STRENGTH & SURVIVAL
OUR MEDICAL RESPONSE IS A SOURCE OF TREMENDOUS PRIDE...
Dear friends,
As you all know, Israel finds itself in a period of unprecedented challenge and pain, which has very directly affected all aspects of life and activity at Shaare Zedek.
We have experienced tragic loss within our hospital family, watched with pride and concern as hundreds of our staff members and family members were dispatched to the multiple fronts, and of course been called upon to treat over 600 injured victims of this horrific war.
There is no doubt that our medical response is a source of tremendous pride for all involved and has brought international recognition to Shaare Zedek as a leading trauma center.
The courage we see from the soldiers who we are blessed to witness make remarkable recoveries inspires us

each and every day, and reminds us of the vital role our hospital plays in this historic campaign in defense of our beloved nation.
We also know that this is an effort which cannot be won alone. We have therefore been deeply moved by the continued expressions of solidarity and support we are receiving from our friends in the UK and all around the world.
As we continue to pray for the safe and secure return of all the hostages and our soldiers, we express our deep thanks for your friendship and look forward to sharing better and more peaceful days ahead.
Professor Ofer Merin Director General Shaare Zedek Medical Centre
A HOPEFUL FUTURE...
Dear friends,
Since joining Shaare Zedek UK as Chief Executive in June 2023 it is remarkable how much has changed, both in Israel and for the Jewish community around the world.
During these challenging times, leading our team has been a privilege and an honour. I am immensely proud of our efforts to raise awareness and much needed life-saving funds for Jerusalem’s Hospital with a Heart.
Your overwhelming messages of support and generous donations have deeply touched us.
Within these pages, you'll discover how your contributions are making an immense difference.
Though it is challenging to remember a time before October 7th, there have been many notable achievements since our last edition of Heartbeat, and we are thrilled to share some of them with you.
From pioneering feats like the world's first spinal surgery using Virtual Reality to impactful
collaborations such as our partnership with Tanzania in Pulmonology, and the grand opening of our much-needed, expanded Emergency Department.
This issue serves as a celebration of our achievements in the face of adversity, offering a glimpse into a hopeful future.
We hope you enjoy reading about our latest accomplishments, knowing that your support contributes to the miracle work that we do.
Now more than ever, the essence of ‘hope' is indispensable.
Hope for us, hope for Israel, hope for the world.
Thank you for your unwavering support.
Warm regards,
Oshrit Cowan Chief Executive Shaare Zedek UK

OPERATION SWORDS OF IRON

On October 7th we held our breath, we awoke to the devastating news that Israel was under attack. Whilst communities were preparing to celebrate one of the most joyful dates in the Jewish calendar news emerged of the atrocities perpetrated by Hamas terrorists.
For the first time in decades a nearby sports field became the hospitals helipad and patients were transferred both by MDA medivac and IDF helicopters. Although not a frontline hospital, we started to receive many victims from the south of Israel who were evacuated to safety. Among them, both soldiers and civilians and many pain-filled stories of loss.
In one particularly heart-wrenching case, the hospital treated two young children who were found abandoned on the border fence after their mother had been taken into captivity. Their father had survived and brought them directly to Shaare Zedek.
We also treated Eden Ram, an IDF soldier who survived the Hamas Terror attacks despite receiving 12
bullets to her body, read her story on pages 8-9.
Within hours of the declaration of War the hospital opened a mental health care unit within the Emergency Room for individuals suffering from shock and other emotional issues.
The solidarity of our staff, from all races and populations of the Jerusalem population, has been extraordinary and is indicative of the remarkable spirit of unity that has always defined Shaare Zedek.
Tragically, some of our staff have experienced personal losses during these trying times. Yet, amidst the grief, a sense of unity prevails. In the days following the initial attacks, Israel mobilised the largest reservist army in to action and started fighting back.

