RUTH:THE ULTIMATE INSIDER MESSAGE FROM RABBI ALAN GREEN This theme of redemption is celebrated in the Haftarah for the Shabbat of Sukkot, which describes the war of God and Magog—the ultimate face-off between good and evil in which evil is forever vanquished. The experience of this redemption is deepened through study of the book of Ecclesiastes, which explicates the nature of material life “under the sun.” Pesach is all about the liberation of the Israelite slaves from Egypt—something we symbolically recreate around the Seder table every year. This theme of redemption is celebrated by the words of Isaiah in the Haftarah for the eighth day of Pesach: “For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of God, as the waters cover the sea.” The experience of this redemption is deepened through our study of Song of Songs—the love story of God, Israel, and all mankind. Shavuot is all about the revelation of Torah at Mt. Sinai— something we symbolically recreate by studying Jewish texts on Erev Shavuot. This theme of redemption is celebrated by the prophet Ezekiel’s initiatory revelation: “In the thirtieth year, on the fifth day of the fourth month, when I was in the community of exiles by the Chebar Canal, the heavens opened, and I saw visions of God.” The experience of this redemption is deepened through our study of the book of Ruth—who arrives from outside, but remains for all time at very core of Jewish existence. In this, there lies a tale. Ruth is a Moabite. But Deuteronomy 23: 4-5 tells us, “No Ammonite or Moabite shall be admitted into the congregation of the Lord—none of their descendants, even in the tenth generation…because they did not meet you with food and water after you left Egypt, and because they hired Bil’am, son of B’or…to curse you.” Moab continued to be a great enemy of Israel for centuries. But Ruth, a Moabite, has married into the Hebrew family of Elimelech and Naomi, whom she met when they left Bethlehem and relocated to Moab because of famine. Years later, Elimelech and his two sons die, leaving Naomi and her two daughters-in-law widows. Naomi eventually decides to return to Bethlehem. Ruth the Moabite famously decides to accompany her mother-in-law, declaring her intention with these classic words (Ruth 1:16-17): “Entreat me not to leave or return from following you. For wherever you go, I will go; and wherever you lodge, I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God, my

God. Where you die, I will die, and there will I be buried. May God do so to me and more also, if anything but death parts me from you.” Arriving in Bethlehem, Ruth goes to glean in the fields, where she meets Boaz. At the instigation of Naomi, she forces Boaz to declare his intentions towards her, by sneaking into the threshing floor at night and lying at his feet (Ruth 3:8). Boaz marries Ruth and they have a son. Through this son, Ruth the Moabite becomes great-grandmother to King David— the ideal king of Israel and ancestor of the Messiah—the ultimate redeemer of all mankind. Boaz also has unusual ancestry. Several generations earlier, Judah has refused to find a third husband for his childless daughter-in-law, Tamar. Two previous husbands—both sons of Judah—have died, and Judah is reluctant to wed a third son to Tamar. Tamar tires of waiting for Judah to act as he should, and decides to take vengeance. She disguises herself as a prostitute, sleeps with Judah, and keeps his belt and seal as security against future payment. A few months later, Tamar is visibly pregnant—a capital crime for an unmarried woman in those days. But holding Judah’s belt and seal, Tamar says: “I am pregnant by the man to whom these belong.” Tamar gives birth to twins, one of whom—Peretz—becomes the ancestor of Boaz. What’s the lesson here? Extending a welcoming hand to strangers—those outside the usual norms of society, and even outside the law—is key to the redemption of humanity. Through no fault of their own, Ruth and Boaz have come into the world under a cloud, because of their shady ancestry. Nevertheless, against all expectations, these two give birth to great light—to King David; to the whole line of rulers of the Kingdom of Judah; and ultimately to the Messiah himself. The Rizhiner Rebbe once told a story about a case in which the verdict, although strictly by the book, was clearly unjust. The Messiah, who at the end of days will right all wrongs, says by way of response: “The father-in-law is right. The rabbi is right. And the Law is right. But I—what have I to do with them? I have come for those who are not right!” Wishing you all a Chag Shavuot Sameach!

There is a strong redemptive element to each of the major festivals of the Jewish year. Sukkot is all about God’s guidance and protection of the Israelite slaves fleeing Egypt—something we symbolically recreate by building and eating in the sukkah.

LORNE WEISS PRESIDENT Dear Friends, When we drive up to 561 Wellington Crescent we see an iconic building that has been the unchanging face of Congregation Shaarey Zedek for almost 70 years. But, its when you enter the building to attend a service or life cycle event that you realize there have been many changes in the past 60 plus years. I’ve re-capped many of them in previous columns so I won’t take you down that road again. Today, instead of the past, I’d like to share some plans for the near future that will continue to keep Shaarey Zedek relevant and engaging to our community. As many of you are already aware, Rabbi Alan Green has announced his retirement at the end of his current contract in 2018. During our search process for a replacement Rabbi we discovered two things. Firstly, the unique qualities that made Rabbi Green the successful spiritual leader of a diverse congregation such as ours are not readily available. Secondly, and of greater significance, we discovered that the attributes of spiritual leadership and engagement that we had identified during our search, were right here under our own roof. Both Cantor Aníbal Mass and Chazzan Sheni Matthew Leibl have demonstrated the passion, the

