colours and Colour theories. Architects tend to use these theories of Colours in the Architectural projects but when it comes to Interiors, the number of objects which are associated with colours increases.

Wall Paints and Finishes are the most important elements which are driven by the choices of Colours an Interior Designer makes. Where Architecture projects don’t have a wide spectrum of colour choices because of the limited materials the field offer as compared to Interior design projects.

Colour becomes a design-driver in most of the projects as it allows all the five principles of Balance, Rhythm, Harmony, Emphasis and Proportion, in a space. Hence, the correct choices of Colours in the correct way is one of the most crucial parts of any Interior Design project.

7. Working on Graphics and Visuals Even though Graphic designers are sometimes affiliated with some Interior Design projects, Interior Designers should also have a knack and know-how of Graphics. Retail spaces, Hospitality and Commercial spaces have a huge amount of Graphical incorporation in this modern world and the importance of Graphics in these spaces is certainly increasing.

From just being a Brand identity in a Retail store to being a Guest attraction in Hospitality spaces,

role of Graphics in a spatial spectrum has evolved from time to time.

Hence, every Interior Designer aspirant should be interested in designing or even incorporating Graphics and Visuals in an Interior space becomes they are surely an exigent aspect of every project.

8. Lighting and Other Services Lighting is an important aspect of interior design as it enhances the aesthetic appeal and creates the mood and ambience of living space. Lighting fixtures that illuminate a room creates a safe and comfortable environment besides adding style to the interior dĂŠcor. Light is the main element that gives the room a special look and transforms it into a seamless combination of functionality and style.

Besides playing a functional role it creates a visually dynamic space. Lighting can make or break the ambience of a room. Hence proper lighting is an important element of designing any living space.

Other services like HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) and Plumbing are interlinked with designing a living space. All these aspects should be taken care of while planning the spaces as an Interior Designer.

9. Local Laws and Codes Learning about plumbing codes, electricity and load-bearing walls may not be excited, but it is required.

Staying abreast of such things gives interior designers an advantage and marketability. They are also necessary as per the Laws and Guidelines formed by the respective regions. Any denial of these Laws can result in further legal actions in case of damages like Fire disasters and Electric short circuits.

10. Knowing the Difference between Designer and Decorator Many people who have a good knack for materials, textile and colours tend to decorate living spaces on their own. But there is a very thin line between this debatable take on what is the difference between an Interior Decorator and an Interior Designer?

There is a reason why the practice of Interior design requires a degree. The sole difference between both a Decorator and a Designer is Education. Interior design degrees are typically two, three or in some institutions Five-year long courses. Along these academic journeys there is a learning of a lot of fundamentals like Space Planning, Materials, Structure, Proportions, Ergonomics, Scales, Detailing, Joineries, Colour, Textures and Patterns. These aspects are the pieces of a complete art of Interior Design.

Hence, regardless of how acquainted a person is with Decorating, Designing is a lot more enhanced and detailed learning. Every Architect who wants to pursue Interior Designing should look back into whether to be a Decorator or a Designer.

Trump has been expanding his Real estate portfolio with some of the most expensive and high-profile properties in Virginia, Illinois, Florida, New Jersey, California, New York, Connecticut and Hawaii. Before moving to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue - The White House, Trump has been an owner and an active resident of his various Residences including the one which is a Real Skyscraper!

From the popular Trump Tower in Manhattan, New York, Trump Residences include lands of Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach Florida; a huge mansion outside New York known as Seven Springs; Albemarle Estate in the Trump Winery, Virginia; Trump national golf Club and Bedminster Township in New Jersey and the Le Chateau des Palmiers in St. Martin.

Here are 10 interesting facts about the Donald Trump Houses,

1. A Skyscraper House The Manhattan Penthouse of Donald Trump in New York City is housed in the Trump Tower – one of the most controversial and talked-about buildings in the city. The Three-level and 66 stories up at the top Penthouse is a 10,996 square feet residence worth an estimated $64 million. It is the “best apartment ever built” according to Trump. The luxury and the lavish life in the house are celebrated by the First lady Melania and son Barron lives who has a whole floor to himself.

The Trump Tower is a 68-storey skyscraper which involves, the penthouse, President’s Offices, Shops and Residences. With the Southern façade facing the New York City Skyline and the Central Park, it sure is the crown jewel of President Donald Trump’s real estate ambitions in New York City.

