The Path Forward

A Message From Frank Hechter, President

I am delighted to advise everyone that the planning, preparation and timeline for proceeding with renovations to resolve the deferred maintenance issues (HVAC - heating, ventilation and air conditioning; electrical, plumbing and reconstruction of the roof) as well improvements to the versatility of space utilization are nearing completion. To be entirely candid, the process has taken much longer than originally anticipated. The guiding principles in this process have been a thorough assessment of the needs, alternate resolutions, retains experts, due diligence and transparency. The Board has commissioned Joel Lazer of Lazer Grant Corporate Finance Inc., to research, prepare and submit a Business Plan that will reflect the financial sustainability of Congregation Shaarey Zedek and our L’Dor V'Dor Capital Campaign. When the Business Plan has been completed likely in April, 2020, Congregational Information meetings will be arranged to provide updates to our congregants regarding our Capital Campaign. As mentioned previously Neil Duboff is our Campaign Chairperson and he is assembling his campaign cabinet. As many of you are aware, we encountered an unexpected complication, specifically the need for asbestos abatement. The appropriate testing was done with core samples to assess the level of asbestos in our beloved synagogue. We recently received an informed rough order of magnitude which will serves as an educated estimate of cost and time to complete this aspect of the renovations. With this information, an RFP (request for proposals) will be prepared with expert advise and circulated to contractors capable of providing these services. Concurrently, an RFP is being prepared for the Project Manager to act in the best interests of our congregation with contractors before and during the renovation period.

/ShaareyZedekWinnipeg

To accommodate the renovations, we will require alternate facilities to accommodate all congregational activities. We will likely be out of the synagogue for a minimum of one High Holy Day celebration for 2021. It is our commitment that while out of the building the High Holy Days, daily Minyan, Shabbat Services, life cycle events, etc., will continue at the level and quality to which our congregation has been accustomed. The process is underway to identify alternate site(s) that will meet our needs. We anticipate that the asbestos abatement company and the project manager will be determined in May, 2020 after which, we will instruct Number TEN Architectural Group to proceed with working drawings and have our project manager cost the project, schedule the renovations and retain the contractor(s). All things falling into place as presented, the initiation of the asbestos abatement and the renovations will commence early February, 2021. I would like to extend sincere appreciation to the Blankstein family, and Gail Asper and the Asper Foundation, who have encouraged us to address the physical needs and improve the versatility of our synagogue. In addition, they have funded the costs to bring us to this point in time. A special thank you to Lorne Weiss who has dedicated himself to the L’Dor V'Dor project with enthusiasm, commitment and expertise. I will continue to update you as we follow our path forward.

The Myth of Hamantashen

A Message From Rabbi Matthew Leibl Have you ever play the game Telephone? We played as kids. Everyone sits in a circle – you need a pretty goodsized group – and whispers a message, one person to the next, until the “code phrase” has made it all the way back around. Not only does the original phrase never survive to the end, its replacement is usually hilariously un-close. Another game I remember from my days at Ramah Hebrew School was Bingo. School-wide bingo across the intercoms in every classroom on holidays like Purim. We filled out our own cards and every year I remember kicking myself because Oznei Haman always got called and I never remembered to use it for one of my squares. Every year!!! Oznei Haman!!! I guess I’ve always been drawn to the name Oznei Haman. I always found it odd the Hebrew name for those Purim treats we all love – Oznei Haman – is not a translation of the English name. Oznei Haman means Haman’s Ears. Hamantashen does not. Ever think about that? Where else does that happen? Purim has always been about exaggeration and an almost make-believe-like quality, so no one ever questioned it, but are we supposed to believe Haman had triangle-shaped ears? Come on! That’s just silly. So why are they called Haman’s Ears in Hebrew? The explanation I was always given was: Haman had a three cornered hat. The pastries are shaped like his hat. But that’s actually worse! What does a hat have to do with ears? That answer doesn’t explain anything. The whole thing never made sense to me. Oznei Haman. Haman’s Ears.

