Let The Old Become Renewed, And The New Become Sacred

Shalom

Shalom CSZ Chaverim/ Chaverot (friends)!

Rabbi Solomon Schechter, one of the founders of what we today call Conservative Judaism, once taught: “It is not the mere revealed Bible that is of first importance to the Jew, but the Bible as it is interpreted by tradition…It follows that the center of authority is actually removed from the Bible, and placed in some living body, which, by reason of its being in touch with the ideal aspirations and the religious needs of the age, is best able to determine the nature of Judaism. This living body, however, is not represented by any section of the nation, or any corporate priesthood or Rabbi-

hood, but by the collective conscience of Catholic Israel, (catholic in the universal sense, meaning “universal”) as embodied in the universal synagogue...It is neither Scripture, nor primitive (Rabbinic) Judaism, but general custom that forms the real rule of practice… Liberty was always given to the great teachers of every generation to make modifications and innovations in harmony with the spirit of existing institutions....”

Taken in concert with the wise teaching of Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, the first Chief Rabbi of the State of Israel who posited that the flourishing of the Jewish People will be predicated upon our willingness to: “Allow for the old to become renewed and the new to become sacred”, we at Congregation Shaarey Zedek intend use the upcoming High Holy-Day Season to set the tone for a year dedicated to forging a contemporary Judaism that speaks to the minds, hearts, and spirits of modernday seekers. We warmly invite you to join us for this exciting and soul-stirring journey as we quest for a New Year, and a new era, filled with meaning, consequence, and purpose as we: “Allow for the old to become renewed and the new to become sacred!”

With blessings for a Shanah Tovah U’Metukah, a sweet, healthy and prosperous New Year! One filled to overflowing with relevance and uplift.

With deep affection,

Rabbi Carnie Shalom Rose, D.Div. Senior Rabbi

The Season Of The Spiritual “Reboot”

Rabbi Anibal Mass

We are approaching the High Holidays — the Jewish New Year, the Days of Awe, the season when Jews all over the world gather in synagogues to pray, reflect, and try not to spill honey on their machzorim.

For many, this time of year is filled with questions: What does God want from me? Am I a good person? Am I going to be forgiven?

The Jewish answer to these kinds of questions begins with one of the most beautiful concepts in our tradition: Teshuvah. Often translated as “repentance,” it really means “return.” Return to what? To who you really are. To the best version of yourself. To the person you know, deep down, you were created to be.

Teshuvah isn’t about guilt or beating yourself up for not being perfect. The Talmud teaches that “In the place where those who have done teshuvah stand, even the completely righteous cannot stand.” In other words: your mistakes don’t disqualify you — they can actually elevate you. When we face them honestly and take steps to change, we come back stronger.

This is why sometimes I tap into my computer science background and call the High Holidays the season of the spiritual “Reboot.” As we do with that stubborn computer, we get to hit the reset button — not to erase the past, but to get rid of everything weighing you down.

So how do we do Teshuvah?

Maimonides gives a simple, practical, fivestep process:

Recognize what you’ve done wrong — or what you’ve left undone. (This might involve talking to loved ones… or listening when they talk to you.)

Regret — not in the sense of self-pity, but a genuine wish that you had acted differently.

Confess — speak it out, first to God, and then to another person you’ve wronged.

Resolve never to repeat it — even if you know you might slip again, make a sincere commitment.

Act differently the next time you’re in the same situation. That’s the ultimate proof of change.

Sounds simple? Yes. Easy? Probably not. But that’s why we do it together, as a community.

Come Sing with the Dor Chadash Youth Choir!

Looking for something fun, meaningful, and full of music for your kids? The Dor Chadash Children’s Choir is the perfect place for them to laugh, sing, and shine! Every week, kids come together to make music, make friends, and feel proud as they learn songs that celebrate our traditions and community.

It’s more than just singing – it’s building confidence, teamwork, and memories that last a lifetime. Plus, the kids get the thrill of performing at Shaarey Zedek events and sharing their voices with everyone!

That’s why at the Shaarey Zedek we’ll have a profoundly spiritual Kirtan Selichot, an uplifting Rosh Hashanah, and an inspiring Yom Kippur for every age— an entire spiritual framework to support each of us in this work.

So, this is my Practical Advice for the Season:

Start small. You don’t need to overhaul your whole life before the end of Yom Kippur. Pick one thing you want to change, and work on that. Small victories lead to big growth.