2. All things Gold Gold is without a doubt the most prominent feature of the Trump Tower Penthouse. He got a fully functional 18-carat solid Gold toilet instead of a Van Gogh Painting. Most of the furniture, lamps, vases, crown mouldings and Statues are accentuated with 24 carat Gold. Since their teacups are also gold-plated and put on golden plates, the family symbolizes the saying “he was born with a golden spoon in his mouth” The other Residence of Trump – Mar a Logo which he turned into a private club in 1995 and built a 20,000 square foot ballroom with $7 million in Gold Leaf. In addition to this, he reportedly spent $10,000 on Four gold-plated sinks in the same house.

In short, Trump Houses have to have Gold everywhere you look!

3. It’s All-In-One The Trump Tower is a 68-storey building which has All Things in One. Along with the Three-level penthouse from the 66th floor on the top, the President conducts business for the Trump organization on the 26th floor with other Offices and Commercial spaces. He also has a private elevator that takes him from his office straight to the penthouse with his family of 3.

The Tower is also open to the visitors who can after going through the security check before entering the lobby can enjoy the Shops and Diner in its Lower floors. The first 10 floors include various Retail Shops including a former Ivanka Trump Jewellery store and general Trump-brand shops offering food, souvenirs and merchandise under his famous last name.

In addition to that, the Trump Grill is a famous dinner in the building which even after its harsh reviews manages to be part of this “Monument”. A Starbucks on the second floor above the lobby is also open to the public.

After the 10 floors of Shops and Offices, the 30 to 68 floors are filled with Apartments and Condominiums for guests as well as are open to buying. Celebrities like Michal Jackson, Bruce Willis, Johnny Carson and Paul Anka have also been able to call the Trump Tower Home apart from Donald Trump.

The building is Trump’s desire for a massive real estate empire, which would be followed by numerous hotels and golf courses that bore his name.

Even though the building was announced to be of 68 floors in total, the city records show it is actually 58 floors. Reportedly, Trump counted the Lobby and Shops as 10 extra floors and called the starting of the residential units the 30th floor, which in reality starts from the 20th floor!

5. There’s no such thing as ‘Too many Rooms’ In the list of the lavish amenities of the Trump houses, let’s have a look at the number of Rooms that each of the Houses has: The Trump Tower Penthouse consists of 132 rooms on 18 prime acres.

Seven Springs in Bedford, New York has 60 rooms – 15 of which are bedrooms and 12 baths.

The Mar-A-Lago is a 128-room mansion.

Le Chateau des Palmiers includes 9 Bedrooms and 12 full bathrooms along with two Villas.

The Albemarle House owned by his son Eric Trump and is a part of Trump Hotels brand is a 23,000 square foot, 45- room main building.

The most prominent house for the current US president – The White House also has 132 rooms to host the President and the family.

6. Because One pool is never enough Being a US President, Lavish Houses and Villas can be expected from Donald Trump. But in addition to that most of the Trump Houses have more than One Pools. One of the Trump’s residences Seven Springs which is more of an under the radar residences for the President has in addition to a huge bowling alley, Three pools. It also has an indoor pool made of white marble on its first floor.

Another Mansion, Le Chateau des Palmiers have two villas and Pool Cabanas along with a Huge heated pool.

7. A House with a Winery The Albemarle House is a part of the Trump Hotels brand at the Trump Vineyard Estates. Trump Winery has a long history where the Vineyards and Winemaking Operations are meticulously cultivated by its previous owner, Patricia Kluge. Trump’s second-oldest son Eric is the president of the Trump Winery. The House is a 23,000 square foot building which according to Trump, is “one of the largest wineries in the United States”.

8. A White House Other than The White House The Palm Beach, Florida club of Mar-a-Lago is called the “Winter White House” by Trump. The Palm beach mansion was donated by Cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather to the U.S. government.

Architects Marion Sims Wyeth and Joseph Urban designed the estate, which sits on 20 acres that border the Atlantic Ocean on one side and Florida’s Intracoastal Waterway on the other. The dome of the Cathedral of Santa Maria Del Fiore in Florence, Italy was built and completed in 14386 by a genius mastermind Filippo Brunelleschi. It is known for its supple curves and innovative engineering.

The making of this dome is till the date a huge mystery, as no one can exactly figure out it’s making.

