Short book review: Modernism modernist design 1880-1940 Author: Alastair Duncan 'The breadth and diversity of Modernism is dramatically encapsulated in the art works of a single collection' Having read this book written by Duncan I have realised at present how ' Centuries of servitude to revivalist design in form and decoration were forever liberated by their groundbreaking visions.' (A. Duncan, p11) This is through the major movements within this 60-year era connected with the decorative and applied arts which includes: ARTS AND CRAFTS, ART NOUVEAU, WEINER WERKSTATTE, DE STIJL, BAUHAUS and ART DECO. The assortment of work within these principal movements highlights three-dimensional works such as: ceramics, metalwork, glassware and particular furniture by artist-designers notorious of the six classical design movements. This book has given me the impression that modernism has allowed us to develop and enhance objects that are used throughout our daily lives for example chairs and tea cups. This is accomplished simply by the change and use of product and interior design through the application of unique, innovative and visually challenging concepts and ideas of artist-designers with great minds.