Forgive yourself along the way. If God is patient enough to wait for you year after year, you can be patient with yourself.

Make it joyful. Teshuvah isn’t only about tears — it’s also about rediscovering joy, meaning, and connection. The Hasidic masters taught that sadness closes the heart, but joy opens it to God.

As we approach the High Holidays, I invite you to see teshuvah not as a heavy burden, but as a gift. We get a fresh start. We get to let go of grudges — including the ones we hold against ourselves. We get to walk into the new year lighter, freer, and more awake to the possibilities before us.

So, take a deep breath. Call that friend or family member you’ve been avoiding. This is the time to try that apology you’ve been rehearsing in your head. And when you dip your apple in honey this year, remember: sweetness isn’t just what we wish for the new year — it’s what we create through the way we live it.

Rebbetzin Ashira, Ronen and I would like to wish all of you a Shanah Tovah u’Metukah — may it be a good and sweet year for all of us.

A Year Of Renewal And Growth At Shaarey Zedek A Message From The President

As we welcome the new year of 5786, I find myself reflecting on where we’ve been as a congregation, where we are now, and where we are headed together. Rosh Hashanah is not only a time of personal reflection and renewal, but also a moment for us, as a community, to take stock of our shared journey.

This past year has been one of remarkable transition and growth. Perhaps most importantly, we have fully onboarded our new Senior Rabbi, Rabbi Carnie Shalom Rose, D.Div., who, together with Rabbi Mass and Cantor Emery, is working tirelessly to create meaningful and inspiring experiences for our congregation. From the bimah to education programs, to personal moments of connection and support, their leadership is helping us strengthen both our spiritual life and our sense of community.

We are also seeing the fruits of our strategic plan come to life in tangible ways. Our childcare centre has expanded to full capacity and even has a waitlist; an incredible sign of both the trust families are placing in us and the vibrancy of Jewish life here in Winnipeg. Our newly renovated event space has already begun welcoming simchas and community gatherings, adding joy and energy to our building. We’ve installed new memorial walls, providing a beautiful space to honour loved ones. Our new Siddurim, launched earlier this month, will continue to enrich our prayer services with accessibility and meaning. And we are thrilled to welcome two young Israeli ambassadors, Ron and Yam to Winnipeg, who are infusing our community with their spirit, culture, and connection to Israel for the next year.

Each of these developments, large and small, reflects the themes guiding us forward: connection, learning, sustainability, and renewal. And yet, none of this would be possible without you, our members, volunteers, supporters, and friends. The strength of Congregation Shaarey Zedek lies not only in its history or its structure, but in the people

who show up, who care, and who invest their time and heart in this community.

As we enter the Days of Awe, I am filled with gratitude for what we have accomplished together and excitement for the road ahead. May this new year bring blessing, health, and joy to you and your loved ones, and may we continue to grow together as a congregation rooted in tradition, open to innovation, and united in purpose.

CSZ

A Message From The Executive Director

Let the old become new and the new become sacred…” the theme chosen for this year’s High Holy Days is especially poignant in the way it describes our efforts over the past year to honour our traditions while finding new and creative ways to keep the things that bind us to our past, relevant and engaging.

One of the biggest challenges we had with the renovation, was how to ensure the continuity of the tradition of honouring the memory of our departed through the 2500 + memorial yahrzeit plaques in the Rabbi Berkal Chapel.

Throughout the pandemic while leading services in the Chapel, I noticed how congregants would gravitate to the pews closest to the plaques of their loved ones. The plaques created a powerful connection for our congregants, and many people expressed their hopes that the plaques would return to their “traditional” place on the wall after the renovation.

Alas, the new configuration of the Chapel, with a more open partition wall offered less surface to accommodate the existing bronze plaques. The plaques themselves, with obsolete screw-in light bulbs needed to be turned on manually according to the Hebraic calendar.

The process was very time consuming and impractical… we needed a concept that would increase the surface area and that could be computer automated to manage a more economical LED lighting system. We already had an automated digital screen in the Grand Foyer, sponsored by the Asper family, that uses a software from a company called Planned Legacy that is based on the Hebrew calendar… why not look into creating something similar with the wall plaques!

We ran the idea by architect Lloyd Secter who along with architect Marcy SecterZ”L

had redesigned the Chapel during the time they had been involved on the house and building Committee. Lloyd and son architect Dov then chair of the House and Building Committee, suggested we connect with glass artist Warren Carther who had done the glass etched doors of the sanctuary and the Chapel Ark.