...continued from previous page
Over 200 dedicated individuals from Shaare Zedek, including doctors, nurses, and staff from various departments, seamlessly transitioned from their medical roles to don IDF uniforms while retired staff, motivated by a sense of duty, re-joined the hospital's ranks to support their Shaare Zedek family.
As the nation grapples with these challenging days, the message from Shaare Zedek is clear: the work must continue. The hospital stands as a beacon of strength and resilience, providing crucial medical care and unwavering support to the community, even in the face of adversity. The commitment of its staff, both present and past, exemplifies the unwavering spirit that defines Shaare Zedek and the people of Israel during these tumultuous times.

EDEN RAM A STORY OF SURVIVAL
Eden Ram is a survivor of the October 7th massacre.
On that fateful morning, she was on the Urim Southern District Base and woke at 6:30am to the sounds of sirens. She immediately ran to the shelter with six others, dressed only in flip flops, and pyjamas. No-one knew what was going on, but rumours soon started to circulate that terrorists had infiltrated the base.
Eden and her friends could not believe it. However, whilst sheltering they heard gunshots and immediately realised something was not right.

Feeling unsafe, they decided to run to the Operations Room, which also served as a safe room. As they fled the shelter, gunshots surrounded them, and Eden was shot in her left leg. She continued to run, the adrenalin keeping her going. She made it to the Operations Room where other soldiers who had already escaped and were inside, let her in.
“Then we started to hear the terrorists detonating explosives around the Operations Room as they attempted to get inside to us. For half an hour we heard shooting and grenades. All we could do was pray for the best. Door by door they got through until the only door left was the one that separated us from them. All this time we were hiding under a table, one on top of the other. I started sending goodbye messages to all my loved ones. They blew up the last door, came into the

room, and shot a volley of bullets at us without pause, screaming. When they were done, they waited a little, spoke in Arabic, searched for documents, checked that we were dead and then left. Throughout this I was not sure if I was dead or alive, I felt dead, but I could still see, hear, and feel. I waited for the final bullet that would hit me and kill me, but it never came.”
Eden stayed silent.
“I am lying there bleeding between the bodies of my friends, when suddenly I feel someone breathing. It was my friend Sahar. We waited there for 4 hours together until rescue arrived, during which time she took off her uniform to give me first aid. I began to touch my whole body to see where I was hit, how much I am bleeding, and how much time I have to live. I felt like I was dying.”
After four hours of lying in the dark Eden heard Hebrew voices. She was scared it could be a trick, but in her heart felt confident it was the IDF. She raised her hand out of the pile of bodies.
She was seen.
Eden had been shot 12 times in total, in her legs, her left hand and her shoulder, but miraculously she survived.
She was rushed to hospital, first the ER at Soroka in Be’er Sheva and then to Shaare Zedek, where she had two lifesaving surgeries to remove the 12 bullets. The first 48 hours were critical and for three days after, Eden was put on ventilation and kept heavily sedated. She was cared for by a multi-disciplinary team at Shaare Zedek and after two weeks was transferred to Sheba, Tel Hashomer, to continue her rehabilitation. Eden is a remarkable young woman and incredible example of survival; we wish her a future of only happiness and good health.

COMMITMENT TO EMERGENCY CARE
On September 9th 2023, the newly expanded Weinstock Department of Emergency Medicine opened its doors. A special ceremony took place, attended by Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion, Israel’s Minister of Health Moshe Arbel and other dignitaries and friends of the hospital.
This special occasion was significant because it coincided with the 20th anniversary of the tragic passing of Dr David Applebaum, the former Director of the Shaare Zedek Emergency Department. Dr Applebaum, along with his daughter Naava, lost their lives in a terror attack on the eve of her wedding in September 2003.

In an emotionally charged speech one of Dr Applebaum's younger children, Shayna Applebaum Abramson, now a nurse at Shaare Zedek, reflected on her father's professional legacy. She emphasized his vision of treating each patient as an individual, not merely a statistic, and thanked the dedicated staff who uphold this principle daily. She concluded by saying, “Abba (father) would certainly take great pride in all of you.”