commitment as well as the educational, communication, engagement skills and understanding of the needs of our community to make them the choice of our Senior Rabbi, our Ritual Committee and our board of directors as our Rabbinic Team to follow Rabbi Green after his retirement. This summer, both Matthew Leibl and Cantor Mass will receive their Smicha and be ordained as Rabbis. We will be honouring their achievement and installing them as Rabbis at Shaarey Zedek in early November. Plans will be starting to take shape shortly for a very special weekend at the end of April 2018 in recognition of Rabbi Alan Green’s 18 years of service to Shaarey Zedek and his pivotal role in the Jewish and interfaith community in Winnipeg. In the past I’ve talked about the increase in numbers of families having life cycle events, in particular B’nai Mitzvah, at Shaarey Zedek. Every time we host one, we get numerous inquiries from others who have attended as guests who want the same experience for their families.We are experiencing a similar experience with weddings. Families and guests love our service, love our kosher food and find that our prices are more than competitive to outside venues. What they don’t love is the decor of our auditorium / social hall. Although it has served us well over the decades, its time for a refreshment. Our building committee is inviting a number of interior designers to submit proposals for an upgrade to this facility. We hope to have it completed in time for our celebration in honour of Rabbi Green. As much as change happens, somethings never change. Along with vision and commitment, resources, human and financial are important components. If you have had some experience in event planning or are able to provide financial support (for as little as $500.00) for these and other exciting events we are planning, I’d love to hear from you. DR RENA SECTER ELBAZE EDUCATION AND ENGAGEMENT DIRECTOR
The last time I reached out to you, we were gearing up for Passover, cleaning our homes and decluttering our spirits as we prepared to bring in Chag Ha Aviv the “Holiday of Spring”. As I reach out to you now, we are right in the middle of the Omer. It is the solemn period between Passover and Shavuot, that commemorates the period of trepidation of our wandering in the desert in search of our identity as a free nation. This time will have been an exhilarating mental preparation taking us through the heart wrenching commemoration of the Shoah, the joyful celebration of the birth of the State of Israel, the community-wide celebration of Lag B’Omer and the reunification of Jerusalem. Our own Scholar-In-Residence Weekend, celebrated April 28-30 further offered us an opportunity to define our own identity as a community. Through a series of events including Shabbat and a Sunday Leadership Development Brunch, we gathered as a community to rethink our values and our goals. In the days and weeks to come we will be implementing many of the ideas that were discussed and tested over the course of the weekend. Watch for some of these initiatives: We are currently looking to grow our group of Shabbat greeters based on the positive feedback we received about the welcoming experience that was created on Shabbat. We would like to have greeters from a variety of demographic groups so we are better prepared to connect with all those who walk through our doors. Speaking of demography…we will be meeting with a group of young people who participated in the weekend and who would like to build a small Chavura within our larger synagogue community. If you or any of your relations are in your 20’s and 30’s, please be in touch and we will include you in any future planning. The SIR weekend was also an opportunity to learn and grow with other lay leaders and professionals from the Jewish community who share our values and concerns about creating a welcoming environment. Shaarey Zedek is part of a series of ongoing community wide initiatives to make our community more welcoming and accessible. One of these community wide initiatives was the celebration of Lag B’Omer and Yom Yerushalayim which took place on the Sunday of the May long weekend at Six Pines Farm. This was the fifth year that Shaarey Zedek participated in this event outside the walls of our community organizations to bring community members of all walks of life together and create awareness about what we have to offer. Finally, we will celebrate the end of the Omer, with our community partners at a Pre-Tikun Leil Shavuot hosted this year by Etz Chayim synagogue. Rabbi Green, Cantor Mass, Matthew Leibl and I will be hosting a variety of learning and discussion sessions at this program. Watch for more details about this program and be sure to reserve your spot.

The holiday of Shavuot celebrates the Giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai following the Exodus from Egypt. 2 The Hebrew word Shoah comes is used to refer to the Holocaust. 3 Lag B’Omer, is a Jewish holiday celebrated on the 33rd day of the Counting of the Omer, which occurs on the 18th day of the Hebrew month of Iyar. This day marks the anniversary of the death of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, a Mishnaic sage and leading disciple of Rabbi Akiva in the 2nd century, and the day on which he revealed the deepest secrets of kabbalah in the form of the Zohar (Book of Splendor), a landmark text of Jewish mysticism. This association has spawned several well-known customs and practices on Lag B’Omer, including the lighting of bonfires, pilgrimages to the tomb of Bar Yochai in the northern Israeli town of Meron, and various customs at the tomb itself. 4 A Chavurah is a friendship circle that gathers based on common interests and shared values. 5 Yom Yerushalayim commemorates the reunification of Jerusalem after the Six Day War in 1967. This year is the 50th anniversary. 6 A Tikun is a study session, which takes place on the Leil or evening of a holiday. Traditionally on Shavuot, this goes on well into the night. 1