Slowly the concept came together of installing back-lit, glass etched plaques that could fill the space between the Leo Mol stain glass windows. The extended gridwork between the stain glass windows would allow us to keep the family grouping together while providing space for more plaques. This reconstitution was made possible thanks to the diligent guidance of Director of Communications and Marketing Robert Didych with the support of Estelle Raber. We met with Warren Carther in his studio and slowly the concept began to unfold to provide a bright uplifting space within the Chapel to accommodate all of these challenges.

In his Winnipeg studio, Warren produces sculpture that can be assembled and installed virtually anywhere in the world.

His artwork is featured at five international airports including the Charles de Galle Airport in Paris and in other significant buildings including the Canadian Embassies in Tokyo and London.

How exciting to bring this level of professionalism to beautify our spiritual home and to elevate the mitzvah of remembering our loved ones, through art and light!

The commandment of Hiddur Mitzvah, beautifying the mitzvah is a Jewish concept… while some may be satisfied with minimum standards, the Jewish tradition recognizes and encourages the addition of an aesthetic dimension.

The project surpassed all of our expectations

… including the timelines that we had initially communicated to the congregation. It is now finally with great excitement that we present them to you as we enter into our second year at Shaarey Zedek.

I invite you to explore our beautiful Chapel during the Days of Awe and into the calendar year.

Warm Regards!

NOTE: There are a limited number of plaques available for purchase at $1,500/plaque. Please contact the synagogue office at 204452-3711 to reserve a plaque.

Music, Siddurim and Another New Beginning Cantor Leslie Emery

Music is an integral part of spiritual expression and from the perspective of our tradition an integral facet of prayer. In the study of Gematria, the spiritual practice exploring the numerical value of Hebrew letters, we find that the Hebrew word for song, Shirah contains the same numerical value as the word for prayer, tefillah. For the music lovers out there, this is what we feel in our hearts and souls as we listen to our favourite songs, or soak in the melodies of the service. As the Talmud teaches, where there is a song, there is a prayer (Berachot 6a).

As the Cantor for our congregation, it has been a great source of joy to see so many of our community seizing the opportunity to express themselves musically.

Over the past year I have witnessed so many embrace the multifaceted experience of Jewish and contemporary music. Whether you have been singing with the Ruach Choir, davening along in services, tuning in online, chanting Torah, Haftarah or Megillah or adding a meaningful song to one of our concerts this past year, I am so grateful for each one of you and find myself continually inspired to provide meaningful opportunities for spiritual expression. If you are looking to participate actively in any of these forms or have your own ideas for musical experiences or meaningful melodies, please let me know.

There is much to look forward to this Fall. Our High Holy Days Services are coming together beautifully, and we are preparing ourselves to offer our best as a congregation once more. Many new voices have appeared to deepen our offering, as Torah readers as well as in the Ruach Choir. We have welcomed the newest addition to our clergy team Rabbi Carnie Rose whose voice has added so much already through his teachings and love of music. Rabbi Anibal Mass has his youth band engaged to lead a lively and meaningful Family Service. The Ruach Choir and our Quartet are working hard to engage us all in a powerful prayer experience.

This past year Rabbi Anibal, myself, along with members of our Ritual Committee have spent a considerable effort to put together a Siddur that will allow our community to

delve into our services on a deeper level. I am thrilled to share that we will be officially launching the Siddur on Shabbat morning, Sept. 6th. All are welcome to join us!

Our new Siddur provides text in Hebrew, English, as well as Transliteration for each prayer, allowing everyone to participate and add their voice to our prayers, who walks through our doors. One facet I am particularly excited about is that our new Siddur does an excellent job letting the Davener know where different texts come from. I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who contributed financially to the project. We are so grateful for your support.

I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude to our community. Thank you for another meaningful year of community, commemorations, celebrations and services.

Wishing you and those you love a Shanah Tovah U’Metukah, a Year of Goodness and Sweetness. I look forward to what we will build together this year.

L’Dor Va Dor Capital Campaign

The summer has been a whirlwind for me and my family as I imagine it has for you, trying to pack in as much activity as possible into the short but intense season. When I finally find the time to wind down, I like to take some time to reflect … to prepare for the “days of awe” and think about how much ground we have covered since we re-entered our sacred space a year ago.

