Rabbi David Wolpe Scholar-in-Residence December 3-5, 2015

Named the most influential Rabbi in America by Newsweek Magazine and one of the 50 most influential Jews in the world by the Jerusalem Post, David Wolpe is the Rabbi of Sinai Temple in Los Angeles, California. He previously taught at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in New York, the American Jewish University in Los Angeles, Hunter College, and UCLA. Rabbi Wolpe’s work has been profiled in the New York Times, and he is a columnist for Time.com, he regularly writes for many publications, including The LA Times, the Washington Post’s On Faith website, The Huffington Post, and the New York Jewish Week. He has been on television numerous times, including the Today Show, Face the Nation, ABC This Morning, and CBS This Morning. In addition, Rabbi Wolpe has been featured in series on PBS, A&E, the History Channel, and the Discovery Channel. Rabbi Wolpe is the author of eight books, including the national bestseller Making Loss Matter: Creating Meaning in Difficult Times. Rabbi Wolpe’s new book is titled, David, the Divided Heart available from Yale University Press.

Something new and beautiful is coming to Shaarey Zedek this July.

In response to numerous requests for a shorter, more meaningful Shabbat morning service; inspired by the recent visit of Rabbi Sid Schwarz; and at the request of the Shaarey Zedek Ritual Committee, Cantor Mass and I have started work on something entirely new: a 90-minute Shabbat morning service, with instrumental accompaniment, favoring qualitative spiritual experience over quantitative pages and pages of prayer.

This may or may not represent a permanent change in our Shabbat morning service. We will try it over the summer beginning July 4, and then evaluate the results. The service will begin at 10:00 AM followed by Kiddush then Torah L’Chayim. Inevitably, there will be people who will be uncomfortable with this new format. Our usual Shabbat morning crowd has gotten used to something very different – something which has remained fundamentally unchanged for many years.

Winnipeg’s own Rabbi Zalman Schacter-Shalomi, of blessed memory, was a pioneer of Jewish experimental prayer.

Decades ago, Reb Zalman defined the essential problem.

According to Reb Zalman, the words of Jewish prayer are “freeze-dried onto the pages of the prayer book.” Reb Zalman then dedicated his sixty-year career as a spiritual teacher to discovering ways to revivify and reconstitute these “freeze-dried” words, so they can once again nourish our starving Jewish souls.

However, even our Shabbat morning regulars have begun to complain that our usual three hour service has become too much for them. This is true all the more so for the 95% of our congregation who opted out of our Shabbat morning service long ago.

There can be no doubt that ours is a spiritually starved generation. Our society, our educational system, and our religions too – all have opted out of imparting a sense of higher meaning or purpose to living. However, by its very nature, the human spirit cannot be ignored forever. People today are actively seeking a deeper meaning for themselves and their families. They just aren’t seeking it in synagogues or churches – and for good reason.

My very strong feeling is that the various ways we fill our Shabbat mornings – with shopping, with driving our kids to athletic and other activities, with sports and other entertainment – create a Shabbat-shaped spiritual void in our lives. Anyone who understands, even in a small way, how Shabbat observance allows the Creator to fulfill the purpose of creation – to know Him or Her through human eyes – must realize that other seemingly important Saturday morning activities are ridiculously secondary by comparison.

On the other hand, in our attempt to be faithful to the traditions of our ancestors, we at the synagogue have been guilty of erecting barriers to participation by typical modern Jews. A friend of mine put it this way: “People feel tremendous guilt over never coming to synagogue. But there is nothing about the synagogue service that is aesthetically pleasing enough to draw them in.”

So, Cantor Mass and I have a task over the next few weeks: to construct a service in which the gates of meaning are thrown open; in which someone – anyone – can experience something deeper, more moving, more spiritual, than anything else in the course of a typical week – all without knowing Hebrew, without being a regular Shabbat attendee, and without even believing in God. It’s a tall order. But we are not alone. Outside of fundamentalist religion, non-participation in religious services has become a widespread phenomenon. In this respect, liberal Christian churches are far worse off than most synagogues.

