Reflections of a Thankful Family

A Message From Frank Hechter, President

Let me apologize in advance for the unabashedly personal perspective of this article. My beloved mother, Lenore Hechter, passed peacefully in her sleep on July 8th at her residence in the Simkin Centre. Even though her passing was anticipated, the reality of her death was and continues to be emotionally, psychologically and physically challenging. Surviving family members are numb, vulnerable and unable to think clearly. We are critically dependent upon the support, caring, humanity and compassion of our community. Fortunately, our Winnipeg Jewish community has the resources, human and physical, and expertise to meet these circumstances, specifically the Simkin Centre, the Chesed Shel Emes and our Congregation Shaarey Zedek. I am sure none of the residents, including our mother, anticipated spending their golden years in a personal care facility like the Simkin Centre. I would like to express our immense gratitude to my mother’s fellow residents, the incredible healthcare, programming, and administrative staff of the Simkin Centre for their expertise, genuine care, encouragement and compassion under incredibly difficult circumstances. From the moment of her passing, the staff of the Simkin Centre were gentle, supportive, thoughtful and well organized. The calmness, sensitivity and immediate action provided by the Chesed Shel Emes was reassuring, respectful and professional. Arrangements for mother’s funeral at our synagogue were handled with dignity, grace and taste. Every aspect of her funeral was a tribute and celebration of her life. We at Congregation Shaarey Zedek are blessed with an outstanding team of clergy, and dedicated, compassionate administrative, catering and cemetery personnel. We have been greeted warmly and graciously by members of our daily minyan.

Does everything always go as planned or anticipated? No, but be assured we are incredibly fortunate that we have these critically important institutions within our Jewish community. Thank you all for your support, caring and thoughtfulness during this difficult time. From my family to yours, may the New Year be blessed with health, happiness and laughter surrounded by family and friends. Shanah Tovah,

Shanah Tovah!

You've Lost That Magic Feeling This happened a few years ago. I was still working on the radio. Heather came one evening to pick me up after a late afternoon shift. In all the years I’d worked at TSN 1290 she had never seen the studio before. So, I invited her in to take a peek. She burst through the studio door excitedly, took one look, and stormed back out through the door. “What’s the matter?!” I called out. “I can’t handle it!” she shouted back, never breaking stride. “It’s just way too stressful!” Huh? I stood there in silence in the empty studio. Confused. What was so stressful?! Everyone was gone for the night. There was nothing going on! My setup in those days was an office chair stationed at the control board – a giant slab of nobs, buttons, and sliding faders. Look up from the chair and you’d see two huge mounted screens with colourful displays, bright flashing lights, and ticking digital clocks. Look left and you’d see two computers, one with a program to play sound clips, the other with my scripts. Look right and there’s another computer recording all our shows live. Heather’s point was it was just so busy. So chaotic. All the buttons. All the lights. The giant clock ticking off second after second after second. A million things going at the same time. And I suppose she was right. To someone looking at my setup for the first time, it was pretty overwhelming. I’d just sat in that chair so many times by that point, I was numb to it. I find it fascinating how anything in life can become routine. Even a fast-paced, high-pressure job. If you do it enough times, it almost becomes boring. I think about my sister-in-law delivering babies as a doctor. Or my friend the firefighter. Or my other friend the traveling musician. Their jobs are so cool, so special, and yet, for them, they’re just another day at the office. One Shabbat morning this past summer we had a Torah reading in Parashat Masei that contains two rare tropes. Two cantillation marks that don’t appear anywhere else in the Torah. Only in this one spot. (The tropes are called Karnei Farah and Yerach Ben Yomo in case you’re curious.)