6

Besides, I always just called them what my Baba calls them. Hamantashen. Speaking of my Baba, a former Yiddish school teacher, I finally found out from her what the name Hamantashen means, because I never really asked before. The answer makes no sense either! Tashen is Yiddish for pockets. So Haman-tashen would be Haman’s Pockets. Doesn’t make sense. There’s not a single reference to pockets in the Megillah. What does make sense is Mahn-tashen or Muhntashen. “Mun” in Yiddish means poppyseed. Poppyseed Pockets. Aha! Especially when you add to the mix the original flavour for Hamantshen was poppyseed. Apricot, prune, and chocolate came later. The original, the classic, is poppyseed. (The hilarious Yiddish song “Hop Mayne Hamantashen” – which my Baba also sang for us as kids – even confirms it, with a lyric about flour, honey, and poppy being the simple ingredients.) The original name has to do with the original filling and has nothing to do with Haman. But if you say it a certain way…or maybe with an unfamiliar accent… I did a little more digging and found out the Hebrew name Oznei Haman seems to have been inspired by Italy, where Jewish people called their Purim delicacies Orecchi d’Aman – Haman’s Ears. In Italy, they seemed to have argued the “ears” part of the name is a reference to a medieval practice of cutting off one’s ears before hanging, and we know Haman died by hanging. Hmm.

The bottom line is, somewhere in that linguistic journey from Eastern Europe to Italy, Mahn-tashen became Haman-tashen and then Orecchi d’Aman. Someone misheard the Yiddish and mistakenly threw Haman into the mix to fill in the blank because, after all, this was a dessert for Purim. And that’s where the Hebrew picked it up as Oznei Haman.

There is something poetic, of course, that the name Haman’s Ears was a result of someone mis-hearing, but let’s not overdo it. Just something for you to think about as you finish your leftover Hamantashen. Or Oznei Haman.

A Message from Rabbi Aníbal Mass I want to talk to you about “Before leaving Mitzrayim you have to defeat its Pharaoh”. One of my favourite teachings about the word Mitzrayim, Egypt, is the one based on its etymology. The name is derived from the word tzar, “narrow” or “tight”. In other words, leaving our own Mitzrayim, means leaving our own areas of limitations, the things that prevent us from reaching our full potential. This is something so important that is reflected in the Festivals and Shabbat Kiddush, where we say: “Zecher Litziat Mitzrayim”, “a remembrance of the departure from Egypt.” You may ask yourself "what does Mitzrayim have to do with my everyday life if the Exodus is something that happened 4000 ago?" It is because 4000 years later, we are still trapped in our own Mitzrayim. What is even more interesting is that the problem is not really Mitzrayim, but the Pharaoh that enslaved us there! Mitzrayim was a bad place, but if it weren’t for the Pharaoh, we could have left it whenever we wanted to! Slavery implies that there is a taskmaster telling you what to do, controlling your life, stopping you from leaving the bad place. Imagine in the year 2020 being unable to choose the way you want to feel, the way you want to act, the way you want to experience life? Can you imagine such a situation? Well, just as there was a physical Mitzrayim and a physical Pharoah, today we experience a psychological Mitzrayim and a psychological Pharaoh. The Pharaoh of your life today is what prevents you from choosing the way you want to live your life. You may have chosen to be happy but you can feel that you are not. You may have decided that you don’t want to get angry so easily but you do. You may have said to yourself that you don’t want to be stressed out, but you are. You want to leave the bad place, but find that you can’t.

8

The inability to live the life you want is a result of being under the thumb of the Pharaoh. You want to have the most amazing relationship with your children, you want to have to most fantastic relationship with your spouse. You want to exercise more. You want to volunteer more. You want to do so many things… but you can’t. That’s a Mitzrayim, a narrow place, but only because Pharaoh doesn’t let you go. Sometimes we forget why we left Egypt. Interesting that we forget it when we say at least twice a day during our daily prayers: “I am Adonai, your God, who brought you from Egypt, to be your God. I am Adonai, your God.” The only way to become all you want to be is to get rid of that negative voice inside your head, that toxic Pharaoh, and to let Adonai to take over to bring you to the Promised Land. The Torah and the Mitzvot were not given to us to add a burden to our lives, but rather to help us develop the character we need to leave Egypt once and for all. This Pesach, leave your Mitzrayim behind.... but don’t forget that unless you get rid of Pharaoh first, you risk returning to the narrow place. Ashira, Ronen and I wish you all Chag Sameach.

