Looking Forward

A Message From Frank Hechter, President

Our congregation is at an important and critical juncture in our history. We have been blessed by the foresight, dedication and commitment of the leaders and congregants who boldly planned and completed the construction and move from Dagmar Street to our current location on Wellington Crescent. Our synagogue remains an iconic building that has faithfully served our congregation and the entire Jewish community, and moreover, our synagogue has graced Wellington Crescent for over seventy years. Time, wear and tear, and significant technological advancements have occurred over the intervening 70 years. Our heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) units and our electrical system require replacement to be more efficient and environmentally sound. In addition, our flat roof that had been repaired numerous times is not able in its present state to support new roof mounted HVAC units. Further complicating these planned improvements is the presence of asbestos. Estimates of time, conditions and cost of the

asbestos abatement are currently being undertaken. Resolving these deferred maintenance issues will not be visible to congregants. Any much-needed cosmetic changes will be in addition to the above noted work. We need to attend to the deferred maintenance and update the interior of the synagogue to meet the programmatic, life cycle and religious functions we depend upon as members of Congregation Shaarey Zedek. We are very fortunate that Neil Duboff has undertaken the demanding lead role as Campaign Chair of our L’Dor V’Dor Campaign. Be assured you will have the opportunity to reflect and comment on the plans for the renovations of our beloved synagogue, as we continue our journey forward.

Here’s one from the memory banks, folks. My Bar Mitzvah. Shaarey Zedek. August 1998. A Saturday morning. Parashat Re’eh and Shabbat Rosh Chodesh Elul. I remember marching around the sanctuary with the Torah and asking my mom, “Who are all these people?” I was talking about the faces in the congregation. So many faces I didn’t recognize. They weren’t relatives. They weren’t friends. Who were they? Why were they at my Bar Mitzvah? My mom whispered back, “They’re the regulars. The people who come every week.” You mean there are people who come every week? Even if there’s no Bar or Bat Mitzvah? Yes. Every week. In fact, it’s the people – the regulars – who make Shaarey Zedek what it is. That’s where the character and personality of our services come from. From the

PROUDLY

personalities and from the characters. The hundredplus people who, once a week on Saturday morning, call Shaarey Zedek home. We pray together, we learn together, and we enjoy lunch together. Every week. It’s like the old question – what do you need for a synagogue? You need an Ark with a Torah. You need a Bimah. You need a Ner Tamid – an eternal light. And you need people. That’s it. But let’s not kid ourselves. The people are the key. An empty room with an Ark, Bimah, and Ner won’t do. And it’s not just people sitting in the pews. It’s people who are there to pray. Whether they’re expressing gratitude to God or searching for meaning at a difficult time. Whether they’re celebrating a birthday or quietly saying Kaddish. Bottom line – they’ve come to pray. By now some of you have heard about a change we’ve made at Shaarey Zedek. But I’m putting it in writing, at the recommendation of our Board and lay leadership, so everyone knows… We’re no longer holding Bar or Bat Mitzvah services on Saturday evenings. Just Saturday mornings or other mornings when the Torah is read – like Rosh Chodesh, certain holidays, and Monday and Thursday mornings at our regular minyan. I know it’s a big change and I know some people are less than thrilled. But it’s something we have to do. We have worked so hard over the last five years to improve our Shabbat morning experience. We sliced an hour off the service. We revamped the siddur so more people can understand and follow along. We introduced commentary to give prayers and Torah readings context and meaning. We brought in musical accompaniment to bolster singing and participation. If you’ve been to a Shabbat morning since the Summer of 2015 you’ve noticed. I’ve noticed. When we sing our way through Shacharit, there’s a magic in the air. Everyone singing together in Hebrew. Everyone praying together as a community. It’s wonderful. Even a friend of mine, who’s pretty skeptical and doesn’t really dig our style, admitted there’s a buzz at Shaarey Zedek he couldn’t deny.

Shabbat morning is part of the culture at Shaarey Zedek. It’s our biggest service of the week. Our biggest crowd. We save all our announcements and celebrations for Shabbat morning. Birthdays. Anniversaries. When Rabbi Green said farewell, it happened Shabbat morning. When Rabbi Mass and I had our installation, it happened Shabbat morning. When scholars and guest speakers come to town, it happens Shabbat morning. Shouldn’t it be the same way for all our and Bat Mitzvah celebrations? After all, traditionally, that’s is how we used to announce to the whole community there was a new adult in our midst. Someone ready to be counted in a minyan, called to the Torah, and ready to assume the responsibility of carrying Jewish tradition into yet another generation. I can’t think of a moment more deserving of a public celebration.