The tropes appear on back-to-back words which translate to: “two thousand cubits.” In fact, in this particular verse, the expression “two thousand cubits” appears four times. The rare tropes mark the first appearance. The second appearance is marked by different tropes that have a very high tune. The third is marked by tropes that have a low, descending tune. The fourth is marked by two very generic, run-of-the-mill tropes. So, what’s the deal? The pattern of the tropes on these four expressions is meant to parallel the emotional level we experience when it comes to performing mitzvot. The first time we perform a mitzvah it’s incredibly exciting. It’s rare. It’s special. We’ve never done it before! The next time, it’s still exciting. We still get a “high”. It’s not like the very first time, but the novelty hasn’t quite worn off. But then on the third time our excitement level starts to drop. And by the fourth, that special flare is gone. The mitzvah has become routine. Almost boring. This is the same for everything in life, really. Our jobs. Our relationships. Do something enough and it loses its magic. No matter what it is. The trick for us is finding a way not to lose the magic. Not to take our activities and our mitzvot for granted. Not to get mired in the monotony of routine. As I write this, I’m about to head out on vacation. A break from my routine. I know when I come back, I will be rested, refreshed, and excited to get back to work. That’s how I get the magic feeling back. That’s what works and has always worked for me. When I get too stuck in routine, I need a break. This is the season of (Jewish) New Year Resolutions. I would encourage you to identify the things in your life where the spark has dimmed, even if just a bit, and find a way – any way – to reignite it. Heather, Hugo, and I wish all of you a sweet, healthy, and happy New Year of breaking out of routine and cherishing the magical moments in life. Shanah Tovah!

A Message From Rabbi Matthew Leibl

Weeds, Bushes, and Branches Photo credit: Robyn Shapiro Photography

A Message From Rabbi Aníbal Mass A rabbi was walking down the street on Erev Rosh Hashanah when he came upon a group of about a dozen boys, all of them between 10 and 12 years of age. The group had surrounded a dog. Concerned that the boys were hurting the dog, he went over and asked, “What are you doing with that dog?” One of the boys replied, “This dog is just an old neighborhood stray. We all want him, but only one of us can take him home. So, we’ve decided whichever one of us can tell the biggest lie will get to keep the dog.” Of course, the rabbi was taken aback. “You boys shouldn’t be having a contest telling lies right before Rosh Hashanah!” he exclaimed. He then launched into a ten-minute sermon against lying, beginning with “Don’t you boys know it’s a sin to lie?” and ending with, “Why, when I was your age, I never told a lie.” There was dead silence for about a minute. Just as the rabbi was beginning to think he’d gotten through to them, the smallest boy gave a deep sigh and said, “All right, give him the dog.” I want to talk to you today about weeds, bushes and branches. The morning before I started to write this message, I was in my house enjoying a morning coffee and looking out the window at our backyard. I saw all the bushes, trees and plants around our swimming pool. I remembered earlier in the season the branches were so thick I couldn’t access the filter and the pump to clean them. The situation became so that if I left things unattended, very soon I likely wouldn’t be able to see the filter anymore. Then it hit me like lightning, that this is the way it is with things we do during the year. Unfortunately, some of our actions are like weeds and dangerous branches. If we don’t watch them, if we don’t pay attention, if we don't tend to them, they will grow quickly and eventually take over. They become who we are, then something that was supposed to look beautiful and inspiring becomes ugly and depressing. These weeds take away from the beauty of who we truly are, the beauty of our spiritual existence, the beauty of our connection to God.

12

Our prayers during Rosh Hashanah are almost entirely about God as a King, as a Ruler. For example, we say “Zochreinu L’chayim Melech Chafetz Bachayim”, “Remember us for life, Ruler who delights in life”. Technically, on Rosh Hashanah we don’t focus on our transgressions or confess our sins (that will come on Yom Kippur), but we focus on God as the Ruler of the Universe. The reason for that, I believe, could be also found in my backyard. You see, there is nothing wrong with the bushes and trees, except they weren’t taken care of in the right way or at the right time. The bushes don’t have to take over the backyard and there is no reason for the branches to block the pool filter. All I have to do is to pay attention to what it is going on and carefully, constantly keep reshaping the landscape until it becomes beautiful again. But the longer I neglect it, the more difficult it will be to bring it back to its former shape. I believe the reason why we focus on God as the Ruler of the Universe is to remember God’s Master Plan for this world and for our lives. Then we will realize we have to take care of the weeds and trim the branches that are blocking the beauty of our full potential. On Rosh Hashanah we also remember that God is not just the Ruler but also the Source of Life. Rosh Hashanah is about our relationship with God. God is not in the punishment and condemnation business. Instead, God’s Torah and Mitzvot are there to add life and beauty to our existence. Recognizing God as the Source of Life teaches us that happiness doesn’t come from physicality, parties, possessions or from money. Happiness comes from living a life of meaning and purpose. During Rosh Hashanah this year, remember what you are here for. Realize that you are not so far away from there. Simply take some time to get rid of some weeds and trim some useless branches. Then you can reveal the beautiful and inspiring truth that is waiting to be shared. Ashira, Ronen and I wish you all Shanah Tovah from our family to yours.

