01 HAPPY STREET -case study The happy street in law garden , ahmedabad is a flexible street which shifts its character in day and night time. This uniqueness itself creates a different experience to the people belonging there. Different activities like food street , vendor street, leisure activities associated with law garden makes it different from the other streets in ahmedabad.

HAPPY STREET THEN AND NOW Earlier people found it difficult to walk during the night . Now it has a separate cycling lane as well as a walkway for pedestrians. The swanky new happy street (325m long 26.5m wide ) designed by the national institute of design (nid) at the cost of rs. 8.50 Crore. You go to places for morning walks and streets with food trucks coming in only by 6pm. The street is open for parking till evening. Space is only taken up by food vans from 6pm till midnight.

History of law garden khau gali now , happy street , the allotment of space for law garden was made on august 17, 1979 where 35 people were rented out space for nominal fees. With police permission , the food business carried out from 5 pm to 12:30 am , which extended till 2 am during the festive season, however, as part of traffic and demolition drive by amc , the law garden khau gali was razed in august 2018. There was a lot of hue and cry by the 36 vendors who were removed and two petitions challenging the eviction of street vendors who were there for decades. Famous food joints like honest, asharfi kulfi and sharkar ice -cream started their journey from law garden khau gali. law garden roundabout

The street during night time is a bit crowded due to the active shopping and food street. The photograph above shows the street activity colliding with the vehicular pathway. There is different lane provided for the parking of 2 wheelers and 3 wheelers along with cycle lane. The distinctive area of functioning made it clear for the people giving a walk lane. The above photograph shows the proposed flexible functions that took place in the happy street . Ie ; it shifts its character during morning and night.

DURING DAY TIME

DURING NIGHT TIME

During the day, the happy street and the context seem to be active with people who visit the law garden and with people who come for shopping. Seems less crowded when compared to night time. People belonging there opt to have more interaction with people of different places with the introduction of this project.

During night time the shopping street seems to be more crowded with the people residing there as well as the people coming to explore the shopping street. Due to covid protocol the shops shut down at 12 :00 am in the night , before the covid spread the street was active throughout the 24 hours.

Besides that, the flexible food street gives people a chance to explore a variety of food items ranging from local food to different cuisine ,therefore the street seems to be active during night time.

ARCHITECTURAL STYLE

STREET FURNITURES

• It looks as if the heritage of the old city was brought to western ahmedabad.

• The happy street is adorned by first-of- itskind ancient-looking walls with carvings, fort-like-structure and has lighting to enhance the heritage ambience.

• The walls made of jaipuri patthar,depict the renowned icon of ahmedabad; teen darwaza.

• Infrastructure and furniture : seating is provided on the side of the street giving direct view to the road.

• Vegetation : small shrubs and other shading trees are provided.

• Lightings :street lights and wall lights are provided at night.

The shopping street, mostly for ladies, is active from morning to night . It seems to be the most crowded and active street.

02 ESSE OF KAVUNGARA -urban planning and place makingThe esse of kavungara is the urban documentation and place making project in accordance with the urban planning project of muvattupuzha market heritage. It is only a portion of the documentation of the whole market. Kavungra is known for its heritage importance and trades. It is the core part of muvattupuzha market, kerala. This place making project helped to bring out the strong core to develop as a cultural important zone .

Nh road is connected to the kavungara road , containing different types of shops that creates traffic issues during loading and unloading of goods.

The area contains small scale business units associated with home, called agrahara which were migrants from tamil nadu. As the urban hatt introduced the legibility to their obstructions and they were forced to shut down their livelihood.

Urban hatt is a central government project, for the uplift of tribal produce and arts and culture of the area. But due to certain circumstances the project failed to attain the proposed ideas and caused different issues to the area people.

The old municipal bus stand is now in the under used condition , as the new muncipal bus stand was built and the bus route changed connecting the muvattupuzha and thodupuzha.

The market road connects the kavungara road . In the past it was the route for unloading the goods from the water transport.

Muvattupuzha is formed by connecting the three rivers - kaliyar, nendiyar, kathayar. Before independence it was known for pepper cultivation. Kavunkara means bank beside sacred groove. It connected the trade between alappuzha and calcutta. During the 1926 , the first worst occured in the history of muvattupuzha resulted in divergence of muvattupuzha from neendiyar. As a result road transportation began.

Kavungara road is connected to nh road and market road.It is named kavungara , because earlier royal families were resided their and there was a sacred grove in the premise. The area is familiar for tribal produce in the market area near to sacred grove.