Filippo Brunelleschi was a hot-tempered goldsmith who created the most miraculous edifice of the Renaissance! Let’s dive into the article to know more about the revolutionizing architecture and construction of the Brunelleschi Dome.

Florence Cathedral The Florence Cathedral named Santa Maria del Fiore was a 1296 medieval era cathedral built amongst numerous churches, public buildings and houses constructed with Romanesque or Gothic architecture.

Built with pointed arches and angular vertical spaces, the cathedral was one of the prime buildings of the city of Florence. Structurally completed by Filippo Brunelleschi in 1436, with the addition of the dome, the exterior of the basilica is faced with polychrome marble panels in various shades of green and pink, bordered with white and has an elaborate 19th century Gothic Revival façade by Emilio De Fabris.

The Problem A monumental problem ignored for decades was addressed by the town fathers in 1418. The problem was a massive hole in the roof of the cathedral. The only possible solution to this problem was to build a dome nearly 150 feet wide and 180 feet above the ground on the top of the existing walls. This dome was going to be the largest masonry dome ever built! But who would take up the challenge to build a masonry dome with such a massive scale with hardly any construction technology and technique in the 15th century?

Other questions revolving around the problem were Could a dome weighing tens and thousands of tons stay up? Was there enough timber in Tuscany for the scaffolding and templates that would be needed to shape the dome’s masonry? And could a dome be built at all on the octagonal floor plan dictated by the existing walls – eight pie-shaped wedges – without collapsing inward as the masonry arced toward the apex? No one knew.

To address the problem, a competition was organised with architects and engineers across the world gave their proposals and inputs to the problem as the methods of how the dome should be constructed.

Amongst those architects and engineers, there was one hot-headed goldsmith who was what the town fathers called “a buffoon and a babbler”.

The Solution This hot-headed goldsmith was Filippo Brunelleschi. He promised to build not one, but two domes with one nested inside the other. He claimed this to be done without an elaborate and expensive scaffolding.

The next year the overseers met with Brunelleschi several times, eliciting more details of his scheme.

They began to realize just how brilliant (and risky) it really was. His dome would consist of two concentric shells, an inner one visible from within the cathedral nested inside a wider, taller external dome. To counteract “hoop stress,” the outward, bulging pressure created by a large structure’s weight that could cause it to crack or collapse, he would bind the walls with tension rings of stone, iron, and wood, like hoops on a barrel. He’d build the first 46 feet in stone, he said, after which he would continue with lighter materials, either spugna or brick. He also assured the overseers that he could do without conventional, ground-based scaffolding. They welcomed the enormous savings in lumber and labour that would result, at least during work on the first 57 feet, after which everything would depend on how things went, “because, in building, only practical experience will teach that which is to be followed.”

The architecture of the Brunelleschi Dome The structure of the dome is a double-shell structure comprising of an inner dome as well as an outer dome. Both the pillars are supported by sturdy pillars. This practice was successively followed in many domes including Les Invalides of Paris and United States Capitol in Washington. This protected the inner dome from rain by the outer dome and allowed a higher and more majestic form. The frame of the dome is composed of twenty-eight horizontal and vertical marble ribs, or, eperoni, eight of which are visible on the outside. Those visible on the outside are largely decorative since the outer dome is supported by the structure of the inner dome. A narrow stairway runs upward between the two domes to the lantern on the top.

In contemplating this masterpiece, it is noticed that the builders have made use of balance and harmony between each of its parts. Each architectural element contributes to the stability of the dome as it stands without supporting structures. Another of these crucial elements is the lantern, on top of which rests the bronze ball built by Verrocchio in 1472. To position the ball, they used machines invented by Brunelleschi.

The young Leonardo da Vinci figured among the apprentices that helped in this difficult operation.

High up on the fresco in the dome, around the cupola, hovers a temple with the twenty-four elders of the Apocalypse; beneath this, on terraced registers, follow choirs of angels with the instruments of the Passion; groups of saints; personifications of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, of the virtues, and of the beatitudes; and finally, the regions of hell with various deadly sins. The composition of the fresco thus takes into account the architectonic form of the vault in its eight sections, hard upon one another. These frescoes can be seen very well on the way up to the dome.

The work on the dome, the lantern and the exedra occupied most of the remainder of Brunelleschi’s life.