The newly expanded department was meticulously designed with the patient at heart, aiming to make it much easier for them to move through each section, allowing for faster and more effective patient admission, triage and treatment.
Dr Todd Zalut, current Director of the Emergency Department shared “We really are committed to our patients and it’s important for us that they don’t have to wait too long, so we are hoping that with the development and expansion of the department, waiting times will significantly improve.”
As home to a Level One Trauma Centre, the Weinstock Department of Emergency Medicine stands as Jerusalem’s foremost urgent response facility, annually admitting over 100,000 patients and experiencing a ten percent increase in admissions each year.

Some patients arrive in life threating condition, following a heart attack, stroke or serious injury. Others have a worrying medical condition. Whatever the reason, they know they will get expert treatment, along with compassionate care in our Emergency Department.
It is thanks to the incredible generosity of donors in the UK and around the world that this expansion project was possible.

To ensure our doctors and nurses continue to have the tools they need to deliver the innovative top level of care for which Shaare Zedek is known.

ISRAELI MEDICAL TEAM PROVIDES CARE IN ARMENIA
On October the 4th 2023 Israel received a call from the Armenian government for help after hundreds of citizens were wounded after a fuel tank explosion.
Israel was the first country to land in Armenia with a medical delegation led by Professor Ofer Merin, Director General of Shaare Zedek. The delegation from Israel, made up of 14 medical professionals, was sent to provide intensive care treatment to hundreds of injured citizens including many burn victims.
Professor Merin shared "This is an unusual event on a global scale, with such a large number of burn victims. It is an honour and privilege to lead this worthy task, on behalf of the State of Israel, which is the first country to come to help.”
“I would like to thank the Ministry of Health for their commitment and the teams of Shaare Zedek and Soroka who immediately mobilized to embark on this important mission. We show once again that Israel is here to help everyone everywhere.”
The delegation included plastic surgeons, anaesthesiologists, intensive-care doctors, and specialist burn nurses. Professor

Merin and his teams are regarded among the best in the world and as the commander of the IDF field hospital he has led numerous medical relief missions to disaster regions around the world, including Turkey, Nepal, Haiti, and Syria.
Professor Merin and his team were in Armenia when they received the devastating news of October 7th and had an arduous journey home to Israel. Professor Merin left on the earliest flight available, and the other members of the delegation followed him 24 hours later.

TANZANIAN PARTNERSHIP
The work of Shaare Zedek and our medical professionals extends far beyond the walls of the hospital in Jerusalem and something we are so proud of is how our doctors give hope to the world through their research and teaching.
Professor Gabriel Izbicki, Director of the Pulmonary Institute at Shaare Zedek visited Zanzibar, Tanzania, with colleagues from Shaare Zedek to learn about the lack of basic medical equipment and knowledge about lung diseases in Zanzibar hospitals.
Professor Izbicki shared, “Our project began about a year-and-a-half ago. We visited two hospitals and
gave lectures on lung diseases, mostly COVID-19, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).”
At the Al-Rahma Hospital in the capital city of Zanzibar, the Shaare Zedek team were impressed by the level of the staff’s knowledge.
“They understood quite well the diseases, types of treatments, and the various inhalations, but when I asked them if they do tests to diagnose asthma and COPD, they said no. I was surprised and asked them if they referred patients to another hospital, and they again said no. I asked why, and they said that neither of them had the necessary medical equipment.”

Professor Izbicki discovered that doctors did not even have a Spirometer, a basic lung function device that measures the amount of air you can exhale in one second, and the total volume of air you can exhale in one forced breath. “It is impossible to distinguish between asthma and COPD without this device”, and misdiagnoses due to inadequate equipment can lead to further problems.
Professor Izbicki was saddened by what he saw in Zanzibar, and upon his return to Israel, set about trying to help the people he met on his trip. After almost a year of planning, he arranged for a medical delegation to visit Israel for a week of essential learning. Not only that, he was also able to arrange donations of essential medical equipment to be taken back to the region.
Dr Bukoro Nestori who was among the group that came to Israel had

never been on a plane before, but had dreamt of visiting Israel.
Professor Izbicki and his team were able to enrich Dr Bukoro’s medical know how with valuable hands-on experience as well as impart important medical knowledge that Dr Bukoro was able to take back to Zanzibar.
A very special trip that will help change the future of Pulmonary care in Tanzania.