I am feeling very awe inspired and a sense of fulfillment to have been a part of the ambitious L’Dor Va Dor capital campaign to revitalize our spiritual home. Reb Zalman Schachter in his book Aging to Saging, describes this feeling of fulfillment

when one has a Purpose in life and a Legacy to leave. He urges us to reflect on what impact we want to have… be it through the example we set by our actions, the initiatives or projects we create, the things we build through our actions or philanthropy and how we improve the lives of those around us.

The L’Dor Va Dor campaign is not only about the money, but also about the moral pledge to the next generations, that we believe in the future of this community and in this congregation… and that we are going to invest in it, both financially and through our engagement.

As you may be aware, we set out with an ambitious goal that grew in scope as we became aware of the many requirements of a building of this vintage and the changing times affecting our world. We added security infrastructures, audio visual capabilities and a childcare centre. We fixed problem areas as they surfaced… Our final expenditure was about $18 Million.

Through the efforts of our devoted team of canvassers have raised approximately $10,000,000. Other sources of funding have been through the synagogue investments for $3M and another $3M from the Provincial government.

Earlier this spring we celebrated the generous donations of the Asper Foundation and the Gail Asper and Family Foundation. We held a special ribbon cutting ceremony event in honour of the Tova Vickar and Family Childcare Centre. Later this fall we will celebrate the generous contribution of Marjorie Blankstein and family and an exciting gift from Richard Morantz and Sheree Walder.

Each and every gift all of you have contributed

is a precious reminder that you care! You have been investing in our spiritual home.

As you prepare yourselves spiritually for the new year ask yourself… if you haven’t already done so, what will your Purpose be and what Legacy do you want to leave?

Finally, As Reb Zalman states in his import guidebook to a beautiful life… Don’t wait!

If you’re going to repair the World, do it today!

A New Year

Talli Millo

The beginning of each new year is an opportunity for reflection, renewal and celebration. It is hard to believe that less than one year ago we were celebrating returning to our spiritual home on Wellington Crescent. Looking back at the year 5785, together we can celebrate the blessings of community, connection, and shared purpose that culminated in a truly memorable year.

Jewish tradition teaches us that one of the greatest mitzvot is to open our homes and hearts to others. In the Torah, Abraham and Sarah set the model of Hachnasat Orchim — welcoming guests — by rushing to greet travelers and offering them food, rest, and care. Their example has echoed through generations, reminding us that true holiness is expressed not only in prayer, but in the way

we create space for one another. This year, our congregation is honoured to welcome two young Israelis (Shinshinim) named Ron Barlevy and Yam Friedman into our community. These Shinshinim are being hosted by families within our congregation and will spend the year at Shaarey Zedek to assist with and lead various programming, and will participate actively in the Jewish community of Winnipeg.

Meet our Shinshinim!

Ron Barlevy

Ron grew up on Kibbutz Einat, located in central Israel near Petach Tikvah. With a special interest in cinema, Ron attended Thelma Yellin, a high school for arts. In addition to cinema, Ron is very interested in photography. During summers on the Kibbutz, Ron enjoyed working with children at various day camps. Ron has expressed the importance of supporting Jewish communities around the world and wants to help combat the epidemic of misinformation about Israel.

Ron joins us from Zichron Ya’akov, a town in northern Israel, just south of Haifa. In high school, Yam took a special interest in computer science and physiology, focusing on programming, coding, and learning about the human body. For the last four years, Yam has worked as a guide in various youth movements, and has led school trips, hikes, and special field trips during the holidays. Yam is excited to join our community after participating in a sister-cities program in Boca Raton last March. He looks forward to sharing his love for Israel with our congregation and community.

In welcoming Ron and Yam to our Shaarey Zedek community, we are living out the values of Hachnasat Orchim and embracing this timeless tradition in a very real and meaningful way. We look forward to learning with them, celebrating together, and sharing in the richness of our community.

In working with the Shinshinim, I personally look forward to a year of meaningful experiences,

mutual growth, and strengthened bonds, as we welcome these young leaders into our CSZ family.

With Rosh Hashanah, we are gifted a chance to begin again — to dream of what is possible and to build upon the strength of our community. May this year bring joy in our homes, strength in our community, and peace in our world.

Shanah Tovah u’Metukah – wishing you all a happy and new year.

Sisterhood

A new year is a turning point - a time to look back at the year that has passed and take stock, and a time to look ahead to the future and make plans. As we approach 5786 Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood has much to be proud of. Our past year was marked with new beginnings along with the continuation of longstanding traditions as we celebrated the Inaugural Weekend back in our fantastically renovated shul, as well as the 60th “Diamond” Anniversary of our annual Interfaith Luncheon, and 95 years of Sisterhood at SZ!