This is the reason why so many similar prayer experiments are taking place throughout the Jewish and Christian world today.

I see this new prayer initiative as a first step towards re-purposing our synagogue, and reclaiming it as a place for spiritual questing and experience. There are synagogues where Shabbat morning is a viable alternative to other activities; where people feel inspired and enriched by their synagogue experience; where synagogue is, in short, a venue for the descent of the Divine Presence. Cantor Mass and I are working hard to make Shaarey Zedek one of these blessed places.

Summertime is lake time. And certainly, the experience of the Divine One is much more vivid in Nature than in the city. But I would urge you to give one of our new Shabbat morning summer services a try. Why? Because there is nothing in the world – not even the beauty of Nature – that can match a congregation whose prayers pierce the heavens, and bring the blessings of peace, happiness, and contentment down upon those who dwell upon this sad and war-torn earth.

In these tough times God, and the rest of humanity desperately need a prayer service that really works. And Shaarey Zedek needs you and your feedback to help make it so.

DEFINING OURSELVES MESSAGE FROM

I came across this statement while browsing the Internet a few days ago, while struggling with the contents of this article. I’m not sure who the author is, but it rang very true to me. For most of us, defining ourselves is important. It confirms who we are; what our role is; what our “place” is. It gives us a level of comfort. And it varies, depending on context. We may define ourselves based on gender, age, occupation, race, religion, nationality, etc. The list goes on and on.

So how do we define ourselves as a Congregation? For many, the answer is simple. It’s the same definition we grew up with.

We have always defined ourselves as Conservative. Think about this: defining ourselves as Conservative tells all what we are—not what we do.

As a Conservative congregation, we led the way in creating an egalitarian religious experience for our community. We led the way in welcoming GBLT singles and couples, and providing them with full membership benefits including access to all lifecycle events. We created a dual faith cemetery, recognizing that a growing number in our community are in dual faith relationships and wish to be buried, knowing they will not be separated after death. The fact that we have embraced these changes tells us more about ourselves than a definition of what we are. We have succeeded, where many have feared to tread.

For some of us, these changes may have been uncomfortable.

Why change? Haven’t we survived thousands of years without these kinds of changes? Actually not! We have survived as a religion in spite of persecution, and not having a homeland for most of that time, precisely because we were willing to adapt.

For example, after the Second Temple was destroyed in 70 C.E., our rabbis were forced to reformat the whole of Jewish tradition. The sacrificial ritual, which had been practiced for some thirteen centuries, was no more. So, the rabbis ordained that the words of prayer would become the new form of sacrifice; that every Jewish home would become a kind of miniature Temple; and that every Jew would become a kind of priest.

In my mind, eliminating a ritual that dated back to the time of Moses, and substituting it with the recitation of the morning, afternoon, and evening prayer services, was a very major change. And yet, the Jewish people continued on in a significantly different way and thrived, by maintaining our relevance.

Going forward, Shaarey Zedek will continue to be sensitive to our community’s needs, and adapt where possible to meet them. Rabbi Green’s article talks about a shortened service.

This decision was made as a result of a survey of the 250 people who attended Rabbi Schwarz’s “Davenning Out of

the Box” presentation earlier this Spring. Approximately half of the attendees responded.

A common thread throughout the replies was that our current Shabbat services are too long, and not engaging. Our Clergy and our Ritual Committee agreed that we need to try a shortened, more interactive service. Beginning in July, and throughout the summer, we will test drive a 90-minute interactive service, to begin at 10:00 AM. Come by and try it. Tell us what you think.

Rabbi Green and the Ritual Committee also have agreed, going forward, that service to members for life cycle events such as weddings or B’nai Mitzvah will not be confined to the Shaarey Zedek, or other Kosher venues. We will provide clergy and training if necessary, but will not participate in the meal if it is not vegetarian, dairy, or fish.