It's Just a Matter of Time!!

A Message From Dr. Rena Secter Elbaze, Engagement and Education Director It’s Just a Matter of Time!! This was the topic of the February 6th meeting of The Real Women of Jewish Winnipeg, a networking group at Shaarey Zedek which addresses women of diverse demographic backgrounds and interests. This past session sought to empower the attendees with strategies to get a hold of that precious commodity that is constantly slipping through our fingers…TIME! As we head into spring, time seems to accelerate as we try to take in all the opportunities to celebrate Jewish life and community. Below are just a few of the exciting programs that have taken place at our synagogue or are yet to take place… On February 7th, we had a very successful Tu B'shevat Family Shabbat Dinner with almost 100 participants! The dinner, which was sponsored by Rick Lee and Laurie Shapiro, included an uplifting performance by the Dor Chadash choir and lots of singing and dancing to celebrate the Jewish new year for trees. Later in the month over 20 volunteers came out to sort and pack food at our monthly Winnipeg Harvest Night. This gathering included participants from our young adult group who have found a meaningful way to connect to the synagogue and to each other through their volunteering. On February 23rd, the Winnipeg Jewish Chorus and the Shaarey Zedek Quartet, under the direction of conductor Justin Odwak, performed an inspirational concert in honour of Tu B'shevat, Ode the Urban Forest. The beautiful music and thought-provoking poems were a reminder of the relevancy of the holiday of Tu B'shevat in our modern lives. As we headed into the month of March, we kicked off our second session of Hebrew Reading on March 3rd. Students of the level II session were able to work on reading skills to help them feel at ease in the prayer service. This is the second year that Shaarey Zedek is offering this free course in conjunction with NJOP the National Jewish Outreach Project.

12

On March 5th we gathered for the class Shabbat: A Taste of the World to Come to bake those special cookies our Babas used to make. This took place in the framework of a class on the theme of Shabbat during which we explored Zmirot, the melodious hymns that are sung during the three sabbath meals. On Sunday March 8th, we celebrated our Annual Purim Carnival with everyone’s favourite bouncers, glitter tattoos, face painting, fun crafts and all the treats and snacks you have come to expect including those perfect Hamentashen… three crispy corners with soft tasty fillings. This crowd-pleasing celebration sponsored by Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood, was followed by a Purim puppet show performed by Rabbi Aníbal Mass and the Dor Chadash singers. The very next day we started a new tradition for the Megillah Reading which included a family style Seudah banquet in our Auditorium sponsored by Rena and Barry Shenkarow, including hotdogs, fries veggies, and Hamentashen for dessert. Participants were able to follow the story on a giant screen with Hebrew and English transliteration including hilarious graphics that entertained both kids and adults alike. On Friday, March 27th young adults gathered at the home of Rena and Daniel Elbaze for a musical Kabbalat Shabbat led by Rabbi Mass followed by a home hosted dinner and thought-provoking discussion and uplifting song. Now suddenly, Passover is on our doorsteps… and the topic of time and Time Management becomes even more relevant. This holiday holds a deep message with regards to our relationship with time. Often in our frenzy to prepare for the holiday, we forget that Passover is also called “A Time of Our Freedom”, Zeman Cheruteinu… not just the Freedom we think about when we conjure up the Exodus but of our own personal freedom and how much control we really have over the time in our lives.

In his important work, The Sabbath, Abraham Joshua Heschel explains how Jewish life moved to the realm of time when our Holy Space, the Temple in Jerusalem, was destroyed. All our rituals and activities exist in designated shared times where we celebrate, commemorate and worship together. Passover, also called Chag Ha Aviv, the holiday of spring, is connected to the season at a specific time of year. Rabbi Maurice Lamm explains the importance of having these specific designated times when he writes “Anything that can be done at any time by anybody will be done at no time by nobody”. From this we understand that in order to exercise our Freedom over time, we must consciously MAKE time, or carve out a piece of it where we can take action to address the things we care about. This is real Freedom!