A Message From Dr. Rena Secter Elbaze, Education and Engagement Director As children start heading back to school and the days are getting shorter, we realize that the Hebrew month of Tishrei is almost upon us and we begin to take stock of what we have accomplished in our lives since last Rosh Hashanah. Our tradition teaches us to set aside time to think about our personal goals, and to consider what values and guiding principles are important to us as we attempt to achieve those goals. To some of you, this annual evaluation may sound like managing a business plan! Once an organization establishes its goals, top management will consider which values and guiding principles they will follow in the pursuit of these goals. A value could be “inclusivity”; a guiding principle could be “create and demonstrate a culture of welcoming” Then, an organization has to communicate this “culture” to its members. Finally, the organization needs a strategy with specific parameters of time and resources to achieve their goals with metrics to evaluate if they are being successful. Seen from the eyes of a modern-day businessperson, Judaism has all of these components! As a people, we have a GOAL of improving the condition of humanity and our environment. We have VALUES like “caring for the vulnerable” and GUIDING PRINCIPLES that would encourage us to always “prefer a path of peace” whenever possible. Concerning our COMMUNICATION STRATEGY, we spend a good deal of time trying to get the good word out. An example is the Shema prayer, which we recite three times a day; the commandment in the Shema to spread the word through a variety of medium looks a lot like a well thought out marketing mix! “…You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your might. And these words which I command you today shall be upon your heart. You shall teach them thoroughly to your children, and you shall speak of them when you sit in your house and when you walk on the road, when you lie down and when you rise…. And you shall write them upon the doorposts of your house and upon your gates…”

14

So, what does Judaism’s “Business Plan” have to do with me, you might ask. Well, if you care about the “pursuit of justice” and if “honouring women” and “expressing gratitude” have meaning to you and you think you can do better, our Adult Education programs may have something for you! Judaism has a variety of personal development tools to put at your fingertips and our Adult Education Department is offering a few programs to help you access these tools. Before Rosh Hashanah, why not take the time to think about your goals for the coming year and what strategies you can put into place to achieve them. Having a strategy and the necessary resources in place will set you on the path to success. If you’d like to find a strategy to approach challenges in your life with positivity, sign up for Rabbi Mass’ class, The Garden of Emuna: A Practical Guide to Life. If you would like to network and connect with friends while discussing relevant topics informed by ancient Jewish wisdom and modern Communications theories, we offer a variety of specialty groups such as Real Women of Jewish Winnipeg or Chamishi Shaarey Zedek for young adults. On a more concrete level, if you would like to get more out of the Shabbat morning service or be able to read the Parsha or Torah portion, in the original Hebrew, we will be offering a FREE Hebrew Reading Crash Course right after the High Holy Days. Students with no prior knowledge of Hebrew could read full sentences after only five weeks! For those who love the combination of soul food and real food, consider registering for our series, Shabbat: A Taste of the World to Come. If you would like to know more, or would like to help with a program, feel free to call me at 204-975-3489 or send me an email to rena@szwinnipeg.ca. Warm Regards!

Sisterhood Message

Louise Raber, Sisterhood, Co-President Before we begin another year, I’d like to tell you about our fabulous Wind-Up on June 20, 2019. It was a Pound Auction! Everyone buys something that weighs a pound, wraps it up in a disguise and it is auctioned off! It was an extremely fun-filled evening chaired by the dynamic duo of Denise Waldman and Sandy Polanski. Some of the wrapped items were very creative and the proceeds will go towards a future Sisterhood-supported project. We are thrilled to support the Shabbat Morning Family Service. Earlier in 2019, we had purchased several new puppets and are thrilled to see how much the children, their parents and grandparents enjoy them. Especially Gamal the grumpy camel! Also, at Leslie Emery’s request Sisterhood happily purchased special siddurim for the Family Service, the Siddur Ma Tov – A Family Shabbat Prayer Book. It gives us great pleasure to watch the future leaders of Shaarey Zedek learn and enjoy davening in a very unique and enjoyable way! The Synagogue approached us with the concern that some of the crowns and Torah Rimonim (decorative Torah scroll handles) that adorn the Sifrei Torah are in need of re-silvering and repair. Sisterhood was able to cover the cost to restore one set of Rimonim. The beauty of these historic and sacred items is very dear to us all.