GLOBAL FIRST AT SHAARE ZEDEK
In August 2023 Shaare Zedek Medical Centre became the first hospital in the world to perform a complex spinal surgery using augmented reality combined with robotic technology. Dr Cezar J Mizrahi performed the incredible procedure on a 25-year-old patient who had been admitted to the hospital’s Emergency Department after being seriously injured in a work-place fall.
The trauma team at Shaare Zedek swiftly diagnosed an unstable spine fracture that put the man at immediate risk for paralysis and other severe neurological damage. He was quickly transferred into the care of Dr Mizrahi, a Spine Neurosurgeon from the Spine Surgery Unit, and the Department of Neurosurgery.
The combination of AR (Augmented Reality) and robotics allowed Dr Mizrahi to perform a precise and minimally invasive procedure. “It made my life amazingly easy. I would even say a child could do a surgery with all this technology. The AR and robotics helped with positioning, trajectory, and planning,” he said.
The combination of AR, which is an interactive experience that combines the real world and computer-generated content, with robotic technology, did not speed up the surgery, but rather made it more ‘effective’.
The successful operation has given Dr Mizrahi hope that the technology may become an integral part of spinal surgeries going

forward, but he knows that these things take time to get fully implemented.
“It is a slow process. If I had to speculate, I would say that in about 10 years it will be standard to use AR and robotics for complex cases,” he said.
And although this technology is currently only used to perform spinal surgeries, Dr Mizrahi said he can see it being used for injuries on the entire body in the future.

THE HEROES THAT SAVED MY LIFE
In early 2023 Ilanit Liberman experienced the devastating trauma of an ectopic pregnancy. What followed were weeks of visits to Shaare Zedek, doctors’ appointments and a long recovery process. However the lasting memory from one of the most challenging experiences for Ilanit and her husband Meir is how well they were cared for at Shaare Zedek Medical Centre.
Following the trauma of the ectopic pregnancy, Ilanit suffered a very rare complication called an Arterial Venous Malformation, and it was thanks to Naomi Levy, Head Technician of Obstetrics
Ultrasound and Dr Eyal Mazaki, Director of the Obstetrics
Ultrasound Department, that it was discovered in time.
Together they diagnosed Ilanit with the extremely rare complication for which she
needed immediate surgery. Such a find in the ovary is almost unheard of and the situation posed a real and serious risk to her life.

As I was about to be rolled into surgery, one of the very special nurses Carmit told me "Cry, it's good to cry. Let yourself cry. It's good and normal. You'll see, everything will be good. You have an amazing team on your side."
And 24 hours later post-surgery Ilanit shared, “Meir and I are so relieved and grateful that this chapter is finally over and it's all thanks to these incredibly special people. To the heroes of our story: Dr Adam Farkas, Naomi Levy, Dr Eyal Mazaki and the incredible teams of the Vascular Anomalies

Clinic/Angiography Institute and Women's Ward at Shaare Zedek Hospital - All we can say is Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts. My life was saved by the incredible medical team at Shaare Zedek’s Women’s Clinic and Gynaecology Ward. These are the people, the heroes of Shaare Zedek. Normal, kind, caring and down to Earth, as the saying goes, ‘Not all heroes wear capes’.”

“As a group, we all felt privileged to visit Shaare Zedek, and hear not only about the history of the hospital and its values, but also about the incredible work that they are doing, especially during the current situation.”
“We had the privilege of visiting Shaare Zedek and seeing the plaque we dedicated in memory of my darling late mum, Sheila Davis. Walking round and seeing the ground-breaking medical work I knew mum was with us in spirit and looking down with pride at what she had helped to achieve. Knowing there is a permanent reminder of her and her generosity in her beloved Israel goes a small way to help mend our broken hearts.”