Happy Pesach!

Sisterhood

Louise Raber, Sisterhood, Co-President In the past few days, Sandy Polanski and I have been working on our application for the Triannual Jewels in the Crown Award. This award is given to Sisterhoods who are members in good standing of Women’s League International, who participate in Women’s League Torah Fund and who attend a region conference and /or meeting. As we gathered our information we realized that we should qualify once again as we did in 2014 in Las Vegas and 2017 in Washington, DC. We fulfill the requirements in almost all categories. If you aren’t aware, let me give you snippet, of what we do and have done. We were asked and agreed to donate a Mezzuzah and parchment to Hillel at the University of Manitoba. We attended with Rabbi Mass and Rena Elbaze when it was affixed to the door way. We assist financially and with volunteers for the Shaarey Zedek’s Chanukah Extravaganza and the annual Purim Carnival. Sisterhood acts as greeters and then insures there are treats for the participants for the November General Monash Remembrance Commemoration. We were particularly touched this past year by the young men and women of the grade 6 class of The Gray Academy. They are insuring the veteran’s and their sacrifices will not be forgotten.

We have a Book Club with content from “Women’s League Reads” reading list. A Sisterhood member volunteers at the weekly Family Service. Sisterhood also donated new puppets and siddurs in the past year. The Life Lights Pamphlets on display on the left wall as you enter from the back door are purchased by Sisterhood. We celebrate Sisterhood Shabbat every year where all participants are sisterhood members (and this year some of their daughters!). Our annual Tealess Tea fulfills our Torah Fund donation. Some of our members sew Shrouds for the Chesed Shel Emes. We run a beautiful Judaica Shop. We volunteer at the West Broadway Christmas lunch, and donate toys, blankets and toiletries. Our Mitzvah Group visits The Simkin Centre twice a year, sponsoring the entertainment and ensuring the residents have special treats. We support Willow Place with a yearly monetary donation, bags and bags of new and nearly new goods and a member volunteers to drive the women to appointments. We also donate to JCFS. We have programs. We’ve collected and donated new and gently used bras and had a speaker who spoke about Breast Health. Another speaker spoke about Heart Health and we had a CPR program. We learned how to do CPR on adults and children and how to use an AED.

Year round, the Gift Shop is always there to provide your needs. We try to cover all necessities, but if you have any ideas or requests please let us know. Also, we are always looking for new volunteers and would love to have you join us. It doesn’t have to be on a regular schedule, a few hours every so often would be greatly appreciated.

MARCH TO JUNE HOURS: SUNDAYS & THURSDAYS 10:00 AM TO 1:00 PM CLOSED April 9, 12, 16

We joined NCJW to learn about the poor working conditions of the garment workers in Bangladesh. We volunteer to be greeters and sit on the Bimah for Shabbat services. When there is a Bar or Bat Mitzvah a sisterhood member presents books and Candlesticks and a Kiddush cup. These gifts are purchased by Sisterhood and The Shaarey Zedek Board. For 58 years sisterhood has organized and presented an Interfaith Luncheon. Always well attended we have had timely, engaging speakers. This year, I am so proud to have Marisa Hochman join me as co-chair of this event. Trans Athletes Right to Compete: Exploring Sex, Gender and Sexuality in the world of Women’s Sport…”. Join our guest speaker Sandra (Sandi) Kirby, PhD; MA; BE;BPE (Olympian, Sport Scientist, Gender Equity and Athlete Safety Advocate) to find out what happens when biological males transition to female and want to continue to compete, but now in women’s sport. Rabbi Matthew Leibl will put on his sportscaster hat to moderate what promises to be an eye opening fireside chat on a truly timely topic. I’m sure you now realize as do I how much Sisterhood does at Shaarey Zedek and for our Community in general. Why not join to financially support and or be an active member and volunteer with sisterhood!