Later it converted to urban haat a government project to uplift the culture and the tribal products, but it didn't stand for long and the project ended on a flop and then this area is used as a rental space by the fire rescue department. Close to the urban haat bus stand is there. But is in under used condition as the bus route changed and services shifted to the new muncipal bus stand .

Kavungara road consists of different shops like sweets, spices wholesale, restaurants, and a mosque, agrahara urban hatt, and bus stand which were mentioned earlier. People belonging here are locals ( natives) , migrant workers and tamilians who settled here. Many residential lands are encroached by them portfolio 2018-22

TYPOLOGY OF BUILIDINGS

Land use pattern of this area contains commercial , residential, and public buildings under the ownership of 3 persons of muvattupuzha. In spite of these land patterns it contains different buildings that recalls the heritage of kavungara and trade relations with other places.

Typology of buildings in kavungara changed as the development of muvattupuzha occured. Wooden structural buildings converted with steel structures. Only certain buildings at kavungara still retains the heritage of the building ie; to the south of the kavunagra road connecting the market road , there are wooden buildings that recalls the details and joineries of wooden buildings.

STRENGTH • Mosque as a strong presence and a peaceful atmosphere.

• Open spaces at the mosque and the junction helps to reduce building density.

• Location of community centre and availability of public transport system.

• Buffering by vegetation helps to provide privacy to the residential area.

WEAKNESS • Connectivity of roads and buildings would help to develop.

• Putting municipal buildings in reuse.

• Proper functioning of public transport service would help to develop economic opportunity.

OPPURTUNITY • Graveyard in the mosque would reduce land value along there.

• Bottlenecks in the site would lead to traffic issues and accidents.

• Boundary walls enclosing the urban hatt act as a barrier.

• Reduces legibility of the area.

• Improper functioning of the bus service and garbage disposal along the premises .

• Improper functioning of municipal buildings and dead spots.

• Pollution due to bus service affects the residential zone.

THREAT • Building density along the road end seems to be gradually increasing.

• Improper waste disposal and pollution from the bus stand.

• Accidents may increase along the bus stand if it starts functioning .

03 RECREATING KAVUNGARA Recreating kavungara is a project to develop a cultural centre in the core of muvattupuzha market. This project aims to remould the concept of urban hatt to create a tribal produce centre which recalls the culture of kavungara. Since this place is known for trading in the past , this project tries to exhibit the idea of tribal produce with place making of the area

Site is located near kavungara road, connecting the nh and market road. Urban haat is a central government project introduced to promote cultural tourism, tribal produce and has 42 shops.

Later, it was abandoned as there were no events conducted and is built in a horse -shoe shaped plan which is enclosed, lost its importance within the neighbouring buildings and became inactive. The existing fire station is temporary.

Rationale 1. There is no visual connection to this urban haat as it is enclosed by a wall in a horse-shoe shape plan.

2. The drainage system does not function properly.

3. No connection with neighbouring buildings.

4. The bus stand is underused and is used for parking and other bus services.

5. Due to lack of surveillance, theft happens and there's conflict among residents and migrants 6. Urban haat was established for developing the economy as well as to exhibit and sell the tribal produce but the project dropped later.

1. Bringing up a cultural centre in the urban haat becomes an active space and enhances the economy.

2. As the fire station is temporary and the bus stand is not functioning properly, these spaces can be used to develop the cultural centre.

3. Create a proper drainage system.

5. Boundary walls can be removed to create a large open space and visual connection.

The proposed project connects with green open space and food street which parallelly develop the whole muvattupuzha market , also develops the lifestyle of user groups. The proposed cultural centre contains shops for the tribal produce, a learning centre for women empowerment and open gathering area to socialise with the people. This would really help to connect people of muvattupuzha to the other countries and to develop the existing trade routes and economy of the place.

Clay tiled wooden roof structure which mirrors the context of kavungara- connecting to the heritage.

Existing 42 shops were shifted to the first floor which would be treated well during the occasional flood in muvattupuzha.

Legibility lackness is solved by removing the boundary walls of the urban hatt and converting the shops to flexible areas for gathering and indoor games for the area people.

Cultural learning centre is placed at the corner of the site providing adequate privacy and it focuses on developing the women community by providing different fields of learning to explore.

Gathering space is at the front portion of the site which helps to connect the food street and open green space to amalgamate with the cultural centre.

