The building aims to establish a new paradigm in rehabilitation care- one that embeds cutting edge research and clinical activities directly into the patient care setting.

The view towards west side is blocked by surrounding tall buildings while it is open towards north because of the vacant green space. The Lake Michigan in the east provides great scenes.

Project Context and Site Analysis: Shadow Analysis Climate Chicago's climate is typically continental with cold winters, warm summers, and frequent short fluctuations in temperature, humidity, cloudiness, and wind direction. Many consider the more moderate temperatures of spring and fall to be the most pleasant.

Lake Michigan provides a moderating influence on temperature while boosting the amount of snowfall received in the city.

Design Implications Shading would be necessary in summer.

Winter daylight and surrounding skyline suggest enough building height should be considered.

Intermediate roof garden should gain sunlight.

Low-e glass should be considered to control heat gain.

Rotating the core of the building is bold but it may need to be further developed to emphasize the benefits it can bring. Circulations on the ground floor and inpatient floor can be clearer and more intuitive.

Meeting Minutes Building name ● The name of the rehabilitation hospital should emphasis on ability lab which is an important feature different from Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago in the past.

Ground Floor ● Circulation ● The ground floor circulation needs to be reconsidered. The entrance is congested. It is suggested that the ambulance circulation could be moved to the underground to release the pressure. Other circulations should be more intuitive. ● Entrance ○ The entrance could be relocated considering the north-west wind in winter which makes the door hard to open.

Inpatient floor ● Patient rooms should be standardized for easy medical service. Gave more reason for the 45 degree angle made on plan. ● Circulations of patient floor could be designed more clearly to have smooth movement for patients and staff. Patient circulation could be designed as part of therapy. ● The location of one nurse station could be changed to get rid of the busy corner near abilitylab. ● It is suggested to create another long wide corridor which is perpendicular to the main corridor in the elevator hall with unobstructed view. ● Numbers of patient rooms can be reduced to 28 or 24 to allow more freedom in floor plan design, while ensuring 1:4 or 1:6 nurse-patient ratio. ● The location of restrooms in the core on patient floor can be changed, which block the view of people coming out from the visitors elevators. ● The floor plate may be smaller to improve efficiency.

Meeting Minutes Ability Lab ● Bright colors in the interior can be added in places like gym. (Ability lab is intended to make patient feel uncomfortable to help them recover quickly.)

Facade ● The location of monolithic glass could be put outside for climate consideration. ● The façade can be designed to show the feature of 45 degrees axes.