We kicked off 5785 with the induction of a new Co-President to our ranks and a substantial increase of 24 percent to our membership. Sisterhood doubled our annual contributions to JCFS and Willow Place, and sponsored a portion of the Inaugural Scholar in Residence Weekend, as well as chairing the Shabbat Dinner and Saturday Morning Kiddush for that event. We also added some new and popular programs to our roster including a fantastic SOLD-OUT Passover Paint Night

which saw 27 amazing women come together for an evening of art and creativity inspired by the flowing waters of Miriam’s story. The energy in the room was inspiring, and we look forward to continuing to add new and innovative programs like this in the coming year.

Our Mitzvah program delivered cookies and good cheer to Simkin Centre at Chanukah and Mother’s Day, and the Book Club and Tallit weaving programs continue to be successful favourites. The tallit weaving program now operates two classes per season, one during the daytime and one in the evening. In addition, this year a grant was secured to fund the purchase of new looms and essential supplies and materials that will keep our weaving program running smoothly well into the future.

In April we sent a small contingent to the Women’s League of Conservative Judaism Intracontinental Regional Conference in Overland Park, Kansas where they met with Sisterhood members from Affiliates all over the

midwest. It was exciting and energizing to see the scope of our organization on a grander scale and to meet so many other wonderful Sisterhood members. We brought renewed enthusiasm and new ideas back home with us and look forward to the ICR conference in Oklahoma City this coming April - stay tuned for further details!

May was a big month for Sisterhood this year! It began with Sisterhood Shabbat - a spiritual experience that saw mothers and daughters lead prayers together and a full Bimah of Sisterhood members singing Adon Olam along with Cantor Leslie Emery. Our Sisterhood led the service from start to finish! In addition, we closed out a successful Torah Fund Campaign having exceeded our annual goal.

A highlight to cap off a successful year was our 60th Diamond Anniversary Interfaith

Luncheon with guest speaker Lisa Lewis which saw 170 attendees including Her Honour the Honourable Anita Neville, the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba and honoured guests and Elders from the Clan Mothers Healing Village come together to celebrate 60 years of “connection, tradition, strength and light,” as Lisa so aptly described it. She went on to elaborate that “Diamonds are beautiful, yes - but more than that, they are strong…they are formed under pressure, shaped by time and they shine in even the darkest places.” Lisa reflected on the shared resilience of our peoples “that shines through in our laughter and in our ceremonies and in our shared values.”

It was a very special day, and we were thrilled to have so many members of our community come out to share it with us.

And now we look ahead to 5786 which beckons full of promise. Our membership continues to grow and if you have not done so already, please renew your annual membership - now is the perfect time to do so! This year we plan to continue our time-honoured traditions, while also adding some new programs and flair to our well-loved repertoire. Stay tuned for more details as we will post our upcoming Calendar soon.

Torah Fund is our largest annual single charitable fundraising cause. The funds raised from donations to the Torah Fund Campaign are used to benefit students studying at five different institutes of Jewish Learning including the Jewish Theological Seminary and the Seminario Rabbinico Latinoamericano which were attended by Rabbi Mass (cantorial studies) and Rabbi Carney Rose.

Our Torah Fund Campaign for 5786 is now

open and all donations are most gratefully accepted. The theme of this year’s campaign is Oseh Shalom - Maker of Peace. For a minimum donation of $180 a beautifully designed pin is gifted to the donor. The pins change from year to year based on the campaign theme. Many women choose to collect the pins over many years and often they are gifted L’Dor Va Dor from one generation to the next.

You will see our Sisterhood Members proudly sporting their Torah Fund Pins at shul on the High Holidays and throughout the year to raise awareness for Torah Fund and its role in developing the Jewish educators, rabbis, cantors, synagogue administrators, social workers and lay leaders of tomorrow. The campaign is open from now through until the spring, but we find that making your donation pledge early is a wonderful way to welcome a brand-new year and gives you the opportunity to wear your beautiful Torah Fund Pin all year long.

Contact us at sisterhood@szwinnipeg.ca to learn more. We have so much to offer and would love to see you come out and join us this year. There is lots of opportunity to get in on the action and become involved in all things Sisterhood!

May this year be a year of peace for us all,

Wishing you a Shanah Tovah u’Metuka