Shaarey Zedek also has formed a Rabbi Search Committee chaired by Dr. Wil Fleisher. They are tasked with finding a Rabbi whose primary function will be outreach and engagement both within the congregation, and to our community as a whole.

So, as much as things seem to change, they really haven’t.

Shaarey Zedek will continue to follow a tradition of relevance and engagement. Therefore, when you are next asked, “What kind of synagogue do you belong to?”—I hope your answer will be, “My Shul focuses on engagement, relevance, and the religious needs of our community.”

What is the Voluntary Commitment Model?

1. Synagogue members and prospective members pledge a financial commitment annually of their own choosing, with guidance from the synagogue. Whatever members’ chosen commitment, they are considered to be members of the community without negotiation. There is no “dues relief” or “abatement” policy or process.

2. Synagogue leaders endeavour to align this new financial model with all aspects of their synagogue cultures, values and practises. In all correspondence with their members regarding financial commitments, they make clear the covenantal nature of the system, its alignment with Jewish and synagogue values, and the fact it is voluntary.

Who are the Synagogues currently using the Voluntary Commitment Model?

1. They range from smaller (125 family units) to very large (1750 family units).

2. They are comprised of Conservative, Reform and Independent congregations.

3. They range in age from brand new (open in 2014) to quite old (186 years old).

How does it work?

In the voluntary commitment model, synagogues generally calculate a sustaining dollar amount, which is usually the total budget for the synagogue divided by the number of member households. There are further adjustments to this amount to accommodate various specific circumstances. The synagogue shares this dollar amount with its members as a guide for pledging. Some synagogues also provide a lower level or a minimum amount as a second guide.

In determining their sustaining amounts, some synagogues lower their revenue targets by removing expected income.

For example, we at SZ charge separately for our High Holy Day seats, thus providing an additional revenue source.

We can also look to further lower the sustaining amount by removing expected fundraising and endowment revenues.

The majority of synagogues in the study do continue to charge fees for B’nai Mitzvah, programs, Melton classes and other events that usually demand an entrance fee of some type. They continue to raise funds through High Holy Day appeals, galas and other development programs. When they include these kinds of fees and philanthropy in their budgets, synagogues will calculate their sustaining amounts to replace the amount of money each synagogue was collecting specifically from dues.

Next Issue I will go into greater detail regarding why we are looking at this model, how we go about researching this further and determining whether this model could work for Shaarey Zedek.

In March, I had the pleasure to attend the NAASE (North American Association of Synagogue Executives) Conference in San Diego. This annual conference provides an opportunity for synagogue ED’s to gather to discuss issues at the forefront of Conservative Judaism today.

My main reason for attending was a presentation on “Synagogue Dues Structures” and why congregations must look at alternative membership options. Almost every synagogue in North America currently survives on a Membership Dues model of some type to raise the majority of the required funding necessary to run a shul. Almost all are struggling to maintain their current membership and searching for ways to engage the younger demographic.

I’ve been doing a lot of research into identifying and examining some of the attributes that make for thriving synagogues. One of these attributes that has been the subject of significant study is financial sustainability – what it looks like and what its relationship is to the other elements of synagogue culture and operations. A recent study conducted in the U.S. and Canada, revealed that general trends in society are calling into question the value of joining and belonging to organizations and institutions of all kinds. This has led synagogues to think they need to provide congregants with many programs and services to justify the value of membership. This transactional relationship is not always in alignment with the values and culture of a congregation or community. As many synagogues continue to struggle with their financial sustainability we must realize that our current membership and dues model is built on old assumptions and values. While many synagogues are aware that the current model is failing, for years there has not been much experimentation with alternative models.

Until now!

More than 100 years ago, Rabbi Stephen Wise became the first rabbi to introduce the voluntary commitment model to modern American synagogue life. He argued that the dues system created a distinction between those that could afford to pay and those who could not, and it was precisely this distinction that had no place in a religious community.

He believed that only a free will, or voluntary commitment, model was commensurate with the deepest ideals of Judaism.