Brunelleschi’s success can be attributed to his technical and mathematical genius. Brunelleschi used more than four million bricks in the construction of the octagonal dome. Notably, Brunelleschi left behind no building plans or diagrams detailing the dome’s structure; scholars’ surmise that he constructed the dome as though it were hemispherical, which would have allowed the dome to support itself.

Geometry and Constructive Techniques From a structural point of view the Brunelleschi’s Dome consists of two layers: an inner thin dome spanning the diameter of the octahedral ring beam and an external thin one to protect it against the environmental loads (Fig. 1). The inner layer (intrados) has a constant thickness; the outer layer (extrados) becomes gradually thinner from the base to the oculus. These two layers are structurally connected by masonry joining elements that starts from the octahedral ring beam and continues until the oculus, the top level of the Dome. The whole structure of the Dome was built by Brunelleschi without formwork, the circular profiles of the ribs and rings seems being maintained by a system of measuring wires fixed at the centres of curvature. The method used by Brunelleschi to build the (polygonal) Dome without the use of a supporting framework, was to completed each of the masonry rings that compose the dome in succession. Before closing each ring of bricks, the workmen placed a row of bricks whose longer sides protruded with respect to the bricks resting on the conic surface. This arrangement, known as a herringbone (“spina di pesce”), displays a spiral profile. The function of the spiral herring-bone arrangement of the bricks is to make possible to “block” the masonry courses as they were built. The bricks are thus prevented from slipping away as a consequence of the steep inward slope of the masonry beds.

Second feature of the construction is represented by the characteristic profile of the brick beds, known as “slack line” (“corda blanda”) as they resemble a loose string. The reason for this is that the brick beds all lie on the surface of an inverted cone whose axis coincides with that of the dome. Then the cone’s vertex shifts upwards as the work proceeds. This immediately created problems as its size prevented the traditional method of construction.

The first problem to be solved was purely technical: no known lifting mechanisms at the time were capable of raising and manoeuvring the enormously heavy materials he had to work with, including sandstone beams, so far off the ground. Here Brunelleschi outdid himself.

He invented a three-speed hoist with an intricate system of gears, pulleys, screws, and driveshafts powered by a single yoke of oxen turning a wooden tiller and the Castello, a 65-foot-tall crane with a series of counterweights and hand screws to move loads laterally once they’d been raised to the right height.

The octagonal shape of the dome is definitely inspired by that of the Baptistry. The whole structure of the dome is designed to be light and slim in both form and substance. In fact, from an octagonal drum of the dome stand eight segments, the sails, arranged on two shells separated by a space. Brunelleschi wove regular courses of herringbone brickwork, little known before his time, into the texture of the cupola, giving the entire structure additional solidity.

The Impact Brunelleschi’s dome still rises from the terra-cotta sea of Florence’s roof tiles, itself terra-cotta clad yet harmoniously proportioned, like a Greek goddess in homespun. It is mountainous yet strangely buoyant, as if the white marble ridges rising to its apex are ropes holding a zeppelin to Earth. Somehow Brunelleschi captured freedom in stone, exalting the Florentine skyline ever after with an upward-yearning embodiment of the human spirit.

The dome is a masterpiece of beauty and engineering, a pioneering construction for its time, and in many ways remains unmatched. As a master of illusions, Brunelleschi was known in Florence to have made people believe in things that did not exist. The construction of its dome sparked years of debate on what was the “magic trick that provided the result that lay in front of everyone, i.e., how the octagonal dome was able to stand! Even today, although extensive studies have been carried out and many new discoveries have been made, there is still a debate on what was the ingenious solution found by the architect Filippo Brunelleschi.

The Mystery No one was able to develop a workable plan for building a dome nearly 150 feet across that would have to rest 180 feet above the ground on top of the existing walls, which were built to form an approximate octagon without a true centre. No one was certain if a dome could be built at all over the octagonal floor without allowing the masonry to collapse inward as it arced toward the apex. Moreover, the architecture prevented the use of traditional Gothic flying buttresses and pointed arches familiar to builders working at that time.

The painted-aluminium facade perforated in a dotty pattern of the circular reception, an expansive room with dining booths, a carousel, slide, and ball pit named for the fluffy white-acrylic “clouds” on the floor and ceiling are some of the many parts contributing to a child’s imaginary world. “It’s a world somewhere between dream and reality,” as said by the architect, the fanciful elements are clear; the reality, meanwhile, introduced by a plywood hut with a replica produce stand and faux kitchenette where kids can act grown-up.