We have some terrific programs planned and some to be planned for 2019 - 2020. Laurie Shapiro and Thelma Sures will be sending out membership renewal notices soon, but there is no need to wait for the reminder. Our annual dues remain at $36. We want to keep it affordable for all. However, if you can, please consider giving a bit more to help Sisterhood continue fulfilling its support requests and producing its wonderful programs. Every little bit extra helps. Thank you! Gloria Cantor received a beautifully written thank you note from Willow Place for the items we donated for their new kitchen facility. These items were the centre pieces at the Interfaith Luncheon. They are also grateful for the clothing, toiletries, baby goods etc. donations we collect for them at the Synagogue! Keep it coming! Willow Place provides shelter for women and children escaping negative living situations. Gloria is their representative from Sisterhood. Rochelle Pincovich has not finalized any plans yet but Sisterhood’s Mitzvah Group will once again visit the Simkin Centre on Chanukah, bringing entertainment and refreshments. We’ll serve the refreshments too. Sisterhood’s Judaica Gift Shop re-opens on Sundays and Thursdays from 10:00am to 1:00pm beginning September 1. Carole Jeffries will happily arrange a private appointment if you’re unable to shop during those hours. Just leave her a message at 204-975-3487. Also leave her a message if you’d like to work in the Gift Shop. Volunteers are always needed, and no sales experience is required.

A donation bin is located in the lower level of the synagogue coordinated by Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood. Current items in need include: Microfiber Cleaning Cloths, Journels, Towels, Facecloths, Laundry Pods, Paper towels, Toilet paper (1-ply), Tissue, Pens, Small Journal books, Craft supplies such as glue sticks, watercolor paper, clear drying liquid glue, glue sticks, paint and paint brushes, Cleaning cloths, Canned Goods, Dry Goods, Peanut Butter, Jams etc., Metal Cutlery (Spoons and Forks), Baby Bottles, Pull-Ups/Diapers (Sizes 4, 5, 6), Diaper Cream, Baby Toys, Craft Kits (For Women, Children and Group Activities), Colouring Books, Teen gifts (i.e. watches, videos, jewelry, sport t-shirts, wallets), Bus Tickets (Adult and Youth), Gift Cards (Walmart, Superstore, Safeway, Tim Horton’s or any similar establishment to be used to purchase required items or for outings).

The Sisterhood Shabbat will take place in early 2020. If you, your mother, your daughter (pre or post bat mitzvah), or your Baba would like to participate, and you want to secure your favourite part of the service, call now! The Torah Fund Campaign will begin before Pesach, but Sandy Polanski, our Torah Fund Chair, will take your donation at any time. This year's Torah Fund theme, Chesed, means “kindness” in Hebrew. The word can also be translated as “lovingkindness,” to convey the deep love that animates Jewish acts of kindness, done without thought of reward. th The 58 Annual Interfaith Luncheon is in the planning stages. Marisa Hochman and Louise Raber are co-chairing. It will take place after Pesach 2020, and will be exciting and engaging! WLCJ will hold its triennial convention July 12-15 in Schaumberg, Illinois (outside Chicago). As at past conventions, the Jewels in the Crown Awards will be presented. Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood has won several of these awards and is looking forward to entering again. Stay tuned for information on events and programs that will help us to be recognized internationally! From Sandy Polanski and Louise Raber, Sisterhood Co-Presidents, and the Sisterhood Board, we wish everyone a Shanah Tovah Umetukah, in good health and with much happiness. NOTE: To contact Sisterhood, please email sisterhood@ szwinnipeg.ca or phone 204-452-3711 and leave a message for us at the Synagogue office.