04 BHUMIKA -community skill parkThe project is to develop an intimate understanding of materials and techniques prevalent in the industry and their critical appraisal when contrasted with indegeneous knowledge.

Rammed earth as the material treated to amalgamate with the context to make a sustainable campus which offers different learning opportunities to the people. Additional skill acquisition programme under the department of higher education has envisaged a unique and most innovative skill development model “ community skill park “ to enhance the employability of educated job aspirants from the state. The concept of community skilling is tailored around inclusivity and equity in accessing world class industry relevant skills under 4 broad categories viz heavy machinery , precision , activity and it lab.

Rammed earth , is used to explore the climatic condition of kerala. The material is chosen as it lasts for more years as compared to other materials. It is extremely sustainable for the long term, is thermal resistant and creates an aesthetic approach to the campus. The g+2 rise building is treated with different wall thickness to hold the building stable.

The massing is done in a way that amalgamates with the existing vegetation and enhances suitable climatic comfort inside the building.

05 NANO WOOD HOUSE -prefabricated housing moduleNano wood house on stilts is a cost effective housing proposed for occasional flooded areas in alappuzha district of kerala. This housing is mainly focused on nuclear families without compromising the essential needs of them . 30msq , housing consists of family living and flexible areas which can be converted to guest living areas.

The design process was based on confronting a search for spatial qualities of the house that would change our idea of living space and an exploration of wooden construction systems. The project brings together technical solutions that link the origins of construction to today's high-tech industry. We formalise the ambition to reconnect the inhabitant with their built environment.

06 OOTUPURA -heritage documentationOotupura is the documentation of heritage storage building in tripunithura ,beside tripunithura temple, ernakulam. The studio focused on the documentation of wooden buildings to explore more about the joinery details. Ootupura is also known as hospice, the place where free food was served . It was opened once in a year at the time of festival of ten days at sree poornathrayeesa temple at that time, that is 260 years ago only the brahmins , varmas and nayers were allowed to enter the kottavathil , during festival,accomodation was approved for royal family members and the evening they kottavathil, during festival, accomodation was served in the first floor .Earlier the oottupura and present oottupura was connected . Later the connection between them was removed and was used for changing elephants. Before 260 years it was oottupura. The documentation was done to uplift the heritage building according to the local survey on grading the buildings.

The project focuses on the design process and innovative solution with the facts of ergonomics. BACK UP - is the proposed product to ease the function of power bank and phone holder for different purposes. It starts with the market study and scope of the product and the design based on user groups.

Power Banks have slowly become a necessity in everybody's life. Your mobile device probably won't make it through a full day, or maybe you're on-the-go for more than 24 hours and have nowhere to charge it. In both cases a good power bank can help you get going for the remaining time . 99% Of power banks are made in asian countries , including those from famous brands such as anker and belkin . Pisen , the company is indeed the biggest 3c digital manufacturer in China and has been chosen by over 20 million customers , making it one of the largest power bank makers in the entire world as well . It's already been 12 years since the invention of the powerbank , now pisen is seeking and researching to add more functions to next gen power banks .

INTENT AND USER ANALYSIS ANALYSIS ON MARKET POSSIBILITY :

Recently , it would be easy to find phone holders with power banks. and with different functions.but there would be limitations in all cases, either it would be adjustable , or non adjustable to place on tables or might be hanging. but there's no product which offers all the functions together. it lacks some functions. so it's clear that there would be a high possibility in the market for the product which all offers these functions in a single product.

WHAT phone holders and power banks as individual products come in different interfaces but do not offer all those functions in a single product.

ADVANTAGES :

WHERE it occurs in different places depending on the user. for eg; working people will be offices. or in the home for those working from home. for students who do higher graduation.

This problem will occur when the user gets different works at a time and does not manage with the product during a power failure time.

products with all the functions would be helpful for all at any occasion like the office, students for class , for charging the phone etc.. will be useful during the failure of electricity. user friendly.

USER ANALYSIS :

WHO this would affect all the consumers in different situations like one working in office won't be able to carry it as a user friendly. like the same happens in different situations.

The user group will be the persons who use intensive work on phones.

WHY It happens because the holder they use may not offer different functions as their needs and power bank use does not offer a friendly user interface.

All the groups nowadays will be the consumers . for working people in offices to the home makers it will be equally beneficial in one or another way.

HOW It can be overcome by the product which serves all the needs in all situations

for students who are attending online classes etc.. so in short , it would be useful in spite of their age and work

like ( freestanding , hangable, stickable, portable ) in short multi usable holders having the power banks.