This model is not simply a financial model, but a reflection of the values of community and transparency, factors that are critical to its success. In the last couple of years, many synagogues have begun to experiment with this new model.

An extensive study was undertaken in the United States in 2014, looking at 26 synagogues that have eliminated dues and currently use the voluntary commitment model. Of these 26 synagogues 5 were founded using the voluntary commitment model, 12 moved to this model between 2000 and 2012, and 9 shifted to voluntary commitment in the 2013/2014 fiscal year. Even more have undertaken this initiative in the past year.

AV, THE MONTH OF THE REDEMPTION MESSAGE FROM

CHAZZAN ANĺBAL MASS

We were relieved of slavery on the 15th of Nisan and were “intended” to reach our homeland, Israel, in the month of Av. Let’s see why.

There should be 49 days preparing for the encounter with the Lord and the revelation of the Torah.

The 50th day after the Exodus should be the big day when we receive the Torah. Even today, we celebrate this event during Shavuot, every 6th of Sivan.

Following this, Moses should remain 40 days and 40 nights at the top of Mount Sinai, acquiring extraordinary wisdom to share with the children of Israel.

Then, on 17th of Tammuz, he should descend from the heights carrying the Tablets of the Covenant, written by the “finger” of God. On the 18th we should start the journey to the Promised Land, which we should reach at the end of the last day of Tammuz to enter on the first of Av in order to bring redemption and peace to the world.

But something stopped this great redemption and postponed it.

According to the Rabbis, some people miscalculated the date of Moses’ return to the camp after his ascension to the Mount. They became impatient and rioted, confronted, criticized and complained, and harassed Aaron to make for them the Golden Calf. They convinced thousands of Jews to turn to idolatry and immorality, losing at once the holiness attained by everyone just over a month before during the revelation of the Law. After witnessing the people’s moral and spiritual degradation, Moses shattered the Tablets.

As a result, the Israelites had to spend time receiving God’s punishment for the Golden Calf, asking for forgiveness, and awaiting another trip to the top of the Mount by Moses to receive a new set of Tablets on the 10th Tishrei (Yom Kippur) which was many days later, thus losing the unique opportunity that would have brought the great redemption at the exact time specified.

Now the Jews should experience hardship and adversity before being able to reach the border of the Promised Land.

And even at that time, 10 out of the 12 explorers sent to survey the land lost their faith in G-d, convincing the Israelites that it would be impossible to conquer it. The Midrash tells us that this event took place on the 9th of Av in the second year after leaving Egypt, delaying the settling of the land for another 40 years.

Only then would a new generation with different attitudes come to settle the Promised Land. This time however, redemption was incomplete, and we are still suffering the consequences of these tragic events.

Interestingly, according to tradition, the month of Av stills remains as the month of great redemption!

We usually experience the month of Av as a month of sadness, suffering, sorrow, obstacles and mourning. But we were promised that the final redemption will come in Av. Let us all do our part to create peace and redemption today, without further excuses or delays.

They say that all good things must come to an end. The Adult Leisure Group was founded about 40 years ago. It is hard to imagine that so many wonderful years have gone by.

In the beginning, Lona Shaffer was the Executive Director and Doris Lupa was the Catering Chief. They were so helpful in establishing and contributing to the success of the program. Today it is Joel Lafond, Ruth Ashrafi, Rose Mathews and Clare Whiteman.

Many of the volunteers who first participated those 40 years ago are still an integral part of Adult Leisure. Ruth Billinkoff and Rona Levenstein z”l were the first to help establish Adult Leisure. Today, I would like to thank all the dedicated volunteers who help make Adult Leisure a successful and enjoyable Shaarey Zedek program: Ruth Billinkoff, Sandra Caplan, Esther Katz, Dick and Minnie Bell, Toby Sawyer, Gloria Cantor, Eve Vickar, Becky Hochman, Helen Powell, Faye Grant, Sigi Wassermann and others who I may have missed mentioning.

