Message from Rabbi Alan Green For most of us, Jewish holidays are “ghettos in time” – cut off from the everyday flow of our lives. The result is that we tend to forget the how, the why, and even the when of our holidays, and delegate them to surrogate Jews like rabbis and other Jewish professionals.

But our holiday cycle actually is meant to be practiced as an organic whole.

Those who do so deepen their experience of being alive.

They learn not only to live more harmoniously with others, but also, to live more harmoniously with themselves.

The first thing to notice about Jewish holidays is that there are two cycles: one based on the sun, and the other on the moon. These two cycles reinforce one another, teaching similar lessons, but in different ways. Picture if you will, the solar year as an eggshaped oval. Now, in your mind’s eye, plot four points on the egg-shaped oval of the solar year, according to the season. As it happens, these are the four major festivals described in the Torah: 1. Pesach, in spring – the moment of the birth of the Jewish people, and the birth of freedom. Plants and flowers rise up against winter, like the Israelites rising up against Pharaoh. In the life of the individual, this is the moment of rebirth – when an upsurge of creative insight throws of the yoke of habitual, dull routine.

2. Shavuot, at the onset of summer – seven weeks and a day after Pesach – the peak of Nature’s abundance – reminding us of our peak experience at Mt. Sinai when we received the Torah direct from God. In the life of the individual, this is the peak of early maturity – the onset of adulthood.

3. Sukkot, the fall harvest festival – reminding us of our sojourn in the desert, dwelling in fragile huts, absorbing the lessons of Sinai in the presence of God. In the life of the individual, it represents the fullness of life – children grown; work accomplished; and the harvesting of our past labors.

4. And finally, Sh’mini Atzeret – tacked on to the end of Sukkot – a barely visible festival, signaling the onset of the rainy season.

Sh’mini Atzeret echoes the end of our time in the desert, and the beginning of the conquest of the Promised Land. It’s also the time of Simchat Torah, when we read about the death of Moses, but immediately begin again with new life, in the story of creation in Genesis.

In this way, Sh’mini Atzeret completes the cycle of the year. Sh’mini Atzeret itself is so small as to be nearly invisible – like a seed. That seed gets buried underground, ready to burst into new life with the onset of Passover in spring. In the life of the individual, this is the end of life – the moment of inwardness, of summing up, of the passing of a kernel of wisdom to the next generation, so that life may continue to progress and move forward.

This is the egg-shaped oval of the solar year. Now, picture a small circle nestled at one end of that egg-shaped oval, representing one cycle of the moon – specifically, the moon of the seventh month according to the Biblical count – the month of Tishrei. Four significant points can also be plotted on this much smaller circle: 1. Rosh Hashanah – the first of Tishrei, the new moon, and Jewish New Year’s Day. Parallel to Pesach in the solar cycle, Rosh Hashanah is the celebration of new beginnings. The rabbis teach that Rosh Hashanah is the anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve – the birthday of the human race. In the life of the individual, it’s the moment to renew our spiritual lives – the revival of our sense of decency and holiness.

2. Yom Kippur – the tenth of Tishrei, the time of the swelling of the moon, the day of intense relationship with God. As Shavuot celebrates the moment of Revelation, when the Jewish people feel closest to God, so Yom Kippur is the day of our most intense striving for holiness. According to the rabbis, Yom Kippur is the day God forgave the sin of the golden calf, and gave Moses the second copy of the Ten Commandments. So, Yom Kippur is a second Shavuot – a second giving of the Torah at Mt. Sinai.

3. Sukkot – the fifteenth of Tishrei – the full moon – and the fulfillment of the moon, even as Sukkot is the harvest-time fulfillment of the sun. For a brief moment, the solar and lunar cycles overlap. Lunar Sukkot stands within Solar Sukkot. The two great cycles of Jewish time become one – that magic moment when “the light of the moon will be like the light of the sun” (Isaiah 30:26).

4. Finally Sh’mini Atzeret – the twenty-second of Tishrei – when the moon is rapidly waning. This is the moment when the festival of approaching winter – the waning of the sun – merges with the festival of the disappearing moon. And so, the solar and lunar cycles diverge, both moving at different speeds, towards darkness and eventual rebirth.

What can all this teach us about how we should live today? This interweaving of history, Nature, and the individual in the Jewish holiday cycle not only reminds us that all the diverse aspects of creation are connected, but also, that they reverberate. They are alive, and ultimately, they are one. The cycles of sun and moon; the cycles of individual life and generations past, present, and future; the history of our people and its cycles of rebirth and renewal – all of these echo the one great circle of existence – the magnificent tapestry of God’s Creation.

The masters of Jewish tradition have issued an invitation. It’s high time we RSVP, join this great, cosmic circle, and begin to dance!