That’s why it has to happen in synagogue. In front of family, friends, and the whole congregation. Just like the coronations of kings, the anointing of prophets, and even the revelation at Sinai. Every major announcement we read about in the Bible happened in front of the whole community. All our Bar and Bat Mitzvah students should have the same feeling I had all those years ago, marching through the sanctuary with the weight of the Torah on my shoulder. They should walk the aisles and wonder – Who are all these people? And, in that moment, realize they are part of something bigger.

A Message From Rabbi Aníbal Mass According to the Rabbis, during Chanukah we remember two miracles. From one side, we know that the Greeks wanted to destroy the Jewish people. They had a great and powerful army while the Israelites were few in number and poorly armed. Nevertheless, God produced the first miracle and the Jews were victorious, defeating the mighty Greek army. From the other side, we learn that when the Jews wanted to re-dedicate the Temple, they found only one flask of kosher oil to light the menorah. All the other flasks were previously opened by the Greeks – something that, according to halachah, compromised their kosher status. (This is why kosher meals on airlines come in doublewrapped and sealed packages that are heated by the flight crew but only you can break the seal.) Even though that little flask held enough oil to keep the flame burning for only one day, they decided to light the menorah. God produced the second miracle and the oil burned for eight days. It isn't so difficult to realize that from the two miracles, the most impressive one was the victory against the Greek army. Without that miraculous victory, the Greeks could have crushed us to the point that we may have ceased to exist. The miracle of the oil was quite impressive but not all that necessary. The Jews waited so long to have the Temple that, what difference would it have made to wait one more week to have more oil? In fact, some Rabbis argue that in a situation like that, even the oil coming from the opened flasks could have been used to light the menorah. So, why do we commemorate the miracle of the oil by lighting the chanukkiah but not the miracle of the war? (To be fair, the miracle of the war is mentioned during the religious services of Chanukah but is not part of the rituals celebrated at home). To answer that question, we need to understand that there are two reasons why God sends miracles. One is when there is an absolute necessity for the miracle to happen. But there are other miracles that they are not necessary, but they are sent by God just to let us feel the love God has por a person. Let’s think about it this way – Imagine you see a person changing a baby’s diaper. Unless you know that person,

there is no way to know if that person is the baby’s parent or the nanny. But if after changing the diaper that person gives a big kiss to that baby, then it’s safe to conclude that the person is the parent. The love of a parent is reflected not for giving their children just what they need, but also lots of extra things that there are beyond their basic needs. The Jewish people needed desperately the victory over the Greeks, but not the oil. That was a gift from a loving God. Every night of Chanukah we give presents to our kids, perhaps to reflect on that Divine love that is present in every day of our lives. And as our kids thank us for those presents, we should remember to thank God for all the blessings we receive from our Creator. Chag Sameach,

Let There Be Light

A Message From Dr. Rena Secter Elbaze, Engagement and Education Director

The word “light” conjures up a lot of imagery associated with optimism, positivity, warmth, happiness… in short, all the values our society clings to for motivation and inspiration especially in the heart of winter. So, if you’re craving a little light in your life, we have a lot to inspire you with this winter! Let’s start with the Festival of Lights, Chanukah! This year, we have a new and exciting program coming on Sunday, December 15 with a Chanukah Extravaganza and Market featuring crafts and vendors with lots of great gift ideas for your holiday shopping. There will be a latke tasting booth, cookie and sufganiot decorating as well as special craft workshops for kids with ongoing entertainment on our mainstage. We’ll also embrace winter with some outdoor activities that will add a whole new dimension to our traditional celebration. Another important part of Shaarey Zedek’s Chanukah tradition since the year 2000, has been to spread light and holiday warmth to the less fortunate in our community through the annual West Broadway Ministries Christmas Lunch on December 25. Synagogue staff coordinate ordering and collecting the generous food donations from businesses such as the Viscount Gort Hotel, Salisbury House, Rae and Jerry’s and Gunn’s Bakery while Shaarey Zedek volunteers prepare the space, heat the food and serve a hot meal for Christmas lunch to 150-200 people. It is beautiful to see three generations of family members volunteering to spend the day providing for others. Many of these congregants have been doing this together as a family activity for years... it’s not only about giving gifts and going to parties; it’s about experiencing shared values and uplifting others. Please call the synagogue office if you’d like to be a part of this inspirational program. The synagogue also organizes a food and toiletry drive prior to the lunch that includes new toys for kids, chocolates, candy and personal care products like face cream and body lotion. The synagogue will continue to collect new hats, scarves and mitts after the Koats 4 Kids project is over in November so that guests at the Christmas lunch have something special to take home with them.