There was an announcement of Joe Mindell’s death in the Winnipeg Free Press on April 20th. I remember Joe and his darling wife, Rose, from long ago. They were regular attendees at our Adult Leisure Group for many years. Joe took pride in that.

He and Rose would often get up to dance whenever we had a musical program.

It was a joy to see them at our programs. May he rest in peace.

MESSAGE FROM

SISTERHOOD LOUISE RABER, PAST PRESIDENT

I am sitting at my computer reflecting on the 53rd Interfaith Luncheon which took place on May 12. As usual, it was a success! Not only was the food great, but the speaker, Jordan Bighorn, was a delightful young man with some very interesting thoughts on his faith and on interfaith. Our Interfaith Luncheon is a huge success year after year because of the Sisterhood members like Simone Cohen and her committee who worked together to make this happen.

I spoke at the luncheon, bringing greetings from Sisterhood.

Besides welcoming people and thanking them for coming, I tried to express my thoughts on the IntraContinental Region Conference held in Winnipeg in April 2015. The theme of the conference was “Finding a Balance”. We are living in a very busy society today and no one has time to do everything. The last person we tend to care for is ourselves. Our Women’s League International Consultant, Shelley Goldin, used humour to talk to us about how to find balance in our lives. She had us reflect on our own upbringing and think of how we came to be where we are today.

Before I go any further, I’d like to make sure I tell you about the two certificates we, at Shaarey Zedek, were presented at the conference. First, we received recognition for our 85 years as an affiliate of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism, and then we were given a “Jewels in the Crown” award. Each Sisterhood must submit an application indicating they have, in a 2 year period, fulfilled certain criteria. Thanks to our programming and Synagogue involvement, we did it!

Each Sisterhood who received a certificate was asked to give a short presentation on one of the programs that they were most proud of. Shaarey Zedek was represented by co-chairs, Harriet Lyons and Carol Levi, along with volunteer Beverly Nord, who continue to facilitate the world renowned Tallit Weaving Class. I must tell you, those of us present kvelled as Harriet and Carol told the attendees about the class and demonstrated some finished products!

Conference had some of its “regular” programs, like “Rap with the Rabbi(s)”. Rabbi Green and Rabbi Lander answered all questions posed to them about many timely topics, including interfaith marriage, same-sex marriage and interfaith burial.

The next morning, both Rabbis led independent sessions on Torah and balance in life. From what I was told, each took a different direction on their answers. (Judaism and controversyusual). The women who attended, from Saskatoon to Winnipeg and from Texas, all found it very interesting.

Local conference chairs were our own Sandy Polanski and Randy Schwartz of Congregation Etz Chayim.

Installation of the new regional board took place. We congratulate Sandy Polanski as the new Regional Torah Fund Vice President. Thelma Sures was installed as Regional Webmaster. Thelma is a computer maven and my personal saviour. (Thanks must also go out to Robert Didych, who bails me out regularly!)

It’s almost time to begin our 2015-2016 Sisterhood year.

By the time you are reading this we will have a new slate of officers (and someone else to write a more enjoyable, thought provoking Shofar column). We are always looking for new members and for our current members to rejoin. We’re also looking for new program ideas, but we can’t organize a program without knowing what your interests are and without people to organize the program. Your input and participation are invaluable.

Congregation Shaarey Zedek has been host to the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning since fall 2013 and we’re excited to offer both Year One and Year Two Courses, and Graduate Course this fall.

This acclaimed global network of learning communities provides an outlet for adults to study together and acquire a deeper knowledge of Judaism with courses designed for all levels of knowledge and practice. The pluralistic educational approach is non–denominational and draws upon scholarships from different Jewish movements, with the curriculum developed by scholars at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

The classroom experience at the shul is interactive and encourages open discussion and multiple understandings, with a comprehensive body of knowledge. And best of all, there are no tests, no homework, no grades and no prerequisites.