The timber, which was sourced in a range of shapes and sizes, have been adapted to suit new functions. Smaller pieces are utilized as louvres, while the main structure is formed from the larger sections – connected by traditional mortise and tenon techniques. The structure’s distinctively curved thatched roof extends from the passing street, before descending towards the riverbank at the rear of the scheme. The ringed canopy connects all aspects of the design, while internal spaces are organized around a central courtyard. this communal area is used as both a spatial generator and a climatic modifier, allowing solar gain and providing natural ventilation.

Serra Alpina by Birreria Location: Manhattan, New York Features: Seasonal Interiors In its New York City iteration, it also boasts a rooftop restaurant famous for its over-the-top seasonal interiors—as it changes its interiors with the seasons. One time the decor, which is entirely handmade, is primarily made of flocked branches with colourful flowers and leaves. Inspired by a cosy cabin, space is designed to feel like a garden filled with colours. The other time it is decked with pine trees, branches and snowflakes.

Starbucks Reserve Roastery - Tokyo Location: Tokyo, Japan Features: Origami-like ceilings and trails of cherry blossoms, theoretical experiences The Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Tokyo is designed to represent Japan’s landscape and traditional crafts. This four-storey building includes balcony terraces with timber fins jutting out from its façade. The Interior elements like the huge copper coffee-bean cask at the entrance, the 16-metre high cylindrical volume with a mottled surface created in a process called tsuchime and the hundreds of cherry blossom flowers made with copper mimicking those that appear along the nearby Meguro river every spring are the modernistic but traditional touches to the café. In addition, the slate grey floors and walls and the lined ceiling with triangular blocks of striped wood recall the appearance of the origami-folded paper.

The dual nature of the façade on two sides where the Railway façade is a light curtain wall and the Bagot façade is heavier and more solid makes a prominent Material and Form Juxtaposition to this Revitalization project. The facades are designed in such a way that a strong Transparency and Street connection can be maintained while responding to the Climate by maximising natural light penetration.

“A Grand Gesture that can entertain Hundreds for a comfortably scaled back nurtured home for a family of Four” – As described by the company, the ‘Residence’ rather than a Home or a House is situated on a site which connects Patawalonga, a river and marina to the sea. The Cygnet Court Residence has a strong physical as well as a metaphorical relationship to the river with Views, Weather and Building substrate. Establishments of Prime contrasts of Sea and River, Winter and Summer, Gully Breezes and Sea Breezes and Sustainable steps like Solar Panels, Natural daylight and Water collection make this creation A Grand Gesture.

The precinct design for an Urban Design Philosophy as a concept of an ‘Urban Room’ with a Meeting place celebrating the city life for city dwellers is a Modern hub with an amalgamation of Food and Fashion. Located in the markets of Glebe, the place is designed with Traditional Idea of a Food court inculcated through Quick service restaurants, slower food experiences and fashion specialities. The highly Interactive reconciliation of dining and shopping activities with zones like: ‘Eat Street Laneway’, ‘Urban Room’ and ‘Fashion Street’ let Food and Fashion enthusiasts Shop, Rest, Commute, Promenade, Observe and Dine along with the touch of differentiated Interior characters.

This Collaborative Multifunctional space is designed with the core concept and primary client brief of Establishing and Maintaining ‘Workplace Ecology’ in the office with additions of Environment-friendly technologies, and spots of nature and planters to give the users a Welcoming, Calm and Comfortable Workplace. The Open plan design consists of 64 workstations, Integrated Central hub areas with Collaboration and Break out rooms, Multipurpose rooms, Kitchen and utility areas. Overall, the Aurecon workplace is a fine representation of the local and Natural Environment of Berrimah in North Territory.

Hames Sharley designed a Collaborative and Interactive model for the Harry Perkins Research Institute for the joint use of Science and Technology. Keeping the Floor plan and floor plates generic in planning and function, an easy and standard Institute and Workplace is created avoiding segregated and personal areas for specific user groups and Open and Interactive Labs with excellent lighting. Each lab floor accommodates 100 researchers in lab space, dry space with interaction areas located centrally. This Research oriented project is a highly Organised arrangement for strong Vertical interactions and visual connections between floors which maximised the collaboration and flexibility amongst the researchers.