A more recent Shaarey Zedek tradition is our partnership with Adas Yeshurun Herzlia (AYH) synagogue for Kosher Chinese Food and a Movie in the evening on December 24. Registration for the delicious dinner and engaging Jewish themed film is required in advance by calling AYH at 204-489-6262. A special children’s movie including popcorn is also offered at this family friendly event. The Shaarey Zedek Adult Education Department continues to offer informative and engaging courses into the new year with the continuation of Rabbi Mass’ class, The Garden of Emuna: A Practical Guide to Life as well as Real Women of Jewish Winnipeg and Chamishi Shaarey Zedek for young adults, both of which provide opportunities to network and connect with friends while discussing relevant topics informed by ancient Jewish wisdom and modern Communications theories. Speaking of young adults and outreach in the community… the Rabbis and I have been out to the Hillel office at the University of Manitoba over the past few months to bring our delicious pizza lunches, food for thought and some spiritual awakening including Shofar blowing for Rosh Hashanah, a Mezuzah dedication sponsored by the Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood and a Chanukah program. We have also been building a connection with the university’s Spiritual Care Department and look forward to some collaborative programming in the spring. More exciting events and activities will take us into the month of February with a Tu B’Shevat Concert featuring the Winnipeg Jewish Chorus on February 9 and a Tu B’Shevat Family Shabbat Dinner on February 7. Once again, this year we will be a partner in the Shabbat Across Winnipeg dinner on February 28 that will take place at the Etz Chayim synagogue. For registration and more details please contact our partner at 204-589-6305. If you would like to know more, or would like to get involved, please feel free to call me at 204-975-3489 or send me an email to rena@szwinnipeg.ca. Warm Regards!

What is Sisterhood?

A Message From Louise Raber, Sisterhood, Co-President People often approach me and ask, “What is Sisterhood? Give me a good reason to join”. Recently, I found a quote written by Glennon Doyle Melton, author, activist, philanthropist and non-profit executive, which is “Sisterhood is the phenomenon that occurs when women quit seeing each other as mirrors or reflections of themselves, and start seeing each other as one-of-a-kind works of art. Sisterhood happens when women view each other as deep wells of support and inspiration-as teammates instead of competitors. Sisterhood happens between women who are secure enough to stop being afraid of each other; who do not feel that another woman’s different life choices are a judgement of her own choices. Sisterhood happens when we become curious instead of defensive about our differences. Sisterhood does not require the same beliefs or thoughts or political parties or churches. Peace is not about becoming the same; it’s about becoming okay with being different. There is so much untapped power in sisterhood.” I hope you read the above quote and re-read it to get its true meaning. When I read the line, “Peace is not about becoming the same; it’s about becoming okay with being different,” I realized this statement says so much about our upcoming 58th Annual Interfaith Luncheon.

Marisa Hochman and I are working on a program with a focus on gender issues in women’s sports. So read all you can about how this topic may change women’s sports as we’ve known it over the past decades. It may be abolished in our lifetime. More information will become available as soon as it is finalized (but the luncheon should take place in either late April or early May). What do I know? November 6 Sisterhood accompanied Rabbi Aníbal and Rena Elbaze to Hillel at the University of Manitoba and presented them with a new mezuzah and kosher parchment. Pamela Brooker and Svetlana Frankel developed a scrapbooking program that took place on Sunday, December 8th. Svetlana is very talented and we were pleased to have her share her expertise with us. During Chanukah, Rochelle Pincovich and the Mitzvah Group will once again sponsor a program at the Simkin Centre, this time on the first day of the holiday -- Monday, December 23 at 2 pm. Shayla Fink will provide the entertainment. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the afternoon. It is truly a mitzvah to visit our elders. CONTRIBUTIONS HAVE BEEN MADE

Dear Friends and Congregants, Working at Shaarey Zedek these past (almost) 21 years has gifted me with so many friendships and a warm sense of community for which I am deeply grateful. It’s given me the opportunity to learn and grow and the desire to be a better person. Thank you for your kind and caring cards and wishes on my retirement. I take my leave but I’ll be looking over my shoulder at you who are the Shaarey Zedek. Thank you for your wonderful gifts. I shall cherish them always. Clare Whiteman