Melton is for everyone: • parents and grandparents who want to stay ahead of their children and grandchildren as they learn about Judaism in school, • teachers who want to deepen their Jewish knowledge • board members from community organizations who would like to be more Jewishly literate • and individuals with questions about Judaism who are looking for diverse perspectives presented in a sophisticated, coherent way.

MYSTICISM AND KABBALAH: SECRET KNOWLEDGE IN JUDAISM Sun, Oct 18 to Dec 20, 2015 10:30 AM to Noon (10 Lessons) Facilitator: Rabbi Alan Green

Thanks to Madonna and other contemporary celebrities, Kabbalah today is one of the best known facets of Judaism, yet also one of the least well understood. As a result, despite the public chatter about Kabbalah, for many, this important aspect of the Jewish tradition remains a “closed book.” This new Melton Scholars course enables participants to gain familiarity with the rich history of Jewish mysticism, and understanding of many of the texts that have been so central to that tradition. Presented chronologically, the course provides an opportunity for discussing the progression of Jewish mystical tradition over hundreds of years. Discussions surrounding the texts will relate to enduring Jewish challenges, issues of pressing relevance for Jewish life both past and present. The course will expose participants to some of the ways that the particular lens of the mystical and esoteric has been employed throughout Jewish history to discover the relevant, deeper meanings of Judaism, as students consider the extent to which Jewish mystical teachings speak to the deepest mysteries of human existence, offering rich, meaningful explanations for so many of life’s eternal universal questions.

The Dor Chadash Youth Choir led

by Chazzan Aníbal “Yitzchak” Mass is a fun-filled and uplifting music program for boys and girls ages 11 to 17 who are talented and passionate about Jewish music.

Children will gain self-confidence, train vocally, meet new friends, have fun singing new and popular songs, be part of studio recordings, learn dance choreography, and perform professionally.

Shabbat Hospitality Program Coordinated by Dr. Ruth Ashrafi

Please join us for our successful Shabbat Hospitality Program! On many Shabbats throughout the year, we join other Shaarey Zedek members in their homes for a Friday night Shabbat dinner. Some families host, other people are hosted.

Shaarey Zedek is proud to introduce its new Sunday school program: CHAI: Learning for Jewish Life. Solidly Jewish, educationally sound and beautifully and colourfully illustrated.

The Jewish sages teach us that “the world stands on three things: On Torah, on Avodah, and on G’milut Chasadim”. These pursuits – study, worship, and deeds of loving-kindness – provide the framework within which Jews build their relationships with God, with one another, and with the world. Accordingly, Torah, Avodah, and G’milut Chasadim serve as the core of the CHAI curriculum, providing students with the foundation for a lifetime of Jewish learning.

Our students will learn about these three strands and discover how they relate to their lives. They will learn the stories in the Torah, explore questions about God, and learn about implementing Jewish values.

The students will also learn about the Jewish holidays. Because the curriculum spirals, students study something new about each holiday every year. Each year has its own focus for Torah, Avodah and G’milut Chasadim. Coupled with our Hebrew program, your child will receive a solid, all-round Jewish education.

The program comes with attractively illustrated workbooks and classroom materials. Parents can follow their child’s learning through regular updates.

B’nai Nevi’im: Children of Prophets Chavurah Held on the following Wednesdays at 8 PM: June 3, 17, July 8, August 5 We have now embarked on a journey through the Former Prophets—as depicted in the books of First and Second Samuel, and First and Second Kings–featuring the likes of the prophets Samuel, Nathan, Elijah, Elisha, and others—not to mention King Saul, King David, King Solomon, and their royal descendants, right down to the destruction of the First Temple in 586 BCE. These often obscure books of the Bible offer a fascinating glimpse into the early history of Israel, and the complex and harrowing history through which we were guided by both Prophet and King, dozens of centuries before our own complex era. “Even if they [Israel] are not prophets, they are [nevertheless] the children of prophets” (Babylonian Talmud, Pesachim 66b).

Then we will create a mizrach, by doing the craft of microcalligraphy and painting.