My Jewish Reawakening

Congregant and Guest Writer Hannon Bell

My earliest memories of being Jewish are those of my Zaida Solomon Rabinovitch presiding over the Passover seder. The highlight for me was reciting the Four Questions. Zaida and my family, along with my Aunt Polly (Rabinovitch) Essers, went to the Orthodox synagogue Chevra Mishnayes for the High Holy Days. So, I became immersed in Jewish traditions as a child. My faith in God and Jewish traditions were a mainstay of my being. Fast forward to 1998 when my dear sister, Nancy, was diagnosed with cancer. I remember feeling helpless and calling out to God every night, praying for a miracle. Her cancer was arrested but a year later it had metastasized. Again, I prayed and talked to God in the most private of conversations. But my prayers were unanswered. Four and a half years later in 2003, Nancy succumbed to the disease at the age of fifty-one.

experience, my faith returned! It is still a mystery to me how it happened. What a wonderful feeling it is to believe once again and partake in all the traditions and community involvement that my “awakening” has offered me. How has this affected me? I am now a member of the Shaarey Zedek. I am a member of the Jewish Community Choir and belong to the Rady JCC. I attend Shabbat services regularly and partake in Rabbi Mass’ Torah L’Chayim study group. I studied with Rabbi Leibl for a year to prepare for my 2nd Bar Mitzvah this past November. That was an eye-opening experience! I also attend Rabbi Mass’ conversion classes because I want to learn more. Everything happens for a reason. I believe I had to go through what I did to rediscover a deeper spirituality. If I hadn’t, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. What’s most satisfying is that I now proudly embrace my Jewish faith and am involved in Jewish life once again, all of which has brought great joy and meaning into my life. BESHERT!

My parents, Rose and Leon Bell lived to their mideighties, but losing Nancy was something I could not understand. The result was I lost my Jewish faith. In fact, I didn’t believe in any type of religion, organized or not. I felt God had betrayed me. Abandoned me. My late wife, Lorraine, would encourage me to get back to my belief in God and my “Jewishness”, but from 2003-2017 I resisted. In 2017 a friend had a birthday aliyah at the Shaarey Zedek and invited me to share the mitzvah. It was then the inexplicable happened. Somehow, through that

Bringing Light to Darkness The One More Candle Project

Advertorial

Jacqueline Seipp, Founder and Executive Director, OneMoreCandle.org Three years ago, I had an idea. Don't get me wrong, I've had many ideas since then, but this one was different. Wouldn't it be wonderful if each of the 1.5 million children who perished in the Shoah could be "adopted" and remembered by individuals, families and synagogues throughout the world? Having received overwhelming encouragement and support from Rabbi Green, Bill Weissmann, Ben Berkal, family and friends, the One More Candle project was launched, here, at Shaarey Zedek where my grandfather Louis Seipp z"l was a founding member. One More Candle is now a registered charity committed to remembering every one of the 1.5 million children murdered in the Shoah. We are in partnership with B’nai Brith Canada. We are extremely appreciative of Shaarey Zedek which is the first synagogue to accept the adoption of the memories of 399 children (365 + 29, can't forget the leap month of Adar II) who were murdered in the Shoah. Each one of their names is called daily at minyan services throughout the year. We continue to receive support by our congregation through their adopting the memory of a child victim of the Shoah as though being one of their own, for indeed, they are ours.

Shaarey Zedek has broken new ground in an interactive and intergenerational memory project. Since the conception of One More Candle in 2016, there are synagogues across Canada, in Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, and Saskatchewan as well as the United States that support the project. People from around the world have also chosen to adopt the memory of a One More Candle child. Bar and bat mitzvah children have also made the commitment of adopting a memory. It is the perfect time to commit to honouring the memory of an “adopted” child and to remember them yearly. One More Candle gives you the opportunity to adopt a memory of a murdered child and remember that they had lived once, giving light to the darkness by saying his or her name out loud, saying Kaddish, doing an act of kindness, or simply by lighting just One More Candle. Please join us in this very important mitzvah, the act of remembering, L’dor V’dor. To adopt a memory, visit www.onemorecandle.org There is no charge. You are always welcome to call us directly at 204-228-8182.

O NE M OR E CA ND LE Brings Light to Darkness Adopt the memory of a child murdered in the Shoah. Adopt a memory so that a murdered child has someone to remember that they lived, giving light to the darkness by saying his or her name out loud, saying kaddish, and by simply lighting just One More Candle every year. We are a registered charity. There is no charge to adopt a memory. Donations may be made to One More Candle at 295 Elm Street Winnipeg, Manitoba R3M 3N6 , or donate to the Congregation Shaarey Zedek Yahrzeit Fund (204-452-3711).