Torah Fund

In the coming weeks you will receive your i nvitation to the Sisterhood’s annual TEA-LESS TEA. The Tea-Less tea money goes to Torah Fund in support of the five Seminaries around the world. This year the campaign is CHESED which means “Kindness”. The word can also be translated as “lovingkindness,” to convey the deep love that animates Jewish acts of kindness, done without thought of reward. The Bible has numerous examples of chesed, such as Abraham and Sarah welcoming three strangers to their tent in the heat of the day; Abraham’s servant’s prayer for a wife for Isaac, answered by Rebecca who offers water to him and to his camels; and Ruth, who shows loyalty and kindness to Naomi, adopting her religion and peoplehood, after Naomi has experienced great loss. The rabbinic tradition enacted many laws to formalize our commitment to kindness, making chesed one of the three central pillars of Jewish life, as Shimon HaTzaddik taught: “The world rests on three things, on Torah, on service of God, and on deeds of kindness” (Pirkei Avot 1:2). The 5780 (2019-2020) Torah Fund pin depicts a heart surrounded by three circles, one larger than the next. This symbolizes the heart of kindness, which Jews enact in ever-widening realms of generosity: from family, to community, to the larger world; from North America, to Israel, to the world; or from sisterhood, to region, to the Receive the 5780 pin larger world of Women’s League as our gift to you in for Conservative Judaism. The Wernick Reunion Guest Writer Gerry Posner

Who said history cannot repeat itself? For me, on a cold, wintery November day in Toronto at a Shabbat service in Toronto, I had a moment of deja vu. There I was at the Beth Tzedec Synagogue (which is many ways seems to me to be a version of Shaarey Zedek as I knew it growing up multiplied by twenty) and who was present delivering the sermon? None other than the former Rabbi of the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue (1979-87), Rabbi Eugene Wernick. How did this come about you ask? It started with the hiring by Beth Tzedec of son Steven Wernick as the Senior Rabbi at the shul. He took over about four months ago, but his formal installation was only in November. That was of course a very moving evening when Rabbi Steven Wernick was formally installed by his father, Rabbi Eugene Wernick. I say that, as the senior Wernick put his hands on the shoulders of his son Steven (who by the way talks fondly of his growing up years in Winnipeg) and give him words of welcome into the fold at Beth Tzedec, I thought of another similar kind of father-son team, as in Gordie Howe who was able to suit up in a hockey uniform along with his sons Marty and Mark Howe in the professional hockey world. In both situations, the nachas and pride was palpable. Before the induction service began (which also included the Associate Rabbi, a woman as in Rabbi Robyn Fryer Bodzin), I approached Wernick the senior and he claimed to recognize my face. That was hard to believe as it was some thirty-two years since we last saw one another. Yet he remembered many names from Winnipeg that I threw at him. He was the same guy I knew back in Winnipeg, though he was not quite as large a man as he was then. But the real surprise for me came at the Shabbat service. When the Torah reading was completed and the Torah returned to the ark and the Musaf service was about to start, Rabbi Steven Wernick declared that since his father was still in town after the installation a few nights earlier, and since Dad was at the synagogue, he had invited Dad to get to work and give the

sermon that day. And give it Dad did. I took myself back to any Shabbat service, for example in 1984, a mere thirty-five years ago and pictured myself listening to the voice of Rabbi Eugene Wernick. He was a guy who had depth is his words and power in the delivery of them. Well, even though the physical stature of the man has diminished slightly (though he still is bigger than me), that voice has not lost any of its volume and resonance. He still had a significant message to deliver and from what I heard, he made a positive impression on those that were in the chapel that morning. When I chatted with Rabbi Wernick the Senior after the service at the kiddish, we spoke of his time in Winnipeg and at Shaarey Zedek which he recalled with affection. After as we said good-bye, he kissed me on the forehead and you could tell he, like me, was touched by the connection which we re-established after so many years. I know I sure enjoyed that fleeting retreat to my past with Rabbi Eugene Wernick.