The Scarborough Beach Services and Surf Club is designed to express Australia’s Surf Culture and Scarborough’s Coastal Identity. With the concept of ‘Sand and Sea’ used in the upper levels where the functional services are enclosed in a ‘Solid’ box representing ‘Sand’ and the Concrete fins used as a strong Architectural expression as well as to enable lines of the site from the Entry – described as ‘Transparency’ of the ‘Sea’. This upper level comprises of Hospitality and Management areas while the Concrete and Timber cladded Lower level includes all the Operational areas creating a sense of tranquillity. Sustainable measures like Solar Panels, Grey water reuse, meter monitoring is taken for maintaining the Environmental ecology with fully opening windows and minimizing direct sunlight.

Whyalla Regional Cancer Centre, Adelaide, South Australia Category: Health Features: Facilities for operating theatres, treatment services, education and preventative care Project Highlights: Primary idea of Patient disconnect with a chance to remove themselves from clinical environment, Healing Ambience and Environment, Durability of Materials, Form and Texture, Sustainable measures to meet 5-star green rating

Taking the core requirement from the client brief which is opportunities for patients to get out of the clinical environment and capture the views, take some sunlight, have a break and go outside, the Whyalla Regional Cancer Centre is designed with spaces to Think, Reflect, Relax and Heal. This ‘Model of Care’ is an outcome of Durable Materials, Forms and Textures, Local Aboriginal based art and healing installations along with Spaces which allows Natural light and External environment as well as limits the same. The centre is designed to meet 5-star green rating via the formal self-assessment mechanism.

The Swan Bells Tower is described as the world’s largest musical instrument because of its 12 bells originated in the Church of St Martin-in-the-Fields and 6 newly cast bells together making a ring of 18 bells. Considering Public consultation and requirements the Bells Tower are designed to acknowledge the past and bring confidence and hope for the future. With the strong historic association with the Barrack Square, the Bells are inspired from the Evocative of Boats and Sailing. Whereas the 82.5m high tower is created in such a way that it is lost in the city. Giving the Bells a Historic and Solid language and the Tower a Modern, Lightweight and technological advance look, Hames Sharley has expressed a strong Juxtaposition with Rigid concrete frame covered with copper cladding for the Bells and Glass and steel finishes to the Tower to appreciate the State of Building technology in Australia.

The Port Geographe is a Marine Village Concept for Village Centre and Marina. The concept takes care of the primary requirement of establishing strong relationships of the Village Centre with its environment and surrounding neighbourhood. The Village centre consists of Public Foreshore paths and Safe swimming area designed to it be a tourist destination. Hence, the focus of the project is to maximise the economic potential by offering a diverse range of Dwellings which can go up to 6 storeys.

10. RAAF Base Edinburgh, Edinburgh, South Australia Category: Defence Features: Base Infrastructure Upgrade Project Highlights: Major Redevelopment of the Edinburgh Defence Precinct (EDP)

The scope of the project includes enhancement of passive defence, new 87 Squadron and 462 Squadron facilities, redesign of explosive ordnance loading areas, new air traffic control tower, new and upgraded 24 Squadron facilities, expanded 92 Wing Air crew (10 and 11 Squadron) facilities. RAAF Base Edinburgh is a Redevelopment of the Edinburgh Defence Precinct (EDP). The new facilities in the 87 Squadron will be an Accommodation in a secure environment, Offices and Work area appropriate to the area security.

Similar to that, the facilities for the 462 Squadron will add the laboratory facilities.

The Workplace for Perks, was designed from the primary concept of ‘home away from home’ giving the users a relaxed yet interactive and playful environment which reflects the company’s multi-disciplinary approaches. With Individually themed spaces and multiple space experiences, the design allows the employees to increase productivity being in a calm and comfortable environment. Breakout spaces made from bamboo and Industrial plastic screens provides privacy along with Natural timbers, planting, small booths and couches add up to the vibrancy and the Working spirit. A Special feature of ‘Hall of Fame’ reminds and inspires the employees of the strong company history.

The Michael Long Learning and Leadership Centre was designed for the students to educate and lift them in the right direction in life – and hence forming a design concept of ‘taking flight’ which was developed by Cultural Influences and references. This Training and Fitness facility allows the students to connect with space through its Colours, Textures and Images framed. For example, in the reception zone, each colour panel represents one of the 9 communities who will be using the space. In the cafeteria, handwoven pendant lights by local artists hang and the bench seating is upholstered in a fabric known as the ‘gathering’ pattern, also designed by an indigenous artist.
